    • Ex-Ekiti governor: Rivers crisis a ‘sad narrative’

Former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has advised Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara to stop confronting Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

He said the governor should instead pursue an honest reconciliation to resolve the lingering political crisis in the state.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Lagos, Fayose described the feud between Fubara and Wike as a sad development.

The former governor insisted that Fubara should exercise restraint and manage the situation, instead of engaging in open confrontation with the minister.

He advised Fubara to stop contesting issues of political leadership with Wike, noting that the realities of power were well known to all the parties involved.

“There’s a difference between the office and 001. What brought about the 001? Who gave you the platform to call yourself the 001? It is a sad narrative for Governor Fubara to be struggling,” Fayose said. “Rather, he should manage the situation. Even if Wike is saying he is the leader, it is not for Fubara to be contesting that.”

The ex-governor appealed directly to Fubara to make peace, urging him to take steps towards reconciliation. “I want to advise Governor Fubara again. Please, go and make amends and be at peace,” he said.

Responding to claims that Fubara had apologised several times to the FCT minister, Fayose warned that not all apologies could be considered genuine.

According to him, political allies encouraging confrontation will abandon the governor should the crisis escalate.

Drawing from his personal experience, Fayose said many among those who urged him to “fight back” during his political battles disappeared when he became isolated.

The ex-governor also argued that the emergency rule imposed on Rivers State last year worked in Fubara’s favour.

He stated that impeachment would have ended the governor’s political career, if the lingering crisis had continued.

Fayose said the situation should serve as a lesson about the limits of power and the importance of political wisdom.

“The emergency rule was all-winning for Governor Fubara. By now, he would have been history because the moment you are impeached, you’re out of the way,” he said.

Fayose stressed that the Rivers governor must learn from past political experiences, including those of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He also urged Fubara to respect constitutional authority and political realities.

Fayose advised the governor to “climb down from his high horse,” seek peace with Wike, and prioritise stability in Rivers State.

  • Makinde, Fayose in row over N50b Fed Govt’s cash support for Ibadan blast victims

Makinde, Fayose in row over N50b Fed Govt’s cash support for Ibadan blast victims

The brickbats yesterday between Governor Seyi Makinde and former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has raised dusts over the Federal Government financial support for the Oyo State Government in connection with the 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

In Fayose’s response to Makinde’s attack on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, during his media chart on Wednesday, the ex-governor accused Makinde of not mentioning the N50 billion support given to the state by the Federal Government to mitigate the effect of the explosion which affected many houses in Ibadan GRA.

But Makinde yesterday debunked the N50 billion, saying his government got N30 billion.

Fayose, in a statement he personally signed, alleged that Makinde might have diverted the money for his presidential campaign. But he provided no evidence to support his claim.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS) Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Makinde rebutted the N50 billion, saying he got only N30 billion and proceeded to explain how it was disbursed.

Makinde and Wike were members of the Group of Five Governors (G-Five) and Allies who  supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2023 against their party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate,  Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

But, they now belong to different camps in the main opposition party and hold contrasting views on its protracted leadership crisis.

While Fayose belongs to the Wike/Anyanwu faction, which is rooting for the second term ambition of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Oyo governor is the arrowhead of the Saminu Turaki faction.

Speculations are rife that Makinde is eyeing the PDP presidential ticket.

Fayose said: “Two days ago, I said on a national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde got a sum of N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention on the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

“Yesterday,  the governor responded by asking me to provide evidence that he received such money, and here is the evidence he asked for.

“Meanwhile, only N4.5bn was released to victims of the Ibadan explosion. Rather, he diverted this fund and many others to his presidential ambition, which is the reason for the crisis in the PDP and his attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his government.

“Even though it is not in my character to go public with official government documents, I had to do this so that Nigerians will know who is saying the truth, and who has not been sincere with the people of Oyo State.

Most importantly,  if as a governor,  you have elected to go on national television to disclose part of what transpired in private meetings you had with the President,  it becomes the duty of well-meaning Nigerians to give full disclosure.

“Lastly, I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. Let me also tell him that there are proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government, which the governor refused to disclose to the people.

“Also, there are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim. But we will keep our gunpowder dry for now.”

     Makinde got only N30b,says aide

Olanrewaju denied the allegation by Fayose that his principal got N50billion, saying that it is misleading and deliberately disingenuous.

He also denied insinuations that the governor has been silent about the fund and saving it with an intention to spend it on his political ambition.

Olanrewaju said since Makinde did not know the amount received from the Federal Government, Fayose could not provide evidence on the disbursement when asked to do so.

However, the media aide clarified that N30billion was released out of the requested sum, adding that the balance of N20billion was trapped due to request for inducement.

He did not name those officials who requested for inducement.

Olanrewaju said: “Recent comments attributed to former Governor Ayodele Fayose, alleging that the Federal Government handed N50billion to Seyi Makinde and that the governor chose to stay silent while saving up the money to support his presidential ambition are not only misleading, they are deliberately disingenuous.

“Let us be clear from the outset. The Federal Government did not give Governor Makinde N50billion. This is why Fayose was unable to provide evidence to show the disbursement when asked to do so. In fact, the memo he shared shows what was not disbursed.

What exists on record is a request and a promise, not a disbursement of N50billion.

“In the immediate aftermath of the tragic January 2024 Bodija explosion, which claimed lives, destroyed homes, and traumatised an entire community, President Bola Tinubu did not visit Oyo State.

“Governor Makinde travelled to Abuja personally, armed with a comprehensive report of the incident and a formal request for support from the Federal Government. Following that engagement, the Federal Government promised a N50billion support package.

“A promise, however, is not a release. When it was time to act, only N30billion was released.

“Was the Governor expected to convene a press conference to announce that the Federal Government had promised N50 billion, released N30 billion, and was withholding N20 billion? Or to publicly litigate negotiations around a national tragedy?

“What matters is what was done with the fund that was released.

“To be clear, Governor Makinde did acknowledge Federal Government support during the inauguration of a transparent committee set up to oversee the disbursement of relief funds. That committee ensured accountability, compassion, and proper use of the funds.

“Of the N30 billion released, some money was transferred directly to victims as immediate support. Whilst the remainder was deployed for rebuilding and restoration.

“Roads within the affected axis were repaired, reconstruction is ongoing, and a planned memorial at ground zero will honour the lives lost. Policies and security architecture have also been upgraded and strengthened to ensure that such an incident does not recur in Oyo State.

“It is important to underline this point. The N4.5 billion often quoted as announced by the Oyo State government refers to direct support to victims. This represents 15 percent of the total sum released. Governor Makinde found a way of giving 15 percent back to landlords and even tenants as direct support in his usual show of empathy.

“The answer is not far-fetched. Governor Makinde recently stated, during a media chat, that he would not support President Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. This declaration carries weight because he supported him in 2023, a decision he has since openly said he regrets.

“His reason is equally clear: the growing attempt by the current administration and its allies to push Nigeria towards a one-party state. That declaration marked a turning point.”

BREAKING: Ibadan explosion: Fayose releases documents, insists Makinde got N50bn from FG

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, has released what he described as documentary evidence to support his claim that Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, received N50 billion from the Federal Government as a special intervention fund following the January 2024 explosion in Ibadan.

Fayose made the documents public on Sunday in a statement accompanied by a memo from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

He said the disclosure followed a challenge by Makinde to substantiate his earlier claim that the Oyo State Government received the funds.

“Two days ago, I stated on national television that Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde received N50bn from the Federal Government as intervention for the Ibadan explosion. Yesterday, the governor asked me to provide evidence, and here is the evidence he requested,” Fayose said.

The former governor further alleged that only N4.5 billion was disbursed to victims of the explosion, accusing Makinde of diverting the remaining funds for personal political ambitions.

“Only N4.5bn was paid to victims of the Ibadan explosion. The rest, alongside other intervention funds, was diverted to fund his presidential ambition. This, in part, explains the crisis in the PDP and his frequent attacks on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration,” he alleged.

Fayose further said he was compelled to release official documents, despite his reluctance to do so, in the interest of transparency and public accountability.

“Even though it is not in my character to go public with official government documents, I had to do this so Nigerians will know who is saying the truth and who has not been sincere with the people of Oyo State,” he said.

The former governor said that Makinde’s alleged disclosure of detail from private meeting with President Tinubu made fuller public disclosure necessary.

He challenged the governor to take legal action if he believed the allegations were false, insisting that he had sufficient proof to defend his claims.

“I challenge Governor Seyi Makinde to sue me on this. There are also proofs of other intervention funds received from Tinubu’s administration by the Oyo State Government which the governor refused to disclose to the people,” he said.

He further claimed to have documentary evidence of Oyo State’s actual Internally Generated Revenue, contrary to figures publicly stated by Makinde, noting that he would release the details at a later time.

“There are documentary evidences on the actual Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Oyo State, as against Governor Makinde’s claim, but we will keep our gunpowder dry for now.

“My name is still Ayo Fayose. I don’t say what I can’t prove,” he said.

    Obasanjo, Fayose back at war

    • Your remarks irresponsible, says ex-governor
    • OBJ: Fayose unchanged, unchangeable

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and ex-Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday resumed hostilities.

The former governor objected to what he described as Obasanjo’s irresponsible remarks about him during his 65th birthday party in Lagos on Saturday.

Obasanjo was a special guest at the event which attracted eminent personalities including Vice President Kashim Shettima, ministers, governors, ex-governors among others.

“Your leopard will never change his skin,” said Fayose in his ‘thank you’ letter to the former leader.

Obasanjo, who instantly replied the salvos, which came through an SMS, said Fayose is “unchanged and unchangable.”

Obasanjo was president between 1999 and 2007 while Fayose’s first term as governor of Ekiti State was between 2003 and 2007.

Fayose invited Obasanjo to the event and sent him money for a flight ticket from Kigali, Rwanda, where he was, to enable him attend the ceremony.

Ahead of extension of invitation to him, Fayose, who had a frosty relationship with Obasanjo, visited the former leader last month, to make peace.

He then declared that the crisis between them is over.

Obasanjo recalled the visit and how Fayose apologised to him over their past rifts at the birthday.

Before an audience of eminent people, including Ekiti State Governor Biodun Oyebanji, his Ondo State counterpart, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike; Ooni of Ile-Ife, Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Senators Opeyemi Bamidele, Gbenga Daniel, Yemi Adaramodu and Ayo Arise, the former president traced the genesis of the crisis.

He said Fayose, who could not contact him directly, sent Osita Chidoka, a former Aviation Minister, to sound him out, adding: “If he had been a good person, he should have been able to link up with him directly.”

Obasanjo said although Fayose sent money for ticket, he did not eventually buy the ticket because businessman Aliko Dangote sent an aircraft to pick him.

Obasanjo said the money was still with him.

The former president said both Fayose and his wife, Feyisetan, offended him and that they were not ‘omoluabi,’ but the wife disarmed him by acknowledging their offences and quickly apologising to him.

Obasanjo said Fayose is not the best of his political sons, although he had some achievements to his credit.

He recalled that although he had wanted to support the late Chief Samuel Kolawole Babalola  for governor of Ekiti in 2003, because he knew him very well as a leader of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), he switched to Fayose, who had warmed himself to the people when he started distributing water to residents.

Obasanjo also recalled the poultry controversy, saying that when he got to Ekiti to inaugurate the agricultural project, he noticed that there were no smelling faeces to show that the chickens were nurtured there.

He said former Governor Olagunsoye Oyinlola nodded affirmatively that there was a foul play, having warned his Ekiti counterpart that Obasanjo, being a farmer, knew how poultry should be run.

Obasanjo also said Fayose lied against him by telling the whole world that he solicited huge money from former PDP governors towards his library project.

He said the former governors donated out of their own volition, adding that he never owed Fayose N10 million, contrary to his claim.

It was not the first time the former president and governor exchanged hot words in the public.

Over 10 years ago, they clashed during Oyinlola’s birthday in Okuku. When Obasanjo, in the presence of guests decribed Fayose as a ‘bastard,’ Fayose replied, saying that Obasanjo is the father of bastards.

Former military President Ibrahim Babangida was at the ceremony.

Throughout Obasanjo’s tirade at the birthday, Fayose and his wife, Feyisetan, stood on the podium, with the former governor beaming some smiles that concealed his resentment.

In Fayose’s ‘thank you’ letter to Obasanjo, which was confirmed by his Special Assistant on Media, Kehinde Akinyemi, he replied the missiles.

He said: “Dear Baba Obasanjo, I trust this meets you well. Your coming to my birthday party, I appreciate, except for your very irresponsible comments at your age. You went so low, but I am not surprised because someone once said you are supposed be kept away in the zoo. Sincerely, that’s where you belong.

“I kept quiet or did not reply you at the function so that the world will know the difference between a sane and a mad man that you are. It is also obvious that you have also lost your sanity or should I say it is the heightened stage of dementia.”

Fayose added: “Not to worry Baba, I shall set the records straight in due course.  Lastly, I shall appreciate if you return my money since you publicly admitted you received it but Dangote brought you back.

“Your leopard will never change his skin”, the letter reads.”

Replying the former governor tacitly, Obasanjo texted: “Ayo, thanks for your “Thank You” message, which undisguisedly revealed who and what you are, unchanged and unchangeable.

“Your money has been sent back through Foluso Adeagbo, who brought it and in the same bag as he brought it unopened by me.”
