Fayose expresses fear over Ekiti poll

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose yesterday visited the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

The governor said he was at the commission’s national headquarters to express his fears on the July governorship poll in his state.

Fayose, who addressed reporters after an initial decline, said the activities of opposition parties had raised what he called disturbing concerns.

He said: “As a public officer, I feel that it is important to express my disfavour on issues that have to do with INEC and some other concerns and the bragging of some of opposition figures at the centre in respect of the governorship election in July. I said I should come and have an interactive session with INEC and share my fears.

“INEC is a public place, a public office. Any citizen of this nation should be able to ask questions. I have come here to ask questions on the July 14 election in my state, and as they affect the 2019 general elections.

“We hear a lot of things and we feel it is within our right to ask INEC questions.

“I was well received by all the national commissioners seated. I expressed my concerns about what I have heard and what have been making the rounds. It was a very useful session; quiet educative.”

On what he took away from the interactive session with INEC officials, Fayose said: “So far, so good. They have been able to allay my fears. I don’t want to sit down there and assume anything. I am a man of action. I am very proactive and I would not take a chance.

“I felt I should see them and ask questions. I have asked a number of questions and they have answered me. They have gone through the whole process and what to expect from INEC. They promised not to descend. That is assuring, and I am satisfied. If I have further issues or questions to ask, I won’t fail to ask.”

Fayose decries delay in renaming FUOYE

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has urged the Federal Government to fulfill its promise of renaming its university located in Oye-Ekiti after the late Maj.-Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo.

Fayose in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari wondered why the change of name promised by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had not been effected nine months after Adebayo’s funeral in his hometown, Iyin-Ekiti.

Adebayo, the former Military Governor of old Western Region/State, died on March 9, last year and was buried on May 20.

Osinbajo, then Acting President, on behalf of Buhari at the funeral service held at the All Saints Anglican Church, Iyin-Ekiti, announced the decision to rename FUOYE as Adeyinka Adebayo University.

Osinbajo said the decision was taken “in recognition of the exemplary leadership of the late hero and frontline statesman”.

Fayose, said his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Idowu Adelusi, in a letter dated January 29, 2018, with reference number EK/GOV/28/93, urged the President to effect the change “without further delay”.

The letter reads: “As Your Excellency is aware, the late General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo (Military Governor of defunct Western State and  one time Head of the Nigerian Army) died last year.

“Your Excellency was represented at his burial on May 20, 2017 by the then Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (GCON) at Iyin-Ekiti, his home town.

“The Acting President at the occasion announced the decision of the Federal Government to rename the Federal University, Oye Ekiti as Adeyinka Adebayo University in recognition of the exemplary leadership of the late hero and frontline Statesman.

“However, more than seven months after this pronouncement, nothing has been done.

“Your Excellency, this letter therefore is to serve as reminder of this significant decision of the your Government so as to enable appropriate directive(s) and implementation.”

Herdsmen attacks: Victims’ blood will fight back, says Fayose

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has said the blood of victims of herdsmen attacks in Benue State will fight both the attackers and their sponsors.

He spoke yesterday when he visited the grave of the 73 people killed by suspected Fulani herdsmen on January 1.

Fayose prayed for the repose of their souls.

Governor Samuel Ortom called for the arrest and prosecution of Miyetta Allah Kautal Houre who he said are behind the attacks.

  • Akinwunmi: Fayose’s deputy can succeed him

Akinwunmi: Fayose’s deputy can succeed him

Dickson Akinwumi is a former Private Secretary to the late Mrs. Hannah Dideolu Awolowo and the President of ‘Concerned Ekiti Professionals for Good Governance.’ In this interview with reporters in Ado- Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, he speaks on the chances of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the governorship poll. Sunday Omoniyi was there.

What is your assessment of the Fayose administration in the last three years?

Since Ekiti State people chose Governor Ayodele Fayose to govern them right from his first tenure in 2003, I don’t think the people have regretted ever voting for him. In his first term in office, he was able to commence add and complete the dualisation of the township roads in the capital city of Ado Ekiti. It was obvious that his good works made it easy for him to be re-elected in 2014. Since then, he has surpassed the achievements of anybody, either military or civilian who had at one time of the other governed the state.  Fayose built the state-owned Fountain Hotel; dualised the Ado-Ikere Ekiti road; expanded the Ilawe Ekiti, Ijero Ekiti and Ikere Ekiti township roads and built the only computer village in Ado Ekiti. Even with the meagre resources, particularly its low internally generated revenue (IGR), Governor Fayose embarked on the construction of the ultra-modern Oba market in Ado Ekiti. This is a market that has about 400 shops, with a park that can contain so many cars. I want to also commend the governor for constructing a flyover from Fajuyi area of the town to ease the flow of traffic in the state capital. The government has also been able to empower many of the local artisans, by patronising them. The government’s efforts in the educational sector have also started yielding fruit, as the results of Ekiti students have greatly improved in both WAEC and NECO examinations. Fayose has also done well in the area of internal security, where this government made efforts to checkmate external forces from disturbing the peace of the state. In all of these, Governor Fayose still remains one of the most criticised governors in the country. He is also one of the very few that criticises the government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Most times, this has made him incur the wrath of many Nigerians. He has constantly remained a vociferous critic of the Buhari-led government. In all of these, I think the government of Fayose needs to improve in areas such as agriculture, tourism, sports and IGR.

What can we say about his critics?

Those who criticise Fayose have done well. Their constant criticism has made him more popular; it spurs him to deliver more on the dividends of democracy. The constant criticism propels him to constantly be on his toes, in order to improve on the lots of the people. I must also state that some critics are sometimes sentimental, because they are not from the governor’s political party. Thus, some of the criticisms are politically motivated. In the midst of these criticisms, some of us still give kudos to both the critics and the criticised, because, if all are done without bias, it is still part of our democratic process.

What is your take on Fayose’s endorsement of his deputy?

Let me tell you, endorsement is part and parcel of our entire lives. In traditional setting, kingmakers have the right to endorse who becomes the next king in a town or kingdom. In a church, a sitting general overseer or the church’s parochial council or board of trustees has the right to endorse who becomes the next general overseer. In the corporate world, the founder of a company has the right to either nominate or endorse who becomes the next managing director of the company. Look, endorsement has been and will ever remain part of our democratic culture or corporate existence. Now back to the endorsement of Prof. Kolapo Olusola Eleka, there is still a time for primary elections, which I believe will take place in April this year and I want to implore other aspirants to work very hard with the delegates who will vote during the primary. I have been involved in observing the politics of the state for a very long time. Let me inform you that a former governor, Chief Segun Oni, did not win the primary of the PDP. He came fourth in the primary held at Trade Fair Complex, Ado Ekiti. Chief Yinka Akerele came first and Prof. Ojo came second, but the party leadership gave the ticket to Oni, after so much energy and time had been exerted in the selection or election process. Heaven did not fall then. Some of the bigwigs now aspiring to contest against Prof. Eleka were very senior or influential party members then. I can boldly tell you that Ambassador Dare Bejide, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who are now raising eyebrows towards the 2018 governorship primary election, either ignorantly or intentionally or covertly refused to raise eyebrows then. While I still believe that Governor Fayose has the right to endorse anyone he prefers as his successor, and Professor Eleka’s co-aspirants too have the moral rights to contest, I want to implore all of them to desist from acts that could ignite violence in the process. Ekiti State is for all of us and we must all join hands to put the state on the path of progress and development.

Is the PDP ready for 2019?

Nigerians voted for the APC in 2015 in order to bring about the promised change. As things are now, it is evident that Nigerians are not impressed with the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and this is energising the PDP to make moves to regain power. The PDP as a party is getting set to regain the lost territories. The first step was the recently held national convention which produced Chief Uche Secondus as the National Chairman of the party. Though there were some grievances after the convention, it is normal in Nigerian democracy. It is a plus that the party held an open election and people campaigned, people voted and a winner emerged. The party has put a reconciliation body in place and the process is achieving results.

  • Lamido visits Fayose, says APC must go in 2019

Lamido visits Fayose, says APC must go in 2019

Former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, has urged Nigerians to sack the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in the 2019 general election.

Lamido, who is eyeing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) the presidential ticket, said Nigerians made a “grievous mistake” by voting President Muhammadu Buhari into power in 2015.

The former Minister of Foreign Affairs said Nigerians now look up to PDP for salvation in 2019 as APC has failed to manage various crises on its hand including the herdsmen attacks in some parts of the country.

He said Nigeria has never witnessed hatred and bloodletting across ethnic and religious divides since independence as being witnessed under the APC regime.

Lamido spoke on Tuesday in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, where he held talks with Governor Ayo Fayose on his presidential ambition.

He commended Fayose for being outspoken against the alleged failure and excesses of the APC government, saying the 2019 polls offer the PDP an opportunity to regain power at the centre.

Lamido said: “We can defeat them easily if we all share the same thought and pains as Nigerians are feeling now.

“You (Fayose) are a man of courage and a man of character who is able to stand up for the people despite intimidation.  I respect you, I admire you and like you a lot.

“I have come to discuss with you about our party and look at Nigeria in 2019. APC is stealing under the cover of anti -corruption fight. In Nigeria, the only hope in 2019 is PDP, because APC is a contraption.

“In PDP, we were in power for 16 years, somehow we lost out, we should ask the question, where was Nigeria before PDP?

“The vision of our founding fathers, like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Aminu Kano , Ahmadu Bello and Tafawa Balewa had been that there should be a Nigeria populated by human beings first not tribes, regions or zones.

“They (APC) are exploiting our differences, manipulate our emotions and divided us and gradually turning us into a country where we hate one another.

“Fulani, Tiv and Hausa are now killing each other, blood flowing all over Nigeria. God is angry with us in Nigeria.

“What do we do? The party in power has no political history and only came to divide us, impose culture of hate. Intimidation and blackmail had become the order of the day.”

Responding, Fayose described Lamido as eminently qualified to be president of Nigeria, saying he remains one of the few detribalized Fulani leaders with capacity and exposure to deliver.

The governor advised Nigerians not to vote for any retired military man as president, saying the current experience was enough to teach a strong lesson that only a democrat can deliver.

He said: “The military bastardised the system. They destroyed this country and this is why Nigerians should stop voting military men, they are not politicians.

“Some people say APC will rig election but I tell them, God rules in the affairs of man. Power belongs only to God almighty.

“Whether you call it presidential or vice presidential aspiration, all I know that you will come to visit me in Aso Rock in 2019.”

  • Fayemi to Fayose: we shall meet in court over your ban

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said the latest suit by the Ekiti State government accusing him of fraud is “a desperate attempt to tarnish his public service record”.

In a statement by his media aide, Olayinka Oyebode, the minister expressed his readiness to meet the Ayo Fayose government in court.

He said: “This just goes to show their level of desperation to tarnish Dr Fayemi’s public service record. The government, out of desperation, refused to release the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the report of the panel to Fayemi’s counsel, more than a month after he sent in a written application for the CTC of the report.

“The lawyer asked for the CTC of the report as part of the documents he needed for a suit he filed challenging the outcome of the panel. Now, the same government, which refused to release the report, is going to court based on the same report.

“Can you see mischief, double standard and deliberate witch-hunting? But we shall meet in court.”

  • Ekiti ex-commissioner initiates N20b suit against Fayose, others

A former Commissioner for Finance in Ekiti State, Mr. Dapo Kolawole, has instituted a N20 billion suit against Governor Ayo Fayose and two of his aides for alleged libel.

Kolawole also sued the governor, the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Accountant General of the Federation, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Debt Management Office (DMO).

Equally joined in the suit are: the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Secretary to Ekiti State Government (SSG), Accountant General of Ekiti State and the state’s Commissioner for Finance.

He is praying the court to hold that the outstanding N11 billion, being awaited as refunds from the Federal Government on Ado-Ifaki Road, should not be given to the Fayose administration as the road was built by the Kayode Fayemi administration.

Kolawole is demanding N10 billion each from Fayose’s spokesman, Lere Olayinka, and the House of Assembly member for alleged criminal libel and defamation in the statement they allegedly made on a television and radio programme.

The two officials claimed that Kolawole and Dr. Fayemi plunged the state into debt to the tune of N85 billion, which they said will not be liquidated until 2036.

Other prayers in Kolawole’s suit include an order mandating the EFCC (ninth defendant) to probe the circumstances of the diversion and breach of appropriation laws of Ekiti State through the cancellation of the original contract, that is Ikere-Iju-Ondo Boundary dualisation, without first ensuring that all laws and processes of the state government was adhered to.

Ekiti APC laments imminent collapse of Water Company

…Says Fayose attitude driving investors away

The All Progressives Congress ( APC ) in Ekiti State has expressed concern over the alleged refusal of Governor Ayo Fayose to sustain the state investment in Warm Springs Water Limited.

The party rued the imminent collapse of the company which was floated by the Adeniyi Adebayo administration in partnership with United African Company (UAC) Limited. The company produces the popular Gossy Water.

APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement on Thursday lamented that the policies of the Fayose administration has been driving investors away from the state.

Olatunbosun said the imminent collapse of the company was an evidence Fayose’s neglect of government enterprises that have potentials to generate jobs for Ekiti people.

It was learnt that the board of Warm Spring Waters Limited had given liquidation notice to stakeholders, citing failure of the company to pay its debts and other challenges.

Olatunbosun cited the closure of GTB, Ecobank and Coca Cola over their alleged refusal to surrender their corporate social responsibility cash to Fayose as reasons why they were forced out of the state.

Olatunbosun said the latest on the list of the shut down businesses would be Gossy Water to be liquidated at the extra ordinary general meeting of the company on February 6th, 2018.

“One major reason for the winding up of the company is the unfavourable business environment such that there was no electricity supply to the company to run effectively for three years, including the non-patronage of the company’s product by Fayose’s administration because the company was the initiative of his predecessor.
