  • Fayose, Mark, Olujimi seek action to reduce poverty

To reduce the pervasive poverty in the land, there must be holistic efforts from the government and the elites, it was learnt yesterday.

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, former Senate President David Mark and the denator representing Ekiti South, Abiodun Olujimi, made the call at the launch of a book written by the senator representing Ekiti Central, Bode Ola, titled: Why The Poor Are Still With Us in Abuja.

Fayose, who was represented by Ayodele Oladimeji, noted that unemployment was affecting the lives of youths.

The governor said the nation’s elite as well as the government have key roles to play in addressing the poverty challenges.

He decried increasing unemployment and underemployment rates in the land.

Fayose said: “Today, the major challenge is unemployment. After unemployment, we equally have underemployment. I spoke with two people in Ekiti State on Sunday: the husband is teaching at a primary school and the wife is equally teaching in another nursery and primary school. Each of them earns N15,000 per month. You can then imagine the condition of the children this couple will rear.”

On the book, the governor said it captures the challenges confronting the poor masses of the country and proffered solutions.

He urged the elite to use the book for the benefit of the masses.

Fayose said: “The book highlights the challenges of the poor masses. What are their needs? What can the elite do to assist them?”

Mark noted that the book launch was timely because it sought to identify the major causes of poverty and how to eradicate it from the society.

He said: “I cannot think of a more important and timely topic for Nigeria than issue of poverty and the large number of the poor in the society.”

Olujimi stressed the need to prioritise the welfare of the people.

The senator decried the level of poverty in the country, saying the people were becoming spiritually and socially poor.

She noted that “a country where its citizens die because they could not afford a malaria drug of N1,000 is a poor country”.

Olujimi called for reorientation among the people, saying: “Government needs to take charge and look after the people.”

Senator Bode Ola said poverty was a major bane to posterity.

Quoting the world’s statistics on poverty, the senator said this should be a source of concern to all, considering the state of the nation’s economy.

He also blamed funds mismanagement and overdependence on oil for the menace.

On the book, Ola said it was his passion and compassion for the poor that prompted his writing.

He said: “This book was borne out of my passion and compassion for the poor. It is said that poverty is a threat to prosperity. The rich cannot sleep because the poor are awake. With the present state of things in Nigeria, it is a concern to everyone.

“The world’s statistics on poverty is a source of concern; as a politician, it is a concern. The book tries to answer three questions. These include: what is poverty? Why poverty is still with us. This involves mismanagement of resources and overdependence on crude oil. It is because of oil we neglected other areas.”

The senator suggested the establishment of a University of Entrepreneurship Education where youths can learn the art of wealth creation through self-generated ideas as well as self-dependence.

Prof. Gbenga Ibileye of Kogi State University, who reviewed the 160-page book, said it is filled with theoretical insights and actionable recommendations.

The expert noted that if followed, the book would show genuine process of curing Nigeria of the toga of chronic poverty and usher the nation into the realm of prosperity.

According to him, this will eventually eradicate or sufficiently alleviate poverty in the land.

Ibileye added that the book, which is divided into eight chapters, captures poverty, the causes and the solutions.

•Case adjourned till January 12 for adoption of addresses

A former Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) Chairman in Ekiti State, Rotimi Olanbiwonnu, has told a State High Court that he was roped into a murder case because he refused to support Governor Ayo Fayose for the 2014 governorship race.

Olanbiwonnu is standing trial with six other accused persons for their alleged complicity in the killing of the former State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Omolafe Aderiye.

Omolafe was killed on September 25, 2014 at his private motor park at Ijigbo area of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

Other accused persons are: another ex-RTEAN chair, Adebayo Aderiye, Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) leader Adeniyi Adedipe, Sola Durodola, Kayode Ajayi, Oso Farotimi and Sola Adenijo.

Farotimi and Adenijo denied involvement in the killing of Omolafe and claimed that they were roped into the murder.

At yesterday’s resumed hearing of the matter before Justice Lekan Ogunmoye of High Court 6, Olanbiwonnu, who appeared as a defence witness, averred that he was taken to the Government House in Ado-Ekiti after he was arrested on July 27, 2015, 10 months after Omolafe’s killing.

Olanbiwonnu said he was in Abuja for the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of RTEAN the day Omolafe was killed but learnt of the incident on September 26, 2014 on the pages of newspapers when he was returning home.

The witness said the police team, which arrested him at midnight on July 27, 2015, was led by Fayose’s Chief Security Officer (CSO).

He said the CSO took him to Osuntokun Lodge of the Government House, where he was paraded before the governor.

Olanbiwonnu said: “When they took me to the Government House, the governor said: ‘See yourself now, I asked you to support me the other time, but you refused.’ He asked them to take me away.

“From the Government House, they took me to the state police headquarters and handed me over to Inspector Felix Whessu, who told me that an order came from Abuja that I should be taken to the court in the morning.

“My police statement was written by Inspector Whessu around 1.00 a.m; it was completed at 2 a.m. By 7 a.m, I was brought to the court and they waited till the court officially opened.

“Magistrate (Idowu) Ayenimo said I was arrested with Form ‘K’ and he ordered that I be remanded. Between September 25, 2014 and the time of my arrest on July 27, 2015, I was in Ado-Ekiti, there was no investigation.”

After the defence closed its case, Olanbiwonnu’s driver and personal assistant, Adeoye Oladele, was brought to the court to testify.

Justice Ogunmoye adjourned the matter till January 12, 2018, for the adoption of the final written addresses of the counsel.

Nigeria’s unity not negotiable, says Fayose

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has said the nation’s unity is not negotiable but must be backed by justice, equity and fairness to every section.

Fayose spoke at the weekend in Gombe, the capital, at the cultural display by different dance groups after the coronation of Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo as the Tafidan Tangale in Billiri Local Government Area of the state.

The Ekiti State governor said Nigeria deserved a leadership that believes in all parts of the country and not in some sections of it.

He said: “As much as we believe in the unity of Nigeria, we must also continue to add justice and fairness.

“No section in Nigeria should feel used or oppressed by the leadership of our country. But the unity of Nigeria is not negotiable.”

Fayose hailed Gombe State residents for ensuring unity and displaying their rich culture.

He said: “Well, this is a very good culture. There could be a culture without foot drivers of such culture, no matter how rich.

“…Dankwambo has demonstrated good leadership by promoting a rich culture, his people and celebrating them.”

The governor could not resist joining in the cultural dance.

He urged others to emulate the rich cultural display among Gombe State residents to promote unity and progress of the country.

Hailing Dankwambo, Fayose said: “For him to have won an election in this part of this country in 2015 means he is an outstanding politician who should be celebrated. I’m glad to be part of that celebration today.”

Lawyer urges police to arrest Fayose’s aide

A lawyer in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, Mr. Michael Daramola, has petitioned the police, demanding the arrest of a media aide to Governor Ayo Fayose, Mr. Lere Olayinka, and three others.

They were accused of “alleged offensive posts on Facebook and other social media platforms against the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

In a petition addressed to Police Commissioner Mr. Abdullahi Chafe, Daramola complained of “criminal, incessant and unabated social media character assassination of Fayemi in violation of the Cyber Crime Act 2015.”

According to the November 20 petition, others allegedly engaged in the act with Olayinka were Bola Agboola, Debola Akingbade and Adebomojo Akeem.

The lawyer urged the police boss to “use his good office to bring these culprits to justice by investigating their infractions, infringements and invasion of the privacy of our client’s mentor and save our client and the society from their nefarious, criminal, malicious and calculated mischievous posts.”

Daramola explained that he was writing on the instruction of another lawyer, Mr. Adeoye Aribasoye, who described himself as a mentee of Fayemi, a former governor of Ekiti State, who he said needed the protection of the police against “incessant and unabated criminal character assassination” by the quartet and cronies working in concert with them.

Enclosed in the petition are copies of postings on Facebook and other social media platforms portraying Fayemi in bad light and calling him derogatory, uncomplimentary and libellous names; and annexure to substantiate the case.

  • Fayose slams Lagos lawyer over Malami’s claim

•Governor must prove allegation, says Lagos lawyer

EKITI State Governor Ayodele Fayose has criticised human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), over allegations by the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), linking the lawyer to a N1 billion property he allegedly bought.

Fayose said it was “embarrassing, shameful, disgraceful that such a man of his stature, reputed to be a human rights activist, friend of the masses, crusader of justice and defender of democracy could be linked to such scandal”.

Addressing reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, Fayose said: “It is has become necessary to add my voice to the new scandal, where you find our supposed men of honour, defenders of democracy, crusaders of justice, people who want corruption stamped out of our land, allegedly traced to similar unfortunate purchases of alleged stolen property, especially, when such allegations are coming from the number one Minster of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).”

The embattled former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, had accused Falana of buying the building, which was one of the properties he allegedly helped to seize from pension thieves and handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

Malami had, while testifying before the National Assembly, last week, echoed the allegation, saying the property was sold to a ‘Lagos lawyer’.

But Fayose said: “The disclosure by the Minister of Justice and Attorney-General of the Federation that a Lagos-based lawyer was one of many highly placed Nigerians who allegedly were compensated by the EFCC and Ibrahim Magu with properties retrieved from corrupt government officials was initially taken with a pinch of salt.

”However, Mr. Falana, friend and defender of every obnoxious act by EFCC and Magu, has come into the open to not only give veracity to the allegation but also admit that he was the Lagos-based lawyer in question.”

Falana has, however, denied the allegation.

Reacting to Fayose’s comments, the Lagos lawyer said: “You may wish to advise the garrulous governor of  Ekiti State to prove  the monstrous allegation. Since I pressured the state to charge Mr. Fayose  and his armed goons with the cold murder of Dr. Ayo Daramola and  Tunde Omojola he has been desperately to link with criminal activities, Mr. Fayose has once again  to prove the allegation that I acquired any property illegally.”

  • Party blasts Fayose’s plan to buy Xmas wears for kids

Party blasts Fayose’s plan to buy Xmas wears for kids

    •PDP: opposition is anti-people

The plan by Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose to buy Christmas clothes for 10,000 children has drawn the ire of the main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party wondered why the governor is embarking on the year-end gesture when his administration owes workers months of arrears.

It described the move as another plan to make money from the impoverished masses.

APC noted that over half of the actual cost could end up in some private pockets.

The party urged the public to be wary of another gimmick to defraud them.

But the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) warned the APC to mind its business.

The ruling party said the opposition’s criticism of the governor’s love for children showed it as “anti-people, myopic and unfriendly”.

Fayose announced that he will buy Christmas clothes for 10,000 children “as a mark of showing Ekiti children love to partake in the sharing of the state’s wealth”.

A statement yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the capital, by APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, noted that rather than buy Christmas clothes for 10,000 children, the governor should pay their parents.

The party said this would bring relief to families wallowing in poverty and want.

It said: “It is high time Ekiti people, workers and labour leaders opened their eyes and minds to Fayose’s deliberate deceit before majority of our people end up in early graves.

“Fayose should pay salaries, pensions and gratuities of parents of those children he is planning to buy Christmas clothes for, to enable them perform their parental roles, instead of the governor buying cheap clothes at exorbitant costs, more than half of which will end up in private pockets, as we had during National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Teachers’ Day celebrations.

“The workers and pensioners know their responsibilities as parents to their children, if the eight to nine months’ salary and pensions arrears are paid.”

It added: “It is sheer greed, wickedness and callous insensitivity to Ekiti people’s plight for Fayose to refuse to address doctors’ strike in public hospitals over unpaid salaries while other workers remain unpaid for between six and nine months. But he is planning and talking of buying Christmas clothes for 10,000 Ekiti children.

“Fayose is doing this because he wants to make money from such unsolicited show of love while tens of hundreds of Ekiti indigenes, old and young, are dying in Ekiti hospitals for lack of medical services as a result of the governor’s insensitivity to the immediate needs of our people over non-payment of doctors and civil servants’ salaries and pensioners.”

PDP’s Publicity Secretary Jackson Adebayo said APC’s latest attack showed its hatred for Ekiti residents, whose lives the ruling party said were being positively touched by Fayose’s policies.

He said: “Nobody should be surprised by their criticism of the governor’s gesture of love, which is unprecedented in the history of the state, and that was why the people rejected them at the 2014 governorship election where they lost woefully.

“Governor Fayose is a friend of the masses. This is one of the ways to prove that he is the man of the people and the people will continue to love him and vote for the PDP while APC will continue to fail and fail and fail.”

  • Fayose’s anointed aspirant is a stranger, says ex-SSG

THE crisis rocking Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is far from over as one of the governorship aspirants, Ambassador Dare Bejide, has described the Deputy Governor, Prof. Kolapo Olusola, as a “stranger whose imposition must be resisted by wellmeaning party members.

” Governor Ayo Fayose and his loyalists in the party on September 6 adopted Olusola as “the sole candidate” and their preferred choice for the July 14, 2018 governorship election. Many party chieftains and members are kicking against Olusola’s choice which they described as “imposition and an attempt to shut out other aspirants.” Speaking on Thursday while on a familiarisation tour to Ekiti West and Efon Local Government Areas, Bejide urged agitated PDP leaders and members to disregard Olusola’s adoption for the party flag ahead of next year’s poll.

  • Ekiti doctors to Fayose: pay our salaries

Ekiti doctors to Fayose: pay our salaries

Doctors are avoiding working in Ekiti State because of poor working conditions occasioned by unpaid salaries and low funding of the State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH).

The Chairman of the state chapter of Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Dr. Kunle Ajayi, who spoke yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, urged Governor Ayo Fayose to save the Health sector from collapse.

Ajayi spoke at the inauguration of the union’s secretariat/office complex, MDCAN House, located on EKSUTH premises.

The building was inaugurated by Fayose, who was represented by Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olurotimi Ojo.

The commissioner urged the doctors to bear with the government.

Doctors in the employ of Ekiti State government are owed between seven and eight months of unpaid salaries.
