Obasanjo’s third term plot was real – Fayose

Ex- President knew about Yar’Adua’s ill-health before 2007 poll

How Obasanjo knelt down for Gaddafi

The Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, said the aborted third term agenda of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo was real.

He said the principal officers of the National Assembly got N100 million each in 2006, while the rest of the lawmakers were paid N50 million per head.

He alleged that the former President knelt down for the late Libyan leader, Mouamar Gaddafi, to seek his backing for third term.

He also said Obasanjo knew about the ill-health of the late President Umaru Yar’Adua before he was elected as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007.

The governor made the startling revelations in the July 18, 2017 edition of THE INTERVIEW, a magazine published by a former Editor of THE PUNCH, Mr. Azubuike Ishiekwene.

Fayose said: “Yes it is true. The people I am going to mention here, two of the key players are now dead. That position of Presidential Selection Committee that I headed was set up by all PDP governors. Initially, they wanted Dr. Olusegun Agagu. Then, the majority insisted that they wanted Fayose. So, since the majority wanted me, Baba (Olusegun Obasanjo) invited me to Ota and encouraged me to go ahead. I remember the committee was made up of Governors Danjuma Goje, Ahmed Makarfi, Bukola Saraki, James lbori, me and one other person who I cannot remember now. I want to tell you that, at some point, the majority of the committee was more disposed to having Makarfi as the presidential nominee. l and one other person were the only dissenters

“So, as a loyal Obasanjo boy then, I went to Obasanjo then and told that this committee that was set up, everybody seemed to prefer Makarfi except me and one other person and we were in the minority.

“Five out of seven governors wanted Makarfi. Then Obasanjo pointedly told me that Markafi was too smart and would not be easily controlled by him and, therefore, I must ensure that Makarfi did not emerge the presidential candidate. He mandated me to be briefing him often about the way things were going.

“He confided in me that whether it was Makarfi or anybody that he was not prepared to leave. At that time, the third term agenda had begun to unfold in Abuja. I can tell you that l was co-opted into the secret committee that was behind it. In that body, we had had this senator from Plateau, Ibrahim Mantu, Senator Andy Uba and many others. We were the key players. Let me tell you the truth: at that time, I did not have a choice. l was just a young man without experience.

“The Senate meeting started at about 11:00 a.m. in the morning and by 1:00 p.m. each senator was asked to stand up and say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ before live television coverage whether they supported third term or not, and the majority had their way. So Obasanjo’s dream of third term was shut down. Thereafter, he called a national meeting of PDP, termed reconciliation meeting and denied that he asked or worked for third term.

“Meanwhile, before that time, N50 million was given to every federal lawmaker to support third term. The majority collected the money and still voted against third term. Principal officers got N100 million each. Where did that huge sum of money came from?”

Fayose opened up on the politics behind the choice of the late President Yar’Adua as a presidential candidate of PDP.

He said the current Chairman of the PDP, Sen. Ahmed Makarfi was sidelined in favour of Yar’Adua.

He added: “Let me now come to the Yar’Adua issue. Obasanjo now called me and said, ‘Now that third term has failed, you should go ahead with the PDP committee. And in order for me to check those rooting for Markafi, I should go and sound Yar’Adua out on the ticket. He told me, ‘Don’t tell him I asked you to come. You psyche him up’. So, l met Yar’Adua in his lodge in Katsina. I met Yar’Adua in the company of Yakubu Tanimu (who became his influential chief economic adviser) and his police orderly.

“I remember that while our interaction lasted, the orderly knelt down close to Yar’Adua. I acted as directed by Obasanjo, but the man told me expressly that he was not well enough to aspire to be Nigerian president; that the job would be too rigorous for him.

“After much persuasion, he then told me the only condition under which he might consider running was if all stakeholders would sign up and reach an agreement to pick him as the consensus candidate because he did not want any hassles.

“I remember, before then, Yar’Adua was hardly attending Council of State meetings because of his health. So, l went to tell Baba what Yar’Adua told me. On the issue of Yar’Adua’s ill-health. I remember Obasanjo told me, ‘Don’t worry about his sickness; government money dey to manage his ill-health.’ Baba told me to go and put the outcome of my interaction with Yar’Adua in writing.

“Then Masari became the first loser; because, until then, Bello Masari as the Speaker of House of Reps was very loyal to Baba and did all the dirty jobs Baba wanted him to do, with the promise that he would be made the next Katsina governor after Yar’Adua. But once Yar’Adua became anointed as PDP candidate, he preferred Shema to be his successor. That was one of the conditions he listed. That was how a wedge came between Yar’Adua and Masari. “That was the genesis of the rift between Shema and Masari up until today. Shema was then the deputy national chairman of PDP. That was how Masari defected to CPC. What I am trying to say is that Obasanjo engineered all the bitterness that exists in Katsina politics today

“All the confusion in Nigeria today was caused by Obasanjo in his scheming to install a stooge, a weakling in power so that he would continue to be relevant.”

Fayose also spoke on how Obasanjo went on his knees to beg Gaddafi to seek the late dictator’s support for the third term plot.

He said: “It was such a pathetic scenario, so shameful. Obasanjo was speaking rapidly like a parrot. I was shocked beyond words. I never knew Obasanjo would be that humble.

“He was on one knee till the end of the conversation. Gaddafi kept quiet and was just watching Obasanjo. When Obasanjo stopped rambling, Gaddafi said, ‘Have you finished? Just know that I will not attend that meeting. I have other engagements.”

He also explained how on two major occasions when he went to visit Atiku at the height of Obasanjo’s third term bid, security details promptly reported him to the former President, even before he left the venue.

He said:  “Obasanjo told me that when you capture a general and you don’t kill him, he’ll come back and kill you; that since Atiku tried to stop him and failed, he must pay for it. And he (Atiku) is still paying for it.”

Fayose said he knew, as an insider at the time, that Obasanjo betrayed former Liberian President, Charles Taylor, to get the United States support for this third term bid, after promising Taylor safe haven in Nigeria.”

Fayose said he had not spoken with President Muhammadu Buhari in the last two years.

•Faction denies defection to Mega Party

Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders and members loyal to the deposed National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, have said they will not leave the party after the July 12 Supreme Court judgment, which handed the party’s control to Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

Speaking under the aegis of PDP Elders’ Forum, the politicians denied speculations that they were moving to Mega Party of Nigeria (MPN).

They maintained that they would not quit the house they laboured hard to build.

The politicians distanced themselves from the newly-formed MPN which was unveiled in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, few days ago.

They said the alleged defection was “the decision of a few members to pitch their tent with the new party without adequate consultation with the leaders of the PDP”.

The forum said PDP members in the state should remain in the party, adding that the verdict of the Supreme Court had not affected the state chapter in a way that would necessitate defection to another party.

Rising from a meeting on Saturday hosted by the first state’s party chairman and former Senate Deputy Chief Whip, Chief Clement Awoyelu, the forum members resolved to work hard for the party’s victory ahead of next year’s governorship election.

  • Fayose, Omisore want to destroy PDP —Kashamu

Fayose, Omisore want to destroy PDP —Kashamu

Senator Buruji Kashamu has alleged that Governor Ayo Fayose and Senator Iyiola Omisore are planning to destroy the Peoples Democratic Party in South-West.

He said both men were behind the crisis rocking the party in the zone, but said none of them has the capacity to drive him out of the former ruling party.

The Senator representing Ogun East senatorial district in the Senate stated this in a statement he signed  yesterday.

He denied any plan to defect to another political party, just like some of those described as his political associates had moved to Mega Party of Nigeria.

He said: “I wish to state without mincing words that the misleading report linking me with the move was concocted and spread on the social media by one Lere Olayinka who is a well-known attack dog of Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose.

“While it is true that the 14-month leadership crisis that engulfed our party started as a result of Fayose and ex-Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s attempt to perpetrate impunity and cut short the tenure of elected party executives, I mediated between the two leaders, pointing out their virtues and mistakes as someone who has related with them over time.

“I proposed a political solution to the leadership crisis. But when all that failed, they went the whole hog of the judicial system.

“It is also on record that when the Supreme Court gave its judgment, I congratulated the National Chairman, Senator Makarfi, and other members of the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) on the verdict, and urged all aggrieved party members to unite and work with them in the overall interest of our party.

“Fayose and ex-PDP governorship candidate in Osun State, Senator Iyiola Omisore, then got their illegal puppets, Sikirulai Ogundele and Bayo Faforiji, into the NEC meeting until they (including Omisore) were sent out by the National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, upon the observation raised by a member of the Board of Trustees, Alhaji Shuaibu Oyedokun.

“These men never took part in state congresses held before the national leadership crisis broke out in May, 2016, but were handpicked by a member of the House of Representatives from Ogun State, Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu and Omisore, both of whom are nursing governorship ambitions.

“But as for me, Fayose and Omisore cannot push me out of the PDP. They do not have what it takes. I am not going anywhere.

“I remain a strong mobiliser for the PDP and one of its leaders in the South West. That is why I cannot close my eyes to impunity and injustice.”

He said he had commenced discussions with some of the PDP members who, out of annoyance, decided to join another political platform to prove their worth.

He appealed to the leaders of the party, including the “National Chairman, Senator Ahmed Makarfi and Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, not to allow Fayose and Omisore to spoil their efforts to unite the party and reposition it.”

Kashamu further said: “I said it when the leadership crisis started that Fayose orchestrated it to pocket the party’s structure in the South West and make it easier for him to realise his ambition. Since he cannot imagine a life out of politics and power, few days after the Supreme Court judgment, he launched his so-called Presidential campaign.”

In his reaction, Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose  described Prince Kashamu  as a “drowning horse looking for what to hold unto for survival.”

Fayose, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, said Kashamu pushed himself out of the  PDP because of the several anti-party activities allegedly committed against the plaform that brought him to the Senate.

He said: “It is Buruji (Kashamu) that tried to destroy the PDP; Buruji should be ignored because he is a drowning horse looking for what to hold unto for survival or who to blackmail.

“Nobody pushed him out the PDP; he pushed himself out because of the evils he perpetrated.

“For numerous advertorials and press releases he has published in newspapers to disparage Fayose, the governor has not replied him because he  will not join issues with him.

“It is better to allow his sleeping dog to lie.”

The battle we fought was not for PDP alone – Makarfi

Leaders and key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are excited over yesterday’s victory of the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee at the Supreme Court.

After consultations, the stakeholders declared that with the victory over Sheriff, the PDP is poised to reclaim the presidency in 2019.

Describing the victory as one for democracy and the people, Makarfi said it also signified the supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny.

Said he: “This victory is not just for PDP; it’s for democracy. This affirms the powers of political parties. This affirms the powers of the convention of all political parties.

“The battle we fought was not a battle for PDP alone. It was a battle for democracy; it was a battle for supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny. And it’s a battle to do away with dictatorship in political parties and this will never repeat itself.

“We thank the rest of party men and women across Nigeria for their loyalty and steadfastness. We must thank and appreciate the judiciary for the wonderful job it has done. We never lost faith in the judiciary. We have always been saying that ultimately justice will be done.”

Makarfi said the party’s doors would remain open for reconciliation with Sheriff and other aggrieved members, including those that dumped the PDP during the crisis.

“We must be open to reconciliation. But there’s a caveat: reconciliation does not mean we take what belongs to people and give it to you. Reconciliation must be based on equity, equality, and values.

“With this caveat, we should be prepared and willing to reconcile with everybody. Anybody that can meet these criteria, we should be willing and open to reconciliation with such a person no matter who they are.

“And I assured you that those who have been waiting for this judgment were not just PDP. The whole of Nigeria today was waiting for this judgment. And the eagle has landed.

“We are going to consult within the next two to three days. And come up with a programme of meetings between  Monday and  Tuesday. And these meetings will include Expanded Caucus, BoT and NEC so that we can take some far-reaching decisions on how to take the party forward,” Makarfi added.

He called on Muslims and Christians to continue to pray for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari and PDP BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, who suffered a stroke about two days ago.

To Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, the judgment has placed the party in good stead to return to power in 2019.

According to him, the party would make maximum use of its resurgence. Power, he said, has remained dormant under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

    Fayose

He chided the ruling party for what he described as its inability to sustain the power given to it by Nigerians in the 2015 elections, saying “today is a new dawn for Nigeria”.

Fayose, who spoke in Abuja after the judgment, said governance would take its rightful place under the leadership of the PDP.

The governor also said the Makarfi camp would not engage Sheriff and his loyalists in any further struggle, but efforts would be made to reconcile them with the new leadership.

Fayose pleaded for unity and cooperation with the Makarfi leadership. He cautioned against mutual suspicion and mistrust that triggered the crisis in the first place.

Said he: “I urge us to support the Makarfi-led committee. The committee cannot please all of us. So please, let us stop suspecting ourselves. Some will lead, some will follow. So let’s give the committee support.”

Former ministers described the judgment as one of the most celebrated cases in the nation’s history.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, the chairman of the Forum Tanimu said: “The judgment is hope for democracy. The opposition will continue to survive. Without opposition, those in government won’t be able to sit up and do the work that is expected of them.”

Fayose to Osinbajo: Declare Buhari’s health status

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Wednesday asked Acting President Yemi Osinbajo to declare the health status of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Shortly after he arrived from London, where he had gone to see the President, Osinbajo told journalists that Buhari was recovering and would soon return to the country.

But Fayose said the Acting President was not telling Nigerians the truth about Buhari’s health, insisting that the President is incapacitated.

Asked for proof of his assertion on the President’s health, Fayose threatened to release 11 different photographs depicting Buhari’s incapacitation.

The governor accused the administration of running the country by deceit and propaganda, insisting that the acting President must declare to Nigerians the true state of the President’s health.

Fayose, who is the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, said Osinbajo’s claim that President Buhari is fast recuperating was not true.

He described the acting President’s trip to London as diversionary.

“Fayose said: “We pray for his ( Buhari’s) health and for him to come back in one piece. However, the claim of the Acting President that Buhari is recuperating fast was not true. The President is incapacitated, sick. There is no iota of truth that the President is in good condition.

“In this age of technology, Osinbajo should be able to show Nigerians pictures and short videos of the President to show that he is okay. Nigerians want to see their President.

“If they are not careful, I will release 11 photographs about the real health status of the President any moment from now.”

The governor recalled his earlier warning on Buhari’s health in the build up to the 2015 general elections and regretted that the warning was ignored.

PDP will recapture power in 2019, say Makarfi, Fayose, others

Leaders and key stakeholders in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were delighted at Wednesday’s Supreme Court’s ruling which confirmed Ahmed Makarfi as authentic National Chairman of the party.

The apex court, in a unanimous judgment, sacked Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman of the PDP.

After series of consultations, the stakeholders declared that with the victory over Sheriff, the party is poised to reclaim the presidency in the 2019 general election.

Describing the victory as one for democracy and the Nigerian people, Makarfi said it also signified the supremacy of the party over individual interest.

He said: “This victory is not just for PDP,  it’s for democracy. This affirms the powers of political parties. This affirms the powers of convention of all political parties.

“The battle we fought was not a battle for PDP alone. It was a battle for democracy, it was a battle for supremacy of party men and women to decide their destiny.

Makarfi, however, said despite the victory recorded by his group, the party’s doors would remain open to reconciliation with Sheriff and other aggrieved members, including those that dumped the PDP during the crisis.

“We must be open to reconciliation. But there’s a caveat: reconciliation does not mean we take what belongs to people and give it to you. Reconciliation must be based on equity, equality and values.

“With this caveat, we should be prepared and willing to reconcile with everybody. Anybody that can meet these criteria, we should be willing and open to reconciliation with such a person no matter who they are.

“Please, in our personal interactions, we should not throw insults because our other party men and women lost. We should continue as friends, knowing that there are things we can do together. There may be things we may not be able to do together.

“But we are willing to do everything on the foundation that I had mentioned. And I urge them to come forward, join hands with us and let’s see how we move PDP forward.

“And I assure you that those who have been waiting for this judgment were not just PDP.

He called on Muslim and Christian faithful in the country to continue to pray for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari and PDP BoT Chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin, who suffered stroke about two days ago.

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, declared that the judgment has placed the party on good stead to return to power in 2019.

According to him, the party would make maximum use of its resurgence, stressing that power has remained dormant under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Osun West by-election: Fayose congratulates Adeleke

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has urged Osun West senator-elect Ademola Adeleke to see his victory in last Saturday’s by-election as an invitation to serve his state, Nigeria and mankind.

Fayose, who is also the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum, congratulated Adeleke.

In a message by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, the governor urged Adeleke to represent all his constituents without discrimination.

He said the victory showed that Ademola’s elder brother, the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke, whose death led to the by-election, did not die in vain.

Fayose also hailed Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as being an epitome of democracy by conceding defeat.

The Ekiti governor noted that this is a virtue many politicians lack.

He also hailed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its transparency, adding that the electoral umpire should maintain this in future elections.

Fayose praised security agencies for preventing a breakdown of law and order during the by-election.

He said: “After an election, what should come next is how to bring dividends of democracy to the people; how to continue with the legacy of the Adeleke family, which accounted for the love displayed by the people for you and which translated to the electoral victory.

“You are responsible to all your constituents without discrimination of any sort. Having been born to a family of great politicians, with your father serving as a senator in the Second Republic, your elder brother being a former governor and senator; no doubt, you must have undergone political tutelage that you should put to practice to excel in your new calling.”

2019: I will become Nigeria’s president through divine intervention – Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, said on Friday he would become Nigeria’s president in 2019 through divine intervention.

The governor also said he supported the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s decision to zone power to the North in the next general elections.

He predicted that two events that would determine Nigeria’s future ahead of the 2019 presidential election would take place this month.

Fayose, who spoke while delivering the 13th convocation lecture of the Benson Idahosa University, Benin City, said something would give way for him to become the country’s president in 2019.

The Ekiti Governor, who spoke on the theme: “Education and Actualisation,” said he would continue to play politics until he becomes the country’s president.

He vowed never to become a member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), saying Nigerians especially the youths, were brainwashed through the social media to vote “for a President they never know.”

The governor said Nigeria’s greatest problem was not corruption but attitude of the leadership and the followers.

He accused the APC-led government of playing politics with the anti-corruption campaign, insisting that the “actual thieves are in Buhari’s government.”

Fayose said no meaningful achievements would be recorded in the educational sector if teachers were not placed on the driver’s seat.

“Teachers remain the only solution to the revival of education. Education is currently at its lowest ebb in Nigeria.

“It is carnality that makes you look at me and think I cannot be president. I am the man to watch in this generation. I surely will become the president. Something has to give way for you to manifest,” he added.

  • Oba of Benin advises Fayose

The Benin monarch, Oba Ewuare II has advised Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose to remain committed to democracy and good governance.

Oba Ewuare II said no meaningful development could take place in an environment of rancour.

The Benin monarch spoke when Fayose  visited him.

Fayose is in the state to deliver the 13th convocation lecture of the Benson Idahosa University.

Oba Ewaure II said: “We have been following some of your political wars. We are in support of resolving conflicts peacefully and we always pray for peace and we strive for it in Benin.

“I salute your commitment to democracy and good governance out there and we say keep on doing the good work in spite of the adversities being faced.”

Fayose said he was impressed with the achievements of the Benin monarch within a few months.

He said: “I represent the belief that this country must stay united in justice as without justice there would be no peace. I want to stay close to this palace and be an asset to it. You are a man of this generation and your support and advice would be invaluable.”

  • Fayose mourns

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has described the death of former Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Alhaji Maitama Sule as a loss to Nigeria and the black race.

His Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said in a statement in Ado-Ekiti yesterday that Fayose expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kano State – Maitama’s state of origin.

The governor, who described the envoy as a great nationalist, said he will be sorely missed by all.

Fayose said: “We will miss our leader, Maitama Sule, a great nationalist, who died as All Progressives Congress (APC) leader and ardent supporter of President Muhammadu Buhari and his government.

“I urge the government and entire people of Kano State as well as Alhaji Maitama Sule’s families, friends and associates to be consoled by the fact he lived a fulfilled life and that death is the inevitable end of all mortals and it must come when it would come.”
