Fayose arrests FRSC personnel for traffic offence

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, was involved in another drama on Thursday when he arrested an officer of the Federal Road Safety (FRSC) in Ikere Ekiti for driving against traffic.

Fayose personally arrested the FRSC officer while on his way to the flag off of dualization of the Ado-Ikere-Ondo State boundary road and commissioning of some projects in Ikere town as part of activities marking the first anniversary of his administration.

The FRSC officer whose name was given as Adeola Alabi left the bad portion of the road for the other lane and drove against traffic to avoid potholes and reconnect the lane he was before.

The incident which happened at Sawmill area of Ikere Ekiti caused traffic snarl as some residents came out to watch the drama.

Alabi’s action infuriated Fayose who ordered security operatives in his convoy to ensure the road safety officer was apprehended.

After he was arrested, Alabi prostrated before Fayose, begging the governor to have mercy on him.

The governor did not listen to his pleas, maintaining that law must take its course.

Fayose ordered that the Peugeot 505 Saloon car driven by Alabi should be seized and taken to the Ekiti State Traffic Management Agency (EKSTMA) yard.

The culprit is expected to cough out N50,000 as fine for driving against traffic.

    Fayose, APC disagree on performance

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have disagreed on his performance in office in the last one year.

Fayose maintained that his performance has been “satisfactory” but the APC described his showing in office as a “celebration of reversal of fortunes” for the people.

The governor, who spoke in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, insisted that he had done creditably well in office, despite the state’s financial challenges.

Fayose said: “I have said that I will leave no project uncompleted during my four–year term.  It is my duty to ensure that all Ekiti residents enjoy the dividends of democracy.

“Though, we have paucity of funds and within the little resources we have, I think I have satisfied my conscience and done creditably well”.

Speaking earlier on a radio programme, Fayose said: “Amid these challenges, we are not doing badly, it has been tough, we have been financially handicapped and we had security challenges.

“It has not been easy but God is with me. With the new bailout received, Ekiti debt now extends to 2036.

“I want to say that administrations that will come after should not commit the state to debts they cannot offset.

“When I left office the last time, I left N10.4 billion, and I inaugurated many projects.

“But despite these financially challenges, I have been able to inaugurate many projects with many others also ongoing.

“We have done our best within the scope of limited resources available to us.”

The APC Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, in a statement, said: “The experience of Ekiti people in the last one year had shown clearly that there is nothing to celebrate in terms of achievements”.

Accusing Fayose of running a one-man government without regard to the law, he cited the new unbudgeted airport project that had led to the death of a farmer.

Olatunbosun also alleged that there was no segment of the society that Fayose has not visited with pains and anguish.

He added: “Thousands of young men engaged by former Governor Kayode Fayemi have lost their jobs, promotions for civil servants and teachers by Fayemi have been cancelled and statutory allowances to civil servants have been reduced while allowances to traditional rulers were cut by 40 per cent.

“The asphalt overlay at Fayose Market he inaugurated is an MDG project paid for by the Fayemi administration.

“The asphalt plant he “inaugurated” was bought and paid for by the Fayemi administration.

“Fayose only received the equipment when they were shipped into Nigeria.

“The Matthew Street road is the joke of the century as Fayose only fixed the culvert and graded some portions of the road, which he inaugurated as a project.

”This is nothing short of taking Ekiti people for a ride. It is chicanery of the highest form.”

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has suspended work in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

This followed a meeting with land owners and farmers at Jibowu Hall of the Government House yesterday.

An oil palm plantation farmer, Tijani Hakeem, was said to have died of shock after the destruction of economic trees on his plantation by government bulldozers.

It was gathered yesterday that Tijani’s remains were  conveyed to his village in Kogi State for burial.

With the tension surronding the project concerning payment of compensation, the governor summoned a meeting.

At the meeting, which was also attended by officials of the Ministry of Works and Transportation, Fayose appealled to land owners and farmers and promised to compensate them.

The governor said his administration had resolved to suspend work until December to allow for the payment of compensation.

He noted that the suspension would also allow plantation owners and farmers to harvest their crops.

Fayose said: “Ekiti is my own priority and the innocent will not suffer under me.

“There is no desperation because of the airport. I will not say you should suffer. In the meeting we chose enumerators to go to your land.

“The law gives me power to acquire land in the overall in the overall interest of the state. I love you more than you imagine, this project is your project and I have set aside compensation for you.

“I feel your pains but the government has to move ahead. This project will stay down till December to allow enumerators to do their work and for you to harvest your crops.”

Speaking with reporters before the meeting, one of the plantation owners, Julius Fabiyi, described Hakeem’s death as unfortunate, noting that the deceased could not bear the shock of the loss of his farm.

He said Hakeem was survived by a wife and six children, saying the community of Aso Ayegunle and its environs had been mourning.

Fabiyi said he had developed hypertension since the airport project started.

A cocoa farmer, Julius Oso, said they were shocked that bulldozers could be mobilised to the site without notice and compensation

Oso said the leader of the Iwajo Family, Chief Italohun Fadahunsi, was also suffering from hypertension.

He said further: “We were not given any notice, they started bulldozing the land and this was very shocking.

“We are talking about cocoa plantation that extended to Afao, Igbogun, Igemo, Iwajo and Ijan.

“I don’t know the value the airport will bring to us; this project will displace a lot of people and deny them access to their means of livelihood.

“These cocoa plantations are our means of livelihood and we should not be thrown out of jobs.

“This land belongs to the Iwajo Family and we have been on this land since time immemorial.”

Commissioner for Works and Transportation Kayode Oso said the government would follow due process and ensure payment of compensation to land owners.

Encomiums came the way of Reverend Kunle Salami, the Senior Pastor of Chapel of His Glory with headquarters in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital as he launched three books.

The three books he unveiled were How to Become Wiser, Effective Leadership and How to Manifest Greatness.

Reverend Salami, former chairman of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), had written 10 books before the launch of the three current ones.

Governor Ayo Fayose described Salami as a “man of integrity, humility and a mentor in all ramifications.”

The governor, who was represented by the Government House Chaplain who also doubles as Special Adviser on Religious Matters to the Governor, Pastor Seyi Olusola, also described Salami as “an exceptional minister of the New Testament.”

“Reverend Salami is always available anytime we need his assistance and we pray to God to continue to strengthen him, empower him, energise him, influence him and organise him,” he said.

Other dignitaries who attended the book launch were the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe represented by the Odole of Ado-Ekiti, Chief Bayo Ogunmodimu; wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Janet Olusola; Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade; General Secretary of the state chapter of the PFN, Reverend Tunde Afe and other Christian ministers.

Oba Adejugbe described Reverend Salami as a man of substance whose impact has been felt within and outside Ekiti State.

The guest minister, Reverend Sunday Akingbelure, told the congregation that he had known the author since 1982 when they met at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife.

He described the author as a diligent man of God who has served in the Lord’s vineyard with enthusiasm. He urged the younger generation to look up to him as a role model.

Akingbelure urged the congregation to avail themselves of the opportunity the books offered to develop themselves spiritually and help their destiny to fulfil God’s plan in their lives.

The book reviewer, Prof. Bayo Oloyede, who is the Senior Pastor of the Restoration Prayer Ministries, gave glory to God for what he has done in the life and ministry of Reverend Salami.

He narrated how he also came in contact with the author at OAU, Ile-Ife, describing him (Salami) as a “dynamic teacher who is passionate about the Word of God and dedicated to building lives”.

Oloyede said Salami excelled in various leadership positions he occupied, including the chairmanship of PFN.

“Dr. Salami is a team leader, and, under his teaching and prophetic pronouncements, he has imparted greatness to his generation. He is a helper, encourager, a lifter and an apostle of our time.

“He is worth listening to and his books are worth reading. This presentation is worth celebrating,” Oloyede stated.

The first book, How to Become Wiser has 133 pages and 14 chapters while the second book, Effective Leadership comprises 161 pages divided into 26 chapters. The last one, How to Manifest Greatness has 141 pages and has 12 chapters.

Salami said he was inspired to write the books because of demand from places he had been privileged to minister at home and abroad.

He said he had been involved in leadership training since 1994, saying there was need to document the ministrations so that posterity would have opportunity of being blessed by them.

The ex-PFN boss said he got the draft of his first book when he was the Bible Study Secretary of Evangelical Christian Union in Ado-Ekiti and didn’t publish it until 10 years after.

  • Don’t play politics with monarchs’ selection, Fayose urges kingmakers

Don’t play politics with monarchs’ selection, Fayose urges kingmakers

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayo Fayose, has warned kingmakers in the state against playing politics with the selection of traditional rulers in their communities.

According to the governor, the traditional institution is too sacred to toy with as the consequences of doing such could be unpleasant.

Speaking in Ikere Ekiti on Saturday during the coronation of the Ogoga of Ikere, Oba Adejimi Adu Alagbado, the governor condemned attempts by regents to manipulate the selection of an Oba to favour some unnamed individuals.

Noting that the position of a regent is a stop-gap before the selection of a substantive monarch, the governor further warned, “Under my watch, I won’t allow any kingmaker to play politics with the selection of any monarch. When I assumed office, there were about 12 vacant stools and to the glory of God, we have peacefully resolved and installed six monarchs.

“The role of regent is temporary; kingmakers should not be playing politics with the selection of Obas. Within the last six months, we have installed six Obas. Any civil servant that meddles in the affairs of selecting an Oba will be dealt with. A kingmaker must have the courage to openly line up behind his choice.”

While affirming that the choice of the new Ogoga enjoyed overwhelming support, Fayose pledged that his administration would give the town the attention it deserves.

He promised that within the next two weeks, the dualisation of Ado-Ikere Road would be extended to Ikere township.

A prominent indigene of Ikere and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), commended the governor for his unwavering commitment for truth and transparency in the selection of the new Ogoga.

  • No Independence Day celebration in Ekiti, Ondo

No Independence Day celebration in Ekiti, Ondo

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday cancelled fanfare as well as stadium parades usually held on Independence Day.

Fayose, in a broadcast, said there was nothing to celebrate in view of the nation’s economic situation.

“I do not think it is proper to engage in jamboree when it is becoming increasingly difficult to pay workers.

“The current situation demands sober reflection from all and we cannot pretend again,” Fayose said.

He ordered residents to stay at home and enjoy the celebration low-key.

The usual activities associated with the celebration were absent in most parts of Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, yesterday.

However, there were few places where activities were organised by individuals or corporate bodies.

In Ondo State, the situation was pretty much the same. The usual activities that normally characterise the Independence Day celebration were absent.

When The Nation visited the usual celebration venue, the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Arcade ground, it was empty.

The situation may not be unconnected with the industrial unrest between the government and its workforce.

Workers on Wednesday began a two-day warning strike, following the “non-payment” of their three-month salaries.

A political analyst, Bayo Akinwole, said the government’s failure to mark the Independence was a sign that its treasury was empty.

He lamented that though the government has received the bailout fund, workers were still being owed.

  • APC sues Fayose over SIEC composition

APC sues Fayose over SIEC composition

A pall of doubt has been cast on the local government election scheduled for December 19 in Ekiti State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has gone to court to challenge the composition of the state electoral agency.

The party in a suit filed before an Ado-Ekiti High Court claimed that members of the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) are also members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), friends and business associates of Governor Ayo Fayose.

The APC said constituting a SIEC made up of suspected PDP chieftains was illegal.

In the suit filed by its counsel, Abiodun Fasakin and Tajudeen Akingbolu, the party said the composition of the electoral body contradicted the constitutional requirement for a non-partisan electoral body that could organise credible elections acceptable to all contesting parties.

The APC alleged that SIEC Chairman, Justice  Kayode Bamisile (rtd) and commission members-Victoria Olufunke Adeyera, Ganiyu Bello, Mojisola Florence Bankole, Rufus Sunday Olaiya and  Olajide Vincent Adeyeye-are PDP members.

Other defendants include the attorney general and commissioner for Justice and the House of Assembly.

In the originating summons the defendants are to appear before the court within seven days after service of the summons on them.
