Verdict has affirmed my victory, says Fayose

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has welcomed the judgment of the Election Petition Tribunal saying the verdict has demonstrated that the election which brought him to office was the freest in the political history of Nigeria.

Fayose who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, Fayose in a statement said the verdict has proved that Judiciary is the last hope of the common man.

He said the All Progressives Congress (APC) action of challenging the result of the June 21 governorship election was a character of bad loser whose stock in trade is fabricating lies purposely to deceive gullible minds.

Fayose said, “ The tribunal verdict has demonstrated that the Ekiti people freely gave their mandate to Ayo Fayose and that the June 21 governorship election was the freest in the political history of this country.

“We have said abinitio that going to court by the APC was trying God and that is the character of a bad loser whose stock in  trade is fabricating lies purposely to deceive the gullible minds.

Beside that, we have said repeatedly that the impeachment of October   2006, is a ruse organised by the cabal of that time to subvert the popular will of the people.

“Ekiti people who came out enmass to   vote for Fayose are not fools.

“Though the  truth will  suffer persecution , oppression, suppression, annihilation and humiliation, but it will certainly come out victorious.

“We however thank the  people of Ekiti State who were never deceived by the voodoo of impeachment by voting for Fayose overwhelmingly to return the peoples candidate to power.

“We thank the judiciary for standing by the truth. T he judiciary certainly has reiterated its stand as the last hope of common man.

“We again thank Ekiti people, leaders of our great party and also assure the people of Ekiti State a responsive and responsible government”.

But the Ekiti State Chapter of the APC has declared its intention to appeal the judgment maintaining that the allegation of perjury against Fayose had been raised before the election was conducted.

In a statement by the  Publicity Secretary of Ekiti APC, Taiwo Olatubosun, the party said it was dissatisfied with the judgment which dismissed the petition that the grounds of the petition were pre-election matters.

“Even though the tribunal did not say that all the issues raised against Fayose were  not true, dismissing the entire case on the basis of pre-election matter tag will not be  challenged at the Appeal Court,” Olatubosun said.

The APC spokesman noted that before the election, an allegation of perjury was raised against the People’s Democratic Party’s candidate, who stormed the court to disrupt proceedings of the trial of the case after the trial judge, Mr. Justice Segun Ogunyemi, judges, lawyers and other court officials were beaten and court records in the office of the Chief Judge were torn.

Expressing worry over the triumph of impunity in the polity by desperate politicians, the party called on the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) to save  Nigerian Constitution by preserving the integrity of the judiciary.

His words: “It is worrisome that the judiciary appears not ready to tackle the flagrant abuse of the courts by desperate politicians. An allegation of perjury was raised against Fayose before the election.

“On the day a judgment was expected on the matter, Fayose stormed the court with his thugs to beat the judges, lawyers and other court officials. This forced indefinite suspension of the case and so the case could not be determined before the election.

“The only competent court that can adjudicate on the matter after this sad episode in Nigeria’s judicial system is the election tribunal, but now the tribunal is saying that Fayose should have been stopped from contesting the election.

  • Bullet points for Tompolo, DSS, Fayose, Patience

Bullet points for Tompolo, DSS, Fayose, Patience

Tompolo and the Boys Company (BC) I am tempted to start by saying Tompolo, I dey laugh o! The story of a certain fellow by the queer name of Government Ekpemuopolo Tompolo always evokes hearty laughter in me each time I read it. It always reminds me of the Boys Company of the Biafran Army. Yours truly was not eligible, being not old enough, but I heard stories of the exploits of the BC from bigger boys of the day.

To cut the story short, young lads of the BC were supposed to be spies ferreting information from enemy camps. But most of them, they did not realise that war was death; many of them thought it was some form of a game and they got wasted in their numbers.

When a Norwegian newspaper reported that Tompolo, a pardoned and rehabilitated Niger Delta militant, had acquired six guided missile boats (GMBs) I laughed like crazy, I laughed so hard tears welled up in my eyes. I laughed hard as so many thoughts streamed across my mind. The thought of some rickety, disused ferries (as pictures show) that were refitted with some AK47s and sold to ‘stupid Nigerians’ by oyinbos at outrageous prices; I thought of ‘General’ Tompolo, Commander of the  Republic of Niger Delta Armed Forces; I thought of Nigeria’s strategic national resources in the hands of an ill-lettered little man, I thought of a castrated Nigerian Navy taking orders from Tompolo; the thought of (and pity for) Itsekiri people who know that they can be annihilated if not exterminated in just one drunken night. I thought of and felt pity for NIMASA people who are biting their tongues trying to defend an institutionalised madness not knowing that only NIMASA still keeps silly secrets, the world now being an open door.

I laughed some more and sympathised with both the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and the Tompolo Ekpemuokpolo Government (TEG) knowing that as we say in my place, mgbe osuru, mgbe asi chi si tama, it may not be a matter of six rusty gunboats (that the up thrust of a submarine would wash to the shore) but 60 or even 6000, or more. So join me in laughing dear reader.

Dilemma of the gallant DSS Give it to the Department of State Service (DSS), they are not like the Gallant Mopol as we all know; no, far from such coarseness. They are our elite force trained in the art of the clandestine and unseen. Since they bear no known means of identification, you can jolly well say they are licensed to spook.

But the DSS may have spoofed this time when they paraded some spindly fellows they claim were fake commanders of the Boko Haram who staged a fake ceasefire negotiation with the Federal Government. The seven suspects were apparently working in cahoots with one Stephen Davis, an Australian self-style negotiator. Now why would our DSS so triumphantly and even gallantly deign to have made a breakthrough by parading this hapless conmen who had beaten them silly by exposing their inefficiency in the first place. And so many questions arise: what manner of intelligence and dossier does the DSS have on Boko Haram and the terrorism war in Africa generally? Is it not numbingly embarrassing that the Federal Government could be so easily deceived and embarrassed by these little fellows? How many millions of dollars were paid to them? Where is the money?

Going by the narrative of DSS spokesman Marilyn Ogar, these fake  characters operated for many months between Abuja and Maiduguri, held numerous meetings in public places yet they were not preempted until they thoroughly embarrassed us. Who on earth is Stephen Davis? Can Stephen Osuji surface in Australia tomorrow and pretend to be an expert in anything and the Australian secret service would not run riot over him? Could it be that our DSS did not check out Stephen Davis because he is wearing miserable white skin?

Sorry, DSS’ ‘success’ in catching these fake negotiators merely signposts this column’s assertion that Boko Haram is as much a failure of leadership as it is a failure of intelligence. Are we gonna parade the unit that failed in this duty?

Emperor Fayose in wonderland I admit there are one or two other cases in the land that bear a semblance of what is brewing in Ekiti State now but let us give Governor Ayo Fayose the trophy for putting a comical edge this macabre drama. In Rivers and Edo States, there are  stand-offs resulting from executive-legislature power tussle, we acknowledge.

But in Ekiti state, it is sardonic enough that Fayose chased majority of the State’s legislators out of town leaving only seven renegades but he has carried on as if he were a 16th century divine monarch.

He did not only get the seven popinjays to sit and conduct the business of the House, he co-opted scallywags and miscreants to make up the number, sitting on the hallowed seats of honorable members and desecrating the legislature.

The first time these seven renegades plus 19 thugs ‘approved’ the Ekiti State’s commissioners’ list (i.e the executive council) we thought it was a momentary lapse of memory. Last Monday the charade was reenacted now on a grand scale. The ‘mock’ assembly sat again in Ado Ekiti to pass the State’s Appropriation Bill.

According to the report, again the seven ‘law-mockers’ were seated and all the fleeing lawmakers’ seats were occupied as visitors were allowed to seat in the chambers. Some traditional rulers where present; there was a full complement of soldiers, police, Department of State Service (DSS), Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). The press were barred save for the Governor’s Office and House of Assembly Press Corps. No broadcast journalists were allowed to record the evil gathering on video.

In the manner of emperors, Governor Fayose was reported to have reassured the renegade speaker that, “You, (Dele Olugbemi) are the Speaker of this Assembly and nobody can remove you from this position. I want to emphasise that this speaker would remain in office till June.” You must pinch yourself to find out if you are in 1614 or 2014 for I have just done that.

Empathizing with Mama Peace in a time of ‘war’ What do you do with a well-known certified peacemaker in time of intense, internecine ‘warfare’? Well, that is a very tough question and this is the dilemma of our First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan aka, Mama Peace of Africa.

Last weekend, Dame Patience was in her homeland, Okrika; she gathered the chieftains and owners of the land and declared to them in her oft unmatched candour: “Before you today is the next governor of Rivers State. He is the former Minister of State for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike.”

Those who have eyes have seen Dame Patience’ gloved hands in many states in the run up to the PDP primaries across the land. Mama is PDP’s field marshalling leading the political ‘army’ into the next election. She is the chief endorser, enforcer and even fixer.

Those who know can tell that of all the battle fronts, Rivers State would test Mama’s mettle the most. Up against Governor Chibuike Amaechi of the State, no prisoners would be allowed and the winner will take all. Dear reader, you would do well to keep very far away from that vicinity so that you do not get be-splattered… ka Chineke mezie okwu. Amim.

    The Buhari epiphany

Dear reader, you would recall that this column vowed sometime ago never to vote for General Muhammadu Buhari (retd). It must have been sometime in 2012 when he issued some mumbo-jumbo about the blood of baboons and monkeys flowing and all that. Coming when the post-election fires of 2011 were yet to be cold, one could not understand an elder statesman speaking in such manner.

But since then, the general has continued to change his approach and project a national outlook to his politics. In view of the dire situation of our dear country today, this column will revisit that vow. Having won the presidential flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC), this must be Buhari’s epiphany. Or shall we say Nigeria’s epiphany?

As the campaign days go by, this column will attempt some disquisitions on the Buhari factor at this juncture of Nigerian politics. It is Buhari’s be all and end all moment, his make or mar juncture; his epiphany. And mark you, he will have to work his lean butts off for it. An epic battle it will be against the incumbent, President Goodluck Jonathan.

  • Tribunal delivers judgment on Ekiti governorship poll Friday

The Justice Siraju Mohammed-led tribunal has fixed Friday for judgment in the petition filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) against the outcome of the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Justice Mohammed, who is the tribunal chairman, on Wednesday, chose December 19 for judgment after lawyers, representing parties to the petition, adopted their final written addresses.

Respondents to the petition are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Fayose, the Independent National Electoral Commission) , the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police.

Before adopting his final address, the petitioner’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), reminded the tribunal that, as against the impression created by the defendants, the petition was predicated on the fact that Fayose was not qualified to contest the election.

He urged the court to allow the petition and dismiss the responses by the five respondents.

Lawyers to the respondents, including Yusuf Ali (SAN), Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), Abayomi Sadiku and Abdulkadir Ajana argued that the petitioner had failed to prove its case.

They also argued that the petitioner was unable to provide cogent evidence to support its petition. They urged the tribunal dismiss the petition.

The APC, in the petition, urged the tribunal to “unravel the hidden facts surrounding the election,” contending that the election was more of “a mechanical exercise than conventional casting of votes.”

    •19 APC Assemblymen  protest ‘illegality’

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose presented yesterday the appropriation bill for the 2015 fiscal year to seven Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers in the House of Assembly.

Fayose said “nobody can remove factional speaker Dele Olugbemi from office”.

The 19 All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers were absent at the brief ceremony, which was witnessed by senior government officials and a handful of traditional rulers.

All the lawmakers’ chairs were occupied as visitors were allowed to sit in the chambers.

There was massive security build-up around the Assembly complex, with soldiers, policemen, operatives of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) standing a guard.

Only  the press crew of the Governor’s Office and the press unit of the House of Assembly were allowed to cover the proceedings.

Journalists from the electronic media were not allowed to record the proceedings. They interviewed the governor as he was heading towards his car parked in front of the main door of the complex.

The N80.774 billion budget was tagged: “Budget of Reality”. According to the budget estimate, N48.7 billion was earmarked for recurrent expenditure and capital expenditure N31.9 billion.

Contrary to his earlier position not to borrow, the governor said the state would access N5 billion internal loans to meet up with some commitments.

Fayose affirmed his support for Olugbemi’s “leadership” of the Assembly, maintaining that the “factional speaker” would remain in office till June.

“You (Olugbemi) are the speaker of this Assembly. I repeat, you are the speaker of this Assembly and nobody can remove you from this position. I want to emphasise that this speaker will remain there till June. Any attempt to overrun this state will be resisted by our people.”

The governor said the size of the bill was informed by his administration’s desire to live within its means and go with an achievable estimate rather than “decorate the budget with unrealistic figures”.

He said the budget would be funded by revenue from the Federation Account, Internally Generated Revenue and other sources.

During an interview with reporters after the presentation, Fayose justified the proposed loan from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), describing the situation as a “different scenario”.

“This is a different scenario. Taking loans from CBN is for all states and it is for the less privileged and market women who cannot access loans in banks.

“There is a repayment process. The government must stand as guarantor. And the fact that I said we would not borrow should not be misinterpreted. If you borrow you must pay within your tenure so that you do not involve in financial recklessness for people coming after you.”

Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Monday presented the appropriation bill for the 2015 fiscal year to seven lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) inside the hallowed chamber of the state’s House of Assembly.

Fayose, who made the presentation to the PDP caucus led by factional Speaker Dele Olugbemi also declared that “nobody can remove Olugbemi from office.”
The governor also vowed that any attempt to overrun the state will be resisted.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) legislators were absent from the budget presentation ceremony which was witnessed by senior government officials and a handful of traditional rulers.

All the legislators’ chairs were occupied as members of the public were allowed to sit in the hallowed chamber.

There was massive security build-up around the Assembly complex with soldiers, riot policemen, operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) standing guard within the premises of the legislative chambers.

Only the cameras of the Press Crew of the Governor’s Office and the Press Unit of the House of Assembly were allowed to cover the proceedings.

Journalists from the electronic media were not allowed to record the proceedings with their cameras as they only interviewed the governor on the budget presentation when he was heading towards his car parked in front of the complex main door.

The size of the budget presented by Fayose was N80.774 billion and it was tagged “Budget of Reality.”

According to the budget estimate, N48.7 billion was earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while capital expenditure will gulp N31.9 billion

Contrary to his earlier position that he would not borrow to run his administration, Fayose said would access N5 billion internal loans to meet up with some commitments.

Fayose used the occasion to affirm his support for Olugbemi’s leadership” of the Assembly, maintaining that the “factional Speaker” would remain in office till June next year.

His words: “You (Olugbemi) are the Speaker of this Assembly, I repeat, you are the Speaker of this Assembly and nobody can remove you from this position. I want to emphasize that this Speaker will remain there till June.

“If they (APC lawmakers) like, they should be meeting and sitting in the Houses of Assembly in other states. Any attempt to overrun this state will be resisted by our people.”

  • Governor decries decay

    Governor decries decay

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose has deplored the infrastructural decay in his hometown of Afao-Ekiti in Irepodun/Ifelodun Local Government Area, promising to provide social amenities to the community.

He decried the activities of tipper owners and drivers engaged in illegal procurement of sand in and around the town, threatening to arrest them for destroying the major road linking the community with Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The governor spoke at the Afao Day celebration, which featured a N250 million fundraising for developmental projects in the community.

“It is shameful for the bush to overgrow the poultry farm in my community when we have able-bodied youths who can clear the bush. If I come again and it remains the same, I will not come to Afao again in the next six months,” the governor said.

He pledged to give the community a modern palace and expressed his readiness to demolish a building in front of the palace.

Fayose promised to compensate the owners of the building, saying “it is not appropriate to build a house to block the palace”.

  • Impeached Ekiti Speaker, others sue Fayose, Abba, DSS

The Ekiti State House of Assembly Speaker, Adewale Omirin and 18 other members of the House have sued Governor Ayo Fayose at the Federal High Court in Lagos for preventing them from performing their lawmaking duties.

They also joined the Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, the Department of State Security Services (DSS), and the purported “Speaker,” Dele Olugbemi.

Olugbemi was “elected” by seven Peoples Democratic Party members of the House after claiming to have “impeached” Omirin.

Also joined as defendants are members loyal to Olugbemi, namely Samuel Ajibola, Adeojo Alexander, Adeloye Adeyinka, Isreal Ajiboye, Fatunbi Olajide, Olayinka Abeni and the Commissioner of Police in Ekiti.

Three commissioners purportedly cleared by the House under Olugbemi, namely Oweseni Ajayi (Attorney-General), Kayode Eso (Commissioner for Works) and Toyin Ojo (Commissioner for Finance) were also joined as defendants.

The plaintiffs, in their originating summons, are praying the court to declare as unconstitutional and illegal the “election” of Olugbemi as “Speaker,” among others.

Justice Saliu Saidu on Wednesday granted the plaintiffs leave to issue and serve the Originating Summons and all other processes on Olugbemi, Fayose, Abba and Ojo outside the court’s jurisdiction and by substituted means, such as through advertisements.

The judge made the order following an ex-parte application moved by the plaintiffs’ counsel, Mr. Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), led by Mr. Norrison Quakers (SAN).

In a supporting affidavit Omirin, who was elected as Speaker on June 6, 2011, said a team of fully armed policemen positioned at the House of Assembly premises on November 17, prevented him from gaining access to his office.

“I proceeded to my office as usual but was denied entry by the commanding officer who stated that he had me listed as an All Progressives Congress (APC) member on a list he was holding and was instructed not to grant me entrance into the premises of the House of Assembly that day,” he said.

  • Fayose’s candidates win PDP primaries in Ekiti

Fayose’s candidates win PDP primaries in Ekiti

Aspirants believed to have been anointed by Governor Ayo Fayose have won the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) House of Representatives and senatorial primaries in Ekiti State.

At the Ekiti North Senatorial primary election in Ido-Ekiti, former House of Representatives member Mr. Duro Faseyi defeated Senator Otunba Ayo Arise to win the ticket.

Faseyi, who represented Ekiti North 2 Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber between 2003 and 2011, is an ally of Fayose.

Former Deputy Governor Mrs. Abiodun Olujimi won the Ekiti South  Senatorial ticket conducted in Ikere-Ekiti, beating the former senator who represented the zone between 2007 and 2011, Chief Sola Akinyede, to the ticket.

Olujimi,  a board member of the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), was deputy governor to Fayose between October 2005 and October 2006.

Another former House of Representatives member Mrs. Fatimat Raji-Rasaki beat former Senator Bode Ola and former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Mr. Obafemi Adewale, to win the PDP senatorial ticket for Ekiti Central Senatorial District at the election in Ado-Ekiti.

The result did not go down well with delegates from Ijero axis of the senatorial district, who were pushing for Adewale’s candidacy since the area has not produced a senator since 1999, unlike Efon, Ado-Ekiti/Irepodun/Ifelodun and Ekiti West, that had done that in the past.

All the three senatorial candidates of the PDP are allies of Fayose

This is the first time in the history of the state that a party would produce two female senatorial candidates.

In the House of Representatives primaries, aspirants enjoying the backing of Fayose swept to victory.

Those who won include three former council chairmen who served during Fayose’s first tenure in office.

They are former Chairman of Ido/Osi Local Government, Chief Thaddeus Aina; who clinched the PDP ticket for Ekiti North 2 Federal Constituency; and former Chairman of Ikole Local Government, Mr. Kehinde Agboola; who was declared winner of the ticket for Ekiti North 1 Federal Constituency.

Former Chairman of Gbonyin Local Government, Mr. Akin Awodumila, was returned winner of Ekiti South 2 Federal Constituency while Mr. Segun Adekola won in Ekiti South 1.

The result from Ekiti Central 1 returned Mr. Ayodeji Oladimeji as winner while to the PDP ticket for Ekiti Central 2 was won by Mr. Olamide Oni.

  • ‘Leave Fayose alone’

    ‘Leave Fayose alone’

The Ekiti State Coordinator of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P), Chief Femi Akinyemi, has advised opposition politicians to stop distracting Governor Ayo Fayose.

Akinyemi, who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to cooperate with Fayose to develop the state.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain’s comments followed an allegation by the APC that four of the inmates who escaped from Ado-Ekiti prisons were being kept in the Government House.

Akinyemi, a former Speaker of the House of Assembly in the old Ondo State, described the allegation as “comical, laughable, baseless, illogical and untrue”.

He said Fayose, who condemned the attack, could not be harbouring fleeing inmates in the Government House.

  • Fayose’s allegations against Fayemi untrue, says APC

Fayose’s allegations against Fayemi untrue, says APC

The Ekiti State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed allegations by Governor Ayo Fayose against his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Fayose, during his maiden media chat, “Meet Your Governor” aired last Friday on major radio and television stations in the state, accused Fayemi of running the state aground and owing workers two months salary arrears.

The governor also accused Fayemi of taking away the governor’s official vehicle claiming that he mounted pressure on the former governor before the Range Rover Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) was returned.

But the party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, accused Fayose of feeding the people of the state with lies in a bid to win “undeserved public sympathy”.

Olatunbosun maintained that Fayemi did not receive September allocation before leaving office in October. He wondered why Fayose “who collected September allocation refused to pay workers their September salary”.

He said: “Fayose said in the programme that he has not collected any money since his assumption of office. This is a lie. The workers deserve their pay. Fayose cannot claim he has no money after collecting N22 billion since he assumed office.

“The truth is that the N43million Range Rover that Fayose bought immediately he became governor-elect and passed the bill to Fayemi to pay is even costlier and more sophisticated than the one Fayemi used and we wonder how a man who enjoys this luxury would say he does not have official car.

“The governor also said he had shunned the new Government House because he cannot be living in opulence with regular power supply while the rest of Ekiti people live in the dark.

“Can the governor swear by the Holy Bible, real Holy Bible and not a dictionary wrapped with Holy Bible cover, that he is not living in the new Government House as we speak?

“Where did he host a foremost traditional ruler from Ekiti Central Senatorial zone last Sunday night? Why is it that the house is always lit at night if no one lives there?

“Why does the governor always feel that Ekiti people are fools?? Why does the leader of a people believe that lying is a way of life and instrument of governance?”

“Ekiti people should know that their money is being spent on a private hotel owned by the governor.

“He is living in the Government House as well as spending Ekiti people’s money to bring his hotel to a high standard to improve his personal business.

“This is a callous attitude to the people he claims to love? and prepares to make sacrifices in their service for development.”
