Anti-venom available to tackle snakebite – FCTA

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has assured residents that anti-venom is fully stocked and readily accessible across all FCTA-owned hospitals and public health centres.

This assurance is coming few days after the death of singer and social media influencer, Ifunanya Lucy Nwangene, which triggered widespread anger and allegations of medical negligence.

The Mandate Secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, in a statement asked residents not panic, as the territory maintains adequate supplies of both polyvalent and multivalent antivenoms kept under strict quality control.

Fasawe said: “Different forms and types of anti-snake venom are widely available across FCTA-owned hospitals and public health facilities.

“Stocking decisions are guided by collaboration with veterinary doctors, who help identify the most common snake species (venom strains) in the FCT.

“Accordingly, polyvalent and multivalent antivenoms are maintained, centrally stored in FCTA owned Abuja Central Medical Stores, and directly managed by the Secretariat to ensure quality, cold-chain integrity, and availability”.

The Mandate Secretary’s assurance follows public outrage over the death of the young influencer, Ifunanya Nwangene, who was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi with many alleging that the facility had no antivenom to administer when she arrived for treatment.

However FMC Jabi, in its official explanation, dismissed the claims as unfounded, insisting the late Ifunanya was brought in long after the bite and was already exhibiting advanced neurotoxic symptoms.

According to the hospital, she presented with respiratory distress and neurological deterioration, conditions that significantly reduce the likelihood of survival even where antivenom is available.

The facility said its medical team initiated emergency protocols but the severity of her condition left little room for recovery.

Fasawe, while condoling with the family, said the death must serve as a turning point for emergency preparedness and public awareness.

She said: “The loss of a promising young life is deeply painful and distressing. I share in the family’s grief and reaffirm that such medically preventable deaths must be taken seriously, with strengthened measures to prevent recurrence”.

She described snakebites as a preventable public health emergency, warning that venomous species including cobras, vipers and puff adders, are present across the FCT’s expanding urban and peri-urban areas.

“Snakebites remain a largely preventable public health emergency. Snakes inhabit rainforests, grasslands, farms, and semi-arid areas, and often hide near human dwellings in search of food or shelter—leading to increased human-snake encounters.

“In Nigeria, highly venomous species such as cobras, vipers, and puff adders are present. As a rule, all snakebites must be treated as venomous until proven otherwise”, she added.

She also issued a step-by-step advisory on what residents must do immediately after a bite.

“All FCT residents are urged to adopt primary prevention measures, including wearing protective clothing when in farms or tall grass, avoiding dark areas or using flashlights at night, clearing debris around homes, sealing entry points, and never handling snakes.

“In the event of a bite, immediate first aid includes staying calm, immobilising the affected limb below heart level, removing constrictive items, gently cleaning the wound, and proceeding immediately to a hospital with antivenom,” Fasawe added.

While advising that harmful practices such as cutting or sucking the wound, applying tourniquets, ice, or herbal remedies must be avoided, the Mandate Secretary stressed that timely presentation remains the single most critical factor for survival.

Ex-FCTA director backs Gov Kefas’ alignment with APC

A retired director with the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Mukhtar Galadima, has described the alignment of Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a move that will bring more projects and dividends of democracy to the state.

Galadima made the statement while speaking with journalists, where he described Governor Kefas as a smart and dynamic leader who is focused on innovation and development for the people of Taraba State.

According to him, the governor’s decision to work closely with the federal government demonstrates that he has the interest of the people at heart and is determined to attract more development to the state.

The former director, who is aspiring to represent Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said his decision to contest was informed by the lack of participatory democracy in the constituency.

He noted that elected representatives must carry the people along in governance.

Galadima lamented that while other states are benefiting from constituency projects, Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency has been largely left out.

He further noted that the people are currently facing hardship despite the area being richly blessed with agricultural potential.

Galadima expressed confidence that if elected, Wukari/Ibi Federal Constituency would witness a new dawn.

In order to restore administrative order across the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) bureaucracy, the Acting Head of the Civil Service of the FCT, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, has directed all Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Departments to immediately implement and maintain staff attendance registers.

The directive, issued in a circular dated Tuesday, January 27, followed a landmark ruling by Justice E. D. Subilim of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, which ordered that the ongoing strike by the Joint Union Action Committee JUAC be suspended forthwith.

In her communication to the Secretaries of Mandate Secretariats, Coordinators of major councils, and Permanent Secretaries, Nathan further clarified that the call for immediate resumption is coupled with a continued commitment from the FCTA Management to prioritize the welfare of its staff.

She instructed all senior officials to ensure the contents of the directive are brought to the attention of all concerned personnel to guarantee total and immediate compliance with the judicial mandate.

President of the Joint Union Action Committee, FCTA, Mrs. Rifkatu Iortyer, has appealed to Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) workers to be law-abiding and comply with the interlocutory injunction issued on Tuesday, which restrains them from continuing the strike that began last Monday.

Speaking to staff following the court order, Iortyer called for calm and peaceful conduct to prevent any casualties, urging workers to respect the law.

She stated, “Nobody should say anything for now. We will show them that we are law-abiding. We will hold a meeting and consult with the NLC and TUC because nobody here belongs to a union that is not registered.”

“I don’t want us to record any casualty. There are always different ways of addressing issues. We didn’t want it this way, but they have brought us this way to oppress us and to suppress us.

“But I want us to know that we are barracks. Soldier come, soldier go. Please tell our teaming members this is my plea. I don’t want casualty. But I want to announce to us that as of this morning…..I think it was Thursday or Wednesday last week that they were able to pay our one-month pension to our pension houses.

“They paid ₦1 billion, 131 million, and some fractions for June. And they have paid it in the same manner again. All of them are above ₦1:1 billion for every month. And you can imagine all this money was there.”

…says he is open to dialogue

…I was not chased out of office – minister

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday addressed the strike by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), urging them to return to work or face legal consequences following a National Industrial Court ruling that ended the industrial action.

Briefing reporters shortly after the court’s decision, Wike stressed that the rule of law must prevail and accused political actors of exploiting the strike for agendas unrelated to workers’ welfare.

He stated that the FCTA approached the court after determining that the strike had been “hijacked by politicians,” despite the administration’s ongoing efforts to resolve the dispute through dialogue and fulfill a substantial portion of workers’ demands.

The minister added that mediation efforts were already in progress before the industrial action escalated, underscoring the administration’s commitment to addressing the concerns of its staff.

“The administration was already in the process of mediation when some politicians hijacked the strike,” Wike said, adding that several of the demands presented by workers were “frivolous” and either unreasonable or already addressed.

He said, “We believed in dialogue and engagement. We felt the issues could be resolved through discussion. But when it became clear that politicians were about to hijack the strike, we had no choice but to seek legal intervention. We decided to allow the court to determine, on merit, what the real issues were and whether the demands were justified.

“This is a democracy. Everyone has the right to protest. But strike action should always be the last option. If workers ask for 14 days and the government has already addressed the issues within 10 days, there should be room for understanding and patience.

“Security agencies and the administration engaged with the workers, but it became obvious that there was more to the situation.”

He maintained that the FCTA had made substantial efforts to meet workers’ concerns, including the payment of salaries and the introduction of reforms within the civil service.

Wike disclosed that more than ₦12billion has just been approved for the payment of January salaries to FCTA workers, a move he said demonstrated the administration’s commitment to staff welfare.

The minister also cited improved revenue performance as evidence of reforms under his leadership, stating that the FCT had generated more than ₦30bn in internally generated revenue (IGR), which he described as a significant increase compared with previous years.

Wike urged workers to acknowledge reforms undertaken by the administration, including the establishment of the Civil Service Commission and investments in infrastructure across the territory.

He argued that inefficiencies within the public service had contributed to underdevelopment not only in the FCT but in many states across Nigeria.

“Workers are largely responsible for the lack of development in states, including the FCT,” he said.

The minister also dismissed claims circulating on social media that he had been forced out of his office during protests linked to the strike.

He described the reports as false, saying he had merely stepped out of the office to see President Bola Tinubu off at the Airport.

“I was never chased out of the office,” Wike said.

Adopting a hardline tone, Wike warned against any further disruption of government operations, saying that attempts to lock government premises would attract severe consequences.

“Anyone who dares to lock the gates again will be made a scapegoat, because the law must be obeyed,” he said.

He further alleged that some senior officials within the civil service had played a role in sustaining the strike, claiming that certain directors were among those instigating the action.

However, he said this would not deter the administration from what he described as doing the right thing.

Wike stressed that engagement between workers and the government did not require direct access to him personally, noting that workers’ representatives had been in discussions with management throughout the dispute.

The minister cautioned that workers who failed to comply with the court order and resume duties from Wednesday would face legal action, signaling a tougher enforcement phase as the FCTA moves to restore full public services in the nation’s capital.

Wike said, “No one will stagnate this administration through blackmail or political games. If anyone wants to engage politically, they should do so openly.”

Court restrains Wike, FCTA from revoking Maitama land

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has restrained the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) from proceeding with their alleged plan to enforce the revocation of a disputed land in Maitama district, Abuja.

Justice Bello Kawu, in a ruling, equally barred Wike, the FCTA, and the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) from giving effect to or acting on a revocation notice issued over Park No. 2008, Cadastral Zone A06, Maitama.

The ruling delivered on December 22, 2025, a certified true copy (CTC) of which was seen on Wednesday, was on an ex-parte motion filed by Nanet Hotels Limited, the claimant in a suit marked FCT/HC/M/17103/2025, challenging among others, the propriety of the purported revocation notice.

According to Justice Kawu, the defendants must be restrained “from giving effect to, acting upon, enforcing, implementing or taking any step whatsoever pursuant to the purported revocation contained in the letter dated July 7, 2025 and received on September 24, 2025, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice”.

The judge also restrained the defendants from “ejecting, harassing, intimidating, disturbing, sealing, demolishing, reallocating or otherwise interfering” with the claimant’s possession and occupation of the property.

He directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to refrain from enforcing or acting in furtherance of the disputed revocation or from providing security cover for any eviction or disturbance on the land.

Justice Kawu ordered all parties to maintain the status quo as of the date the application was filed.

Nanet Hotels Limited, through its solicitors, Ojukwu Chikaosolu & Co. has since issued a public notice warning politicians, public officeholders, developers and investors to stay off the disputed land.

In the notice dated January 20, 2026, the firm cautioned “all governors of the federation, all senators, all members of the house of representatives, all ministers, political appointees, developers, investors and the general public” against dealing in any land “situated at, upon, or derived from Park No. 2008, Cadastral Zone A06, Maitama District, Abuja”.

The solicitors said there is a “subsisting and active suit” before the FCT high court and “clear, binding and subsisting interim orders” protecting the land.

“For the avoidance of all doubt, no person, authority, agency or developer whatsoever has any lawful right to allocate, sell, transfer, mortgage, lease, develop or deal in any manner with the said land,” the notice reads.

The firm warned that any person who proceeds to transact on the land “does so entirely at his own risk” and would be deemed to have full notice of the pending litigation and court orders.

FCTA removes 607 beggars, mentally challenged from streets

As part of efforts to clean up the nation’s city, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has evacuated 607 beggars and mentally challenged individuals from Abuja streets, from last July to date.

Head of Enforcement, FCT Social Development Secretariat (SDS), Ukachi Adebayo, made this known in an interview in Abuja.

Adebayo said the Operation Sweep Abuja Clean team carried out the exercise and added that the evacuees had been counselled, profiled, and returned to their states in collaboration with state governments and liaison offices.

“What we do when we apprehend the beggars and mentally challenged individuals is to counsel them to be able to profile them.

“After that, we take them to their various liaison offices to be returned to their respective states where they are expected to undergo rehabilitation,” she said.

Adebayo said the operation was ongoing and would continue to take them off the streets of Abuja.

She said: “The more you take them out; the more they resurface.

“Some of them were driven by insecurity in their state and they ran to Abuja to take refuge but we will continue to apprehend them and take them back.”

Similarly, the Acting Director, Social Welfare, SDS, Gloria Onwuka, said some of the children begging on the streets were brought in from other states by unidentified individuals to beg and hand over the proceeds to them.

Onwuka added that some of the women that were caught with children begging on their behalf were not their biological children.

“Begging is now run like a business. People will go and hire people’s children from other states, put them in vehicles very early in the morning, come to Abuja and start begging.

“The families they are hiring these children from don’t even know that this is what they are using their children to do.

“We have caught so many of them like that,” she said.

Also, Secretary, FCTA Command and Control Centre, Dr Peter Olumuji, explained that Operation Sweep was a joint security operation involving relevant security agencies and FCT’s Secretariats, Departments and Agencies.

Olumuji stated that the operation was instituted by the FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, to sweep Abuja of miscreants, street beggars, scavengers and other criminal elements.

He pointed out that beggars pose security threats and constitute a nuisance in the city, adding that some of them serve as informants to criminals.

“Not only that, the beggars and mentally challenged individuals also deface the beauty of the capital city, while some of them become victims of kidnapping for rituals and other negative purposes,” he said.

He said the operation was ongoing and would continue to crackdown on beggars, miscreants and other criminal elements wherever they resurfaced.

Schools resume in Abuja as FCTA hails massive turnout

Academic activities for the second term of the 2025/2026 session officially commenced across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday.

Visits to some schools in the nation’s capital showed that student and teacher turnout was high.

This was the situation at Government Secondary School (GSS), Junior Secondary School (JSS), both in Apo Resettlement, Government Science Secondary School, Pyakasa Maitama, and JSS Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja.

At GSS Apo Resettlement, out of 1,158 school population, the total number of students on the first day of resumption was 405.

During a routine inspection of schools to monitor compliance, Ms. Joy Okeke, Permanent Secretary of the FCTA Education Secretariat, praised the “massive” turnout of students and pupils.

Speaking on behalf of Dr. Danlami Hayyo, FCT Mandate Secretary for Education, Okeke attributed the high attendance and readiness to learn to the conducive environment provided by the FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike.

“The turnout is very impressive; it shows that the children are ready to learn,” Okeke stated during a visit to Government Secondary School (GSS) Apo.

She added, “The Honorable Minister has made the school environment conducive. I have advised the students to be attentive and the teachers to remain punctual and committed.”

She reiterated that the FCTA Education Secretariat continues to encourage a collaborative spirit between staff and students to ensure a successful 2026 academic year.

At Government Science Secondary School, Maitama, students expressed enthusiasm about the swift start to the term.

Adishokun Oluwashimilore, an SS3 student, noted that the clean environment was already enhancing their learning experience.

“We have started learning already; we are in a Physics class right now. I am impressed with the teachers’ commitment,” he said.

Similarly, Ogechukwu Victory shared similar sentiments after her first Mathematics lesson of the year.

“The environment is very conducive and full of excitement,” she noted, while urging absent peers to return immediately.

She adds, “When you come early, classes start immediately, and it helps us go further in our studies.”

Also, speaking on managing the logistics of the resumption, Suzie Wamandogo, Vice-Principal Admin of GSS Maitama, revealed that boarding students had returned as early as Sunday, January 4.

Despite the recent New Year festivities, she confirmed that approximately 471 students had already settled in.

“It is not easy, being the first week of the year and following the celebrations, but we are surprised to see so many parents bringing their children back.

“All our teachers returned yesterday to receive the students and are currently in the classrooms, Wamandogo said.

However, it was observed that most of the Private schools visited were almost empty, as they are yet to resume activities for the term.

“The school has resumed, but our students are to come in on the 7th of this month. Because our experience has been that they don’t come to school.

“So that’s why we moved it to 7th instead of any other time. And we have made it mandatory for them to come to school on the 7th.

    • … assure residents of tight security, peace in the nation’s capital

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike has assured Abuja residents that tangible projects will be completed to mark President Bola Tinubu’s third year in office.

Wike said this in his New Year massage.

The minister urged the residents to cooperate and continue to support Tinubu’s administration for more dividends of democracy.

He also assured of level playing ground for all following the forthcoming Area council and general elections.

According to a statement he personally signed on Thursday, the minister said, “Let me begin by acknowledging and appreciating the cooperation of residents and friends of the FCT in the previous year. Great strides were made, massive developments accomplished, and seemingly insurmountable obstacles overcome all thanks to your cooperation.

“As we usher in the dawn of a new year, on behalf of the FCT Administration, I extend my warmest greetings of a Happy New Year to the resilient and vibrant residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

“It is my earnest hope that this year, our Administration will receive more support from residents that will galvanize our plans and projections for the FCT into tangible developments, projects, and facilities that will greatly enhance the quality of life for all residents of the Federal Capital Territory, regardless of their social status.

“As an Administration, we have already laid the groundwork for projects and programs that will trigger positive developments in critical sectors of society, such as education, health, the judiciary, transportation, agriculture, and security. We therefore look forward to commissioning rehabilitated schools, roads, bridges, health facilities, transportation hubs, facilities for the judiciary, security infrastructure, and programmes that will impact FCT residents positively.

“This year, we shall not just be commemorating the third anniversary of the Administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, but plan to mark it by showcasing tangible developments aimed at transforming the lives of residents favourably”.

Wike said through the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, FCT has witnessed unprecedented development across territory; from the Abuja Municipal to far flung areas such as Abaji, Kuje and Kwali.

“We cannot thank Mr. President enough for this, even as we solicit for more support as we embark on more projects for the people.

“As we look forward to a bright and prosperous new year, it is pertinent to remember that virtues of diligence, discipline, and determination are needed for the realization of our collective goals. I therefore encourage residents to imbibe these very important virtues and continue to be law-abiding as we navigate the year together.

“The year 2026 is particularly significant for us because it marks the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Federal Capital Territory. The golden jubilee celebration of the FCT is a testament to the vision of our founding fathers, and to the resilience of Nigerians who have continuously demonstrated the resolve to coexist in peace and unity these past 50 years.

“The new year is also a politically vital one for residents of the Federal Capital, and in fact, all Nigerians. In a few weeks, Area Council elections will kick off in the six Area Councils of the Territory, and eligible voters are expected to exercise their rights to choose their leaders at the local government level. I urge you all to use your votes wisely.

“On our part, the Federal Capital Territory Administration is committed to ensuring that the exercise is done in a free and fair atmosphere devoid of violence and illegalities.

“Later in the year, campaigns are expected to begin nationwide ahead of Nigeria’s general elections in 2027. Being the Centre of Government, the Federal Capital Territory would witness a beehive of activities around this period. Be assured that the FCT Administration will continue to provide an environment conducive for the orderly hosting of all political events preceding and relating to the general elections as well.

“My good people of the FCT, as we move into this amazing year, let us do so with dogged determination, unshaken faith, and the unity of purpose that never fails to deliver the desired peace, prosperity, and progress that the FCT truly craves.

“On this auspicious occasion of the New Year celebration, once again, I wish you and your loved ones a joyful, peaceful, and prosperous 2026.”
