FRSC warns drivers against use of worn-out tyres

The Ogun Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ), Mr Clement Oladele, has warned drivers to desist from using worn-out tyres when driving to save lives and property.

Oladele gave the warning in Ota on Thursday at the 2017 Ember Months Safety Campaign organised by the Sango-Ota Command in collaboration with Shell Nigeria Gas.

The campaign had as its theme: Right to Life on the highway: Not Negotiable.

Represented by Mrs Bridget Asekhuno, Ogun Head of Administration and Human Resources of FRSC, he said the use of exhausted tyres had been a major contributor to road crashes in the country.

The sector commander noted that safety on our highways during the ember months was a collective responsibility of all road users.

‘‘Safety on our roads required our collective responsibilities and we all have one role and the other to play in reducing crashes,’’ he said.

The sector commander implored all road users to be cautious as there would be increase of vehicular movements during the ember months.

Oladele, however, warned drivers to desist from overloading and speeding to ensure safety of passengers to their various destinations.

He advised road users to watch carefully before entering main and minor roads to minimise accidents.

Mr Kunle Oguntoyinbo, Sango-Ota Unit Commander of FRSC, urged drivers to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles before embarking on any journey.

Oguntoyinbo also warned vehicle owners to desist from driving under the influence of alcohol and avoid speeding to stay alive.

‘’The higher the speed the higher will be the crash which will also increase the number of causalities,’’ he said.

The unit commander, however, advised drivers to install speed limiting devices in their vehicles to reduce speeding and crashes.

He also urged drivers to constantly use their seat belts and desist from receiving calls on their cell phones while driving.

  • FRSC sensitises on safe driving

    FRSC sensitises on safe driving

Abia state Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has thanked the management and staff of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for what he described as the thankless job they have been doing for the country.

Ikpeazu said many people in the society do not appreciate the good work the corps is doing in the area of saving lives.

He also urged the people to always show respect to them whenever they see them on the highway.

The governor who was represented by Kingsley Megwara, the chairman of Abia State Passenger Integrated Manifest Scheme (ASPIMSS), said that the scheme has been working in tandem with the FRSC to ensure that the highways and  lives are safe.

He said that the scheme has eight ambulances scattered across the state,.

“We have placed them at strategic places and when there is an accident my people arrive there either before or after Road Safety to ensure that those involved are taken care of”.

Ikpeazu said that he has spoken with the police so that they can find a way to let ASPIMSS respond to distress calls.

“However,” he said, “we are in a dilemma as in most cases when our ambulances arrive at any accident scene our nurses are always attacked for the reason that they arrived late which should not be so.”

The governor used the forum to plead with officers of FRSC who are on the highways to stop the habit of flagging down vehicles that are on high speed, stressing that in such cases most of the vehicles may lose control and thereby cause accident.

He said that government is making plans to enact laws that will stop the sale of alcoholic beverages in motor parks across the state.

“Such beverages which most drivers take before embarking on trips also lead to crashes on the roads”.

In his speech, the sector commander of FRSC in Abia, Linus Ojukwu said that this years’ theme is ‘Right to Life on the Highway not Negotiable’, which is the reason behind their determination to reduce road crashes that has remained a dreadful plague all over the world.

Ojukwu said that the cause of the road crashes ranges from poor maintenance of vehicles, absence of appropriate road signs, poor driving skills to lack of concentration by drivers and alcoholic intakes.

He said that despite the many causes of road crashes that the Corps has been devising several means over the years to make the roads safe for all, adding that the end of year patrol operations is a ritual of the corps that seek to meet the challenges of ensuring safety on highways.

The Abia sector commander said, “It is a general knowledge that the Yuletide period is characterised by high vehicular movement all over the country with its attendant incidences of road traffic crashes, so we are determined to reduce it”.

“The axiom that says ‘crashes do not just occur’ goes to confirm that the causes of road crashes are mainly caused by road users which the Corps has been trying very hard to stem the tide”.

“We are determined to ensure the full actualization of the Corps 2017 strategic goals of enhancing public education and enlightenment, improving enforcement, refusing road traffic crashes by 15% and fatality by 24%, advance road safety administration and strengthening professionalism and transparency”.

Ojukwu said that this years’ theme seeks to bring to the consciousness the seeming eluding sense of decorum on the roads for all road users, “We are going to enlighten all road users that we all have a role to play to put an end to the car ages we usually witness during this time of the year”.

He noted that most mistakes lead to the cause of crashes which have been claiming lives, saying that no one has the right to take the life of another, “Which is the reason behind our insisting on sped limiter on fleet vehicles which will go a long way in reducing road accidents”.

  • FRSC calls for attitudinal change to stem road accidents

FRSC calls for attitudinal change to stem road accidents

The FCT Sector Commander of the Federal Road safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Gora Wobin, on Wednesday called for attitudinal change among motorists and pedestrians to stem road accidents in the country.

Wobin made the call at the launch of the 10th edition of the “Don’t Drink and Drive’’ campaign of Nigerian Breweries (NB) in collaboration with the FRSC in Abuja.

He said dangerous driving remained rampant in the FCT in spite of efforts by the corps to check the menace.

“What has eaten deep into a number of us in Nigeria today, especially in the FCT, is using phone while driving, beating traffic light, taking one-way and route violation.

“These critical offences amount to dangerous driving. Anybody that takes one-way or beats traffic light is already a dangerous driver.

“All these gadgets in the vehicles are not there for fun; how many of you use the seat belt, whether as a passenger or as a driver?

“We must ensure that most of the safety gadgets in our vehicles are put to proper use.’’

    . Cue out audio 1

Wobin also said that the “Don’t Drink and Drive’’ campaign was part of the public education programmes of the FRSC designed to address the situation.

He said the campaign would see the massive deployment of FRSC personnel across the FCT on education, enlightenment and enforcement of traffic rules and regulations within the period.

The sector commander also decried the non-use of foot bridges by pedestrians in the territory, calling on the FCT Administration to raise special courts to prosecute offenders.

“Pedestrians ought to use the foot bridges constructed by government for them. We have seen cases where people are knocked down and it doesn’t tell well of us.

“Anybody who refuses to use the pedestrian bridges, (if there is an accident), it is either you have one leg cut off or are (killed) put six feet deep.

“We need to talk to people and that is why we have devoted more of our time to going to churches, mosques, community town hall meetings to educate most of these motorists.

“Even though we don’t have it captured in our offences, if FCT would set up mobile courts to try people as it is done in Lagos, people will learn to use the pedestrian bridges’’

  • FRSC absolves demons of blame in road accidents

FRSC absolves demons of blame in road accidents

The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, has absolved demons of responsibility for the high rate of road traffic accidents during ember months.

Oyeyemi spoke at the launch of the 10th edition of the “Don’t Drink and Drive’’ campaign of the Nigerian Breweries (NB) in collaboration with the FRSC in Abuja on Wednesday.

Represented by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC boss blamed the situation on recklessness and irresponsible acts of motorists and other road users.

“The Ember Months being a period of festivities, people are wont to get drunk on a daily basis in the name of celebration.

“Nigerians must be aware that frequent cases of road crashes during this period, particularly the ember months are unconnected to demonic activities.

“This campaign, therefore, is a timely reminder that drinking and driving do not only pose threat to the life of the drunk driver, but also to the lives and property of other of all road users.

“Such are still a threat to the state of road infrastructure which costs a lot of resources to produce and mount on the highways and city centres,’’

Oyeyemi recalled that 31 accidents involving 122 people were recorded during the 2016 ember month, leaving five persons dead and 53 injured.

He said driving under the influence of alcohol and other drugs was largely responsible for the recorded cases of accidents.

This, according to him, underscores the fact that a drunk driver is more likely to drive dangerously or involve in other life-threatening road traffic violations.

The FRSC helmsman lauded the NB for placing the safety of lives and property of its customers above profit with the “Don’t Drink and Drive’’ campaign.

The Managing Director of NB, Mr Johan Doyer, said the campaign was an annual awareness creation and life-saving initiative, designed to promote responsible drinking among drivers and other road users.

Doyer, who was represented by the NB Head of Government Relations, Mr Vivian Ikem, said the programme has been running since 2008.

According to him, it was part of the company’s “Brewing a Better World” sustainability journey.

“For our road users, most especially our commercial drivers (tanker, luxury bus drivers and Keke and Okada riders), we want to encourage you to drink responsibly as the lives of the passengers are in your hands.

“One mistake on the wheel can take the lives of so many people.

“Our message is clear and simple: don’t drive and drive.

“If there is an organisation that is properly positioned to send this message, I think it is the Nigerian Breweries because we are more concerned about the lives of our fellow Nigerians than the money and profits that come to us an organisation.”

The NB chief executive commended the FRSC for its sustained commitment to the reduction of road traffic accidents and deaths as well as the success of the “Don’t Drink and Drive” campaign.

Some transport union leaders, present at the occasion, promised to pass the message to their members as well as institute their own measures to prevent drunk driving.

  • FRSC suggests holding bays as permanent solutions to Apapa gridlock

FRSC suggests holding bays as permanent solutions to Apapa gridlock

The Lagos State Sector Command, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says a permanent solution to the Apapa gridlock is the establishment of holding bays to accommodate trucks and articulated vehicles before loading.

The Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos, added that this would put an end to the perennial gridlock.

He said that all owners of tank farms should provide facilities that would accommodate trucks coming into their facilities to load.

“I think the traffic congestion problem in Apapa will be solved permanently if holding bays can be established to take trucks coming in to load.

“The stakeholders with owners of tank farms should begin to pay attention to having a holding bay that can contain some trucks before being called in to load,’’ he said.

Omeje said that government was trying to address the issue by bringing private investors to put up the facilities for the benefit of the residents.

He said that this was a fundamental issue that was needed to allow free flow of traffic within the corridor.

“We can have the private sectors coming up with the parks that some of the trucks can easily move in and wait for loading instead of parking along the streets in Apapa, thereby causing traffic.

“Through the process, the next truck to load in the tank farm will be called through electronic call-up system. This method will reduce the gridlock,’’ he said.

According to Omeje, the FRSC has partnered the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to inspect all trucks coming into the port for business.

“We have had various meetings with the stakeholders, registered operators and NPA and we told them that it will not be business as usual if their trucks are not roadworthy.

“Beside that, some of the articulated vehicles are overloaded, thereby causing traffic along the road.

“We want to ensure that our road transport safety standard schemes are implemented at the ports for every truck coming in to load,‘’ he said. (NAN)

He said that the accident, which involved a car and a mini-bus, occurred at the Ogbabo/Ojodu-Idah junction on the road.
Martins explained that it was due to a head-on collision between the car, with vehicle registration number (Abuja) ABJ 647 KC, and the mini-bus with vehicle registration number (Abuja) RSH 931 HF.
The FRSC Sector Commander said that the two victims, a man and a woman, were among the 13 persons involved, saying that 11 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
He said that the injured were taken to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, for treatment, while the corpses were similarly deposited in the morgue of the same hospital.

  • Feast, philanthropy at Okorocha’s birthday

Beyond the feast and eye-catching cakes, Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha’s 55th birthday anniversary was equally memorable for his philanthropy and vision, writes OKODILI NDIDI

With the huge crowd surging and humming, security agents and officials of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had no time to fall asleep at a corner. For two weeks, Imo State was agog, caught up in festivity. From the city centres to the village squares, celebration was in the air. While it lasted, people seemed to forget their differences, daily struggles and even secessionist tendencies elsewhere; all that mattered was the 55th birthday anniversary of their governor Rochas Okorocha.

Various enthusiastic groups competed to outdo each other to impress their gratitude and felicitation. They looked happy with their governor. Dancing groups and artistes were on hand to entertain at the carnival-like event, which some hoped would go on a little longer.

It was a harvest of tributes and praises as people from all tribes and tongues, and from all walks of life converged on Imo to celebrate the governor.

The event attracted a mammoth crowd from the first day, among whom were women and students especially beneficiaries of the state’s free education programme. Traders, civil servants and politicians held a colourful procession, adding to its grandeur.

Leaders from the 27 local government areas of the state, as well as various political camps and opinion groups took turns to felicitate with the governor, presenting him with gifts in addition to goodwill orations.

Most remarkable about the birthday anniversary was the magnanimity of the governor and founder of the Rochas Foundation College, which offers free tuition in its schools across the country.

During the birthday anniversary celebrations, Okorocha announced a scholarship award for no fewer than five children from each 55 African countries.

Codenamed 55. 5. 55, an acronym for fifty five years, scholarship for five children each from fifty five African countries, the birthday celebration afforded politicians, business associates, family, friends and the common people the opportunity to extol the virtues of  the governor.

Leading the flurry of activities was the solidarity rally by Imo women which grounded vehicular and human movement in Owerri, the state capital.

Thousands of colourfully adorned women from across the state took on a procession across major streets displaying placards with various inscriptions such as, ‘we thank God for the gift of Owelle’, ‘Owelle is a gift to humanity’, ‘Imo women celebrate the people’s Governor’, ‘Hurray our icon is 55’, ‘Imo women celebrate a selfless leader’ and ‘join us celebrate the architect of the new Imo’, among other beautiful appellations.

Most prominent among the different women groups that participated were the market women, beneficiaries of the state’s free education programme and female professionals from various disciplines who lauded the Imo governor for initiating projects and policies that have impacted positively on socio-economic status of women in the state.

Coordinator of the women and former Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Getrude Oduka said the women decided to celebrate the governor for running a gender-friendly administration that has improved the lot of women and children in the state.

According to her, the massive turnout of women for the procession was a confirmation that the women of the state are happy and grateful to the governor, adding that none of them were induced or coerced to attend.

She said, “We are here to celebrate a man that need to be celebrated, we are to celebrate an icon. For instance, he has given the entire children of Imo state an access to education, knowing full well that education is the key to life. To celebrate the architect of the new Imo, a man that has brought a lot of transformation to Imo State both in the areas of infrastructure and social development.

Speaking further, she said, “We are also celebrating a man that has the fear of God. So what Imo women are doing today is a triumphant entry into the birthday of the governor”.

Receiving the women at the Government House, wife of the governor, Nkechi Okorocha, commended the women for appreciating the governor’s efforts, adding that he has always prioritised issues that affect women and children.

She further thanked them for “being the pillar behind the success” of the Rescue Mission government and asked them to sustain it as the state “government will continue to better their lives and that of their children”.

She also thanked them for wishing her husband well as he celebrates his 55 birthday anniversary, adding that the huge show of goodwill and solidarity by Imo women will certainly spur the governor to do more in his service to not only the women of the state but to the entire humanity.

Governor Okorocha said he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love by the women of the state, pledging to continue strive to build a better society for the people of the state.

He said the occasion of his 55 birthday anniversary has given him the opportunity to reflect on God’s blessings, which he said propelled him to the height he has attained today.

He said, “I will continue with helping the less privileged, there is no slowing down. The free education programme of the Rochas Foundation has just been expanded to cover the whole Africa, where we are giving scholarship to five children each in fifty five African countries.

“In my 55 years on earth I have no regrets. I don’t regret any of my actions or decisions even though that people tend to misunderstand me sometimes. I am only grateful to God, there is nothing to regret in my 55 years on earth.

“I am so happy because the strength of this government lies on the massive support it enjoys from the women. That this government is been talked about positively in the world is because of women.

“One thing I tell anybody that cares to listen is that I am a special breed made by God for humility. I have never thought evil of anybody and so anybody that wants progress beyond limits must not think evil of me because I am specially made by God. People that love me, prosper beyond their expectations. This is the way God has made it to be”.

At the end, the women group made history by presenting the Governor with twenty seven birthday cakes representing the 27 council areas of the state, unarguably the highest to be received by a single individual in the state.

In one of such visits by stakeholders from Mbaitoli Council Area led by the state Deputy Governor, Prince Eze Madumere, the governor was lauded for given equal attention to all the zones in the state, irrespective of political interests and affiliations.

Madumere during the visit described Governor Okorocha as an “all-time giver who is ready to display generosity at all time when it bothers on human capital development”.

According to the Deputy Governor, the visit was to thank the governor for “the dividends of democracy on behalf the good people of Mbaitoli, Imo State at large and to celebrate with him as he turns 55”.

He said, “Your Excellency, I am here with my people to felicitate with you as you turn 55. You are like a spirit that possesses whosever that come across you because of what you are. Today, you have over thirteen thousand children. The one that is trending at the moment is the acronym 55-5-55. This time around, as you turn 55, you have raised your bar of philanthropy by adopting 5 children each from the 55 countries of Africa. This is another creation of Your Excellency in African leadership.”

Also speaking during the solidarity visit, the Chairman of Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Samuel Ohiri showered encomiums on the governor for blazing the trail in providing basic amenities to every part of Imo State.

He said, “Owerri zone where Mbaitoli LGA is situated is the chief beneficiary of the governor’s astute leadership and uncommon magnanimity”.

Responding, Governor Okorocha thanked the people of Mbaitoli for their support and for coming en mass to celebrate with him.

Responding, Governor Okorocha said, “Madumere is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased. My relationship with my deputy, Prince Eze Madumere for over twenty years is like that of Christ and His disciples. I saw him in the United States of America fishing. I said to him, follow me and I will make you a fisher of men. Madumere followed without argument.  In our journey in politics, we kept failing even when I ran for president. In all these, Madumere has remained steadfast and calm.”

Mbaitoli women sang moving songs to celebrate the governor.

Also in another grand rally organized by the Rochas People’s Movement at the Heroes Square, mammoth crowd gathered to witness colourful display of culture, music and artistry.

Elder statesman and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, described the governor as a good man and a visionary leader who has put the overall interest of the state above ephemeral gains.

He observed that the free education programme has distinguished Governor Okorocha from other people that had governed the state in the past.

Iwuanyanwu who spoke at one of the forum organized for the governor’s birthday at the Imo International Conference Centre (IICC), stated that the Imo governor had broken all records, adding that “anyone aspiring to govern the state must promise to sustain the free education programme”.

He added further that “the success of the free education programme had made it become a tradition to the extent that stopping it would mean dragging the state backwards. The governor had been on the right path even before he emerged winner of the 2011 governorship election in the state by helping others and investing in human beings”.

The PDP stalwart also stressed that “despite the governor’s humble background, he had shown by his style of leadership that people from poor homes can make good leaders.

That is why I see his free education as being more significant because it affects mainly the poor who ordinarily could have been out of school”.

Family members and other beneficiaries of the governor’s magnanimity also celebrated what they described as the governor’s uncommon style of leadership.

Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Acho Ihim, described the governor as a father who interested in the success of people working with him.

He said, “We have all learnt from his uncommon kindness and love for the ordinary people and this has changed the ways we think and relate with others, especially those who are not so privileged. He has also redefined politics and governance in the state and the results are there as testimony of his astute leadership”.

The Chief of State to the governor, Chief Uche Nwosu had this to say, “we all are grateful to this selfless icon for given us opportunity to rise to where we are today. So we have come to celebrate him as he turns 55 and to wish many more years of continued service to humanity.”

This is to address wrong road usage by motorists which results in a high number of crashes during festivities.

The Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, emphasized that the operation will focus on traffic control, speeding, dangerous driving/overtaking, clearance of road obstructions, seatbelt use violation, zero tolerance for use of telephone while driving, lane indiscipline and route violation among others as these have been identified as reoccurring factors of Road Traffic Crashes.

In a press statement released by the Spokesman, he stated that the 2017 Eid-El-Kabir Sallah Special patrol operation is scheduled to commence from August 31 to September 6, 2017.The personnel have been briefed appropriately to perform their duties which include public enlightenment, traffic calming, traffic control, enforcement and rescue services, he stated.

  • Motorists urged to install speed regulator

Badagry Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Fatai Adesina Bakare has appealed to transport unions and vehicle owners to ensure speed limit device is installed in their vehicles.

The Assistant Corps Commander spoke at a public enlightenment programme organised by FRSC for members of the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA) at Seme Border in Badagry, Lagos State. He said the device was introduced to stem the high rate of crashes on the road as a result of over-speeding.

Bakare said speed limiter is one of the techniques adopted in other countries to reduce the high level of road crashes.

He urged the group to monitor their members’ daily activities to ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles, adding that tyres and brakes, among other components of vehicles, must be frequently checked and serviced. He noted that no amount of money spent on maintenance of vehicles can be compared with human lives.

Bakare said the Corps would always have zero-tolerance for the use of cell phones while driving, speed limit violation, dangerous overtaking, overloading, tyre violations, lane violations and other infractions that could endanger the lives of other road users.

He urged motorists to report any FRSC official caught extorting money from road users, even as he stated that any officer caught extorting money from motorists would be dismissed.

ANLCA’s Chairman, Alhaji Bisiriyu Laisi Fanu thanked FRSC for the enlightenment, saying their members would continue to obey traffic laws.

Fanu appealed to the federal and state governments to repair roads across the country, adding that the highways are in bad shape.
