  • Rampage over stabbing of female student

Students of the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja on Tuesday went on the rampage over the alleged killing of a female student by a commercial motor cyclist popularly called okada rider.

Motorists traveling along the Okene-Abuja road were trapped for several hours, while properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed as the students in their hundreds took over the road, burning tyres, in protest of the death of their colleague.

Law enforcement agents had a hectic time before they could disperse the protesting students and force them back into the campus.

Our correspondent reliably gathered that what led to the incident happened in the town in Adankolo on Monday morning when the said female student had a misunderstanding with the okada rider over fares.

The okada rider was said to have brought out his knife and stabbed the hapless student on the stomach which later led to her death on Tuesday.

According to the source, when the death of the female student was announced, her colleagues went on the rampage and blocked the  highway.

They also commandeered a trailer belonging to Dangote group, beat up the driver and later set the vehicle ablaze.

Motorists, passers-by and commercial motorcyclists were molested by the students as they brought vehicular  movement along the corridor to a standstill.

It took the intervention of armed mobile policemen to bring situation under control, as the students were already marching towards NATACO around the International market.

Meanwhile, the Rector of the institution, Alhaji Isah Muhammed while addressing the students urged them to maintain peace and allow the law enforcement agents to investigate the case.

AFRICA WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP: Igali banks on female wrestlers

.Blames Nworie’s loss on match rustiness

Nigeria began its quest to win medal at the Africa Wrestling Championship in Alexandria, Egypt on a shaky note on Friday as Greco Roman wrestler, Emmanuel Nworie (66kg) lost two and won one match in the opening day of the competition.

The African championship in Egypt is a prerequisite to the Olympic qualifications scheduled for March 30th to April 4th in Algeria.

The All Africa Games gold medalist who is the only Nigeria Greco Roman wrestler lost to Souleymen Nasr of Tunisia in the Round 1 before losing to Mohamed Ibrahim Elsayed Ibrahim of Egypt in Round 4. He however defeated Ayoub Hanine of Morocco in the Tound 5.

In a telephone chat with SportingLife from Egypt on Friday, President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Hon Daniel Igali blames Nworie’s loss on lack of adequate competitive matches as the athlete last competed at the All Africa Games last year.

“Our Greco Roman wrestler, Emmanuel competed today but didn’t do well. He lost his two matches and lack of matches was the problem, but we will work on it. It is good that he is here because since the Africa Games in August last year, he has not competed and that is not good for them.

“So I’m not too surprised because the matches were not for someone who is not match ready but I think this will prepare him for Algeria no doubt,” Igali told SportingLife.

Nweke Rosemary 48kg, Mercy Genesis 53kg, Odunayo Adekuoroye 55kg, Nwoye Ifeoma 58kg, Aminat Adeniyi 63kg, Blessing Oborududu 69 and Blessing Onyebuchi 75kg had their weight control on Friday and Igali expressed confident in the girls as the female events begins today.

“The girls in all the female categories had their weight control today (Friday) and they will compete tomorrow. I believe the girls will do well. Honestly I want them to compete again, I want them to compete at the Africa Championship again.

“I know that with more competition, they will be fine and ready for the Olympic qualifier. I’m happy that we are here so that they will get the needed experience for the Olympic qualifier. All the athletes that are competing here will be able to go for the Olympic qualifier,” Igali said.

  • Every female’s greatest nightmare (II)

    Every female’s greatest nightmare (II)

Last week, I began discussing tips on how to avoid being raped. Parents are encouraged to check their daughters’ bodies everyday for signs of violation and also embolden them to speak out when someone plays with them in the wrong places and assure them that no form of threat made to them can manifest. It is also very important for these kids to be thoroughly lectured about their body parts and let them know it’s a taboo for anyone to play with them. Today’s kids are very smart and have the capability to give us more information than we may ever need about everything they see happening around them but they also have the tendency to be terrified and silenced by threats or gifts and other forms of reward. All these are in the hands of the parents and the way they groom their children. Also, children should know a safe, well-travelled route to take to and from school. Isolated areas should be avoided. Now, the following tips would be helpful for every female.

    Safety at home

    • Ensure there’s a door eye-viewer in your door.
    • Never automatically open your door without knowing who is on the other side-talk through the door.
    • Ask for identification from service people and verify that the visit is a legitimate one.
    • Have someone present whenever a man is going to be performing a service in your home.

    Safety on the street

    • Be alert when walking.
    • Avoid walking alone.
    • Stay in well-lit areas, away from alleys and entryways.
    • Walk confidently, directly, and at a steady pace.
    • Walk on the side of the street facing traffic.
    • If a stranger stops to ask directions, avoid getting near the vehicle.
    • Do not hitchhike and only accept rides from people you know well.
    • If a car appears to be following you, turn and walk in the opposite direction.
    • If you are in trouble, attract help in any way you can. Yell, call for help, shout ‘fire’, or break a window.
    • Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you, even those you know.
    • If possible, walk in pairs.
    • Plan your route ahead of time.
    • Know your neighbourhood – be aware of nearby businesses, their hours of operation and their locations.
    • If you sense you are being followed, immediately cross to the other side of the street and head for the nearest business or occupied dwelling.
    • When seeking help from the occupant of a residence, yell ‘fire’ as opposed to ‘help’, ‘rape’, or ‘murder’ and use any means necessary to draw attention to the situation.

    My darling sisters,

So many of you are very vulnerable to rape because you have the tendency to get carried away when guys are all over you especially when you are new on campus having anticipated so much fun and freedom at last and this is why you need to be properly lectured by decent adults around you before setting out. On campus, never totally let your guard down until someone has earned your trust because you can’t avoid associating with guys especially in class. But assuming people you’ve just met will look out for your best interests can have dangerous consequences. Don’t be naïve. That seemingly-sweet and innocent-looking, mummy’s boy might not be as nice as he appears. The majority of sexual assaults these days are committed by someone the victim knows.

Always trust your instincts. If you attend a social gathering and feel unsafe or uncomfortable, even when your friends are there, leave the gathering not caring what others would think or whose feelings would be hurt. Your safety matters most. Except you thoroughly screen your friends, there will always be a friend in your circle who could end up getting you into serious trouble. So, you need to be careful while choosing your friends. Also, don’t forget to have your cell phone with you always fully charged so you can make a quick call or send a text when you begin to sense you are in danger. Please stay away from alcohol and ensure your drink is opened in your presence because it could be spiked or tainted with drugs.

Be mysterious online. Posting your whereabouts exposes details that are accessible to everyone, and allows people to track your movements. If you wouldn’t reveal the info to a stranger, then don’t put it on your profile.

There’s more to discuss on rape. Let me leave you with this for now – no longer shall the sun be your light by day; or the moon by night, but the Lord shall be your everlasting light and beam His light on your path; thus says the Lord of Hosts. God shall send you help from His sanctuary and strengthen you out of Zion in Jesus mighty name. God loves you, so do I.

  • Every female’s greatest nightmare

    Every female’s greatest nightmare

Dear Aunty Temilolu, I like your column in THE NATION on Sunday. It’s really inspiring. Keep up the good work. However, I need you to advise on how I can avoid being raped, precautions to take etc. I would be grateful if you could write on that. Thanks ma.

    A curious, teenage girl

My darling, precious, glorious, dignified, world-famous and heavenly celebrated Nigerian sisters,

Rape and other forms of sexual assault are crimes of violence and control that stem from a person’s determination to exercise power over another. Neither provocative dress nor promiscuous behaviour is invitation for unwanted sexual activity. Forcing someone to engage in non-consensual sexual activity is violence with sex as a weapon.

You must have realised by now that the masculine culture treat women primarily as objects of sexual desire and this can be seen in music videos, movies, magazines and other pornographic materials. Not only are we seen as sex objects but as legitimate targets in sexual pursuits always ready for sex, and being coerced or forced into sexual activity and we are assumed to enjoy it in whatever form it comes.

Unfortunately, here in Nigeria, rape is not viewed with the severity it requires. Married women may get some sympathy but a young unmarried girl is often jeered at. She may end up being the butt of lewd jokes such as ‘was she a virgin?’  ‘Can she say that she did not enjoy it?’ She may be accused of having aroused the man with her flimsy dressing even when she was decently dressed. One could go on and on.

This is one of the forms of oppression the female folk go through in a male dominated society. Victims are very reluctant to talk about it not to mention seeking redress for such violation of their rights because of being stigmatised and even being made to feel worse. We have heard of people whose lives went downhill and some who committed suicide because of the feeling of shame, guilt and unworthiness that enveloped them.

No one ever asks to be raped but this is an occurrence better imagined than experienced. Every woman is a potential victim regardless of age, perceived degree of attractiveness or socio-economic status. And obviously the younger girls are more at risk. This is because young girls often yearn for so much love and attention and unfortunately, the sexual predator is often attuned to the emotional and relational needs of the potential victims.

Let’s be frank with each other the world is changing fast. Today’s rapists are no more strangers. They are friends, family, associates, teachers, and clergy men, men we respect and even trust our lives with. A lot of them even watched us grow and developed wild desires and imaginations about us at every stage of our lives. They are snipers who prey on unsuspecting innocent girls. Not every man out there is sane so you really have to beware of men. Stop sitting on that uncle’s laps. Don’t let any man call you “my wife,” you are only wife to whoever you are properly married to. Enough of unending praises about how beautiful you’ve become- they could get into your heads and make you follow these wolves in sheep clothing to your doom. You don’t need to accept every invitation to be given a treat at the eatery or wherever. It’s no longer safe for you to go partying with guys. It’s not safe for you to go visiting a male friend, not even your pastor! Whatever deliverance or prayer session you want to do should be done in the church. It is not safe for you to have a male confidant or mentor in private. What are you confiding in him for and what is he mentoring you about in private? There are so many girls who fell in love with their so-called mentors and got raped by them. Don’t forget the heart of man is deceitful and desperately wicked-who can know it all? There are so many social and unsuspecting instances where a girl could be raped so you need to be extremely careful and trust no man. If fathers could brazenly rape their daughters then every man is a suspect! Next week I’ll highlight tips on preventing rape. May the mighty hand of God rest upon your lives and may He beam His light upon your paths. I love you my sweeties and look forward to hearing more of your stories. Your secrets are safe as usual and above all, with God, you are a champion for life. AMEN!

  • Female genital cutting:Cutting away a young woman’s right to personal pride, privacy, pleasure, personality and possibly reproduction

    Part 11
    Continued from last week

    Sex and reproduction:

In a busy outpatient Gynaecology clinic, a Professor asked  a young lady that had been  investigated exhaustively  for primary infertility a few questions concerning sex with her husband ; was sex  more frequent around mid cycle, and regular? She answered in the affirmative. When asked  if she enjoyed sex with him, she said there were no problems, but  asked to recall two three times she experienced orgasm, she claimed such things only happened  between  couples who are not born again. With controlled anger, the Consultant Gynaecologist  referred her to the counselling unit .

Inability to reach orgasm during penovaginal sex(aorgasmic coitus) has been found to be associated with certain cases of infertility.  Particularly in women married to men with borderline or low sperm count, the little sperm cells produced (normal ejaculate should fill up a teaspoon) may also have problems with morphology as well as with motility. Ability of the couple to achieve pregnancy may in that situation depend on the ability of the woman to create enough negative(sucking )pressure in the endo cervix, uterus and up to the outer fallopian tube so sperm cells can swim up stream and fertilize ovum.  Without adequate counselling the chances of this occurring are lower in conditions of persistent aorgasmic coitus.

Infection in the genitor urinary tract introduced during genital manipulation , cutting or mutilation is  capable of blocking the fallopian tubes, the inner walls of which are liable to become organised and plastic in the growing female child. When that happens, even the uterus could become underdeveloped.  The result is infertility or abortions(miscarriages) during the life of the woman

During pregnancy, nearly all organs of the body are increased in size; some more than others.  The clitoris and the adjoining small lips of the vagina are no exemption; the observed changes are physiological and  except in the case of the breast and other major organs, will come back to pre pregnancy status. During the third(last) stage of normal  labour , baby’s head stretches every thing in the opening of the birth canal . For large babies(normal birth weight of Nigerian babies on the average=3.5kg), a mother may suffer lacerations or bruises in the areas at the top, bottom and sides of the vagina. These may involve significant bleeding when they involve prominent blood vessels. Doctors prevent these by giving neat surgical cuts and repairing them almost immediately after. In women that have had genital cutting, the protective cushion offered by the structures that are removed is taken away.  Back of baby’s head comes into direct contact with the under surface of the pubic bone and because the pain felt in this region is different from the pain felt as a result of contraction of the uterus(womb), the woman pushes baby out even at the risk of having the cervix torn to pieces and bleeding to death because she is simply unable to bear the agonizing pain.  Post partum pain is also more severe for the same reasons

    Conclusion

In spite of  the efforts by governments, individuals and organizations to  remove the falsehood and myth about female genital cutting ,inform and educate  the public about the dangers associated with the practice , many communities in Nigeria have refused to break with tradition and embrace change. Ignorance , poverty and failure of Governments to enforce rights of the child are responsible for the situation and must be reasonably considered if the resistance to change can be overcome.

It is clear from what has been discussed in this article that removing the clitoris does not dampen a woman’s appetite for sex  because other parts of the body are designed by the creator to behave  in exactly the same way as the clitoris. Cutting away the clitoris  in some women creates instead, situations where it becomes difficult to understand and define sexual arousal in terms of commencement, peak etc.  The wound that is caused heals with scar formation and the resulting distortion brings about chronic pain and mixed sensations that do not respond to treatment. The bottom line is that  once in an atmosphere of sex, the woman with an amputated clitoris finds her emotions oscillating ; if it manages to ascend, it might reach a level where it hangs and then it may take days to stabilize. The clitoris like other organs of the body affects emotional health and vice versa. It should therefore be left undisturbed so that the body remains emotionally balanced.

    Recommendations

It is time governments and legislators organized an update on the rights of children.

Many of our Moms and Dads are not aware of the child right acts ,and so children die every day from circumstances that are avoidable from neglect to acts of omission and others that could have directly or indirectly caused death.

Emphasis should be on educating the  girl child and the illiterate woman.

When a  child is dying and a mother refuses to sign consent for the child to have a unit of blood transfused for reason the church forbids it, and the child goes on to die, there should be an aspect of the child rights act  strong  enough to hold the parents  accountable.

As soon as the bag containing non sterile equipment was opened, Shanice  the  five year old girl mentioned in the first part of this article sensed danger. She was not ill,  and could not have seen any reason why any one would want  to do  anything drastic to make her well. She made to rise but was held down, as could be observed in the accompanying photograph; and so helplessly the little girl, went  through trauma to have  a part of her body cut off and thrown away against her will. Shanice is alive, but a very angry woman; a Prophet  in the Holy Bible stood and faced four hundred men, but when challenged by one angry woman, he fled the city. Details of what went between the parents whose responsibility it was to protect Shanice  could not possibly be known, but usually, these issues are forced down on husbands. Except for  a small number of educated men and women,  it is much easier for a man to break with traditional practices considered harmful, compared with women. The current government  must therefore do all that is humanly possible to ensure that  education for the girl child is placed on the priority list. With the quality  of education  in this country persistently  on the decline, it is time the Federal government  did a review of the current policy on education  to capture the poor who unfortunately are the majority. Let there be free education for all at least up to secondary school level .

Health education should be given a pride of place by governments at all levels . It is unfortunate that in churches, mosques and other religious places of worship where families congregate, topics on human sexuality are considered taboo. It is my opinion that  these places where individuals are likely to take matters seriously, basic and relevant aspects of  male and female sexuality and where and when necessary sexual health should be discussed.

Also, Schools and institutions of higher learning should  be allowed to provide information on sexual health ,provided such information is strictly age appropriate and delivered under  the supervision of equally appropriate and relevant authorities.

Health education must in this matter be made to cover a wide range of subjects including the fact that  female genital cutting in addition to producing a sexually dysfunctional woman does the exact opposite of what is generally  intended;  syndrome of ever burning desire .

  • ExxonMobil women woo female students

    ExxonMobil women woo female students

Women professionals in ExxonMobil Nigeria are looking to swell their ranks in the company.

They have taken their campaign to universities to encourage female students in the geosciences and engineering departments to pursue careers in oil and gas.

The programme called, WIN University Outreach, will focus on wooing female undergraduates to pursue careers in ExxonMobil and achieving success while at it.

The initiative, which kicked off at the University of Ibadan last week, is a follow up to another programme, “Introduce a girl to science and engineering”, targeted at secondary school female pupils.

Mrs Toyin Sarumi, President of the ExxonMobil Women Interest Network (WIN), which is pushing the campaign, said in an interview that the women have started their crusade with the 17 universities where ExxonMobil has its intervention programme, the University Assistance Programme (UAP).

Mrs Sarumi, a reservoir engineer, said members of the group would share their success stories with the girls so they can aspire to work in the energy sector.

“We will present ExxonMobil as a company; who we are, what we do; and encourage them to take up careers in oil and gas.  When girls take these courses they do not pursue a career because they don’t think it is possible to be successful and have a balanced life.  I have had a career of two decades and I have been able to joggle my career with motherhood and being a wife,” she said.

Vice President of the group, Mrs Jumoke Akinpelu, added that beyond the career counseling event, members would be available to mentor the students as they advance in their studies and careers.

“Our strategy here is to sell success to them.  Our goal is to mentor them to let them know what they need to succeed in Mobil.  WE will tell them they can get into ExxonMobil with 2.1.

“A small percentage goes out to practice; it is because they do not have role models.  We will be following up; we will take their emails so we can ask them how they are doing,” she said.

The universities to be visited in the first phase of the campaign include: Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt; Osun State University, Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; University of Lagos, Akoka; Federal University of Technology, Owerri; University of Port Harcourt; University of Calabar; and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

Others are: “University of Benin; Delta State University, Abraka; Akwa Ibom State University; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; Enugu State University of Science and Technology; Federal University of Technology, Akure; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Anambra State University, Uli; and the American University, Yola.

  • Female genital cutting:Cutting away a young woman’s right to personal pride, privacy, pleasure, personality and possibly reproduction

Female genital cutting:Cutting away a young woman’s right to personal pride, privacy, pleasure, personality and possibly reproduction

As explained in the first part of this article  published last week,  genital mutilation is a much broader term and may in fact include female genital cutting. In over 80% of cases of genital mutilation, enthusiasts are consenting; wanting to look wild and different.  Female genital cutting  on the other hand, involves cutting and throwing away not only  the clitoris, but in addition, the fleshy hood over it, and the upper parts of the labia minora(the small vaginal lips). In some cases, the whole of the smaller vaginal lips are cut off  in what might be referred to as crude and blind surgery

Where as the aim in female genital cutting  is to presto a new woman, the reverse is often the case, because it is forced on the child or woman. Besides, more and more people are getting involved in marriages across cultures and what looks alright to one man may be seen and given more sinister interpretations by another , particularly if the  latter comes from a different part of the world. Besides, and for reasons that will be discussed, removing the clitoris does not reduce a woman’s appetite for sex. There is evidence that in some cases, amputation of the clitoris actually puts a woman in a state of permanent arousal. Studies have shown that in some cases, women who had their clitoris removed before  or after puberty exhibit lower threshold for foreplay and have  in any atmosphere where intentions  of sexual nature have been communicated actually demonstrated reduced capacity to delay sexual gratification . The implications of this can be imagined in terms of ability of a  woman  to overcome sexual temptations encountered  as she  goes through the different stages of life.

Like  in the case of Shanice, the young woman who had her clitoris removed when she was five year old, there is usually the tendency to give the impression that what has to be done must be done to prevent unknown calamities  befalling parents or the girl child, but the whole thing is rooted in falsehood and illiteracy. The girl child compared with a male of the same parent  is particularly vulnerable to harmful traditional practices. This is also more likely the consequence of illiteracy and poverty. In rural communities, the traditional  husband  is more likely to be a polygamous father and  to take issues concerning the health of a son very seriously while leaving the girl child for  the wife and  the older members of the family to watch over. This partly explains why a mother is more useful to her family, community and country if she is educated.  An educated woman is more likely to have fewer children, protect them fiercely,  initiate and sustain a clean break with harmful traditional practices. Female genital cutting the way it is done in many communities in the country is certainly harmful as discussed here under.

    Complications Of Female Genital Cutting

There are many possible complications of female genital cutting; the ones that are commonly encountered  can be classified into two broad groups; early and late

    Early Complications

    Haemorrhage

Among the early complications , bleeding and  infection can be particularly dangerous

As was shown in the photograph, the cutting is done without preparations to control or arrest bleeding . Compared with adults, children do not have the amount of  blood reserve that adults and pregnant women  commonly have in situations of bleeding from wounds. Under the conditions of bleeding from open wounds created during cutting of the clitoris, prepuce and labia minora, the child may go into  hemorrhagic shock and die from there. If she survives that period, damage to certain organs of reproduction as a result of the blood loss will manifest later by way of primary infertility , starting with menstrual problems. This is further complicated by the fact that unlike what is done in Hospitals, no laboratory tests are done to know the level of haemoglobin(Hb) and to know if the child has an underlying bleeding disorder.

    Infections

As concerns infections, the real danger  is Tetanus, but apart from that, using locally made cutting instruments that are not sterilized places the child at the risk of contracting Hepatitis B and the dreaded HIV/AIDS. Despite  the much talked about ATS(antitetanus serum), only few cases of established tetanus infection survive, and of course, Hepatitis B and HIV/AIDS both have no cure; they can only be treated.

The clitoris is so intimately related to the urinary tract opening that  infection (ascending) of the urinary tract is almost always associated with female genital cutting. The blind nature of the operation and the poor conditions of hygiene under which it is done increases the likelihood of urinary tract infection, pyelonephritis, nephritis , kidney damage and failure

When death occurs either from infections or haemorrhage, the truth is hidden, and the victim buried secretly to conceal primary cause of death

    Late Complications

    Chronic pain

Among the late complications, chronic pain is one common feature. Affected women often find it difficult to describe the pain or where it is coming from. However, many of them complain of pain during sex(dyspareunia) even with husbands who according to them are endowed with phallic organs below average in size. Other women complain of pain during sexual excitation, during sex and even after

    Abnormal sensation

    Other complaints include the following;

Sensation of something  being present inside the vagina

Sensation of  the womb coming down or trying to fall out

Excessive reaction to pain, and crying about pain even, when there is obviously no source of pain

Inability to hold urine(urinary incontinence) during sex; the bed is flooded with urine during sex or every five or so many minutes, wife interrupts the  coitus to go and void

Abnormal sensation of sweet tingly, prickly or pins and needles pain

Inability to achieve orgasm  in addition to a situation of  sexual arousal that refuses to ebb or go down even days after sex, creating tension and the restless pubis syndrome.

Several medical terms  including  vaginismus, par aesthesia dyspareunia, hyperalgesia, allodynia, etc have been used to describe these abnormal sensations ,which  can be understood from the fact that the clitoris is richly blessed with abundant supply of delicate  nerve fibres that  are better left alone. The clitoris is one of the few organs in the body designed  with double nerve supply ;the pudendal nerve and the perineal branch of the posterior  femoral cutaneous nerve. The organ also contains fibres from the sympathetic and parasympathetic chains of the autonomic nervous system .Recently scientists have been able to map the area of the brain(cerebrum) which receives, registers and  controls activities of the clitoris and have found that the  clitoris, nipple and other parts of the female body share commonalities in many respects.

    Psycho social issues:

As told  in medical sociology, even in churches; behind closed doors,  how a couple wants to have sex, where, how and for what reasons are purely and truthfully for them to decide. No one , is expected to meddle in the matrimonial affairs of any pair in legitimate relationship.

Sexual needs and  identity begin early in life . Indeed by the time a child reaches the age of  five(earlier in some and later in others),she will have  passed the initial rungs of the ladder of  psycho sexual development as espoused by Sigmund Freud and will have  begun to appreciate  sexual identity. This identity takes many issues into consideration and will not be discussed here because doing so might not be appropriate for some children who though very young are able to assess information of sensitive nature from the internet.  From this age of five, older or younger  as discussed , any inappropriate physical activity of what ever nature or assault on the genitalia is likely to be written down in her mental diary and will remain there for the rest of her life.  What ever she knows about her self in general and about specific parts of her body will be  recorded,  played and compared several times over  in her brain as she grows and matures, interacting with her environment and exposed to positive and negative reinforcement, depending on many other factors. It  thus becomes a huge problem with far reaching ramifications when  a child is allowed to grow into adulthood  with the knowledge that she is different in one particular part of her body compared with other women.  In most of the situations in Nigeria, where  in accordance with the rules and regulations of a church, intending partners are not allowed to come into any significant degrees of intimacy until union is solemnized, pre marriage counsellors may have issues with partner disclosure status ,with  physical examination presenting matters of their own specific nature.

    Social issues:

For  women  who have  had the clitoris amputated ,a wide range of dysfunctional sexual responses have been documented.  To begin with, no responsible man would want sex with his wife or partner to assume the form of rape ,and so for legitimate marital or spousal sex, one reason for foreplay is to adequately prepare a woman for reception and avoid vaginal hostility . Conscious of the fact that down below, she is not quite as complete as she should be,  an affected  woman may  want to hide  that part of her body considering  herself inadequate before her husband ; intra psychic conflicts declare themselves, and with  the mind searching for ways to cope with her seeming incompleteness,  response might come  in ways that may be interpreted as primitive, hostile(mind body disconnect), unusual, bizarre or inappropriate. She may even find herself unable to respond at all.

In any marriage or successful  relationship, a partner finds fulfilment in being desired  and this can be  projected(at least to a large extent)  by way of verbal and non verbal communication. While  in bed, coldness, unusual demands and responses could be easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. It only takes a little miscalculation thereafter for affected couples to start filing papers for divorce sighting what they commonly refer to as irreconcilable differences

Mr Babatunde Disu, the Managing Director of LAGBUS, gave this indication in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

Disu noted that female drivers were more caring and careful, adding that being gender sensitive, would facilitate the realisation of the mandate of the company.

“We are interested in getting more female drivers because they take good care of our buses and are more careful on the roads.

“We want more of them to come into the system; we are calling on those who are interested to apply,’’ he said.

Disu also said that the company was ready to train any lady or woman, who was interested in driving the metropolitan buses.

He said that successful ones would be certified by the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) before a bus would be allocated them.

Meanwhile, one of the female bus drivers, Rose Joseph, a mother of two, has urged passenger to see them as a professional and always encourage them.

“Area boys and men on uniform harass us, sometimes at non-designated bus stops, sometimes when we are trying to help passengers.

“Although its challenging, but you need to be focused and determined; the management even gave some considerations to women,’’ Joseph said.

Mrs Abimbola Agbekola, an accountant and a graduate from University of Lagos, also a driver, urged females to join the programme and make living from it, adding that “what a man can do, a woman can do better.”

Agbekola said driving articulated vehicles, such as the LAGBUS, was a way of empowering the female gender.

“My husband saw the advert in a road show organised by the management, and he told me when he got back home, and advised me to apply because he knows I have passion for driving.

“You may not have driving skill but management of LAGBUS will train you and you will be certified by LASDRI.

“I have passion for it, so I do not listen to what the passengers say, but try to be focused.

“This is an opportunity for female gender to empower themselves and make life better, instead of waiting for their husband to do everything for them,” she said.
