BRAIN: YOU CAN’T IGNORE FEMALE FANS

YOUNG, talented and brazen are words that do not fully capture the essence of music artiste Adeleke Victor Matanmi, though they come close. The 24-year-old, a graduate of Industrial and Labour Relations from the Olabisi Onabanjo University, who goes by the stage-name Brain, recently released a new single, Ileke. Ileke means beads in Yoruba language.

“The Ileke single is my own way of connecting to the ladies out there and appreciating their keen support all through the beginning of my sojourn into music,” he said.

Signed on to Magikal Entertainment, Brain’s other singles include Gaara, So Crazy, The Bridge (tribute to Nelson Mandela), Salute and Lubadi.

For Brain, the first son in family of four children, growing up in Ketu, Lagos, was fun.

“I came from a very humble family, my dad and mum tried to give us the best life we could have. We had the best elementary education,” he said.

“We went to the best schools around and presently we doing them proud in all ramifications.”

However, Brain said his parents did not allow himself and his siblings to mix with other kids while growing up.

“There was a time my brother and I had the chance to go out, our folks weren’t around, so we mixed with other kids and were rolling tyres on the street. Then on our way back home, we looked up the balcony and saw our grandmother, she was waiting and we knew we were in trouble instantly. So she signalled us to come up. We saw pepper soup that day because she flogged us. She flogged our hands and feet that we were using to roll the tyres and ever since then we dared not try it to go out without permission.”

But how did Brain get into music?

He said it all began in his household, especially through his father.

“My dad plays music a lot. He is a music lover. Unconsciously, I started loving music and in my own spare time I look for the latest song. I listen to it and sing alone. After a while, I started singing in class to popular songs and people actually loved listening to me while singing. So they came around. So, I started loving it. After a while, I started writing my own songs. Then the love just grew from there.”

While in school, he tagged team with some other guys, who rapped, to form a group.

“From that moment,” he said, “I knew I was going to be a musician.”

The artiste, however, realises that being a musician is not a walk-in-the-park. In fact, the rigorous process of creating music informed how he got his stage name.

“I had earlier decided that whenever I was ready to take music fulltime, I would look for a name that is unique and that was how the name (Brain) was born,” he said.

“I am also of the view point that if your brain defines the music and the music defines you, then the brain defines you automatically.”

But having a cerebral name did not stop stage-fright.

“My first experience on stage was very frightening,” he said.

“I had so many things popping up in my brain. I was going to face a huge audience, and would they like my music and stuff like that keeps ringing in my head.  When I eventually got on stage, I almost lost my voice because I was totally blank for some moments. But after some minutes, I gained my courage back and the faces I saw was not the angry ones. They loved my performance and I was so much fulfilled that night.”

For the musician, it has not been smooth sailing all through. Initially, his folks did not know he was into music. He was already into it before they noticed. Even then, they didn’t grant their wholehearted blessings.

“They weren’t in objection like that, though there was no support in any way for my music. They didn’t say I shouldn’t do it. It gradually came to their notice. I am a very quiet person, so they usually don’t know what I am doing aside schooling. But after a while, they started noticing me writing in a book; they started noticing me singing to myself and a couple of other people. They knew I was singing but they didn’t object. They didn’t support me financially. As far as I was going to school, there was no objection.”

Brain said his parents have, however, become more supportive since they’ve seen him making progress in his music venture.

Though Brain is still griping with the challenges associated with many up and coming artistes, he describes the reception of his music as ‘wonderful.’

“Everywhere I go and people see me do my thing, the acceptance is always awesome. I know that people love it, so I just keep doing my thing.”

Though he has a degree in Industrial and Labour Relations, Brain believes so much in the talents God has given him – doing music. A talent he does not intend giving up.

“I don’t see myself doing anything else besides music and I am ready to go all the way to touch lives with my music. Life is not a bed of roses and tears of thorns; it is simply a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly. You can’t eat your cake and have it.”

Brain who eyes beyond the country for his music believes his voice texture and his rap style stand him out from other artistes.

“The way I rap brings out the uniqueness in me,” he said. “I am diversified in the sense that I can do a blend of reggae, RNB and hip-hop and still make a whole lot of sense.”

Becoming popular surely attracts female fans, a fact that Brain appreciates so well. But how does he cope with his female fans?

“I try as much as possible to be nice to everyone,” he said, “because as you know, it’s the female folks that constitute most of male artiste’s fan base, so you can’t ignore them. I only know where and when to draw the lines.”

  • Obasanjo, Soyinka hail female drummer, Ara on birthday

Obasanjo, Soyinka hail female drummer, Ara on birthday

Africa’s foremost female drummer and one of Nigeria’s greatest entertainment exports, Aralola Olamuyiwa, popularly known as Ara, has been described a pride to the African youth by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

Obasanjo said this at Ara’s birthday celebration which held recently at the prestigious Oriental Hotel, Lagos.

“While I wish you a very happy birthday, I also want to commend you for all you have been able to achieve at such a young age,” said Obasanjo in his congratulatory message. “You have done very well for yourself; you have succeeded in placing our culture on the map of the world. The talking drum used to be associated with dirty old men but with your smartness, talent and doggedness, you have added glamour and value to the act of playing the talking drum. I urge our youths to take a cue from you and promote our culture because that is all we have and who we are.”

Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka also commended the ace drummer for her contributions to the arts industry. “A happy birthday to our very talented and gifted artiste,” the bard said. “I remember you started very young, quite young then when I heard of you. You are a model to be emulated by the young people, absolutely no height to which you cannot reach if you are committed. Congratulations.”

The multi-pronged event, tagged, ‘an evening with Ara’ featured a movie premiere, album preview, a special birthday dinner and intellectual discourse.

“I had a whole lot of accumulated activities that have been pending due to my national and international engagements,” said Ara, “but I have decided to use today, being my birthday, to fraternise, hobnob and cross pollinate ideas with stakeholders of the Ara brand, amidst all the various activities you have witnessed.”

Dr Joe Odumakin, Barrister Mohammed Fawehinmi and other eminent Nigerians were part of the discussants and guest speakers on the topic: ‘The Nigerian Youth; Problem and Solution’ at the discuss section of the event.

Besides a special birthday dinner held in Ara’s honour, the evening was also spiced with an exclusive screening of her much touted movie; ‘Osunfunke’.

“The movie, ‘Osunfunke’ is an extension of my theatrical talent,” Ara said. “(It’s) another medium I have chosen to express myself as an entertainer with a passionate commitment to the promotion of our socio-cultural heritage.”

Guests also got the privilege to listen to some tracks from Ara’s much-anticipated debut album due for release soon. The artiste explained that the opinions of the panel of discussants will add great value to the album.

At the event, Ara signed a new management deal with one of Nigeria’s top artiste management outfit, Akinwale Oluwaleimu’s Event and Entertainment Consult. It was also disclosed that Ara is currently signed on to Aremo Segun Oniru’s ‘D Prince Is Here Entertainment’ record label.

  • Some causes and treatment of male, female infertility (5)

Being the fifth part in the serialisation of the paper presented by Femi Kusa at the training seminar of the NATIONAL INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE ASSOCIATION (NIMPA) held on 8th October 2014 at the WATER PARKS HOTEL,Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos.

We are back to terra ferma, which are familiar grounds. Apart from infections which may cause inflammation, scarring or blockage of the fallopian tubes, not to mention ovarian cysts, other common causes of infertility in women are hormonal imbalance (already discussed) and uterine fibroids. I would like to begin with uterine fibroids and some of the natural remedies which have helped some women resolve them. Uterine fibroids have become a torment to many women. If we keep medical records properly in Nigeria, we may discover that more than half of the female population live under this scourge. Many women have gone through unspeakable experiences while they try to resolve it through herbal medicine. But despite the menace of quacks, we have witnessed many encouraging interventions. Some decades ago, I walked into Elizabeth Kafaru’s ELIKAF CLINIC in Ogba, Lagos, as a woman bleeding from the vagina was being put in a taxi that would take her to ADAZIE HOSPITAL in Mushin, also in Lagos. This woman was one of the many fibroid-troubled women who did not wish to have the growths surgically removed from fear that the knife may damage their wombs. AT ELIKAF CLINIC, as in many other helpful clinics, Ijaw women help to massage the pelvis to achieve all sorts of positive results. It is a healing art which they inherited from their forebears. Had this country visionary governments, this healing arts, like many others, would have been refined and taught to gynaecologists, to achieve that integration in medicine, we all so eagerly long for. I have seen and heard of many cases of babies not well positioned in the womb for safe delivery, which were to warrant surgical birth, but which these women had brought to natural conclusion simply through massage and petting of the coming babies.

How easier getting pregnant or having pregnant women delivered of their babies could have become in our country is better imagined if this art had been well recognised by government and mainstream medicine and then developed and incorporated into hospital gynaecology protocols. Such is the dream of an Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria educated architect, Dr. BisolaFernadez, who has also trained as an orthodox medical doctor and gynaecologist. He find natural medicine so dynamic in the treatment of female reproductive ailment that he has been enlisted for training in this area new to him. So, do not be surprised if he shows up at the next seminar of NIMPA.

From here, I would now like to explore some hypothetical causes of uterine fibroids and suggestions offered in several literature for their resolution.

    UTERINE FIBROIDS

As already stated, uterine fibroids may not hinder fertility. But, sometimes, they may be a “Rock of Gibraltar” barrier. Its prevalence in the Nigerian female population seeking a “fruit of the womb” should challenge us to see it as an important possible obstacle. There are about 20 possible causes or  different combinations of them, according to many researchers. We cannot examine them all. So, here are a few:

    •Back up or retrograde menstruation.

•Estrogenation i.e. elevated blood estrogen levels

•Emotional distress and second chakra impairment or energy outage

    •Spinal subluxations

    •Deoxygenations

    •Poor blood circulation

•Free radical damage and antioxidant deficiency

•Nutritional deficiencies, including insufficiencies of Vitamin E, Essential Fatty Acids and Magnesium deficiency

•Microbial (yeast, Candida, viruses etc.) nibbling and damage

    •Heavy metal poisoning

    •Potassium deficiency

    •Infection

any researchers believe all the discarded blood (menstrual flow) didn’t flow out. Some which hung or stayed back is named “back-up menstrual blood” or “retrograde” menstruation. It is considered a “waste and an irritant. Lodging in otherwise healthy uterine muscles tissue, retrograde blood would in time cause blood circulation slow-down or stasis. This would imply congestion, inflammation, pain, a habitat for germs, the waste products of which compound the poisoning of the tissue. Circulation stallage or stasis would imply deoxygenation. According to the theorists, irritated muscle tissue would seek other means of existence outside the disturbed or destroyed norm.

This, they say, is the onset of uterine fibroids. Resolving it, then, would mean putting all processes in the womb back on the reverse mode. Thus, a healthy blood circulation must be promoted.

Horsechestnut, which promotes circulation downstream, is a good ally here. So is cayenne pepper. In particular, cayenne helps in dissolving blood clots. Like Apple Cider Vinegar, it should help women whose menstruation comes with dark blood clots. In a few months, the menstrual blood should be clean and rich-red again. Apple Cider Vinegar has the advantage of preventing excessive bleeding which may cause anaemia and weakness. Many women beset with uterine fibroids bleed excessively. I always encourage them to take Yarrow, Stinging Nettle, Beet root, Apple Cider Vinegar, Shepherd’s Purse and Silica. Silica is found in little amounts in Nettle and more in Horsetail. But the richest source of it would appear to be Damatomaceus which is 96 per cent silica. If damatomaceus is too mouthy to easily pronounce or remember, call it by its other name…food grade edible earth.

Edible Earth? Yes, edible earth! That’s not for discussion today. What may be is that silica is one of the most abundant minerals on the earth’s surface which, surprisingly, some people may lack. It does many things in the body, including the promotion of digestion, support for bowel movement, killing of germs in the intestine, supporting absorption of calcium and other minerals, alkalising the body, breaking up of tumours and other growths, energy production, control of appetite, improvement of skin hair, nail and teeth tone. Silica is present in connective tissue and tighten the collagen bonding the cells. This is what I believe make it useful in stopping excessive bleeding where blood vessels are weak and loose, letting out their content. As for the other remedies, they may very well be rich source of bioflavonoids which behaves like silica when it comes to stoping bleeding. I remember always three cases whenever I have to suggest Apple Cider Vinegar. I had learnt from Cyril in the 1980s that Apple Cider Vinegar stops excessive bleeding. So when one of my aunties was going to have her womb removed because it had been filled with fibroids and she had bled so much and continually for months that she couldn’t climb the stairs of her home, I advised the surgery be postponed by one month to enable her take Apple Cider Vinegar for that long before the evacuation. The hospital had many of her relations donate blood because it was thought she would need a blood transfusion after the surgery. But she had no need for it! For the Apple Cider Vinegar prevented alarming bleeding. The second case was that of an editor in Lagos whose doctors believed would need a blood transfusion after a hernia surgery. He took Apple Cider Vinegar six weeks before the surgery and needed no transfusion. If I had my wife’s permission to say this, I would add that, in the last three months of pregnancy, she took Apple Cider Vinegar to prevent excessive bleeding during and after childbirth.

    ESTROGENATION

Many women are estrogenated. That means they have more estrogen vis-à-vis progesterone, another female hormone, than they should have. This may signal as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), such as when the breasts swell and become sore and painful before menstruation, or as period pains. Such woman are advised not to take egg or milk or food wrapped with cellophane. Estrogen is fed to chickens to make them lay eggs almost every day. It is fed to cow to make them produce more milk every day. In the egg and poultry fresh, therefore, there is estrogen, as it is present in cows milk. Cellophane emits zenoestrogen into food. With such exposure to these estrogen sources, a woman’s body may become suffused with, and ravaged by estrogen. Rising estrogen levels mean falling progesterone ratios. Progesterone is needed to make the placenta viable. The fetus feeds through the placenta an unviable placenta is one of many reasons spontaneous abortion occur and pregnancies are lost. Balancing are lost. Balancing the estrogen-progesterone ratios involves some work.

As already stated, thyroid function must be balanced, and the pituitary gland and other endocrine glands must function synegically for healthy pituitary gland function, one of the herbs of choice is VITEX, also known as CHASTEBERY. Effort must be made to ensure the three major fractions of estrogen (estriol, estrone and estradiol) are in the right ratios while relying on herbs such as Vitex, Black Cohost and Dong qual for this purpose, the liver and the diet have important roles to play. The liver is meant to breakdown excess estrogen into its component parts and pass them on to the bowels for evacuation through the stool. If the liver is week, it cannot do this well. Thus, the estrogen load would increase as more estrogen molecules from food or water join the estrogen chain band wagon. Even where the liver detoxifies well, but there is not enough fibre in the diet to mop the broken down molecules, these fragments may be re-absorbed in the colon and re-form into full estrogen chains, and the cycle of loading up begins all over, or continues. Estrogenation may increase blood levels of prolaction, an hormone, and this may block ovulation or lead to breast pain or disease, an early signal of which may be fluids or milk nipple discharge from the nipples when a woman is not pregnant or breast-feeding. The liver may be helped with supplements such as Liver Balance, Milk Thistle, Liver Health, Liver Essentials, Carqueja, Amazon Liver Support, and bitters, especially Maria Trebens. Zinc intake may support more output of progesterone, to reduce estrogen dominance. Thyroid supplements, including sea weed such as kelp, may support the elevation of estriol in the estrone/estradiol/ estroil estrogen matrix. Estroil is the least harsh and dangerous of these estrogen fractions. In many cases, plant estrogens have been used to block harsh human estrogen fractions. In this circumstance, estrogen receptors in the body prefer them to human estrogen. The receptors admit this plant hormone and lock out the human equivalent.

That was why plant estrogens such as the proprietary PHYTOESTROGEN were once popular in Nigeria.

here are many infections which may throw a woman’s reproductive system out of gear. As usual, we cannot mention them all in this presentation so, we will limit our discussion to some of the common ones. Women fall prey easily to vaginal infections. Sometimes, water closet water is splashed on their buttock by a heavy, dropping poop and they do not think much of it. They may wipe off the water with toilet paper, but some germs may have hooked up to the buttock skin. These may later find their way to the vagina. It may also happen that they spread their under briefs in a toilet. Water closet flushings may displace air which carry some pathogens on these briefs which are worn without being ironed. Spreading the briefs on the clothes line outside may not help much where dust bring germs and pollen to settle on exposed laundry. By far the largest source of infections, in my view, is through foreplay before sex when, with dirty or infected fingers and nailbeds, men probe the vagina to sexually arouse their partners. Who knows what the man may have touched before that act? Did he pick his nose? Did he remove a strand of beef caught in-between his teeth? Was he from the toilet, or did he drive her straight to an hotel and had picked several germs from the steering wheel?

There are two main causes of vaginal infections:

    -Tiny parasites called Trichomonas

-Bacteria (bacteria vaginosis), arguably the most common source of vaginal discharge.

Trichomonas is caused by trichonomad, a tiny parasite resident in the vagina. Bacteria vaginosis is caused, as the name shows, by bacteria, the symptoms of these infections may include: “Itching, soreness and redress around the vagina or anus”. The vagina may discharge a green or yellow substance with a fishy smell, especially after sexual intercourse, and there may be a burning sensation during urination. There may be pain during intercourse as the micro-organisms may have eroded the cornifed cells of the vagina which protect underlying nerves and blood vessels.

In trichonomad infections, the green or yellow discharge with fishy odour is frothy. If these vaginal infections are not promptly treated they may migrate to the pelvis, where reproduction organs such as the uterus, fallopian tube and ovaries are located. Here they may cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), an umbrella name for any inflammation of the organs in this region. PID symptoms may include foul-smelling vaginal discharge, fever, pain in the lower abdomen, bleeding in-between periods, back pain, pain during sexual intercourse, frequent urination.

It is important that these infections, like that of Candida albilans, a yeast or fungus, be treated promptly, as the parasites may be a cause of tubal blockage or ovarian problems from which many women suffer. In addressing this question, it must be borne in mind that a possible cause of PID is alkalisation of the vagina. The vagina is supposed to be slightly acidic to prevent germs making it a ready habitat. The vagina is supposed, also, to house a good population of friendly bacteria. These bacteria literally eat up unfriendly bacteria to make them less active. But in many women, the vagina is either too acidic or too alkaline.

An over acidic vagina will kill sperm which thrive in alkaline environment. Semen is alkaline, which is why sperm thrive in it. The introduction of semen too frequently into the vagina, even by a woman’s husband and, therefore, legitimate sexual partner, may make her vagina become alkaline in over time. The alkalinity may be the source of infections of an unprotected vagina. Frequent sex with same sexual partner would, therefore appear unnatural and unhealthy. I observed while rearing pigs, rabbits and native chicken that the females agreed to mate with the males only when they were on “heat”. A female pig (sow) brought a male pig (boar) when she was not on heat, would fight the boar to death and even eat up or bite its penis. The rabbit would do the same. Only human females agree to sex any minute or hour of the day irrespective of whether her time of the cycle permits it. It is intriguing that if there is no boar in a pen when a sow is on “heat”, she would break through the pen in search of a boar elsewhere. These facts have to be remembered when a PID is being treated. In the treatment of PIDs, vitamins and minerals are foundational remedies. Vitamin C helps boost immunity and supports formation of collagen.

  • UN, others seek end to violence against female children

The International Day of Girl-Child 2014 was marked last Saturday across the world, reports ADEBISI ONANUGA

The future of the girl-child was the subject of discussion at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos to mark this year’s International Day of Girl-Child.

The event which held at the Assemblies of God Church, Lagos District, Adenubi Close, off Toyin Street, Ikeja was organised by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), Lagos in collaboration with International Charitable Initiative for Girl-Child and Woman Development Foundation (ICI-GWODEF) and Missionettes Department of the Assemblies of God, Lagos District.

It had the theme: “Empowering Adolscents Girls: Ending the Cycle of Violence.”

As the issue of the girl child continues to be at the fore of discussion, the Secretary General of the United Nations(UN), Mr. Bank Ki Moon urged governments to take action to end all forms of violence against girls in all parts of the world.Ki Moon, whose keynote address to the world was delivered in Nigeria by the Senior Public Information Officer, Envera Selimovic, emphasised that there was need to create a world where violence against women and girls is never tolerated and girls are empowered to reach their full potentials.

“To end this cycle of violence against adolescent girls, we must go beyond raising awareness and take action to equip girls with knowledge, skills, resources and power to determine their own path of life.

“We must provide them with safe transport, access to sources of energy and water, quality health services and supportive environments that will allow them to thrive”, he stated.

The UN Secretary General lamented that “all over the world, an alarming number of adolescent girls are assaulted, beaten, raped, mutilated and even murdered.”

“The threat of violence at the hands of family members, partners, teachers and peers grossly violates their rights, diminishes their power and suppresses their potential”.

He noted that a culture of impunity allows violence against adolescent girls to continue unabated.

He counseled leaders across the world that as they define their post-2015 development framework and review progess achieved under the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, how to end gender violence and promote the empowerment of girls and women must be at the heart of global agenda.

Founder, ICI-GWODEF, Mrs. Helen Ibeji in her address, urged the Federal Government to hasten up and ensure that the Chibog girls are returned to their families safely.

“When they are finally back, government should set up mechanisms for rehabilitation of these girls into the society”, Ibeji said.

The founder of the ICI-GWODEF counseled parents, guardians, care givers to give more opportunities to their girls so that they will achieve their goals in life.

She also urged school authorities not to encourage violence in and around schools, adding that school related gender-related violence is a human rights issue and also a barrier to learning.

As they join the world to celebrate the day, Ibeji urged everybody to bear in mind that the life of the girl-child of today is the nation’s future adding, “she being an asset of inestimable value should be treated well just like other children.”

She announced that a book, “Girl- Child Education in Nigeria: The Legal Perspective” which was authored and published by the foundation has been approved by the Lagos State government during the 2014 book review for use of secondary school students.

  • Teen female suicide bombers keep Kano residents in perpetual fear

Teen female suicide bombers keep Kano residents in perpetual fear

The dream of every student of a tertiary institution is to see his or her name on the notice board as one of those confirmed by the authorities of the affected school to have scaled all the hurdles and eligible to be awarded a certificate. That, of course, was the thought that dominated the mind of Nurudeen Deneji (43) after he had completed his assignments for Higher National Diploma (HND) in Public Administration at Kano State Polytechnic.

Indeed, Nurudeen’s name appeared on the list and he was in high spirit penultimate Wednesday as new graduates of the polytechnic gathered to check their names on the call-up list for the mandatory one-year national service otherwise called the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC). It turned out that fate would later that day play a cruel one on Nurudeen.

A female teen suicide bomber sneaked into the sizeable crowd of fresh graduates and detonated a bomb that killed no fewer than three of them and injured seven others, according to police figures. Nurudeen was one of the deceased victims. The 43-year-old indigene of Kano city left behind a young wife and five children. His first child, Najib, had just clocked seven years.

Describing Nurudeen as peace-loving, amiable, easy-going and generous, his elder brother, Alhaji Ibrahim Ado Deneji, a senior reporter with Radio Kano, said: “I feel very sad about his death. But what I believe is that life is a matter of destiny. We come into the world through the will of Allah, and through His will we go. I believe that Nurudeen’s death was predestined.

“We have lost a great brother who was determined to excel in life, but God knows the best. God giveth and God taketh. His dream was to live a peaceful, comfortable and godly life with his family, but now, death has snatched him away through a very tragic means.

“He left behind a wife and five children. Only God can take care of those he has left behind.”

Speaking to newsmen at the scene of the incident, the Kano State Commissioner of Police, Aderenle Shinaba, was soaked with emotion as he condemned the act.

Shinaba said: ”We are in very difficult times; a situation that is assuming a new dimension of suicide bombing in the state. The one that has just happened at the administrative block of Kano State Polytechnic on Bayero University Kano Road is frightening.

“The incident occurred at about 3:30 pm. The situation calls for vigilance on the part of every one of us because we have tried as much as possible to deploy police officers in every strategic location.

”So, in these critical times, what is required is intelligence and vigilance on the part of everybody. Even when we have policemen everywhere, we require information as well as the vigilance of every one of us. A situation where somebody is carrying explosives, what business does such a person have with graduates who had assembled to check their postings for the Batch A of the NYSC?

“It is disheartening to note that when you see somebody around, who is looking like a primary or secondary school student, disguise in the customary hijab, you begin to fret.

“We have been telling people about female teenage suicide bombers; a situation that calls for law enforcement agencies to be on the alert.

“We must now set sentiments and religion aside and watch out always for hijab-wearing female suicide bombers. We must face the reality of tackling the danger headlong so as to avoid future occurrences.”

The Kano State Polytechnic incident was not the first time that female suicide bombers would terrorise the ancient city. On Monday, July 28, a female suicide bomber killed three persons at the NNPC Mega Station at Hotoro quarters. The suicide bomber joined the kerosene queue at the station and detonated the bomb minutes later.

The Kano State Commissioner of Police, Adenerele Tasheed Shinaba, confirmed the blast, saying that three persons were killed while 10 others were injured. On the same day, another female suicide bomber hit Zoo Road, near Kano International Trade Fair complex. Although the 19-year-old female bomber killed herself in the process, six innocent Nigerians sustained various degrees of injuries.

According to eyewitness account, the female suicide bomber dressed in hijab got to the gate of the trade fair complex, but as she tried to gain entry, security men at the gate insisted that she must be frisked. In the process, she detonated the bomb and blew herself. Two Police men were among those who got injured in the incident.

Before the Monday tragedy, Sunday, July 27, had left its own footprints in the sands of terrorism in Kano. In a suicide bombing attack, which occurred in Kofar Nasarawa area of the city, a female bomber, in an attempt to lure some security men who were stationed by the North West gate with Sallah food, ended up blowing herself up.

It was gathered that the female suicide bomber arrived the scene at about 12:30 pm and told the security operatives that she had brought Sallah food for them. The security men, however, suspected a foul play on account of the female bomber’s apparent desperation.

The securitymen, it was further gathered, took to their heels when they noticed that the female bomber was fast advancing towards them as they threatened to gun her down. However, luck ran out on her as the bomb she concealed in her hijab exploded and consumed her.

That same Sunday, St. Charles Catholic Church, located on Zungeru Road, Normansland in Sabon Gari area of Kano, witnessed a heavy blast that claimed the lives of seven worshippers and left 16 persons injured. Three suspects, including a cripple, were arrested.

At about 1:29 pm, according to an eyewitness account, the suspected terrorists had laid siege at a primary school adjacent to St Charles Catholic Church on Zungeru Road, from where they hauled the explosives at the unsuspecting worshippers. It was further gathered that the explosives were thrown through the windows of the school on the innocent worshippers who had just concluded their Sunday service and were departing the premises to their respective homes.

According to sources, the deceased victims included a man identified as Ugochukwu Okoli (32), his wife and maid, who had gone to the church for thanksgiving.

Briefing reporters at the scene of the bomb attack, Shinaba said the suspects had gone to a church on Zungeru Road where they hid themselves in a primary school close to the church and threw explosives on the unsuspecting worshippers, leaving no fewer than five people dead and eight injured, while three suspects were arrested.

The Catholic Bishop of Kano, Bishop John Namanza, condemned the attack on his church members, describing it as uncalled for. Although he commended the security operatives for their response, he lamented that it was belated despite the early information passed to them that the church was a target.

He therefore called on security agents and the state government to beef up security around the vicinity.

  • Female entrepreneurs charting a new future

Female entrepreneurs charting a new future

A group of female entrepreneurs under the umbrella of the Association of Women in Business network have been looking at ways to make access to credit easy for women all over the country.

At a recent forum which took place at NECA house, Lagos the Coordinator of the project Titilola Adisa talked about the activities of the organization and how it had reached out to stakeholders in the past few months in order to chart a new future for female entrepreneurs.

Also speaking at the forum was Toki Mabogunje who took time to give graphic details of the hurdles women face trying to get loans and other credit facilities. She also talked about how the women can convert these challenges to opportunities and make life easy for female entrepreneurs.

Others speakers include Mrs. Omowunmi Omotosho,Country director of CIPE,  Mrs. Fayo Williams of NNEW and Chief Mrs. Bisi Ogunleye of the Country Women Association  of Nigeria (COWAN).

Apart from the speakers participants also took time to identify some of the challenges they face while trying to access credit from banks and other financial institutions across the country.

The women therefore called on the Federal government to, “put in place gender friendly policies and low interest rates for SME’s that are owned by women. This should be enacted in the constitution as well as a special policy to encourage female farmers”, Adisa says.

She adds that: “Government policies should be reviewed periodically and regular update of SME policies should be communicated to stakeholders. This can be done with proper information dissemination. We also believe that there is a need to introduce long term loans because most of the projects are long term. It would also be good for our government to look at multiple taxation”.

The participants at the events took a look at what financial institutions could do to make a difference. “There must be gender friendly criteria for women to access the loans. In addition the banks need to make all the terms and conditions known from the onset. It is also important for them to make use of the existing association as guarantors”.

13 residents die in Yobe attacks

Three die as female bombers hit school

A 10-year-old girl with explosives strapped on to her body has been arrested, a government official said.

Hadiza Musa was arrested along with another girl and a male, Iliya Dahiru. They were all wired up with explosives,  travelling in a car at night on Zaria Road in Tundun Wada, Funtua, Katsina State. The arrests were made on Tuesday night.

National Information Centre Coordinator Mike Omeri, who is also the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), broke the news yesterday in Abuja, saying it was an indication that those behind women bombers are not using the abducted Chibok girls as being speculated.

As Omeri spoke in Abuja a female suicide bomber struck in Kano, killing three students at the Kano Polytechnic.

Two mosques were attacked on Tuesday in Potiskum, Yobe State’s commercial city, by suicide bombers, killing 13 worshippers. It was the second attack in two days in the state. An earlier attacked led to the death of eight people. The Kakarfo bridge linking Yobe to Borno and Adamawa states was blown up.

Omeri said: “The three suspects were arrested in a Honda CRV car, when they were directed to disembar for security checks, 10-year-old Hadiza was discovered to have been strapped with an explosive belt and Iliya and Zainab made an attempt to escape with the car, but were later blocked and subsequently arrested after which the police successfully unstrapped the explosives.”

Police spokesman Frank Mba said the trend of female bombers is on the increase due to the notion that women are not properly searched.

“The use of female suicide bombers is not totally new; there is increase in their use now since women raise fewer suspicion, unlike the male. Women don’t like male security operatives to frisk or check them. We will begin to see more security operatives as their use increases, “he said

Mba urged parents and local governments chairmen to assist in curbing the use of young girls for hawking as most of them are now being lured into suicide bombing.
