FG says N1 trillion needed annually to sustain school feeding programme

The federal government has revealed that an estimated N1 trillion is required annually to effectively implement the National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP).

This disclosure was made by the Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Tanko Sununu, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on the relaunch and expansion of the Renewed Hope National Home-Grown School Feeding Programme (RH-NHGSFP).

According to a statement by Attari Hope, Head of Communication and Public Relations at the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA), Dr. Sununu emphasized that between N900 billion and N1 trillion would be needed each year to provide nutritious meals to pupils in primary grades 1 to 3, with a target of three meals per week.

He stressed the importance of securing diverse funding sources beyond federal allocations, underscoring the need for collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the programme’s sustainability and impact.

Also speaking at the event, the national coordinator and CEO of NSIPA, Badamasi Lawal, outlined possible funding channels, including presidential backing, contributions from international donors, support from key stakeholders, and a proposed allocation of 5 per cent from recovered repatriated funds.

Dr. Badamasi stated, “As stakeholders, your technical expertise, strategic insights, and financial support are invaluable. Through this engagement, we aim to identify collaborative pathways that will strengthen and sustain the programme’s goals in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals—particularly in eradicating hunger, ensuring quality education, and alleviating poverty.”

He explained that the RH-NHGSFP embodies the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, whose agenda seeks to address critical national challenges through inclusive, people-centred solutions.

“Through this programme, we will tackle malnutrition, improve school attendance, empower smallholder farmers, and stimulate local economies—one nutritious meal at a time”.

He also said the enhanced model of the programme promises improved efficiency, transparency, inclusiveness, and measurable impact.

“We hope that it will not only serve as a national success story but also as a model for other countries seeking sustainable school feeding systems.”

FG vows to track project implementation by regional development commissions

The federal government on Thursday said it would track all projects so far implemented by the North East Development Commission (NEDC) and other Development Commissions recently established by the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

The government warned against a relapse to the era of abandoned projects across the country, insisting that it would establish a mechanism to track projects that have been implemented to ensure that they aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President.

The Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Mamman disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the Management Board of the NEDC, and chaired by Major Gen. Paul Tarfa (rtd).

Mamman said government would track implementation of projects by the seven Development Commissions under the Ministry to ensure that they deliver the mandate to address poverty and improving the living standards of the rural areas.

He said besides granting autonomy to the local government councils, the establishment of Development Commissions in all the geo-political zones of the country was aimed at ensuring accelerated development in the states and local governments.

“Our major focus and commitment would be to ensure that you deliver well on the implementation of projects. Nigerians focus more on this Ministry than others because they are expecting much in terms of infrastructure and other social amenities.

“Our role is to ensure that you succeed and not to suffocate you. You should focus on projects that you can implement within two to three years, complete them, and call Mr President to come and commission them. So the Ministry will monitor and track progress of works and ensure that we do not have abandoned projects anywhere,” the Minister said.

The Minister who was flanked by his Minister of State, Alhaji Uba Ahmed Ahmadu and the Permanent Secretary at the meeting, commended the NEDC for procurement of over 10,000 vehicles for road transportation in the Northeast and the plan to provide MIR scanning machines for hospitals in the six states of the zone.

The Chairman of the Board of NEDC, Major Gen. Tarfa (rtd) expressed the commitment of the commission to fulfil its mandate in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu.

Gen. Tarfa said the Board and Management of the NEDC would work in unity and deepen collaboration with the Ministry to contribute meaningfully to the restoration of infrastructure damaged by insurgent activities in the Northeast.

The Managing Director of the Commission, Alhaji Mohammed Alkali, said the meeting was aimed at providing updates on the activities of the NEDC to the Ministers and officials of the Ministry, stressing that the NEDC remained committed to its constitutional mandate of recovery and rehabilitation of infrastructures in the Northeast region.

He said that when the Master Plan for the programmes of NEDC was developed based on four major phases and 11 pillars, the estimated budget was around 80 billion dollars.

He added that with the present realities, the estimates and Master Plan called for review as the NEDC had embarked on multiple projects in the region to bring about quick relief and recovery to the people.

The NEDC boss stated that with about 529 different projects currently going on in the six states of the North-East region, the NEDC planned to Create Centres of Excellence in health and education sectors and establish rail, airline motor vehicle transportation systems to connect the states and local governments in the zone for ease of doing businesses.

Gani Adams urges FG to tackle insecurity in Benue, Plateau, Ondo

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams, has called on the Nigerian government under President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the worsening security situation in Benue, Plateau, and Ondo states.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2025 Eledumare Festival in Lagos, Adams condemned the recent spate of killings and kidnappings allegedly perpetrated by armed herders in the affected states.

He warned that continued inaction from the federal government would further threaten national stability and economic prospects.

“These insecurity issues go a long way to affect food security, given the important role Benue, Plateau, and Ondo states play in the food production cycle of the nation,” Adams said. “The crisis also gives a sense of instability and discourages foreign investors.”

Adams stressed the urgency of the situation, urging the Federal Government to prioritise the protection of citizens over political interests.

“The government at the centre cannot continue to turn a blind eye to these necessary demands. The time to act is now. We must act decisively in the interest of our people,” he added.

His remarks come amid rising violence across the country. In Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia revealed that at least 598 people have been killed in recent attacks. In Plateau, over 100 lives have been lost in Bokkos and Bassa LGAs, prompting protests led by the Christian Association of Nigeria. Ondo State has also witnessed tragedy, with gunmen killing over 20 farmers in Akure North LGA.

Adams’ comments add to growing public pressure on the Federal Government to restore peace and security across the country.

The federal government has officially launched the Presidential Initiative for the Empowerment of Youth in Agriculture, popularly known as the Green Money Project, at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Ogun State.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Special Assistant to the President on Agriculture, Hon. Abiodun Yinusa, described the initiative as a strategic move to unlock Nigeria’s vast agricultural potential by actively involving young people in the sector.

He said the project aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on food security and aims to complement existing efforts by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

Yinusa emphasised the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to drive youth participation and innovation in agriculture.

Highlighting the link between the country’s key challenges—unemployment, poverty, and food insecurity—and the underutilization of agriculture by the youth, Yinusa reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda to empower Nigerian youth to lead a new wave of agricultural transformation.

“In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the national emergency on food security, The Green Money Project aims to empower young Nigerians through agricultural development.

“The project will attract, train, and support youth by equipping them with knowledge in modern agricultural practices, mechanization, climate-smart farming techniques, and digital technologies.

“The initiative will be implemented across selected universities, youth development centers, and technical colleges nationwide, with the overarching goal of contributing to the achievement of zero hunger in Nigeria,” Yinusa said.

FG clarifies role of presidential committee on population, housing census

The federal government has clarified that the newly inaugurated Presidential Committee on Population and Housing Census is a temporary technical body created to identify funding sources and develop strategies to support Nigeria’s long-awaited national census.

This clarification was made by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle in Abuja.

The Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who chairs the committee, explained at the inaugural meeting that its primary task is to provide expert advice on financing, institutional coordination, and timeline development for the upcoming enumeration.

Bagudu said the committee is separate from the National Population Commission (NPC), the statutory body responsible for planning and executing population and housing censuses in Nigeria. According to him, the committee was established as an advisory group to provide targeted guidance in areas relating to census preparation and funding.

The committee, inaugurated last week by President Bola Tinubu, comprises key officials drawn from strategic federal institutions. Members include the Chairman of the NPC, Mr. Nasir Kwarra, who serves as the committee secretary; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun; Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Mohammed Idris; Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zach Adedeji; Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Ms. Bisoye Coker-Odusote; Principal Private Secretary to the President, Mr. Hakeem Muri-Okunola; and the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Administration (Office of the Chief of Staff), Mr. Temilola Adekunle-Johnson.

According to Bagudu, the committee’s mandate is strictly defined by its five-point terms of reference. These include a detailed review of the current census budget to align it with national priorities and fiscal realities, and identification of feasible funding options from domestic and international sources. The committee is also tasked with crafting a comprehensive resource mobilisation strategy involving development partners, international agencies, and the domestic private sector.

In addition, the committee will evaluate NPC’s technical readiness and logistics to identify areas requiring immediate support. It will also recommend a practical and realistic date for the national headcount, taking into account funding, security, and other relevant considerations.

Speaking on the significance of the assignment, Bagudu described the national census as a major sovereign investment that underpins effective policy planning. “A national census is not a routine administrative exercise; it is a sovereign investment in evidence

Plateau indigenes in U.S. decry killings, demand urgent FG to take decisive action

Indigenes of Plateau State living in the United States have condemned the ongoing wave of killings in their home state, calling on the Federal Government to take immediate and decisive action to end the violence.

Operating under the banner of the Plateau State Association (USA) Incorporated (PSA-USA), the group described the persistent attacks as “deliberate acts of terror,” not random incidents or communal clashes.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Dr. Bartholomew Shepkong, the association declared that “enough is enough,” stressing that innocent communities have continued to suffer unchecked attacks.

“The time for words has passed. Now is the time for justice,” the statement read in part, urging the government to confront the crisis with the seriousness it demands and bring perpetrators to justice.

“The association calls for immediate and decisive action from the government of Nigeria and the international community:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must respond with urgency and leadership, demonstrating the political will to bring these atrocities to an end.

“Security agencies must fulfill their constitutional obligation by identifying, arresting, and prosecuting all those responsible.

“The international community must recognise the ongoing violence in Plateau and Nigeria’s Middle Belt as a growing humanitarian and human rights crisis and respond with the seriousness it deserves.

“The memories of the innocent demand more than our grief—they demand our action.

“The Plateau State Association USA, Inc. expresses its profound sorrow and unwavering condemnation of the horrific and inhumane attacks that recently devastated Zike Village in Bassa Local Government Area and multiple communities in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Nigeria.

“These brutal and coordinated assaults resulted in the slaughter of scores of innocent men, women and children; the destruction of homes, and the displacement of entire families.

“These are not isolated incidents or mere ‘clashes’—they are deliberate acts of terror, targeting peaceful communities with impunity.

“We mourn with the families who have lost loved ones, and we stand in unshakable solidarity with all victims and survivors,” it said.

PSA-USA also urged that all displaced persons be supported and guaranteed safe return to their ancestral lands.

According to the group, violence must never be rewarded with land ownership.

“The right to heritage, home and dignity must be restored and protected.

“There can be no healing without justice, and no future without truth,” it added.

The group called on the media practitioners to always be accurate in their reportage by hitting the nail on its head.

It added: “The association also denounced the Nigerian media’s continued misrepresentation of these atrocities as ‘farmer-herder clashes,’ calling it a gross distortion of the reality on the ground.

“Let us be clear—this is not a conflict. It is targeted, coordinated violence. It is ethnic cleansing by another name.

“The media must stop enabling impunity with sanitised

language and start calling this horror what it truly is,” the statement said.

“The association will continue to engage policy makers, diaspora leaders, humanitarian actors, and civil society to ensure that the cries of the oppressed are heard—and acted upon.”

  • FG, IWMI set to tackle looming flood threat, water crisis

FG, IWMI set to tackle looming flood threat, water crisis

The Federal Government in partnership with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and other stakeholders, has intensified efforts to combat the looming threat of flooding and broader water management challenges in 2025.

This commitment was reiterated at the ongoing 6th African Regional Conference on Irrigation and Drainage (ARCID) in Abuja where the Nigerian National Committee of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) gathered experts from the continent and beyond to discuss Africa’s pressing water crises.

IWMI’s Africa Director on Research Impact, Funke Koffi, emphasised the organisation’s role in driving proactive flood management strategies.

She highlighted collaborative efforts with Nigerian institutions to develop predictive tools such as the early warning and anticipatory action platform, known as AWARE. According to her, this platform leverages satellite data to forecast flood events and coordinate timely responses.

“Floods are natural disasters that can be difficult to prevent, but we can certainly prepare for and manage them effectively. Our platform enables relevant agencies to take anticipatory action before floods occur, which helps minimize damage and improves response,” Koffi said.

She further noted that IWMI has been working with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture since 2012 to develop flood prediction tools and promote the use of floodwaters for productive activities like recession agriculture.

IWMI Director General Mark Smith called for an integrated approach to water management, combining technology, policy reform, and inclusive practices.

According to him:“Water can be the catalyst for transformation across the continent. By improving access to water for women, youth, and smallholder farmers, we can raise incomes, improve health outcomes, and create employment opportunities.”

He referenced key African policy frameworks such as the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the African Union’s 2020 Framework for Irrigation Development, which prioritize water conservation, wastewater recycling, and farmer-led irrigation to build resilience in the face of climate change.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, urged African nations to embrace innovative strategies for water and irrigation development.

Declaring the conference open, Tinubu described the theme -“Tackling Irrigation Development and Water Management Crisis in Africa” – as a vital call to action for sustainable agriculture and economic resilience.

“Africa still faces major barriers such as inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, and governance issues. This conference offers a platform to collectively chart a path forward.” Tinubu said.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment under the Renewed Hope Agenda, which includes a National Emergency on Food Security and expanded irrigation infrastructure across more than 3.1 million hectares of irrigable land.

Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, announced the upcoming launch of the Sustainable Power and Irrigation for Nigeria (SPIN) project. The initiative, in collaboration with the World Bank, builds upon the successes of the Transforming Irrigation Management in Nigeria (TRIMING) project, which concluded after over seven years.

“TRIMING delivered transformative results across several states. The SPIN project will address identified gaps and maximize the socio-economic benefits of stored water.” Utsev said.

He moted that under TRIMING, the government completed major irrigation schemes like Dadin-Kowa and Bakolori, achieved 90% progress on the Middle Rima Valley project, and launched interventions in Ondo, Kwara, Benue, Kebbi, Edo, Adamawa, and Oyo States. The initiative also saw the creation of Water Users Associations and farmer management centres to strengthen agricultural value chains.

Utsev revealed that the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) have developed over 153,000 hectares of irrigable land and are undergoing partial commercialization to attract private investment.

He also highlighted the development of a 2025 Flood Outlook and Risk Management Strategy aimed at minimizing the impact of floods on food production.

Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Wilson Jack, called for enhanced intergovernmental collaboration to ensure food security through improved irrigation.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, raised concerns over shrinking farming seasons caused by climate change, stressing the urgency of investing in irrigation.

“Our land is turning to dust. We must act now and empower women and youth at the heart of our agricultural systems,” Zulum said.

President of ICID, Dr. Marco Arcieri, lauded the conference as a turning point in Africa’s efforts to address climate-induced challenges in agriculture and water management.

“This gathering marks the beginning of renewed commitment and collaborative action,” he said. “The future of African agriculture depends on how we respond today.”

Day 1 of the conference climaxed with the launching of the IWMI – “Organizational Growth Strategy 2024-2030 roadmap”

  • FG sets up sub-committee to review impact of U.S. Tariffs

FG sets up sub-committee to review impact of U.S. Tariffs

The federal government through the Economic Management Team (EMT), chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, has inaugurated a sub-committee to conduct a comprehensive review of the economic effects of ongoing international tariff regimes and shifts in global commodity prices.

This initiative comes on the heels of recent trade policy decisions by the United States Government, which imposed a 14 percent tariff on certain Nigerian exports, alongside various tariffs on goods from other countries.

The development has raised concerns within Nigeria’s policy circles about the implications for local exporters and the broader economy.

The newly formed sub-committee comprises representatives from the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning (including the Budget Office of the Federation), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). It has been tasked with a dual mandate.

Firstly, the committee will assess the impact of the U.S. tariffs on Nigerian exports. It is expected to investigate the potential for reduced demand for Nigerian goods in the U.S. market, increased costs for exporters, and broader consequences for value chains connected to these goods. In addition, the team will examine how these tariffs might affect Nigeria’s position in global trade.

Secondly, the sub-committee is to evaluate the implications of fluctuating global commodity prices, with a particular focus on crude oil. As Nigeria’s leading export and a major contributor to public revenue, movements in oil prices hold significant implications for the country’s fiscal health.

The committee will study both the direct effect on revenue streams from crude exports and the knock-on effects across other sectors of the economy—such as inflation, fuel prices, and manufacturing activities dependent on imported inputs.

The overarching objective for setting up the sub-committee is to provide the EMT with detailed, data-backed analysis that will support timely and informed policymaking. The review is expected to serve as the foundation for targeted strategies that shield the economy from external shocks and maximize any emerging opportunities.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance, the sub-committee held its inaugural meeting earlier this week and is working under a tight timeline to present its findings to the full EMT.

During the EMT session convened by Mr. Edun earlier in the week, participants from key ministries and economic agencies convened to analyze the economic implications of the recent policy shifts, especially those relating to international trade. The meeting focused specifically on the new tariff measures by the United States and the accompanying downward trend in global crude oil prices.

While Nigeria’s crude oil has not been directly targeted by the U.S. trade action, the EMT noted that the overall impact on the global trade environment, coupled with the fall in oil prices, requires urgent and sustained analysis.

The work of the sub-committee is expected to influence the next phase of Nigeria’s economic strategy. With ongoing global uncertainties—from geopolitical tensions to protectionist trade policies—the EMT appears to be reinforcing its commitment to responsive and evidence-based economic planning.

The review exercise also signals an important step in anticipating and adapting to shifts in the global economy. By identifying risks and pinpointing areas for policy intervention, the EMT aims to keep Nigeria on a steady economic course in the face of international turbulence.
