FG opposes Dasuki’s request for foreign trip

The Federal Government on Monday urged a Federal High Court in Abuja not to accede to the request by former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, for the release of his travel documents to enable him travel abroad.

Dasuki, a retired Colonel of the Nigerian Army, is standing trial for illegal possession of firearms and money laundering of about N84.6million.

The Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Muhammad Diri told the court on Monday that granting Dasuki’s prayer was injurious to the prosecution, who was planning to bring additional money laundering charges against the ex-NSA.

Diri opposed Dasuki’s application for the release of his passport to enable him to travel to the United Kingdom on health grounds.

“The defendant is also being investigated for money laundering by the security department.

“On this point, I refer your Lordship to paragraph 4 of our counter-affidavit showing that the defendant is also being investigated for other money laundering offences,” Diri said.

Earlier, Dasuki’s lawyer, Joseph Daudu (SAN), argued that the “speculative possibility that more charges will be filed against the defendant” could not be the basis for denying him the opportunity to seek medical attention abroad.

“They (the prosecution) are saying that his travelling out may interfere with the proposed charges,” Daudu said.

FG assures on Owerri Int’l Cargo terminal

The federal government has assured it will expedite actions on completion of an international cargo terminal at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (SMICA) Owerri, in Imo State.

The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Aviation, Hajia Binta Bello, gave the assurance in Owerri while conducting Imo State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, on an inspection tour of the project site.

Bello said the contractors handling the project have been sufficiently mobilised to ensure early completion.

She said the contractors were awaiting arrival of building materials for the super structure of the terminal in the country to commence work on the site.

Bello pointed out the project will facilitate commencement of international air cargo operations to boost economic development in the South – East geo- political zone and other surrounding states.

She informed Okorocha and his entourage that works on the cargo terminal’s foundation has been completed.

She also assured that contractors handling the project will deliver within the agreed timeline.

Okorocha said he was pleased with the extent of development at the cargo terminal and thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for giving approval to the early completion of the project.

  • FG revives 14 assembly plants

Mr. Aminu Jalal, the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), on Tuesday said 14 assembly plants, which existed before the automotive policy, had been revived.

Jalal stated this in Lagos at a stakeholders meeting of the Committee on Implementation of the Nigerian Auto Policy.

He said the policy objective of bringing back the automobile assembly plants had been achieved.

The director-general said that new entrants in the automobile business were also doing well, adding that the council had suspended the issuance of new assembly plant licences.

Jalal said there were plans to partner with a bank to run a vehicle financing scheme to enable Nigerians buy made-in-Nigeria vehicles with ease.

He, however, expressed concern at the huge cost of operating a vehicle assembly plant, saying that the investment stages had been broken down into three.

“The reason why we break the assembly operations into three is that a new vehicle assembly plant is quite expensive to set up.

“If you are setting it up, the minimum you can do will cost you over $50 million (N11 billion) for about 10,000 units per year.

“After about a year, they start with SKD 2 (Semi-Knocked Down), which is a painted body, bringing in the internal and external fittings.

“Then you move to SKD1 where you have a body that is not painted, you have to paint it and so on.

“Then you move to CKD 1 (Completely- Knocked-Down) when you have to weld all the pieces together, paint and do the assembly.

“ That is a transition in 12 months to the next phase,’’ he said.

Jalal, however, said that Innoson Motors had already started doing CKD.

He said Ashok-Leyland buses were CKD while Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN) already had the full complement of investment in CKD and would start CKD in 2016.

Mr. Tokunbo Aromolaran, the Managing Director, Volkswagen of Nigeria Automobiles and Chairman, Nigerian Automobile Manufacturers Association, said it was best for Nigeria to make a start in automobile manufacturing.

He said investment in the industry was expensive in terms of funds and technological needs, adding that Nigeria had done well in building capacity.

“The automobile manufacturing process is capital intensive and a technologically- advanced one.

“You have to start from some point. We would never have been able to start if we did not start in a systematic and segmented way.

“We have taken the first baby step which is establishing the assembly plant.

“There is a lot of technology that is still required to get to the utmost but we would never get there if we never start,’’ Aromolaran said.

He said that for Nigeria to derive the benefit of automobile policy, automobile companies should start manufacturing components.

Aromolaran said the automotive policy would enable Nigerian companies to produce vehicles as done in other parts of world and create jobs for the unemployed.

Mr Cosmas Maduka, the President of Coscharis Motors, said Nigeria had done well by keying into the programme.

He said the gains might be long-term considering the level of patronage and the foreign exchange that would be saved when vehicles were produced locally.

The industrialist urged Nigerians to be patient with the automobile development plan, adding that it would benefit the nation’s economy with time.

Buhari expresses commitment to Ayade’s signature projects

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday expressed the commitment of the Federal Government to the signature projects of Cross River State governor, Prof Ben Ayade, which are the construction of a 260km superhighway and a new deep seaport.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony of the superhighway that will link Calabar to Northern Nigeria, in Obung Village, Akamkpa Local Government Area of the State, Buhari said the road will open a window of opportunity for the people of Cross River State and Nigeria as a whole, as well as reduce travel time.

His words, “That I am here in person underscores the importance the Federal Government attaches to this. It is indeed a significant milestone in the economic and policy of the governor.

“This is the first groundbreaking under my presidency. I commend Ayade and his team for their foresight in conceptualising this project.

“I want to assure you of the commitment of the Federal Government to ensure the completion of the project. I promise I will come back to commission it. I urge the governor to ensure work is done on it quickly.”

Ayade expressed gratitude to the President for his support.

He said, “You said you are for everyone and today you have proven this by your support for us. That is because given the circumstances of our nation and the politics, Cross River State would not have been worthy of being your first port of call. You have shown that you are truly a president.

“The ontological kinetics of the road started with the loss of oil wells, consequent on the loss of Bakassi. The state was reduced to want. It became imperative to reconstruct a new means of production and open a horizon to get teeming young men employed.

“The road will serve as an evacuation corridor for the new deep seaport. The seaport will have a draft of 14 metres and a key wall of 680 meters that will allow for all sizes of vessels to berth.”

The governor said some features of the road, which he described as digital, will include broadband internet connectivity, speed cameras and ambulatory services.

In attendance at the event were governors of Akwa Ibom and Imo States, Udom Emmanuel and Rochas Okorocha respectively.

  • Rivers indigenes commend FG for nominating Amaechi

Rivers indigenes commend FG for nominating Amaechi

Some Rivers indigenes on Monday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for nominating former governor of the state, Chibuike Amaechi as a minister.

Mr. Somiari Ogolo, a Port Harcourt based lawyer told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that Amaechi was competent to serve as a minister.

“ Amaechi worked hard and played a key role in the development of the state, “ he said.

Ogolo said the former governor’s impressive record of performance was still fresh in the minds of Rivers people and Nigeria.

“Amaechi’s nomination as minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by the President is a welcome decision because of his rich experience and performance public service.

“I can say that quality development will be visible in any ministry that he will oversee,” he said.

Ogolo said those opposing the Amaechi`s ministerial nomination were enemies of Rivers state.

Mr. Christian Don-Pedro, a former councillor, Ward 16, in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state, said the people of the Niger Delta would benefit from Amaechi’s appointment as minister.

Don-Pedro said the former governor was very worried that the oil-rich region did not witness any major development under the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Amaechi will definitely attract substantial development to the Niger Delta as a Minister under President Buhari,” he said.

Mr. Charles Jaja, a Port Harcourt-based human rights activist, said majority of Rivers people were happy with the nomination of Amaechi as minister.

“So many Rivers people are comfortable the former governor is nominated to be minister.

“He is a Rivers man that will make the state proud again in any responsibility that will be given to him,” he said.

Mr. Gordon George, a chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, said the people of Niger Delta would no longer wail again with Amaechi as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

George said the former governor was an invaluable asset to the oil-rich region and Nigeria that would bring to bear, his courageous and aggressive hunger for development.

However, latest results from further laboratory test carried out on his remains  were negative  for all known pathogenic viruses, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, said in a statement.

This, according to him, has thrown up the possibility of poisoning or intoxication with a chemical.

  • FG suspends licence issuance for new vehicle assembly plants

The Federal Government has suspended issuance of licence to new vehicle assembly plants.

Mr Aminu Jalal, the Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Friday.

Jalal said that the action was to enable the council to consolidate the country’s vehicle assembly operations and concentrate in developing local content.

He explained that the suspension did not apply to investment in original equipment manufacturing (OEM), adding that applicants for OEM license would not be affected.

Jalal said: “The major objective of the National Automotive Industry Development Plan is to bring back completely knocked down (CKD) automotive assembly and develop local content.

“NADDC is investing over N5 billion to establish automotive test centres that will ensure that the vehicles and components meet international safety and environmental standards.

“The response to the policy so far has exceeded our expectations. The current status of implementation of the policy is that 14 existing assembly plants started assembling new products (cars, SUV, buses, pick-up trucks) in 2014.”

The DG listed some of the 14 plants as Volkswagen of Nigeria (VON), Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, ANAMMCO, Leyland-Busan, NTM and Steyr.

According to him, Nissan, VW, Hyundai, Kia, Honda cars and SUV, Shacman and MAN Trucks, and Ashok-Leyland buses are now assembled in Nigeria.

“Eleven new companies, including Century Auto (Toyota), TATA, Coscharis Auto (FORD, Joylong, Dongfeng) and Dana Motors (Renault) have been given bona-fide manufacturing status and are on track to start assembly operations this year.

“Our emphasis has now shifted to the development of automotive local content.

“Sites for automotive supplier parks in excess of 400 square hectares have been acquired across Nigeria and effort is ongoing to acquire more.”

Jalal said the council was evaluating tenders by global consulting firms with experience in the establishment of industrial parks.

  • Reps urge FG to rehabilitate dilapidated Ondo roads

The House of Representatives on Thursday, urged the Federal Government to rehabilitate two dilapidated roads in Ondo State to curb incessant accidents and loss of lives.

This was sequel to a motion by Rep. Babatunde Kolawole (Ondo-APC), who said that Owo-Iyere-Ipele-Ago, Alao-Owoani-Idoani-Ifira-Sosan-Isua road and Owo-Oba- Ajegunle-Akungba-Iwaro-Oke-Oka-Okhia-Epinmi-Isua road were in deplorable states.

He said the roads were arterial and important to the socio-economic development of the state and its environs.

Kolawale said that the roads also linked the western part of the country to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to him, the roads have deteriorated in the past 20 years as a result of abandonment, thus leading to accidents that have claimed several lives.

Adopting the motion unanimously, the house urged the Federal Ministry of Works to include a proposal for the construction of the roads in the 2016 budget estimates.

It also urged the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to, in the interim rehabilitate the Owo-Iyere-Ipele-Ago, Alao-Owoani-Idoani-Ifira-Sosan-Isua road to facilitate easy movement.

  • Pay FG workers promptly

The non prompt payment of workers at the federal level has been a source of concern for now, hence the urgent need to ameliorate the present hardship they are facing currently.

The lateness in convening the Federal Allocation Account

Committee (FAAC) meeting also contributed to the delay being faced in payment of allocation to the federal, state and local governments across the country.

The prompt payment of all the workers in the country will help to upset the various problems faced by workers in all sectors of the economy.

The various revenue-generating agencies in country should endeavour to remit their income to the federation account to ensure the commencement of a monthly allocation account committee meeting.

The wages of most Nigerian workers can’t meet the needs of ordinary workers in the country, due to inflation and high cost of living.

Hence, the urgent need for all relevant stakeholders to be hasty in ensuring workers in the country get their salaries when due.

The Muslims’ festival of Eidel kabir is coming soon, and workers in the country are not sure they will be paid their salaries before the sallah to enable them purchase their rams and meet other needs of their families at the period of the festival.

ICPC arrests lawyer for defrauding FG

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has said it arrested a lawyer, Mr Adeola Adeyanju, for allegedly defrauding the Federal Government of N928 million.

The commission made the disclosure on Tuesday in Lagos in its recent in-house news bulletin.

The bulletin said that the suspect allegedly forged the payment mandate of the Ministry of Environment.

The commission, according to the bulletin, alleged that the suspect moved the said amount from First City Monument Bank where the money had been domiciled with his Zenith Bank’s personal account.

“On the same day the money hit his account, he again moved it to a Bureau de Change’s account where the money was converted and paid to him in dollars,’’ it said.

It said the suspect’s counsel, Mr Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), had earlier sought for the enforcement of his client’s fundamental human rights from an Abuja High Court with an application for bail award of N100 million as damages.

Ikpeazu, according to the anti-graft bulletin, claimed that the detention of his client was a violation of his human rights, stressing that the suspect was suffering from a strangulated hernia.

The bulletin said the commission’s counsel, Mr Osuobeni Akpors, who opposed the bail application, noted that the suspect had allegedly been a serial offender and that if granted bail, might abscond.

Akpors further stated that the suspect had earlier been allegedly convicted in another High Court in a suit number FCT/CR/14/04, stressing that he had shown no sign of repentance.

“Based on the facts before the trial judge, the suspect was denied bail,’’ the commission added.
