George hunts for Super Eagles’ victory against Benin

Head Coach  Finidi George has admitted that the Super Eagles were condemned to win their 2026  FIFA World Cup Group C qualifier against Republic of  Benin today in Abidjan.

“ We are going  to approach the game with all seriousness; the match against South Africa is gone, George said at his press briefing. “We have learnt from it and we just have to get ourselves to have that fantastic second half that we had (against South Africa) and if we can start that way, we would have a chance.”

Lying in a strange fifth place in the six-team Group C after three rounds of matches, the Super Eagles know only a win against the Cheetahs this evening will keep them seriously in the hunt for a place at the World Cup finals to be jointly hosted by Canada, USA and Mexico in two years’ time.

“We’re very much aware of why we are here and what we have to do,” George was quoted as saying as the Super Eagles contingent landed earlier  in Abidjan. “The players want to go to the World Cup and they have resolved to give their all in every game going forward. We had our opportunities against South Africa on Friday and should have won, but that is gone and we face another challenge now.

“We have resolved not to look too far ahead in this race. The essence is to take it one match at a time. Benin Republic is in our front now, and we must deal with that squarely.”

With only three points from their first three matches of the campaign, and going up against the Cheetahs who boast four points, the Eagles know they must fire on all cylinders and recreate the happy moments of the AFCON at the Stade Felix Houphouet-Boigny – where they won all three matches played there during the Africa Cup of Nations finals earlier in the year.

Gabonese official Pierre Ghislain Atcho will be the referee for today’s encounter that commences at 4pm CIV time (5pm in Nigeria).

Ethiopian officials Temesgin Samuel Atango and Tigle Gizlaw Belachew will serve as assistant referees 1 and 2, while Cameroonian Antoine Max Effa Essouma will be fourth official.

Djamel Haimoudi from Algeria will be the referee assessor, with Burkinabe David Yameogo as commissioner and Ivorian Atte Claude Elloh as security officer.

The Super Eagles’ delegation to Abidjan  led by President of Nigeria Football Federation, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, included 23 players, technical and administrative officials, a few members of the NFF Executive Committee and Management, and a couple of media representatives. They flew aboard a chartered ValueJet aircraft from the Obong Victor Attah Airport in Uyo and landed at the Aeroport Felix Houphouet-Boigny at noon on Sunday.

FIFA World Cup 26: Rohr dreams of shock defeats of  Rwanda, Nigeria

Republic of Benin’s German coach Gernot Rohr has enthused  about  the capability of his wards  to upstage  2026 FIFA World  Cup  African Zone Group C leaders Rwanda as The Cheetahs host the Amavubi on their adopted home ground  at the Felix Houphouet  Boigny  Stadium in Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire)  ahead  of their MatchDay 4 clash at the me venue  on Monday against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

After the opening  two matches of the qualifiers, Rwanda currently top the table on four points  and closely followed by three-point South Africa  while  Nigeria is third  with two points same as Lesotho  and Zimbabwe  with Benin occupying the rear of the group with just a point.

But Rohr who qualified  Nigeria to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup  is yet again  dreaming  with the possibility of upstaging the apple cart  in  Group C with  The Cheetahs.

“  We are already here in Abidjan  to prepare our game against Rwanda which is still the leader in our group with four points ,”  the vastly-travelled  Rohr who will be  71 on June 28, told NationSport from Abidjan. “Though we have one point , we would like to win this match of course so that we can be in front of them .

“ Sure we know it won’t be easy because  they have a good team  and we are going to miss one of our best  players, striker  Andreas Hountondji   but I think we are going to have a good team.”

The former Bayern Munich further  said The Cheetahs  would not be encumbered  with the  fact that they will be playing ‘home away from  home’ after  CAF rendered  their Cotonou ground unplayable.

“Though we are far away from Cotonou because our stadium has not been allowed to receive matches,  we  are trying to feel at home here  and we would have a good condition to play in this wonderful stadium,”  Rohr who had previously coached in Niger, Burkina Faso and Gabon equally said.

“ Our team is well motivated  and we still have a little chance to go to the World Cup  and this is also a dream for a country such as Benin.

“ We need dreams  and we can then see what can happen in the second match .

“ But I will be happy to see my friends from Nigeria,“ added the former Bordeaux manager who had  a five-year stint  between  2016 and 2021 with the Super Eagles.

Bassey, Onuachu, 3 others  swell camp

The atmosphere around the camp of African vice champions Nigeria has livened up even more as five players who were initially stranded in two different parts of the country as a result of the nationwide strike were ferried into Uyo yesterday.

Defenders Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel and Calvin Bassey, alongside midfielder Frank Onyeka and forward Paul Onuachu landed at the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo just after noon aboard a private jet arranged by the Nigeria Football Federation, and were driven to the team’s Ibom Hotel and Resorts to meet up with team mates in time for lunch.

The arrival of the quintet who later trained  with the rest of the squad during the  closed-door training  in the evening,   brought the tally of players in camp to 20, three days to the Day 3 qualifying battle with the Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in the Akwa Ibom capital.

“ The Super Eagles moments  ago rounded off  their Tuesday’s evening training session  with 20 players. The five latest arrivals trained  extra,” Team Media Officer (TMO) Promise Efoghe  said .

Nigeria and South Africa go toe-to-toe in a rematch of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations first semi-final, which the Super Eagles trumped 4-2 after penalty shootout at the Stade de la Paix in Bouake.

Three-time African champions Nigeria, who have reached the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup on three occasions, missed out on the last house-party in Qatar, and after a sluggish start to the qualifiers, need all three points on offer to be in strong contention for the only ticket from Group C as the campaign drags on.

Rwanda are surprise leaders of the pool after two matchdays, on four points, with South Africa on three and Nigeria on two.

The 10-match series will end in October next year, with winners of the nine groups qualifying automatically for the finals in Canada, USA and Mexico.

The best four second-placed teams in all nine groups will contest a CAF Play-off Tournament, with the winner going ahead to contest a FIFA Play-off Tournament for another slot.

Nigeria have secured only  two points  from their opening two matches  following an identical 1-1  draw  at home against Lesotho  and away to Zimbabwe last November. “Barring any last minute  changes, the Super Eagles for  the world Cup qualifiers  should be released next week,”  a reliable source at the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) told NationSports.

  • The Last Two Times Nigeria Didn’t Qualify for the FIFA World Cup

The Last Two Times Nigeria Didn’t Qualify for the FIFA World Cup

It feels as though the conclusion to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was just yesterday. The competition was a spectacle and its conclusion was seemingly written in the stars. Lionel Messi conjured up one last hurrah at the ripe old age of 36 to lead his beloved Argentina to glory at the fifth time of asking, securing his legacy as the greatest player that’s ever lived in the process. However, the truth is that that glorious showdown in Qatar took place almost 18 months ago, and attention has already turned toward the 2026 showdown in North America.

As the qualifying campaigns get underway, Nigeria already find themselves navigating through troubled waters. The Super Eagles have had a less-than-ideal start to their qualifying campaign, only managing a draw in their first two games. They first stumbled against lowly Lesotho, with defender Semi Ajayi netting a late equaliser to spare his side’s blushes. They then had to find another late equaliser through Kelechi Iheanacho to salvage a draw on the road in Zimbabwe.

Even though the next World Cup is over two years away, bookies are already providing odds and offers on the tournament, such as William Hill free bets, which offers bonuses for new players. They have made back-to-back finalists France the early 11/2 favourites. But for the Super Eagles, they will simply be aiming to qualify for the tournament, never mind win it.

Here are the last two times Nigeria failed in their quest for qualification.

    2022 FIFA World Cup

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was a tournament that witnessed many surprises and upsets. The eventual champion Argentina lost their opening game to Saudi Arabia, while Belgium and their so-called golden generation were eliminated in the group stages. But no heartache was felt more deeply than the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify.

Nigeria made it to the third round and had to secure victory against an out-of-form Ghana over two legs in order to qualify. The first leg ended in a goalless draw in Kumasi, setting the stage for a dramatic second leg in Lagos. Despite playing on home soil and having the support of thousands of fans, the Super Eagles were unable to secure the victory they desperately needed.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with Ghana qualifying on away goals thanks to an equaliser from Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey. This result was a bitter pill to swallow for the Lagos faithful, who had high hopes for their team. Instead, they took to the pitch to let their players know just how badly they had let them down, resulting in some very unsavoury scenes.

    2006 FIFA World Cup

The 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany was another occasion when the Super Eagles were conspicuously absent. They had qualified for the last three tournaments on the spin, even reaching the Round of 16 in both 1994 and 1998. After being drawn into a relatively simple-looking group against Angola, Zimbabwe and Rwanda, it looked as if the Super Eagles would comfortably progress. But, as always, the beautiful game showed its unpredictability.

The pivotal moment came in a head-to-head encounter with Angola. Nigeria needed a victory to maintain their lead in the group, but the match ended in a draw. This result, coupled with Angola’s consistent performances, meant that the Super Eagles missed out on qualification by the narrowest of margins. Despite finishing level on points with the Angolans and having a superior goal difference, Nigeria missed out on the tournament as a result of Manucho and co. having a better head-to-head record, securing one win and one draw.

The failure to qualify for the 2006 World Cup had significant implications for Nigerian football. It led to a period of reflection and restructuring, with an emphasis on developing young talent and improving the domestic football infrastructure. And the sweeping changes had the desired effect. The Super Eagles went on to qualify for the next three tournaments on the spin, reaching the second round once again in Brazil in 2014.

  • Immortalise my son, Sam Okwaraji’s mum tells FG

Mother of late Super Eagles midfielder, Sam Okwaraji, has asked the federal government and other relevant authorities to immortalise him to encourage national sacrifice.

Ma Janet Okwaraji, who is in her 90s, spoke when a delegation from a non-governmental organisation,  The Compassionate Heart led by Rev Fr Frankline Muo visited her residence in Abakpa, Enugu state to celebrate the 2019 mother’s day with her.

The aging woman regretted 30 years after her son slumped and died on active duty for the country, nothing had been done to appreciate the selfless sacrifice.

Okwaraji slumped and died while playing for the Super Eagles against Angola at the National Stadium, Lagos in a FIFA World Cup qualifier that ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria on August 12, 1989.

Ma Okwaraji stated her late son loved the country and did all within his ability to contribute to its growth.

She said:  “He excelled as a young boy and combined study with football to the point of pursuing a doctorate degree programme in Germany before the unfortunate incident that claimed his life.”

She stated that she decided to open a school in memory of the late footballer after waiting on the government to “immortalise him to no avail’ pointing out she would always remember him “for being a good and hard- working boy”

Rev Fr. Muo, stated the organization decided to identify with the old woman because “Sam would have celebrated his mother on mother’s day if he were alive”.

He said though his stay on earth was short-lived, “he left indelible footmarks”.

“I am appealing to the government and all and sundry not to abandon his family.

“Sam left his base overseas to play for the country thirty years ago and died while doing this national assignment.

“Since his death, nothing has happened to show to reciprocate this gesture. He was not doing it for money because, he came each time he was invited to play and return to base.

“So we believe that the greatest love we can show to him is to immortalise him,” he said.

They presented food items and cash to Madam Okwaraji, which they said was their little way to assist the family to look after her at her old age, promising that they would continue to identify with the family.

Oko Emmanuel, who is the Coordinator of Sam Okwaraji Remembrance, said he was touched on returning to Nigeria last year to discover where Madam Okwaraji was living, stressing that he had visited the tomb of the late footballer in Umudioka Orlu, Imo state to discover it had been abandoned.

He stated his group had taken it upon themselves to mobilise support to uplift the living standard of the mother and her family, insisting that there was need to take the family into account to encourage patriotism in the country.
