  • Nnacheta on plans to immortalise Nigeria’s famous boys

Nigerians will not forget in hurry the glory and honour that the USA 1994 Super Eagles’ squad brought to the country. The team achieved many firsts including being the first team ever to qualify for finals of the FIFA World Cup; the first to win the Africa Cup of Nations away from home and the first African team to be rated fifth in the monthly FIFA World rankings. OLALEKAN OKUSAN writes on the plans to celebrate the feat of the Coach Clement Westerhof-tutored side as probably the most enduring Nigerian brand since independence.

It is a known fact that the 1994 Super Eagles’ squad remains Nigeria’s most successful national football team at the senior level.

A team put together by Dutch coach Clemens Westerhof went on to become the toast of the world with their gallantry by winning the Tunisia 1994 AFCON en route to the USA’94 World Cup.

Some members of the team have also become the national coaches of the Super Eagles with the late Stephen Keshi and Samson Siasia as shining examples of the team.

Being the captain of the team that won the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia, Keshi as Super Eagles’ coach tutored the team that claimed the 2015 AFCON in South Africa. Siasia, on his part, has been referred to as ‘World Cup Coach’ after he led the country’s Under-20 team to the final of the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Holland. He was also in charge of the Dream Team that finished second at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in China as well as the bronze medal-winning team of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games in Brazil.

However, some members of this formidable squad have left the stage while others soldier on with their lives in various facets of life.

Meanwhile, the first member of the team to pass on was Uche Okafor in 2011 and he was reportedly found hanging at his Dallas, Texas, home and a preliminary report by the Dallas police ruled that the easy-going defender unfortunately committed suicide.

In 2012, Rashidi Yekini who passed on was reported to be ill for an extended period of time. He died in Ibadan on 4th May  2012 at 48 and was buried at his residence in Ira, Kwara State.

Also, midfielder Thompson Oliha died of reported complications from malaria on June 2013. Goalkeeper Wilfred Agbonavbare in January 2015 was reported to be suffering from cancer, and he subsequently underwent treatment at the Hospital Universitario Príncipe de Asturias in Alcalá de Henares in Spain. But he succumbed to the disease three days later at 48.

Skipper Stephen Okechukwu Keshi fondly called the “Big Boss” was a Nigerian football defender turned coach who alongside Egypt’s Mahmoud El-Gohary were the only two people to have won the Africa Cup of Nations as players and coaches. Keshi, whose wife of 33 years, Kate, died on 10 December 2015, after battling cancer for three years, died on 8th June 2016 in Benin City, after suffering from a cardiac arrest, at 54.

Beyond the departed members of the 1994 squad, the team is generally considered as the finest collection of players ever assembled in the green and white colours of Nigerian and a plan is now in the offing to mark the silver jubilee of the team’s feat.

A former vice chairman of the defunct Nigeria Football Association (NFA), Tony Nnacheta, said there has not been any team, anywhere in the world, recognised like the 1994 Super Eagles squad.

“The Super Eagles’ class of 1994 is the most enduring Nigerian brand since independence; first Nigerian team to qualify for the finals of FIFA World Cup; first Nigerian team to win the African Nations Cup away from home, and the first African team to be rated 5th in FIFA world ranking,” he said.

He added: “’The class of ’94’ details and describes the historic coming of age of Nigerian football, starting from Maroc ’89 and encompassing the African Nations Cup Algeria ’90, Senegal ’92, climaxing in the golden years of the Eagles with brilliant achievements in Tunisia 94, World Cup USA 94, culminating in the Olympics ’96 football gold in Atlanta.”

Nnacheta said: “These triumphs brought joy and rare unity to the entire nation. It instilled a sense of pride among all Nigerians from all walks of life and to the Black Diaspora worldwide.”

On why the celebration is unique, Nnacheta said: “It aims at celebrating a momentous era in Nigerian football till date; the 25th anniversary of yet-unequalled excellence; 25 years of vivid evidence that Nigeria could attain great heights with the resources we have.”

Staging the celebration, to Nnacheta, was meant to inspire the younger generation. “We want to provide a reunion for members of the USA’94 World Cup squad; to meet with the squads of 2018 and serve as motivation to this fresh generation of aspiring sports people and to afford the young generation of Nigerians and footballers to behold their heroes and enable a grateful nation reinvent itself with opportunity to rally for the future.”

To mark the event, Nnacheta said a glossy 140-page coffee table book would be launched during the occasion scheduled to hold in Lagos early January.

Also, the majority of the team within and outside the country would be present to grace the event, while top footballers in Africa and Europe will also be part of the colourful event.

For Samson Siasia, a member of the glorious team, the idea is a welcome development as this would point the way forward for others to follow.

“I must commend Mr Nnacheta for this initiative, which is not really common in our clime and I believe some of my teammates will be present to grace the event,” he enthused.“I also hope this will inspire the future generations that their efforts would be recognised for their meritorious service to the country.”

  • Sarri rules out switching Kante’s role

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante will not be moved back to his preferred position in central midfield, according to the English Premier League clubside’s manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Italian manager said the role was more suited to technical players such as Jorginho and Cesc Fabregas.

Kante emerged as a leading deep-lying midfielder in recent seasons, winning back-to-back Premier League titles with Leicester City and Chelsea.

He also helped France to claim the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but Sarri said he had to adapt to an advanced role.

“I want to play a central midfielder who is a very technical player. So, for me, it’s Jorginho or Fabregas.

“I don’t want Kante in this position,” Sarri told reporters ahead of Thursday’s UEFA Europa League clash with Greek side PAOK Salonika.

Chelsea head into the contest on the back of a 3-1 league defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, their first loss of the season, where Kante and Jorginho struggled to influence the game.

The result saw Chelsea drop to fourth in the standings and Sarri criticised 27-year-old Kante’s performance.

“Kante, in the last match, wanted to solve the match after the first 15 minutes, but in the wrong way. He lost the position, he attacked too much,” Sarri added.

“This one is not one of the best characteristics of Kante, but it was only in reaction to the difficulties.

“Maybe it’s only a question of time, but Kante has to stay near to Jorginho, especially when the ball is on the other side,” the Chelsea coach said.

  • Russia 2018: A World Cup of Surprises

    Adeyinka Akintunde

The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup, hosted in Russia and won by France, which beat hard-fighting Croatia 4-2, will remain in the hearts of football lovers all over the world as one tournament filled with surprises from the beginning to the end. The football world was treated to one-month of suspense from Eastern Europe, where every prediction made turned out wrong.

The surprises started right from the first kick of the ball on 14th June. The opening matches of the World Cup over the years have recorded low score lines of a draw, or a slim win, but nobody expected what the 2018 opening fixture had to offer. Russia, the lowest ranked team, going into the World Cup, stunned the whole world by beating Saudi Arabia 5-0 at the Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow.

Yuri Gazinsky scored the first goal of the tournament with a fine header, after 12 minutes, before Denis Cheryshev, Artyom Dzyuba and Aleksandr Golovin all found the back of the net four different times, to break the Asian hearts.

The hosts would go on to reach the quarter-finals stage, for the first time in their World Cup history, triumphing over 2010 FIFA World Cup winners Spain in the round of sixteen, before Croatia got the better of them in the last eight.

At the Spartak stadium Moscow, two days after the opener, Argentina, two-time champions and a hot favourite to win the World Cup, were forced to a draw by new comers, Iceland.  Sergio Aguero had opened scoring for the La Albiceleste, and four minutes later, Alfreo Finnbogason equalized, scoring Iceland’s first ever World up goal.

But the shock of the day came at the 63rd minute, when superstar Lionel Messi was awarded a penalty to win the game for Argentina. Iceland goalkeeper, Hannes Halldorsson saved it, leaving Messi and the world stunned.

Argentina would go on to lose scandalously 3-0 to Croatia, and needed a last minute victory against Nigeria to advance to the round of sixteen, where they lost 4-2 to France.

Lionel Messi would love to forget Russia 2018 in a hurry, as it turned out a nightmare for him. Where his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo got four goal for Portugal in the tournament (which included a hat-trick against Spain on his first match day), the Argentine could only manage one goal, in the match against Nigeria.

Germany was tipped to defend their title the won at the last edition, on the last day of this year’s fiesta. But they recorded a shock 1-0 loss to Mexico on the opening day, Hirving Lozano scoring on the counter attack after 35 minutes.

Germany recovered with a last minute victory in the second match against Sweden, needing a draw in the last match against South Korea, but they lost 2-0, finishing last in the group, and thus, the tradition of a World Cup defending champion crashing out at the group stage, which began in 2002 with France (Brazil the only exemption in 2006), continued.

Spain, 2010 winners, as well as Portugal crashed out at the round of sixteen, after failing to get the better of Russia and Uruguay respectively. Brazil lost in the quarter-finals against dark-horses Belgium, Uruguay fell to France in the last eight, and England broke the voodoo of losing penalty shootouts, when they sent Colombia home in the round of sixteen.

Since 1982, Africa always had a representative at the knockout stage of the World Cup. That was not to be in 2018, as the five African representatives; Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Tunisia and Senegal all crashed out at the group stages.

The Teranga lions had a close shave with qualification, having secured the same point and goal difference with Japan, but lost the place in the knock-out round with the introduction of the fair-play rule, that saw Senegal  receive six yellow cards in three group games, as against Japan been issued four.

Belgium, a team tagged the dark horses of the show ended up as the highest scoring team of the competition with 16 goals. They finished the World Cup as bronze medalist, Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard getting the job done for the Red Devils against England in Saint Petersburg.

The new world champions, France, was not given a chance to shine in the showpiece. The Les Blues, 1998 World Cup winners, kicked off their campaign with two victories against Australia and Peru, securing a draw against Denmark in the group stages. They went on to beat South-American opponents, Argentina and Uruguay in the knockout stages and came out winner against Belgium in the semi-finals.

Croatia on their part, with massive support from their president, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, who was in the stands watching the players, and in the dressing room to celebrate with them, came out group winners with maximum nine points in the “group of death” that included Argentina, Nigeria and Iceland. They survived two penalty shoot-outs against Denmark and Russia in the knockouts, before needing extra-time to beat England.

The Samba Boys  had conceded just one goal in their past four games in Russia but were behind early when Nacer Chadli’s corner struck Fernandinho’s arm and flew into the net, the 10th own goal of this World Cup.

Fernandinho’s Manchester City team-mate Kevin de Bruyne doubled Belgium’s lead with a sublime arrowed finish from 20 yards after Romelu Lukaku’s powerful run.

Brazil could find no answer until a 76th-minute headed reply from Renato Augusto, with star man Neymar virtually anonymous other than three poor attempts to win a penalty, although Referee Milorad Mazic perhaps should have pointed to the spot when Vincent Kompany dived in on Gabriel Jesus.

Neymar did finally come to life in injury time, forcing a brilliant save from Thibaut Courtois with a curling shot from outside the area, but it was not enough to sustain his team’s challenge.

Belgium will battle France, who had earlier on sent Uruguay home with a 2-0 victory, in Saint Petersburg on Tuesday 10th July, for a place in the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup

  • Russia 2018: Russia, Uruguay advance to Round of Sixteen

Uruguay’s lone goal victory over Saudi Arabia ensured that Egypt and Saudi Arabia crashed out of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in group A, with Russia and Uruguay advancing to the knockout stages.

Luis Suarez scored the only goal at the Rostov Arena, sweeping in from close range on his 100th appearance for La Celeste. This goal made him the first Uruguay player to score in three FIFA World Cups.

The Green Falcons had a good outing against Uruguay, far better than their 5-0 dismissal performance to Russia on the opening day, they were made to pay for one lapse by goalkeeper Mohammed Al Owais, whose misjudgement allowed Suarez to score.
