One-hour fire wrecks family in Aba

Their son dead, apartment up in flames and the rest of the household in hospital, all this Aba family needs is help, reports SUNNY NWANKWO

In just 60 minutes they lost their only son and with him their apartment. The other survivors are in hospital being treated for various degrees of burns. Mr David Chukwu and his family have been grieving since the February 20 inferno in Aba, the Abia State commercial capital. They need help urgently.

Chukwu’s son, seven-year-old Godswill, did not die immediately; he passed on five days after, in hospital. Chukwu’s wife, Favour, his six-year-old daughter Rachel, and six-month-old Miracle also sustained burns and were admitted in hospital.

Our reporter, who met Godswill and other members of his family a day before he died, learnt that it took over three hours for his wounds to be dressed. The children’s cries while the dressing lasted could melt a stony heart.

Godswill asked for watermelon and a malt drink, showing no sign of stress. Thereafter, he slept peacefully while the reporter interviewed his parents. Rachel pestered her parents for one thing or the other while the youngest child slept off after being breastfed.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Chukwu, an indigene of Okoko Item in Bende Local Government Area of the state, said he lost everything he had laboured for over the years to the fire including the wares that he had wanted to take to the market the next day.

Chukwu said he was at the church when the incident happened, adding  that all they could salvage from their one-room apartment was the clothing he has been wearing since the fire.

The family has been surviving on charity, he said.

Chukwu said, “I was not at home when the incident happened because I went to church for a programme. I was told that after my wife poured  kerosene into the lantern and struck a match, an explosion occurred. I bought the kerosene and we have been using it to cook on our stove three days before that incident. But the cause of the fire is what I cannot explain, because if it were to be adulterated kerosene, the one we have been using to cook would have exploded before the fire incident. My neighbours and others who were at the scene at the time of the incident said that they took them to various hospitals including the Seventh Day Adventist Hospital where the hospitals rejected them before they were brought to this hospital where they have been receiving treatment. Since that day, I don’t go to market again because the goods I wanted to go to the bush market with the next day including cash left in the house were all gone in the fire. I only spend my day here at the hospital to take care of them with some of my family members and relatives.

“The doctor hasn’t told us how much our medical bill is, though they have been doing their best since we came to see how they can save the life of my wife and other children.

“I want to use this opportunity to appeal to the governor of the state, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, his wife and other public-spirited individuals to come to our aid. They should come to the rescue of my family. They should come to save my wife and my surviving daughters. We are in a great pain at the moment.”

Mrs. Favour David said they came out of the fire alive through the timely intervention of neighbours and passersby.

She said, “When the explosion occurred, the fire went straight to the door and started burning the door. It was at that time that I rushed at the door and eventually forced myself out with the little baby that I was carrying at my back. It was in that process that I and my baby sustained fire burns. Godswill and Rachel were brought out from the fire by neighbours who rushed us to ABSUTH (Abia State Teaching Hospital) and other private hospitals including SDA, but we were all rejected because of our condition. But when we were brought here (MAZPA), they admitted us and have been attending to us.”

Mrs. Chukwu said that the family has been feeding through the assistance of members of the public who on hearing what happened to them will come with food items.

She called on the state governor, Dr. Victor Okezie Ikpeazu, his wife, Nkechi, corporate and religious organisations including public spirited individuals to come to their aide, stressing that the burden of paying their hospital bills and starting life afresh was too much for them to bear.

The chairman of MAZPA Specialist Hospital, Dr. Ekezie Ejikem in a telephone interview with our correspondent disclosed that late Godswill had 95percent burn and that makes his chances of survival slim.

According to Dr. Ejikem, “If the boy had survived, he would have had his legs amputated because they (legs) were badly burnt by the fire that engulfed their home. For the other members of the family, we are

monitoring their progress. The last baby had about 20 percent burn, the mum, about 40 and the 6-year-old about 50 or 60 percent respectively.”

He said that the hospital bills of the victims estimated to be in the region of N2million.

Donations for the hospital bills and upkeep of the family should be made through this United Bank for Africa’s (UBA) account number 2004684231 with account name Onuoha Chukwu, father of the fire victims.

Banky W loses award plaques to house fire

R &B singer, Banky W, has survived a fire outbreak which razed a part of his Lekki residence early this morning. The fire which started at about 6am was said to have been caused by a faulty air conditioner.
The actor/singer recounted his experience on his Instagram page.
So there’s good news and bad news. The good news is… I’m thanking God that I’m alive to give the bad news as a testimony,” he stated.
Narrating the incident, Banky said that he was lying awake in bed at about 6am, when he started smelling smoke and realized it was coming from outside his door.
Opened it to see the whole stairway was filled with huge gusts of black smoke/soot, and a fire was burning stuff downstairs. The smoke was so much I couldn’t get down past it to see the source of the flames. Rushed back into my room and climbed down from the 2nd floor balcony with my dog… and then got help from the amazing workers and neighbours who helped me put out the flames,” he wrote.
According to the artiste, the fire was caught early enough and the damage wasn’t so bad, although, he said, it basically burnt some of the stuff that was around it.
So awards, portraits, and some small electronics. But thank God, Duke and I are alive and well. We only had to form James Bond and climb down from the top floor balcony LOL Thank God for my neighbors and the amazing workers in and around the compound for helping us escape via the balcony, helping put out the fire, and helping with the aftermath/cleaning,” he added.
The officials of the Lagos State Fire Service were said to have arrived the scene of the fire by 7.30 am and helped to stop the fire.

  • Fire razes supermarket, boutique

    Fire razes supermarket, boutique

Fire yesterday swept through Lily Best Supermarket and a boutique, Bosco in Abule Oja, off University of Lagos (UNILAG) Road in Akoka, Yaba. Household goods, mattresses, gold jewellery, clothes, shoes, bags, groceries and recharge cards among others were destroyed in the fire which started around 6:30am.
The Nation learnt that UNILAG were invited several times but they did not show up. When Lagos State fire fighters from Ikeja arrived on the scene, enraged youths, who had by then put out the fire, drove them back. Besides, the shops had been razed.
The supermarket owner, Stanley Ake, said the security alerted him around 5:45am of “a burning smell” in the toilet area. “I rushed down and discovered that the smell was getting more serious. So I went to UNILAG to seek the intervention of their fire service, but they did not answer me; they said they cannot move without taking order from their headquarters. I told them to give me the contact of the person in the headquarters but they did not answer me. I went back again the second time but they insisted that there is nothing they can do till they get order. I went to the headquarters but met no one there. While all these were going on, the fire had started burning. I went back to UNILAG but they did not answer till the fourth time. Some people later called the Lagos State fire service; they came very late, after the whole shop was burnt. The youths in the area, chased them away because the shops were already burnt.”
He appealed for government’s help, saying “All my goods worth millions of naira are gone.”
A resident, who simply identified himself as Toyosi, condemned the UNILAG fire fighters’ for not helping out. He said the Lagos State fire fighters did not arrive until around 11am.
“We don’t know the cause of the fire. We all woke up this morning and saw the shop on fire. A lot of people have been trying to put out the fire but did not succeed till the shops were razed. The boutique that was razed was also filled with women’s wears. No fire fighters helped to put out the fire. When the fire fighter from Ikeja came, they just poured water, after the youths in the area had done the job.”
A source, who pleaded not to be named, said the fire was caused by power surge.
He said the youths prevented the fire from spreading beyond the two shops.
A tricycle driver said the supermarket was filled and well stocked.
“There is nothing you want to buy that you will not see at the supermarket, including real gold, mattress, recharge cards, drinks and provisions. There is burglar at the shop’s entrance, on the walls round the shop and even on the ceiling. If the burglar proof was not there, the fire may have been prevented from burning down the whole shop. Some youths in the area tried to get into the shop through the roof before the fire escalated, but they discovered that there was burglar proof on the roof,” he said.

  • Fire razes plastic factory

    Fire razes plastic factory

Fire yesterday razed Rida Plastic Company at Barracks Bus Stop on the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

It was prevented from spreading to the nearby Army Cantonment and other factories by Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Julius Berger and Chivita officials and soldiers.

A worker, who asked not to be named, told The Nation that the fire began around 8am.

He said the cause was unknown.

“The fire was severe and it affected everything in the company’s store including machines, plastics and imported materials,” he said.

The company’s newly renovated printing building, he added, was also razed.

He said the fire started from the Firm’s rear side, where was being burnt. The fire, he claimed spread to the company’s premises, adding that the cantoment’s walls and grass were affected.

Another worker said he received a call from a colleague about the incident while he was in church.

“I had to rush down here to see things myself. It is unfortunate that this is happening and it is a great loss,” he said.

A paramedic with LASEMA Response Unit, who was among the early responders, said a woman who has a restaurant in the company collapsed and was treated and transferred to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

“The woman was told about the incident on phone but when she got here and saw that her restaurant was razed, she fainted immediately, she was treated and she has been transferred to LASUTH,” he said.

An official of the Lagos State Rapid Response Unit who simply identified himself as ‘Mr Nature’ told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the fire started around 7am.

“Due to the kind of products being produced at the company, the fire was difficult to handle because of the inflammable nature of their plastic products.

“Officials of the Lagos State Fire Service battled the fire for many hours, trying to ensure that it did not spread to neighbouring companies in the area, as well as the Ikeja Military Cantonment,” he said.

A worker told NAN that the company has a wide expanse of land behind its fence, which is linked to the cantonment, adding that the bush fire spread into the company’s premises from the barracks.

“The fire started as a result of bush burning from the barracks in Ikeja, behind us.  It is a fence that demarcates our company from them.

“Fire from the burning bush spread into our compound and available company personnel made efforts to put it out but water could not immediately quench it.

“All our machines, including the recycling and grinding machines and the blender, were all burnt in the incident,” he told NAN.

NAN observed that the incident caused panic on the expressway, but LASEMA officials made frantic efforts to control traffic.
