    Fire razes 25 shops in Kwara

    Early morning fire gutted 25 kiosks in Ilorin, Kwara State capital.

    The incident happened on Obbo Road in the metropolis.

    Spokesperson of the state Fire Service Hassan Adekunle confirmed the incident.

    Mr Adekunle said; “The incident involved a cluster of about 25 kiosks/shops, out of which five shops were affected before the arrival of the fire crew.

    “Through prompt and coordinated efforts, firefighters successfully stopped the fire from spreading, thereby preventing extensive commercial losses in the area.

    “Preliminary investigation revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials within the affected kiosks.”

    He advised traders and shop owners ‘’to install surge protectors, avoid illegal electrical connections, and ensure routine checks on wiring systems, especially in market and kiosk clusters where electrical load is often poorly regulated. He emphasised that adhering to proper electrical safety measures significantly reduces the risk of fire outbreaks”.

    Fire razes store in Abuja popular mall

    Fire has razed the popular Jabi Lake Mall in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

    The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday and caused panic among responders and security personnel at the shopping complex.

    It was gathered the incident occurred around 3:00 am with the Adidas sports store in the mall razed by the inferno.

    It was further learnt that firefighters from the Federal Fire Service, the Berger Fire Department, and the FCT Fire Service as well as police officers were deployed to the scene.

    When contacted, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and said police officers were deployed to the location to secure the area and prevent looting.

    “We received a distress call at about 3:40 a.m. We immediately deployed our men there to secure the place and prevent any breach of public order,” Adeh said.

    The situation has since been brought under control.

    Separate fire incidents which occurred in Ibadan and Ogbomoso areas of Oyo state at the weekend have destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

    While a shopping complex was ravaged in Ibadan, a residential building was consumed in Ogbomoso.

    No fewer than six rooms and three shops were destroyed at the razed residential building located at Oke-Elerin area of Ogbomoso.

    It was gathered that properties and other valuables worth millions of naira were lost to the incident but no casualty was recorded.

    Fire has engulfed a section of the Rivers State Secretariat Complex in Port Harcourt destroying some property.

    It was gathered that the inferno started at the ground floor of one of the tall buildings popularly called the Podium after the close of work and spread to the office of the newly constituted Rivers State Pension Board.

    Sources said the fire started around 4pm and was reportedly caused by an electrical fault, though there was no casualty.

    Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Information, Dr Honour Sirawoo, confirmed the incident saying fire fighters intervened immediately to stop the inferno.

    Sirawoo said: “It was at the Podium Block of the State Secretariat, on the right side where the fire started from. But we are fortunate to have the State and the Federal Fire Service would intervened and did what they know best to arrest the situation.

    Rivers Head of Service, Dr Inyinge Brown, confirmed that no life was lost saying she was happy that the recently rehabilitated State Fire Service was on ground to quench the fire.

    She said: “We were informed that there was a fire incident at the right wing, ground floor of Podium Block and we immediately made calls to the River State Fire Service and they responded promptly.

    “We also called other partners of the state, such as the Renaissance, Federal Fire Service and the military who promptly sent their fire trucks. It’s a combined effort, and as we speak, you can see that the fire has been contained.

    “We thank God, and we thank His Excellency Sir Siminalayi Fubara for being proactive in rehabilitating the fire service before this time. If not for his investment in the Fire Service, this situation would have been worse”.

    She added: “We urge all civil servants to take responsibility in safety. Put off our sockets and our lights. Not just putting off the sockets, but unplug to ensure
    there is no residual charge because these buildings are heritage buildings and
    we don’t want anything to happen to them”.

    Fire destroys Owerri duplex, property worth ₦10m

    A devastating fire, suspected to be caused by an electric surge, engulfed a duplex in Arugo Garden Estate, Owerri, Imo State, on Thursday, destroying property worth over ₦10 million.

     The fire incident, which started at 8:45 a.m., was brought under control by the prompt action of the Federal Fire Service, Imo Command, led by ASF I Ewelike.

     According to the Public Relations Unit, Chioma Onyeukwu, the timely response of the fire service saved property valued at approximately ₦30 million.

     “Thanks to the prompt action of our gallant officers, led by ASF I Ewelike, the situation was brought under control using one medium jet of water from the fire appliance,” she said.

     Onyeukwu added that although property worth ₦10 million was destroyed, no lives were lost.

      “The Federal Fire Service, Zone E, Imo Command, remains committed to saving lives and property, aligning with its vision of producing proficient firefighters and its mission to ensure safety through fire prevention and mitigation.”

    • House burnt in Ibadan

    Nine people were rescued yesterday in the fire at the Afriland Towers, Broad Stree on, Lagos Island.

     The incident, which began around 1:38 p.m., was traced to the inverter room in the basement of the six-storey building.

    According to the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, thick smoke quickly spread across multiple floors, forcing a frantic evacuation of occupants.

    He said one person was injured. 

    A witness simply identified as Joshua said the fire started around 1:42 p.m. from Avon Medical in the building. According to him, two persons jumped out of the building.

    “Unfortunately, one of them hit his head when he fell and his condition was critical. He was rushed to the hospital, but I don’t know if he survived it or not,” he said.

    Deputy Controller-General, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Ogabi Olajide, added: “Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have since been concluded, dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of first responders.’’

    However, one of the occupants of the building, UBA, in a statement, said: “We are aware of the fire incident at a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which incidentally houses one of our many branches in Lagos Island.

    “As against reports on online and social media, the affected building is not UBA House, Marina, the Bank’s head office.

    “We have ensured the safety and well-being of our branch staff, customers and other visitors in the building.

    Also, no fewer than six rooms in a private residential building were yesterday gutted by fire at Akinsoji Zone, Ogbere Moradeyo, Oremeji Area of Ibadan.

    Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident.                                  ement in Ibadan.

    Akinwande said the agency’s personnel received a distress call at 5:55 a.m. from one Mr Kayode and firemen led by CFS Adesina Olusoji were deployed to the scene

    “On getting to the scene of the fire incident, it was a private residential building of six rooms engulfed by fire and our officers swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to other nearby buildings,” he said.

    The chairman said that the fire was extinguished by the Oyo State fire services and the Federal Fire Service, Ibadan Command.

    Akinwande said though no casualty was recorded, but the building was severely affected by the fire.

    He said that the cause of the fire was traced to indiscriminate dropping of cigarette stub by one of the occupants that ignited nearby combustibles and set the building on fire.

    The chairman urged households to install fire extinguishers in their respective premises in order to promptly put out fire whenever there was an outbreak.

    Fire on Tuesday night gutted several warehouse plazas at Taiwo line on Lagos Island.

    The incident came hours after another fire outbreak at Afriland Towers, also on Lagos Island.

    Eyewitnesses told The Nation that the fire, which started around 8:00 pm, spread rapidly across five plazas as traders and passersby struggled to salvage their goods.

    Panic gripped nearby shop owners, who rushed to evacuate their wares to prevent further losses.

    One of the plazas was said to have been completely razed, while others remained engulfed in flames as at press time.

    Emergency responders, including officials of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, policemen and operatives of the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps, were on ground battling the inferno.

    They were, however, yet to issue an official statement.

    A trader, Mariam, recounted the incident: “We just saw smoke coming out, then flames followed. People were running everywhere. Millions have been lost in the fire. One person I know just posted the goods he bought this morning, and now the whole plaza is gone. He lost everything. I was leaving for home when it started. We thought it would be contained quickly, but it kept spreading. I had to move all my goods to another place entirely. Two fire trucks have already exhausted their water, and the fire is still raging.”

    Residents and traders expressed fears that the fire could spread further if not urgently contained.

    Tension gripped Ikorodu, Lagos, on Friday after a fire outbreak engulfed A1 Petroleum Filling Station, an independent oil dealer located on Isawo Road, off Agric Bus Stop.

    The blaze, which reportedly began from a diesel-laden truck inside the premises, triggered panic among residents and motorists, many of whom fled the area for safety.

    A fire outbreak on Friday morning has destroyed goods and property worth millions of Naira at 57, Azikiwe Street, in the Mile 2 axis of Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

    The incident reportedly occurred around 3am when residents were fast asleep but its cause could not be ascertained.

    The fire razed down many rooms and shops within the large compound even as a team of fire fighters from the state fire service battled to extinguish it, to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the compound.

    One of the victims, Wisdom Jack, who sells Ice block machines, said he lost materials and goods running into several millions.

    He said: “Both the ice block machines, even the ones companies gave me to mold have been destroyed. I don’t have anybody to run to.”

    Another shop owner who simply identified himself as Chigozie said he was called, on Friday, while he was still asleep that his shop was on fire, but he couldn’t save his goods when he arrived the scene.

    He said: “I have two button hole machines, two weaving machines and three industrial machines and cash of over N1million that I kept in my shop too, I lost them all. But I know my God will make a way for me.”

    Operatives from the Azikiwe Police Division, in Diobu, Port Harcourt, were seen trying to prevent miscreants from looting the salvaged property at press time.
