    Fire razes properties worth millions in Ogbomosho 

    Properties worth millions of Naira were destroyed as no fewer than six shops were razed by fire in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the fire, which occurred on Thursday at Ile-Ewe, Sawmill Area, Ogbomoso, affected six out of 10 locked up shops in the area.

    The Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Mr Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident in a statement in Ibadan on Friday.

    According to Akinwande, the personnel of the agency received a distress call about the fire incident from one Mr David Ajagbe at exactly 14.08hrs on Thursday.

    Akinwande said that the agency’s personnel, led by CFS Dairo, promptly left for the scene and arrived on time.

    “On getting to the scene, we met six out of 10 locked up shops well alight and quickly engaged our appliance and we were able to curtail the fire from spreading to other shops and nearby properties.

    “Properties worth millions of Naira were affected by the fire and fire service was able to save millions of properties,” the chairman said.

    He added that no casualty was recorded while investigation was on going to ascertain the cause of the fire incident.

    Ibadan multiple fire incidents claim property

    Fire incidents at different locations in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital city have resulted in loss of properties to the tune of several millions. 

    The incidents, it was gathered occurred at Surulere Street, Oke-Ado area and Arije Ishola Layout, Amuda Ojere, Bashorun, Ibadan.

    No life was lost to the two incidents apart from  properties valued at millions. 

    Preliminary investigations attributed the Bashorun incident to gas cylinder explosion, while the Oke Ado incidet was as a result of surge of electricity ignited by nearby combustible materials.

    Confirming the incidents, Oyo chairman of Fire Services Agency and Special Adviser on Fire Services Reform to Governor Seyi Makinde, Moroof Akinwande said the incidents occured on midnights of Wednesday and Thursday. 

    Akinwande said, “The distressed call was reported at exactly 22:28hrs on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 through telephoning of a house on fire.

    “The firemen led by ACFS Adesina Olusoji swiftly turn out to the scene of the incident and on getting there, it was the upper storey of single storey residential building on fire.

    “We quickly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to the whole building and nearby property. The fire was completely extinguished.

    “The fire affected two rooms and a parlor self-contained at the upper floor of the building. No casualty was recorded and the fire incident was as a result of lighted cooking gas cylinder unattended by the owner.”

    On the Oke-Ado incident, the chairman said: “The fire incident was reported at exactly 03:45hrs on Thursday, May 8, 2025 through telephoning of a house on fire at the above address.

    “The firemen swiftly turn out to the scene of the incident and on arrival, we met a private residential building of three rooms well alight. We quickly swung into action and curtailed the fire from spreading to nearby buildings. The fire was completely extinguished.

    “No casualty was recorded and the fire incident was as a result of surge of electricity and ignited nearby combustible materials and set the building ablaze.”

    Fire guts recycling facility in Lagos

    A fire outbreak on Monday afternoon engulfed a recycling facility operated by Jincheng Company at 11B Eric Moore Road, Surulere, Lagos.

    The fire, reported at about 12:15 p.m., drew a prompt response from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station were the first on the scene, but the intensity of the blaze required reinforcements from the Ajegunle Fire Crew.

    Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, stated that the fire began at the rear of the main building and was suspected to have been caused by negligence.

    The affected section reportedly housed large quantities of cardboard materials used in the recycling process.

    Although the full extent of the damage is yet to be determined, the facility—which spans three acres—suffered significant losses.

    “No casualties have been reported so far,” Adeseye confirmed, adding that the situation was under control by the time of reporting, with damping down operations still ongoing.”

    M any shops were razed at the plastic section of the popular Aleshinloye market, Ibadan Southwest Local Government Area, Ibadan, Oyo State capital.

    Although authorities could not confirm the cause of the fire, which sources said started about 10pm Tuesday night, goods worth hundreds of millions of naira were burnt.

    Most affected shop owners could not recover any item as the inferno.

    The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Ibadan Operation Centre confirmed that about 1,000 shops were affected and 500 owners fell victim.

    When The Nation visited the market yesterday morning, it was observed that some sections were still burning while smoke oozed from other parts.

    A 15,000-litre water tanker was seen in the middle of the market with some men and women still trying to put out the fire. The thick smoke notwithstanding, men and children were seen scooping water from the leaking water hose to quench other parts of the burning shops while men were seen directing the hose to major fire spots.

    Victims who were betrayed by their sombre looks were seen being encircled by sympathisers. While some sympathised, others were heard to express shock and disbelief.

    Many of the victims attributed the damage to lack of preparedness and firefighting equipment at the nearby fire station in the market.

    The victims who were full of rage towards the fire service men said it was unfortunate that what started as a mere fire in one shop could not be curtailed by the operatives before it escalated to other parts of the plastic session. 

    While some suspected foul play in the incidents, others saw it as an act  of God.Those who suspected foul play said authorities had given March 27 as deadline for a quit notice served on the traders to evacuate the shops.

    A middle-aged woman, Alhaja Balikis, lamented that she lost 10 shops and goods worth millions of naira to the inferno.

    Balikis, who has resigned to fate, said the inferno started from two of the shops facing the State Fire Station.

    She said at least three traders were receiving treatment at the hospital.

    A delegation from the state government led by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, who visited the scene to assess the damages assured the victims of the inferno of its support.

    Describing the incident as unfortunate while addressing the traders, Lawal said the government had ordered a preliminary investigation into the incident which, according to him, would enable the state government to take decisions in the best interest of those affected.

    1. Raise the alarm

    As soon as you notice a fire, shout “Fire!” to alert others. Call the emergency services at 192 in Ghana, providing your exact location and details of the fire.

    2. Evacuate Immediately: if unmanageable

    Stay low to the ground to avoid smoke inhalation and use the nearest safe exit. Avoid elevators and cover your nose with a damp cloth.

    3. Help vulnerable individuals

    Assist children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities in evacuating quickly and calmly.

    4. Use fire extinguishers if Safe
    If the fire is small and manageable, use a fire extinguisher. Remember the PASS technique: Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

    5. Close doors as you leave

    Close doors behind you to slow the fire’s spread and contain it in one area.

    6. Wait for emergency responders
    Once outside, stay at a safe distance and wait for the fire service to declare the area safe before re-entering.

    Familiarize yourself with emergency exits and fire safety protocols at home, work, and other public places.

    8. Do not re-enter the building
    Once you are outside, stay out and wait for instructions from emergency personnel.

    A devastating midnight fire tore through Warehouse B at Mushin, Lagos’ bustling Ladipo auto Market, destroying goods worth millions of naira and leaving traders in shock. The inferno, believed to have been triggered by an electric power surge, following the restoration of electricity, razed electronics, auto spare parts, bicycles, phones, and home appliances.

    First responders, including firefighters from the Lagos State Fire Service, officials from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and police officers, battled the flames through the night.  Footage shared by market security officers on WhatsApp and social media showed towering flames and desperate efforts to contain the blaze.

    Abdullah Ahmed, a security guard on duty at another warehouse when the fire broke out, recounted the harrowing experience: “The fire start with a loud noise. The lights go down and come back, and before you know, smoke don dey everywhere. We tried using water and soap, but the fire dey too fast. Our people immediately called emergency services and they come here fast but the fire too much.”

    Fire yesterday destroyed several houses, shops, and offices worth millions of naira on Adebayo Street in Jos North Local Government of Plateau State and at a market in Oyo, Oyo State.

    Residents in Jos told our correspondent that the incident occurred in the early hours while people were asleep, saying that many buildings were destroyed, with victims counting their losses from the outbreak.

    Sadiya Sani, who also lost her belongings, said: “We were sleeping when suddenly, we had a  small blast from outside. When we came out of the house, we saw fire in this  communication Mast. My neighbors and I tried to put off the fire but couldn’t.. The fire burnt our house and we lost lots of properties ”

    The Oyo incident occurred at Oka-Asamu, Kosobo, Oyo East Local Government. The intervention of the state firefighters helped to curtail the spread of the inferno.

    Fire guts seven-storey commercial building in Lagos

    A commercial seven-storey building was yesterday gutted by fire in Iddo Lagos Island.

    This is contained in a statement by the Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye.

    Adeseye stated that the fire, which was caused by rising room temperature, started about 10 am.

    She added that the incident started from the archival room of the building that houses commercial banks, a bottling company, and other businesses.

    “A fire outbreak on the first floor of a seven-storey commercial building belonging to AG Leventis, Iddo House, Iddo, via Oyingbo, Lagos, has been extinguished by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

    “The building, occupied by Nigeria Bottling Company PLC, reported the fire at 10:22 am on Thursday. The fire, which started in an archival room of about 108 square metres on the first floor, was confined to its origin and successfully put out by the combined efforts of the Sari Iganmu and Ebute Elefun Fire Stations of the agency.

    “While investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, preliminary findings suggest self-ignition in the confined archival space due to rising room temperature,” she stated.

    However, she noted that no live was lost in the incident.

    A tragic fire incident on Friday, December 20, reportedly claimed the lives of an unidentified man, his wife, and their grandson at Ori Eru, Idikan, in Ibadan North West Local Government Area.

    The incident was said to have occurred around 3:46 p.m., according to information gathered by The Nation.

    Yemi Akinyinka, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, confirmed the development in a statement, revealing that five people were rescued from the blaze.

    He added that the agency evacuated three bodies from the scene but noted that only medical doctors could officially confirm the deaths.

    He said: “We evacuated three bodies. But, you know that only the doctors can confirm anyone dead.

    “The unfortunate incident was reported to our agency at exactly 03:46hrs on Friday 20th December, 2024.

    “Immediately the address was taken, the men and officers of the agency led by ACFS Oyedeji were promptly deployed to the scene of Incident.

    “On arrival we met an upper floor of a storey residential building of six rooms well alight. We swiftly swung into action and the fire was completely extinguished.

    “Three (3) bodies; husband and wife and their grandson, while five persons rescued alive from the building. The ground floor of the building were protected and other nearby properties.”

    Tragedy struck during an Annual Christmas Carol service at Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke-Agbara Road, Olorunda-Aba, in Lagelu Local Government Area, as an inferno destroyed a section of the church on Friday night.

    Evangelist Ayobami Adeleke, his wife, and children lost their educational certificates in the blaze, which also consumed other valuables worth millions of naira.

    The congregation was in high spirits, singing and dancing to celebrate the season, unaware of the impending disaster.

    A visibly distraught Adeleke revealed that the fire consumed not only his certificates but also those of his wife and children, leaving the family devastated.

    The cause of the fire remains unclear, and church members are still coming to terms with the extent of the loss.

    “It is as if I am in a dream land.  Nobody foresee it but we give thanks to God that no life was lost.

    “As you are seeing me now, I don’t have any other clothes elsewhere, aside the one that I put on. My wardrobe is empty. My certificate and that of my wife, daughter and other valuables have been lost to the incident.

    “As at now, we can not ascertain the root cause of the incident. We just heard deafening noise while we were inside the auditorium.

    “We are just rounding off the Carol service when the incident happened. All the members scampered for safety.

    The incident affected the Children’s church and other apartments that houses the men including where I stayed with my family.

    “As I am talking to you now there is nowhere for me to stay.

    The Cleric disclosed that no life was lost to the incident except valuables that worth millions of naira.

    Also confirming the incident, the General Manager, Oyo state Fire Services, Revd Akinyemi Akinyinka said “Oyo State Fire Services Agency received a distressed call at exactly 21: 50hrs on Friday 13th December,2024 and Mr Salako to house on fire at the above address.

    Immediately, the address was taken, a crew of personnel was deployed to the scene of the incident.

    “On arrival at the place, it was an adjourning mission house already well alight,  we quickly swung into action and restricted the fire from spreading to the main church building where the Carol was going on during the fire incident.

    “The mission house was affected by fire and we were able to save the main church building and other nearby buildings.

    “No life was lost , property worth million of naira was lost and we were able to saved properties worth billions of naira.

    ‘The investigation still going on to know the root cause of the incident but the eye witness made us understand that during the incident, the yearly CAROL program was going on at the main church building that the fire incident happened at the mission house where children were playing. 

    “It was likely to be the children were playing with open fire unattended to”.
