Firm expands asset ownership in Africa with Flex programme

Lagos-based proptech firm, Abode Assets, has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming asset ownership in Africa, announcing significant progress with its Flex programme.

In a statement signed by its co-founders, Jeffrey Itepu and Damilare Oshokoya, Abode emphasised its mission to create prosperity one asset at a time, adding that it aims to democratize real estate by empowering one million Africans to own, earn, and profit from the sector by 2025.

Recent data from the World Population Review highlights a severe crisis in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, with over 24 million homeless people—making it the nation with the highest global homelessness rate. Additionally, more than 40 million Nigerians aspire to own property but find it financially out of reach.

This alarming statistic sheds light on the complex socio-economic challenges the nation faces. Despite the widespread affordability issues due to high poverty rates and low purchasing power, Abode remains committed to simplifying the asset ownership process across the continent.

The statement read in part: “Initially launched in three locations within Lagos, Flex has expanded to other locations including Ibadan, Mowe, Abeokuta, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.

“Our influence has also reached a global scale, impacting nine countries, with participants falling within the age bracket of 22 to 55.

“Flex has been a transformative force, enabling young visionaries and ambitious individuals to become landowners with ease and affordability. The program aims to eliminate economic barriers by making property ownership more accessible.

“The program’s structure allows participants to invest in property with monthly payments spread over 36 months. A fortnight ago, we reached a significant milestone with the launch of our latest estate, where we allocated plots of land to members of the Flex community.

“We are broadening access to real estate, and we encourage young Nigerians who are looking to secure their future, to join the Flex movement,” read the statement.

    ‘Firm’s proposed board meeting contemptuous’

Platform Capital Investment Partners Limited yesterday said the proposed meeting of Duport Midstream Company Limited (DMCL) board of directors is illegal because it violates an extant court order.

In a statement by its general counsel Goke Oshunniyi, it warned the public to disregard it as it would be contemptious.

The firm warned that the status of Mrs. Mobolaji Kuku as an independent director and Chairman of Duport Midstream Company is subject to ongoing litigation in suits FHC/L/CS/2320/2023 and FHC/L/CS/2343/2023, therefore, she has no power whatsoever to call any such meeting.

Platform Capital said its attention was drawn to “two illegal notices of meeting” of the purported board of directors dated April 4 and 27 believed to be authored by Mrs. Kuku.

It added that the proposed appointment of new directors in place of the outgoing ones is reserved for shareholders at a general meeting, not board meetings, under Section 273(1) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020.

“Furthermore, the removal of Dr. Akintoye Akindele as a director of Duport Midstream Company Limited has been restrained pending the determination of Suit No. FHC/L/CS/2623/2023 by the Federal High Court, Lagos Division, coram Justice Aluko.

“His Lordship, Hon. Justice Aluko ordered that: ‘An Order of Interlocutory Injunction restraining the first defendant/respondent either by itself or through its agents, servants, privies, representatives or any person or whosoever is acting on its behalf from taking any steps towards removing the directors of the first defendant/respondent nominated to its board of directors by the second defendant/respondent pending the hearing and determination of this suit.’

“Consequently, the aforesaid impending actions are not only illegal, null and void but also contemptuous as they constitute an affront and disobedience of the court.

“We, therefore, urge the general public to disregard and discountenance the outcome of the aforesaid illegal meeting as same is null and void ab initio.

“Platform Capital Investment Partners Limited shall take appropriate actions to seek legal redress in the event the illegal meeting occasions any adverse consequence on it,” Platform Capital said.
