Offshore firm celebrates 35 years of safety training without casualty

Foremost Safety and Emerged Training firm, OPEANS Nigeria Limited (ONL) has celebrated 35 years of providing safety training in the oil and gas sector.

The firm also said that it is celebrating 35 years of helping Nigerians retain their jobs in the oil and gas sector.

The firm operates two Offshore Safety and Emergency Training Centers in Warri and Port Harcourt, where it provides an extensive range of offshore and onshore specialist manpower skills and safety training to give individuals the know-how and skills to work and perform optimally.

Managing Director of the company, Ben Nwoye, who conducted newsmen round the firm’s centres in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Warri, Delta State, stated that the most significant achievement in the company’s existence in the past 35 years was the fact that it had never recorded any casualty in the course of training people.

He said: “This for us is a huge success what we are celebrating this year. If you know the number of people that have passed through our centres all these years, you would just agree with us.

“You will also agree with me that it’s quite difficult to find too many firms that have kept this record. So, we’re proud to say that we have been operating at the highest safety standards.”

Nwoye, who disclosed that the firm had been in partnership with the Nigerian Navy and Nigerian Naval school since 2010, said part of what had made the company excel was its insistence on set standards.

He noted: “We set standards and give punishment for failure to maintain the standards.”

He lamented what he called Nigerian mentality in the industry, “where people often declare that accidents are not their portions even when they have no training to embark on certain jobs.

“It’s not bad to pray and have faith. But there’s a need to have certain skills to help you overcome some incidents such as fire and ocean problems.”

Firm engages 18,000 youths to protect oil facilities

MORE than 18,000 youths have been hired by Tantita Security Services Limited (TSL), the firm engaged by the Federal Government to protect oil pipelines and other facilities, it was learnt yesterday.

The Niger Delta Peace Front (NDPF), which dropped the hint, alleged that a hard-fighting clique of silent billionaires, were recruiting unsuspecting ex-militants to return to the old order where only a few plundered the commonwealth.

In a statement by its  Chairman, Patterson Efemena and  Secretary Onyem Philip, the NPDF cautioned the youths of the region, especially ex-militants, to avoid being used by “saboteurs and enemies of the economy.

The NPDF officials cautioned the ex-militants against joining the selfish individuals to undermine governments war against economic saboteurs.

The duo wondered how those who benefitted TSL in the first phase of the contract would be the ones championing subversion against the firm.

They urged Niger Delta youths to shun subversive acts but exert their energies in ventures that will move the region forward.

According to the NDPF, contracts cannot be won through threats but by demonstrable capacity and track records to follow through the procedure spelt out in the contract terms.

It urged those aggrieved by the renewal of the TSL contract to sheathe their swords in the interest of the more than 18,000 youths engaged by the firm to successfully prosecute the first phase of its contract.

The NDPF wondered how a contract that had been on in the region for over 12 years would suddenly become a subject of controversy.

The statement urged all patriots to embrace the “enough to oil theft” mantra of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

The NDPF leaders commended President Tinubu and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) for the deliberate decision to build on the gains of the campaign against oil theft spearheaded by Tantita.

The statement reads. “We have observed the sponsored mudslinging and other veiled threats to the Federal Government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation Limited over the renewal of the oil pipeline contract awarded to (TSL).

“As stakeholders in the Niger Delta, we have resisted the urge to join the fray in the days leading to the renewal of the critical contract to TSL.

“This we did because we hold it dearly to our hearts that subversive activities sponsored by those who benefited monthly from Tantita will not further the interest of Nigeria.

“We have tried discreetly to prevail on those who have committed huge amount of funds to sponsor the most invidious publications not just against against Tantita but also the NNPCL and top government functionaries to stop and embrace the prevailing mood of the nation that says enough to oil theft.

“We are of the view that it is about time  we stopped these threats and name calling to pursue things that are beneficial to our dear country’s finances and the poorly managed ecology of our homeland.

“Oil theft has to be called its right name – a plague on the financial well-being of our country. We will surely do better if we commit half of the energy we have dissipated on this issue to the product end of putting up a concerted front under Tantita to fight oil theft.

“Perhaps, we need stress the point here that contracts are not won by hurling insults at the awarding authorities on the pages of newspapers and those selected for jobs.

“As many have observed, and rightly so, you need demonstrable capacity, and track record to follow through the procedure spelt out for contract award.

“We wish to refresh the memories of those threading this path of infamy that this same contract was executed at heavier cost by some persons for over 12 years with no protest from anywhere. We find this din over the renewed contract rather curious and suspicious.

“As people from the Niger Delta, we should join forces with Tantita to prosecute a successful campaign against our country and our environment rather than supporting the saboteurs of our economy over a port of porridge.”
