  • Firm trains 152 youths in Kwara

Firm trains 152 youths in Kwara

A battery manufacturing firm, Forgo based in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, has trained no fewer than 152 youth workers.

The firm said that the trained workers would add value to the Nigerian economy. The company added that it planned to double its strength in the next 12 months.

Managing Director of the company, Joseph Offorjama said this in Ilorin at the commissioning of Forgo battery assembly facility.

Mr. Offorjama said the company, with its increased electronic features and security tracking system, would offer quality products that are capable of powering modern automobiles.

He said, “The general increase in battery demand by automobiles and machines can only be met by a proven and tested battery brand with extreme strength to suit the Nigerian climate.”

He decried Nigerians’ taste for imported products, adding that “it is disturbing to note that virtually all the batteries being used in Nigeria are all imported due to the challenge that only one company assembles automotive battery in the country; coupled with the preference of Nigerians for imported products.

“This trend has also contributed to the present downward trend in the economy as we import so many things that could be made here in Nigeria, including automotive batteries.

“However, due to the recent policies of both federal state governments to encourage local investors, we make bold to say here that this determination has motivated us in a very great measure.

In a remark, President, Nigeria Automotive Technicians Association (NATA), Michael Omonayin hailed the coming on board of the company.

He added that based on the of the company’s products, the association had since 2009 signed a memorandum of association with Forgo Battery Nigeria Limited.

“While we have remained resilient all these years due to unavailability of the customized brand, today’s ceremony to us is a dream come through,” Mr. Omonayin added.

Commissioning the facility, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed promised to create conducive environment for investments to thrive in the state.

Said he: “It is my pleasure therefore, to be in your midst today for the commissioning of Forgo Battery Assembly Facility in Ilorin. The product of this company is indeed important.

“Aside from aiding the access of our people to quality supply of battery, thus promoting private transport businesses, it will also boost the effort of the government in the creation of jobs and engaging more people of our State directly or indirectly.

“I appreciate your thoughtfulness in establishing this company in Ilorin, Kwara state and assure you that you will harvest good returns on your investment in our state.

“It is evident that by the establishment of this company here, the management is contributing to our prosperity. I, therefore urge the people of the state to reciprocate through due patronage of the product.

“In the past, Kwara State was known to be a civil service state. This tag was hinged on the fact that the bulk of the workforce is engaged in the Civil Service. But I am glad to acknowledge that recently the story is changing for the better.

“It would be recalled that my predecessor commenced the process of weaning the State from this perception. In recent times, a number of companies have been attracted to the state, complementing the efforts of the Kwara state government in providing employment to the people.

“Prominent among such companies are the Dangote Flour Mills, Tuyil Pharmaceutical Company, Kam Wire Steel Industry, and Cashew Nut Processing Industry, among a host of others.

“These companies have in their employment, thousands of Kwarans who are making a living through them.

“I am aware that the product has already made a name and carved a niche for itself for quality and durability. I implore you therefore to make the best use of this opportunity.

“I cannot but mention the phenomenal efforts of the state government in attracting investors to the state. Following a lull in projects, I assure you that the State government will resume infrastructural development programmes at the end of this month. Key among these projects will include road, power, water and education.

I, therefore, invite investors to take advantage of these developments and exploit the numerous opportunities that abound in our state.

Consequently, we have relaxed measures for acquiring land and Certificate of Occupancy and made available other benefits that will encourage investment. Furthermore, all machinery will be in motion to sustain the atmosphere of peace that is a necessary pre-requisite for the upsurge of industries and commercial ventures. I, therefore, urge our industrialists to come over to Kwara state to enjoy the immense benefits available.”

  • Court restrains firm from harassing homeowners

Justice Abisoye Bashua  of a Lagos State High Court sitting in Epe has granted an interlocutory injunction restraining CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited, from harassing and restricting the movement of homeowners within the Pearl Garden Estate situated at Sangotedo Village in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of the state.

Justice  Bashua granted the injunction last week while delivering a ruling in an application filed by some of the homeowners against CMB(property and the estate management agents) and  the Oyetubo Jokotade Estate Resource Limited (previous landowners).

The court further restrained the defendants,  their agents and privies from interfering with the rights of the homeowners in providing safe and drinkable water for themselves and their family members.

He  said the order would subsist pending the hearing an determination of the substantive suit.

The court held that the claimants have provided sufficient proof of ownership of the property through the deed of purchase assignment in their affidavit deposed to in support of  their  application.

The court also observed that  several homeowners had obtained their individual Governor’s Consent and the defendants in their submission did not deny the established legal rights of the homeowners which entitles them to the restraining orders sought.

Justice Bashua emphasised that  this development  prompted the court to exercise its discretion in  favour of the claimants,  Pearl Garden Estate Homeowners,  in order to protect their established legal rights in the interest of justice.

The Judge, however declined the request of the claimants for the suspension of  the demand and collection of N650,000 reticulation charges and the unilaterally imposed N35,000 security fees on the homeowners by CMB.

The Court noted that the validity of the N650,000 reticulation charges and the unilaterally imposed N35,000 fee by CMB were part of disputed issues which are to be determined in the substantive suit hence the court cannot make any pronouncement on them at the stage of the interlocutory proceedings.

The trial judge directed all parties to make appearance in court for case management unfailingly on the next adjourned date of December 10, 2015.

Messrs Francis Adesuyi, Felix Obiakor, Martin Ajayi-Obe and Peter Afenotan in representative capacity on behalf of themselves and all interested homeowners within the Pearl Garden Estate had instituted a N100 million suit against CMB Building Maintenance and Investment Company Limited and the previous owners of the estate, and  the Oyetubo Jokotade Estate Resource Limited.

The claimants had dragged the defendants before the court over the alleged incessant harassment, molestation and imposition of arbitrary charges on homeowners and residents of the estate particularly the reticulation charges contrary to the express terms of their contract.

  • Nigerian firm manufactures largest dredging machine

Nigerian firm manufactures largest dredging machine

Acquisition of effective and durable dredging machine could only be achieved by importation. This was the belief until Nwakama Dredge Nigeria Limited; a local fabrication company based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, recently undertook a one-day public inspection of 18-feet Cutter Suction Dredger it designed and constructed.

Following the wide publicity given to the inspection exercise, members of the Port Harcourt branch of Institution of Mechanical Engineers, led by their President, Chief A.C. Uchime paid a technical/facility visit to the construction yard of Nwakama Dredge Nigeria Limited at Oyibo Local Government Area to see things for themselves.

The visitors, who took time to inspect the dredger machine under construction among other departments in the firm to ascertain whether or not it has what it takes to meet the required condition, including safety standard to handle such huge and complicated heavy duty equipment, expressed satisfaction with the work, describing it as amazing.

The machine being constructed has the capacity to hold 33,000 litres of diesel, crew living room with amenities, crew kitchen, water closet, spud pillars, radio communication system and vessel tracking system. The ladder length of the dredger is 22 metres.

The inspectors were sufficiently impressed, even as they marveled that the company had gone this far without any form of government or bank assistance

Uchime said: “I am highly impressed with what I have seen. This dredger involves a lot of mechanical engineering works.

“There is clear case of adoption of first principles which guarantee the laying of sound foundation.”

Also speaking the Public Relations Officer (PRO), of the Institute, Mr. Michael Jarikre urged the company to promptly identify with the Nigeria Local Content Development and Monitoring Board for the needed support.

He expressed joy that a Nigerian company could embark on designing and construction of dredgers of this magnitude that hitherto were imported.

He remarked that the technical/facility tour was expository, having learnt a lot.

After the inspection, the Managing Director of the firm, Elderd Nwakama Onwuzuruigbo fielded questions from the visitors and reporters.

    Excerpts:

Funding is crucial to Nwakama Dredge activities. How do you raise finance for your projects? Do Nigerian banks offer you facilities with fair interest?

The banks have not been useful in the area of granting us funds. We have made every effort over the years. Surprisingly, the same bank that receives payments from our customers is not interested in funding the same enterprise that makes the money it is banking.

We have resolved to approach the Bank of Industry (BoI). We hope it works out well. Dredgers are highly capital-intensive. We save the nation huge foreign exchange by providing efficient and durable dredgers that would have hitherto been imported, thereby protecting the value of the Naira. At the moment, we only entertain cash-backed orders.

What is unique about your dredgers that would people make people prefer yours to others produced locally and internationally?

Our dredgers are unique because we have employed engineering customisation to give our dredgers the needed edge over other dredgers.

    Why buy from us?

You will have the opportunity of deciding what length of ladder that would best suit your environment. Most rivers close to urban centres have been well-deepened due to dredging activities. You need a long ladder dredging machine to operate in such terrains. This is where our equipment has competitive advantage over others. While imported dredgers are struggling to get sand, owners of our dredgers are smiling to the bank.

You will have the opportunity of having the equipment powered by an engine, pump and other accessories from reputable OEMs that guarantee long life span.

You will have the strategic advantage of enjoying the best after-sales-service from the same company that designed, constructed and assembled the dredge machine. This backup guarantees optimal production and particularly allows for transfer of technical know-how to your dredge crew.

You will have the advantage of acquiring a reliable business asset at a cost-competitive rate that saves you fortune. Your return on investment (ROI) increases tremendously.

You will enjoy a six-month free technical services package.

You will have the assurance of money-back guaranty should the equipment fail to meet your expectations.

Again, our dredgers are unique because we deliberately avoid highly electro-technical components and make use of simple electrical and hydraulic systems that don’t pose many challenges to dredge technical crews. We keep it simple and efficient. You don’t need software to troubleshoot our dredgers at the moment. When our environment gets to that, we will promptly deploy such technology.

In appreciation of the uniqueness of our dredgers, we applied and got a trademark name for our dredgers, which is DGO DREDGERS. Currently, we are undergoing SON e-product certification of our dredgers.

What are the core challenges of building dredgers in Nigeria and how are you tackling them?

The core challenges we face as dredge builders are finance, finance and finance. In our own case, we have the technical ability to design and construct highly efficient dredgers that can compete favourably with world dredge brands. The only challenge we have been having is access to funds to make our dredgers available to buyers when they are needed.

Timely project delivery is one of our revered values. However, we are currently behind schedule in the delivery of the novel 18″ /16″ CS Dredger principally due to persistent rainfall. Our welding area is out door and this has exposed us to the vagaries of weather.

This is one of the challenges to address with adequate funding. Notwithstanding, the Dredger is about to be sandblasted in preparation for anti-corrosion treatment and then painting. We are using President Paints which have proved to be very good. The paints are proudly made in Nigeria.

What can government do to help boost your trade?

We need access to funds to improve our production capacity. We will soon seek audience with the Managing Director Bank of Industry, Mr. Rasheed Olaoluwa. The present management of BOI as led by the MD is really playing a very crucial and catalytic role of transforming Nigeria’s industrial sector.

Again, our economy will keep getting better if all the relevant agencies would give heed to President Buhari’s exhortation to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment, Abdulkadir Musa, and other senior officials that “we will no longer allow our markets to be flooded with things we can produce ourselves. We must believe in our system. Whenever you need my intervention at any time, please come to me”.

Thankfully, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), led by its Executive Secretary, Mr. Denzil Kentebe has been tremendously supporting every initiative geared towards developing Nigeria’s local content.”

  • Firm unveils rent-to-own option

    Firm unveils rent-to-own option

Barely one year after its formation, a real estate investment firm, Natanel Florens,  is offering high-yielding investment options to private clients in the real estate and private equity sector.

The firm, which owns the Private Property Investors Trust (PPIT) franchise in Africa, says its scheme also offers 80 per cent on property investment over five years, irrespective of the property investment portfolio.

Nigerians who wish to own a home without the mandatory equity deposit may have a cause to smile. This comes on the heels of a new initiative by the firm. The initiative is aimed at re-engineering the “rent-to-own” scheme which is yet to be fully entrenched in the country.

Under the model, the company markets the properties to tenants, and subscribers benefit from the financing scheme whereby after 10 years payment, the property deeds go to the tenant without needing capital or upfront payments. All the tenants payments are made to the trust escrow account which then reimburses Bishopstrade.

The initiative involves pairing property investment funds with potential home buyers. Natanel Florens targets consumers who are tenants and are able to pay rent but still want to own a roof over their heads. The company, which recently launched its services in the Lagos area, allows renters to lease to own a house, which is bought and paid for by investors and partners.

With this and other initiatives, the firm plans to transform the African property landscape with innovative and affordable solutions as well as serve property owners who want to optimise their returns through its investment products.

Experts and stakeholders in the built environment say this is ideal given the increasing inflation and escalating home prices which have made home purchase extremely difficult for low and middle class households. This is why the initiative from Natanel Florens Limited has received commendation.

According to the firm’s Executive Director, Business Services, Mr. Yinka Daramola, the PPIT is a risk-free, wealth creation, property equity release/property development scheme franchised by Bishopstrade of Mauritius.

This franchise, he further explained, allows property owners to invest and optimise returns by participating in the growing property market across Africa with or without investing cash.

“We will address the lack of supply/market demand for affordable housing. Natanel Folrens has started identifying existing property or landowners who will pledge their property title deeds to a trust created and managed by UBA Trustees Limited and Union Trustees Limited,” Daramola said, adding that owners would continue to receive their income.

He said the trust would pool and collateralise the property or land deeds to secure funding through Bishopstrade and benefit from the trusts profits generated.

He explained that the PPIT franchise is a tested model. “The underlining methodology of using trusts deed to unlock equity value for housing acquisition is fully operational in over 21 states in United States and the concept of paying rent to own a house is also a tested concept.

“Five years technical support from Bishopstrade will ensure smooth implementation of the franchise, particularly as regards development to fit into existing rental rates. It is almost zero risk, safe and protects property owners or investors through the use of trustees. Property legal documents even though transferred to the pool, are in safe custody of the trustees.”

Natanel Florens’ has launched the scheme in several estates in Lagos. The scheme is in its second phase.

  • Firm inaugurates school infrastructure

Nigerian Breweries has officially inaugurated the infrastructural facilities it re-constructed at Dedeke Memorial Girls’ Primary School in Surulere, Lagos State, even as Surulere Local government Area also donated stationery to the school.

According to the Managing Director, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr Nicolas Vervelde, the gesture aimed at improving education infrastructure in Nigeria. He added that the company’s investment in education is not mere charity but a pragmatic action designed to create a rich pool of human capital.

Mr Vervelde, who was represented by the Group Affairs Adviser, Mr Kufre Ekanem said the infrastructural facilities donated would not only provide an environment conducive enough to teaching and learning but would also compete among the best infrastructure in public schools. He urged the school management and students to deploy care and proper management in the use of the facility in order to sustain it for future generation.

He said the company has, over the years, been active in supporting Nigeria’s development aspirations in line with its vision of ‘Winning with Nigeria’; be it in the market place, product offer, infrastructure development or foot prints. He said the country has a lot of benefits to derive from the initiative because as Nigeria wins, the organisation wins also.

He further said the gesture was about contributing to infrastructural progress in the country through its innovative platform, adding that the organisation’s relationship with the state is a long journey and they will continue to make contributions to support the development of the state.

The Executive Secretary, Surulere Local Government, Mrs Bamidele Hussain said the inauguration of the facility serves as a turning point in the efforts of the local government to partner with corporate organisations to ensure the provision of basic social services as well as infrastructural needs of her citizens.

She noted that public schools have suffered neglect over the years, despite the roll call of achievers that have passed through them. She commended Nigerian Breweries for never shirking away from its corporate social responsibility role to the community.

Mrs Hussain added that the local government had formally delivered to the school authority one hundred dual desks and chairs for the students and 10 tables and chairs for the teachers.

She said each student will be entitled to school bag, note books and writing materials, all geared towards facilitating and enhancing teaching and learning processes.

The council chief added that the local government will continue to support the school as well as other schools in its environment.

A Director in the State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Segun Osifeko thanked Nigerian Breweries for the gesture and its continual support to the state government in every area of human endeavour.

Mr Osifeko, who said education is the bedrock of every society, noted that with the gesture by Nigerian Breweries, the state government would be able to confront the challenge in the education sector head on.

  • Firm donates to hospitals, schools on Hand-washing Day

Firm donates to hospitals, schools on Hand-washing Day

A firm, Unigloves Medical, in conjunction with some multinational stakeholders, is donating hygiene items to hospitals and schools in commemoration of the Global Hand-washing Day (GHD).

From midweek to today, the organisations went visited hospitals and schools across the country, telling pupils and their handlers as well as hospital staff to prioritise hand-washing and other health practices.

Global Hand-washing Day (GHD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilise people around the world to improve their hand-washing habits by washing their hands with soap at critical moments throughout each day.

Unigloves Medical with its partners will install dispensing machines in selected hospitals and schools. The hospitals include  Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESTH), Park Lane, Enugu and Federal medical Centre (FMC). Others are Lagos University teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), National Hospital, Abuja, Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Asaba. The schools are Feddemer’s International School, Apapa Road, Costain,Storknest Preschool, Ebute Metta, Spring School, Okota, Nazareth Schools 1 and 2, FESTAC, Acee School, FESTAC, Seed of knowledge School, Okota, De-Bright School 1 and 2, and Paedville British Preschool, Ire Akari, Isolo, Lagos.

According to the MD of Unigloves Medical, Kevin Onah, his company sets out to sustain the culture of hand washing in the country as students and workers would have the opportunity to wash their hands with disinfectants and quality solutions produced by the company.

Onah said, “This is a way of promoting hygiene among Nigerian children especially and hospital staff thereby preventing infections and other diseases.

“The campaign is dedicated to raising awareness on hand washing with soap as a key approach to disease prevention. The campaign was initiated to reduce childhood mortality rates related to respiratory and diarrheal diseases by introducing simple behavioral changes, such as hand-washing with soap. This simple, accessible action can, according to research, reduce the rate of mortality from these diseases by almost 25 and 50 per cent, respectively,” he stated.

The project is a core element of the WHO World Alliance for Patient Safety, launched in October 2004. Its aim is to address the issue of the prevention of health care-associated infection under the banner Clean Care is Safer Care. Professor Didier Pittet is an internationally recognised expert in hospital hygiene and infection prevention and control, and continues to support a strategy model to prevent nosocomial infections, known in scientific literature as the Geneva model. On April 14, 2005, the Geneva University Hospital (HUG) was designated by the WHO as a centre of reference for the prevention of nosocomial infections. This recognition rewards an institutional prevention strategy and 10 years of endeavour.

Onah said in view of this, Uniglove Medicals, a market-leading manufacturer of premium quality, multi-purpose disposable gloves in conjunction with two German companies; B Braun Melsugen and OP Hardt and two French companies; Holtex and Novomed and Frontier Medical Group are set to improve healthcare deliveries especially in the area of hygiene and infection prevention and control in hospitals, hospitality and manufacturing sectors in Nigeria with the donations. Unigloves Medical Healthcare Limited is a subsidiary of UG Healthcare Corporation which is a multi-national organisation and manufacturers of medical gloves and global healthcare providers. It also manufactures high quality multi-purpose medical and healthcare disposables. They are currently in 10 countries worldwide including Singapore, United Kingdom, United States of America, Germany, China and Nigeria.

According to Mr. Basile Trede, Area Sales Manager, B. Braun Melsungen AG, “We are in Nigeria because it has been observed that mortality related to hospital acquired infections could be reduced when health care personnel wash and disinfect their hands with antiseptic solution between patient contacts, as well as stringent compliance of health care workers with recommended hand washing practices. Building upon our knowledge of the world’s glove markets, we have developed a range of proprietary processes to benefit our customers.”

He said compliance with recommended hand washing practices is still very poor. Careful hand hygiene in medical field is set to become even more important in the future in the provision of high quality patient care. That is part of the reason why we will be showcasing our products at the Medic West Africa exhibition on V.I. The exhibition is an opportunity for those in the hospital and health sectors, hotels, food manufacturing companies and those in a related field to tap from the experience of these experts especially in the application of the process.

Giving reasons why their company products are special, Onah said, “We have introduced a refreshing range of scents, including citrus and peppermint, into our vitality range of dental gloves to improve the overall examination experience for both dentist and patient. We have also developed an innovative range of gloves coated with a proprietary formulation of lanolin and vitamins designed to soothe the symptoms of dehydration and irritation.

“Together, this powerful combination has been proven to significantly improve skin health. Gloves benefitting from our unique EasyDon Finish are chlorinated on both the inside and outside areas of the cuff to reduce tackiness and improve donning, particularly for those involved in regular wet work. With ultimate hygiene in mind, Unigloves products are FirstTouch manufactured, examined and packaged with zero direct skin contact.”

  • Firm shortlists 60 pupils for painting contest

RanoNa Ltd, makers of Yojus fruit drink, has 60 shortlisted pupils for the final of the Yojus Painting Contest holding October 24, 2015.

The theme of the annual contest organised for pupils in both public and private primary schools aged between six and 12 is “Our Beautiful World”.

At a press briefing to announce the competition on Tuesday in Lagos, brand manager, Yojus Fruit drink, Mrs Foluke Makinde, said the 60 pupils were selected from about 5,000 entries received from 250 schools in Lagos and Port Harcourt.

Their work would be judged on originality, use of space, and creativity.

Mrs Makinde said only Lagos pupils participated in the inaugural edition of the contest last year. She said Port Harcourt was added because of the success recorded in the last contest.

She said the company chose the platform of painting because it is one of the ways children love to express themselves and hopes it would inspire them to be creative.

“This medium provides children who love to express themselves through painting the platform to showcase their talent, get noticed, appreciated and rewarded,” Makinde said.

She also disclosed that the contest attracted more pupils this year from both private and public schools.  However, she noted that the public schools were few because of what she described as a lack of cooperation from them.

Winner of the contest will go home with a plaque, computer and one year’s supply of Yojus fruit drink.

The first and second runners up will get six and three months’ supply of Yojus fruit drink – in addition to plaques and computers.
