  • Firm,school partner on data

As part of continued efforts geared towards impacting the society through sustainable initiatives in the field of education, leading investment bank and asset management firm, FBN Capital Limited, initiated a partnership with the Lagos Business School with the inauguration of the LBS Bloomberg Room which houses Bloomberg terminals.

The facility will help students in finance related disciplines gain exposure to the real-time market data tool.

Speaking on the development, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FBN Capital, Mr. Kayode Akinkugbe said: “The Bloomberg Terminal is one of the industry’s most widely used sources for real-time financial data and we believe that this resource will be very helpful to students in finance related courses by facilitating access to information. The donation of the Terminals is in keeping with our focus on facilitating sustainable initiatives that use education and technology as a catalyst for growth”.

Mr. Akinkugbe explained that education is a core focus of FBN Capital’s CSR strategy and as such this initiative is in line with our sustainability goals.

The donation of the Bloomberg Terminal has been a welcome development at the Lagos Business School.

The Dean of Students, Dr. Enase Okonedo, made this known as she expressed her pleasure on the development.

She stated: “Indeed, the Bloomberg terminals have been most helpful not just to students, but to faculty and research staff too. Getting up-to-date and reliable financial information for course assignments and research papers would have been more tedious without them. We are happy with the progress that the Bloomberg terminals have allowed us make, and are thankful to our sponsors, FBN Capital.”

  • Firm clarifies ownership of Omoluabi Garment

The management of Sam and Sara Uniforms, a firm that specialises in making uniforms for schools and companies, has debunked rumours that its subsidiary, Omoluabi Garment, is owned by the Osun State governor’s wife, Mrs. Sherifat Aregbesola.

The company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mrs. Folake Oyemade, described the rumour as “malicious falsehood capable of misinforming the public”.

Speaking with reporters yesterday in Lagos, she said Sam and Sara Uniforms bided for the contract to provide uniforms for Osun pupils and won it.”

Mrs Oyemade said her company was the most capable among the bidders, with the biggest factory and the lowest prices.

She said: “After winning the contract, the government insisted that the company set up a factory in the state, so as to make indigenes the sole beneficiaries of the project.

“We had to approach the Bank of Industry (BoI) to borrow money. The loan was collaterised by my own property. These are verifiable facts. So all these lies that Omoluabi Garment belongs to the governor’s wife is falsehood.

“Will I borrow so much money on behalf of the governor’s wife? Will I also put my personal property on the line for the governor’s wife or anybody for that matter? The Bank of Industry is there to prove me wrong if I lie. We built the factory. The input of the state government was only to give us land.”

On how they came about the name “Omoluabi”, Mrs Oyemade said: “The name came up because they gave us land. That is the only state equity in the business. Through this project, the government has empowered a lot of women who sell our uniform on retail, and youths who work in our factory. When we won the bid, we brought about 500 youths to our factory in Lagos for training. We got expatriates from China to train them on how to use modern equipment for garment making. The training cost us enormous money and the BoI had to give us a special fund for it. At present, our factory has provided jobs for about 3,000 Osun youths.

“Must we suffer because some people are desperate to seize power in the state? We urge politicians to leave Sam and Sara and Omoluabi Garment out of Osun politics. We built this company from the scratch for over 20 years through the help of God. I have created jobs for more than 3,000 youths on the street. I am pained by this lies. If anybody is in doubt, such person should ask us for further clarification. And if the peddlers of this rumour are the types that aspire to leadership positions in Nigeria, then I am sorry for this nation.”

  • Firm assures Ibadan residents of 15hrs uninterrupted power supply

Firm assures Ibadan residents of 15hrs uninterrupted power supply

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) has assured residents of over 15 hours uninterrupted power supply when it finishes upgrading its transmission facilities.

IBEDC Managing Director Fortunato Leynes gave the assurance at the Premier Hotel at the weekend during the maiden edition of a knowledge sharing series organised by the company, titled: “Journey to Change”.

He said: “Generating capacity should be at 5,000 Mega Watts, but what we have when we took over was at the level of 4,000 Mega Watts and went down to 3,000 Mega Watts, but now it is hovering around 3,000 to 3,500 Mega Watts.

“One of the greatest challenges facing the company in the last 11 months since we took over is that there is no enough power generating capacity to distribute to our customers. We also do not generate enough revenue to support our business activities.

“We have put forward a tariff review proposal to the National Electricity Regulating Commission (NERC) because the tariff system now is not sufficient for us to recover our investment and generate the funds we need to make our service delivery efficient. For us to be efficient, there must be an upward review of tariff rates by 25 to 30 per cent to make us viable.”

On why customers are still experiencing epileptic power supply, Leynes said: “This is primarily because of the debt and poor infrastructure we met on ground. We have dilapidated electricity facilities everywhere and this will cost a lot of money. If we do not generate enough revenue, it will be very hard to achieve this. The low generating capacity is primarily due to the vandalisation of gas pipelines and weakness in the transmission network. We cannot serve our customers if the generating capacity is low.

“We are now buying electricity distribution materials like transformers, poles and conductors to improve our distribution capacity. We are also buying metres so that our customers will be appropriately metred. Right now we have a metre application system called the Credit Advancement Prepaid Metre Installation (CAPMI) scheme and within 45 days, metres are installed for customers.

“We have about 1.1 million customers and are still doing customer remuneration to get the actual figure. Some are not paying but are stealing electricity. By the time we complete this remuneration, we will make them legitimate customers.

His deputy, Mr John Darlington, said: “More efforts are being made to provide quality services. The challenges are enormous, but if we can get the right people, attitude, technology and there is discipline, in two to three years, the difference will be clear.”

The Special Guest and Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (U.I.), Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewole, said many opportunities were yet to be harnessed due to power failure.

He said: “If I become the president of this country, I will first address the problem of electricity and other things will fall in place.”

    Osun condemns clampdown on firm

The Osun State government has decried the invasion of the corporate head office of its client, the TNS-RMS by men of the Department of State Security (DSS).

A statement yesterday by the Commissioner for Information, Sunday Akere, said the outfit was duly registered as a research agency to engage in empirical surveys across the country for government agencies and private individuals.

Akere said TNS-RMS was conducting Needs Assessment Performance Evaluation Study (NAPES) for the Rauf Aregbesola administration.

The commissioner said: “No reason was given for the clampdown on TNS-RMS which witnessed prevention of inward and outward movement of both staff and visitors of the poll research organization other than that the SSS operatives, who were said to be taking any document (including computer systems) that has anything to do with the government of state of Osun.

“So, we wonder why the SSS is clamping down on the company that conduct social survey for the government barely two week before the gubernatorial election in the state. The action of the security operatives in the company’s Lagos office for about three days is an unwarranted aggression and violation of the 1999 Constitution that allows all lawful pursuits and endeavours in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

  • Firm opens centre at Lagos Airport

Techno Mobile, manufacturers of mobile phones has opened a centre at the Departure Lounge of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Terminal 2 (MM2), Ikeja.

Managing Director, Tecno Mobile International Jack Guo, said this is the company’s latest innovation through its partner Equitoni, to bring more value to customers.

He said Tecno is encouraging its partner to open the shop in such strategic location to reach out to more customers, particularly those who may not have the time to go the normal market place for shopping.

He said: “While waiting for their flight, they will have enough opportunity to get latest mobile phones and apps that provided them the needed comfort for personal and business services”

“It is not only for sales only, it is also for services and experience and the first of its kind in Nigerian.”

Deputy General Manager, Techno Nigeria Chidi OKonkwo,  said it was a giant step through its partner to ensure that customers have access to more of its products through the airports.

Chief Executive Officer, Equitoni International Limited Anthony Onuigbo  said of the MM2 is based on the kind of customers it’s targeting. “They are highflyers customers who ordinarily do not have enough time to shop at the malls or at the streets.

“By the nature of our target customers, they are busy people and may not have time to shop for themselves, but being confined here at the departure hall waiting for flight time, there is that ample opportunity to buy mobile phones of their choice from Tecno range of products and much better than what their personal assistants or aids will ordinarily select for them”.

Beyond that, it gives the customer the opportunity to buy at techno recommended prices and having free application down load without charges.

“And customers that doesn’t want to buy could come in here, make enquiries and also download applications, while customers who also bought l Tecno phones from other shops could come here and download applications free as long as it’s original Tecno.

According to him, the choice of MM2 for the pilot project was because of the consideration for heavy traffic among other airports in Lagos because of the presence of many airlines and people travelling. We have the plan to expand to other airports across the country to enable us create value for our customers because they want to have value for their money by purchasing quality products at company recommended prices in friendship centers”

  • Firm calls for national database to fight insecurity

The Manager Director, Comfied Transnational Limited, Mr. Babatope Agbeyo, has called for a well-integrated national database in fighting criminality across Nigeria.

Agbeyo made this call at the Special Database Forum and Investiture Ceremony of the Institute of Data Processing Management of Nigeria (IDPM) held at Westtown Hotel, Lagos.

The theme of the ceremony, ‘Authentic and effective national databases, proficient tool to fight or combat challenges `in  a pluralistic nation’ featured a workshop, talks and awards to Commander, Search and Disposal Regiment, Nigerian Army, Col. A.A Salako; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Bolade Olaniyan; Lecturer at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Dr Tola Odule;  Founding Pastor of Synagogue Church of All Nations, Prophet Temitope Joshua, among others.

According to Agbeyo, in today’s information-centric society, reliable and effective dissemination of information play an important role in government sector as it helps provide a mechanism that ensures the integrity, authenticity and effectiveness of such data to help various kinds of unforeseen challenges.

Agbeyo noted that a database is a civilised way of keeping digitalised records about a place, thing or people who converge in a community and share a common language, culture, ethnicity, descent or history.

He opined that national database is a dynamic and intelligent data record system.

In his welcome address, the President of IDMP, Barrister Obiefule Ogbonna, called on federal and state governments to consider the inclusion of data processing and management as a subject into federal and state academic curricular and make it compulsory for students in secondary schools.

He said that a human being, irrespective of his or her calling or discipline, processes one data or another at all times, and defined data as the act of collecting and analysing facts to produce useful information that can be used instantly, secured or stored for future use, reference or retrieval when needed.

“We shall establish a standard professional, training online or e-learning and media centre for training of students and to provide professional service to the public and for special training of students on geographical information system,” said Agbeyo, while adding that IDPM shall initiate and complete the establishment of IDPM national Data Colleges for professional training and award of Chartered Data Manager.

  • Firm empowers undergrads with grants, life skills

Firm empowers undergrads with grants, life skills

IN its quests to engender the culture of self-reliance and enterprise among the teeming youths population, Life Can Be Greater (LCBG), an organisation which prides itself as a “solution-provider to everyday problems” has instituted a process aimed at tasking the creative ability of undergraduates.

The LCBG kicked off its inaugural campaign with an ideas contest, which they coined “solutions session” held at Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo campus, recently.

In anticipation of an engaging interaction with the organisers, the students, many of whom are already battle-weary from the protest over the tuition hike and prolonged faceoff of the institution’s management with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (LASU Chapter), fanned out en masse as they occupied the faculty hall of the Social Sciences, venue of the event.

After filling the hall to the brim, the students got the first shock of the day as a few dozen of the participants were immediately rewarded with a N20,000 cheque in the first few minutes of the event. It was a simple game: they were all to look under their seats and pull out a brown envelope tightly sealed beneath it.

Upbeat, the students ripped open their envelopes; but while some hissed as they read out the words printed on the cards, ‘Better luck next time,’ there were rapturous screams from various parts of the hall as others proudly waved their new found prize which is to be applied towards their tuition.

Expectedly, this got the event to a fiery head start as the students decided to seize the moment and not only compete for the remaining envelopes with various size cheques, but contend among themselves for the two big prizes: the half and full tuition scholarship on offer, a development the organisers described as heartwarming since they set out to challenge the students to think creatively and proffer solutions to everyday problems in their communities, while rewarding those who come up with brilliant simple answers to internal and national issues.

Marketing Executive and PR Director of LCBG, Mr. Derin Olukayode, said Life Can Be Greater is a movement that proffers solutions to societal issues on a small scale and galvanises citizens to push for their implementation on a wider scale. “We are looking for practical solutions, we don’t have to wait for the government for everything.

“There are little things we can do to make life better for ourselves and the next person and that is what we want to inculcate into the students. Life, indeed, is hard; schools fees are high, but life can be greater if we focus our minds on solving those little things that make the country and ourselves greater.

“LCBG is here to let you know there is hope. If I have learned anything in life, it is the power of hope and the power of one person to change the world by giving people hope. Washington, Lincoln, King, Mandela, Obama and even the young girl from Pakistan, Malala, are examples of the power of what one person can achieve,” he said.

During the solutions session, several pertinent issues directly affecting students were thrown up, among which include the worrisome trend of students dropping out of school in large numbers every year because of the high tuition, inadequate funding of education, insecurity problems, incessant disruption of academic calendar owing to ASUU strike, and absence of accommodation for LASU students.

“We are worried because those that drop out of school today are the ones who will become the society’s nemesis tomorrow, and no matter how successful we become, we still have to live in a society with a high level of hoodlums and thugs. Also, we wonder why WIFI network is free in other universities like the University of Lagos (UNILAG); yet, we pay a lot in LASU to subscribe to the internet connection in this ICT generation,” one of the students said.

At the end of the ideas contest, two winners emerged. Oluwafemi Okunleye, a 300-level student of Accounting, won the full tuition scholarship for his didactic analysis of the accommodation problem in LASU and his solution of the state government engaging private sector organisations like Life Can Be Greater, in a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) mechanism that will alleviate the suffering of students who travel long distances to attend lectures.

Lawal Ismail Omoniyi emerged second best and walked away with the partial scholarship for inspiring his fellow students to catch the entrepreneurial bug early in life, because “nobody owes us a job after graduating. It is up to us to create the future we really want and one thought-provoking seminar like this is enough to change people’s lives,” he noted.

An elated Omoniyi told newsmen after the event that he was happy to have won the partial scholarship. “It is really a great day for me. When I came here, I wasn’t expecting to win any money, but along the line I was inspired by what was happening in the hall and I called up my spirit of determination and psyched myself to come up with a brilliant idea, which fetched me N100,000.

“I also thank the organisers of this programme, they have demonstrated that, indeed, life can be greater. I emphasised during my presentation that one seminar is enough to change people’s lives and build up the entrepreneurial spirit.”

A member of LCBG, Ms. Omorinsojo, explained that the group could not afford to give every student grants and decided not to award the scholarships based on academic performance, “because we believe each student is qualified to be a change agent and history has shown that bright students do not have the monopoly of creative ideas and solutions.”

Kemi ‘Lala’ Akindoju, the MC of the event, said – “We are happy we fulfilled our mission, which is that for the students, even if they didn’t win any money, many would be leaving the hall challenged and inspired to change their environment by looking inwards for solutions to their own problems.”

While commenting of the initiative, the president of the Students’ Union, LASU, Comrade Nurudeen Yusuf, popularly known as Optimist, was full of praise for the LCBG team for bringing such huge relief to students through the programme.

“We look forward to more rewarding cooperation with the LCBG team. We believe there can be greater life in LASU, in Lagos, and even in our country. As a student body, we have the vision of launching a students’ endowment fund where we can dip our hands into some millions of naira and give to indigent students. With this, the public will have more confidence in us and even support the project.”
