  • Firm trains farmers on safety awareness

Expert Dutch farmers from The Netherlands have completed a two-week comprehensive training for Nigerian dairy farmers under the ‘Farmer2Farmer Programme’ organised by FrieslandCampina WAMCO Plc, makers of Peak and Three Crowns milk.

Tagged: Farmer Safety Awareness, the training programme supported dairy farmers’ approach to safety on their farms as owners as well as for their employees, families and visitors.

FrieslandCampina WAMCO Corporate Affairs Director Ore Famurewa said it was essential to have robust safety and health structures in place in the company’s offices, on the field, in the homes and with suppliers.

“This particular programme identified potential hazards around dairy farms while proffering solutions to eliminating or minimising such hazards, and ensuring that the farms are safe,” she said, in a statement during the week.

Developed by expert Dutch dairy farmers, the farm safety training provided practical, easy-to-comprehend techniques, which enabled local dairy farmers run a safe and improved smallholding beneficial to people and livestock.

In addition to the safety training, the farmers received training and advice on various aspects of dairy farming, such as feeding and watering, calf-rearing, milking hygiene and practice, milking machine maintenance, hoof care and housing and barn design.

The Farmer2Farmer programme is a best practise model designed by FrieslandCampina for its Dairy Development Programme (DDP) whereby certified dairy farmers from The Netherlands, specially selected for the programme and intensively trained to prepare them for their missions overseas, share knowledge with local dairy farmer through on-farmer practical training.

The main goal of the Farmer2Farmer programme was to help local dairy farmers under the DDP improve milk quality and productivity.

“We started the Farmer2Farmer programme in Nigeria in 2016 and we can say that combining our strengths is helping to bring about positive growth in the local dairy sector, especially where quality and productivity are concerned.

The Farmer2Farmer programme is helping local farmers to make real progress, which is why we energetically embarked on the second round of the programme,” Famurewa noted.

  • $2.8m airport haul: EFCC alerts CBN Governor as firm, Union Bank kick

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has officially alerted Central Bank (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to last Thursday’s interception of $2.8million at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

The anti-graft agency has already commenced investigation into the source and purpose of the huge cash-in-transit, with a private firm, Bankers Warehouse Limited, and Union Bank kicking over the EFCC’s seizure of the money.

The company and Union Bank said separately yesterday that the men arrested along with the funds were on a lawful assignment.

An EFCC source told The Nation yesterday in Abuja that the organization had alerted the CBN Governor on “the seizure of the $2.8million. We expect the apex bank to cooperate with us on this case.

“But investigation is ongoing to ascertain what informed the movement of such a huge amount, the beneficiaries and the final destination of the cash.

“Going by the extant laws, the suspects ought not to be in possession of this amount of money. They are in custody undergoing interrogation and we will inform the public accordingly.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “Our detectives will interact with some officials of Union Bank and those in charge of the conveying company.

“By financial regulations, the huge cash ought to be transferred not hauled. It is strange that CIT operators now haul foreign currency in huge volume. This is why we suspect a case of money laundering.”

But Bankers Warehouse insisted, in a letter to the CBN, that its staff were on a legal mission.

The letter signed by BW Head of Operations, Dr. Lawrence Ijebor, said: “I want to convey to you that once again, we are facing a challenge with one of the security agencies (this time the EFCC), which detained our couriers yesterday evening while attempting to board an Arik Air flight from Enugu to Lagos, conveying currency on behalf of Union Bank. They were transporting US dollar.

“When questioned, they presented their identity cards, identifying themselves as Bankers Warehouse employees on official Cash-In-Transit (CIT) movement and also provided the letter of authority issued by the bank converting that movement.

“Despite the information provided, the EFCC insisted on detaining our employees, taking possession of our goods and threatening to confiscate the currency without making themselves available to our senior managers or other agencies familiar with our movements.

“Our attention has been drawn to an article  in a newspaper and EFCC website where our staff have been paraded as suspected money launderers, exposing the identity of our client and portraying our company in not just a negative but criminal light.

“We seek your intervention as our regulator to address this issue of constant harassment of our staff by security agencies which constitutes a risk that could threaten the lives and safety of our employee and the cargo they are tasked with conveying.

“Also, kindly recall that the CBN had previously called a meeting of stakeholders regarding this issue in the past. It may be prudent to engage the stakeholders once again to provide clarity on the legitimacy, coverage and mode of operations of registered CIT operators.”

The management of Union Bank also deplored the action of the EFCC.

The bank, in tweets on its official Twitter page yesterday said: “Movement of cash across states is routine for all banks. Bankers Warehouse is licensed by CBN to provide Cash-in-Transit services,” the bank said.

“We are surprised by the release of a news bulletin prior to the completion of @officialefcc investigation. This is a legitimate and routine operation consistent with banking.”

The EFCC, responding to claims by the company and Union Bank yesterday said officials of Bankers Warehouse and Union Bank refused to honour invitations by it.

Acting spokesman for the EFCC, Mr. Tony Orilade, said investigations were still on and the outcome of the probe would determine the agency’s next line of action.

He added, “On the Union Bank saga, the way forward is that investigation is ongoing.

“On the detention of their staff and threat to confiscate the money, this is neither here nor there. The two men arrested with the money were detained because they have to offer relevant information.

“The bank refused to honour invitation from the time of the arrest until we had to go out with the story. That was when they suddenly realised they need to honour the invitation. Be that as it may, a thorough investigation has to be carried out as to the source and legitimacy of the money because we are not unaware that some financial institutions are being used to launder money.”

  • Firm unveils platform to drive growth of real estate sector

New market entrant ZAMA has unveiled a modern and innovative web and mobile platform for buyers, sellers and agents in the real estate sector.

The one-stop platform, known as Proptech, provides data to aid decision making guide users with  insights on property and connect them to those who can help.

ZAMA Founder/CEO, Abdulhakeem Sadiq, said the increasing role and use of Proptech was a boon for the regional real estate sector.

“Proptech is slowly gaining momentum in developed markets, and we feel a developing market like Nigeria can learn and re-calibrate itself for seasoned investors,” he said.

Having spent years in research and development to refine the residential and commercial focussed ZAMA platform, Sadiq believes that his firm’s multiphase tech solution has the potential to enhance and shape the Nigerian industry drastically.

His words: “We have been working for about two years to research the local market in preparation to launch a modern and innovative web and mobile platform for buyers, sellers and agents in the Nigerian real estate space.”

Sadiq said PropTech was designed as a one-stop platform to bring cohesion to the market. He described the product as an example of how tech-savvy African entrepreneurs and experts are harnessing global smarts, tech and efficiencies to create lucrative opportunities by solving historical economic challenges.

He explained that his firm reached out to search engine giant Google to grant it access to a back-end API to edit their map and integrate to its platform to literally put properties on the map.

He, however, said currently, the platform is focused only on Lagos with the goal to launch in other local markets in Nigeria and the rest of West Africa.

Inspired by billion-dollar valuated international firms like Zillow, Zoopla and Rightmove, Sadiq and his team used their know-how and industry experience to suite the unique Nigerian real estate sector.

As he explained, “Our market has its peculiar problems and introducing a process driven technology would greatly enhance the validity of property valuation for instance, or even in the process finding a reputable agent to work with to help sell and buy properties.”

He further explained that the platform was a product of collaboration between his firm and its London design firm, which together came up with the name: Zama.

Sadiq in Hausa, a local dialect, ZAMA means a “place to stay,” but it was also designed to spell NEMA – a local term meaning to search. The combination of ZAMA and NEMA means “searching for a place to stay.”

The real estate expert expressed confidence that ZAMA will drive the real estate sector by providing more data, transparency and a powerful platform for industry players to come together.

“Tech and data are fundamental to growing the sector and driving more investment and liquidity. The local and international market is hungry for data.

“With our platform, we will provide relevant data to aid decision making and guide users with relevant insights to make informed decisions on property while also connecting them to professionals who can help,” he said.

He spoke at this year’s West Africa Property Investment (WAPI) Summit, which ended on Friday, November 16, 2018.

WAPI is an annual property conference, which is pivotal for the development of the real estate sector as it allows industry high profile networking. This year’s edition took place in Lagos, Nigeria, from November 15-16, 2018.

Sadiq said a number of stakeholders were very interested in the ZAMA; that there were lots of discussions around his game changing platform at the Summit.

Indeed, the deployment of technology to make Nigeria’s real estate sector more investable and increase liquidity to drive greater home ownership was a major talking point at the Summit.

“I believe WAPI has done a good job at bringing together industry professionals to discuss challenges and opportunities in the industry. Platforms like WAPI also help build relationships and as far as I’m concerned, real estate is about relationships; the rest is just details,” Sadiq stated.

And as WAPI provides the industry’s largest and concentrated location to meet; WAPI’s host Kfir Rusin is confident that ZAMA will be a force in the Nigerian market.

  • Firm introduces first emergency mobile app

A group of young Nigerians have identified how to leverage technology and innovation to develop a system that in the long run will help reduce crime rates, offer assuring security to its users, and provide performance and situational analytics for individuals, emergency operators and government that would in the future shape how we deal with crime in Nigeria.

According to Mr. Okey Madubuike and David Echieanu, Triggr co-founders, “Triggr is a new personal security and emergency coordination mobile application for real-time location sharing, event notification and collaboration among family members, friends, and associates”.

Available on Android and iOS, Triggr is designed for both individuals and corporate organisations, who when threatened by circumstances, desire the quickest engagement with their most trusted allies regardless of physical distance, and their most approximate, reliable service providers. The launch version covers 12 emergency events comprising car breakdown, accident, robbery, flood, rape, kidnap, riot, fire, gas leakage, stalking, sickness, and suicide.

In their words, “with Triggr, users are no longer alone in times of distress. They simply press corresponding buttons on the app to broadcast useful information such as emergency type, location, time, physical distance of each preset ally, and more. This works for both online and offline mobile phones. The app instantly loops all the alerted allies into a dedicated virtual Group Coordinated Response (GCR) chat room, to synergize their efforts, and prevent conflicting response activities.

The group said the app offers a self-help feature to both the user and the allies to find nearby service providers (within expandable 40km circumference), giving their names, contact addresses, contact phone numbers, distances from the distress location, public ratings, and whether they are still open or closed for business at that critical time.

The app therefore offers a feature for service providers in different locations within the country to register and be verified; and if approved, be listed for service referencing in emergencies within their localities. As an added support for the community of users, Triggr also provides a free list of government-approved emergency numbers for related agencies at different locations in the country.

“With many more exciting features in the works, it is no doubt a very handy tool for households, friends, travelers, vehicle owners, employers, employees, medical service providers, law enforcers, drivers, businesses, groups, security operatives (including vigilante and estate securities) and every one in communities.

“The Triggr app is easy to use and available for download on Google playstore. It is revolutioning emergency and security management in Nigeria, and is your best  friend in that critical time of need,” the firm said.
