First Lady donates food items to vulnerable groups in Kogi

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday donated food items to vulnerable groups in Kogi State under her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) through its Social Investment Programme (SIP).

Mrs. Tinubu, who was represented by the Vice President’s wife, Hajiya Nana Shettima, flagged off the distribution at the Government House in Lokoja.

The First Lady said the food outreach started last year in Abuja, adding that eight states have so far benefited from the initiative.

She said the initiative has made significant progress in making life better for women and youths across the country.

“The food outreach began in March 2024 in Abuja to uplift vulnerable households by providing essential food items to support their families.

“We have been able to distribute food items to eight states across Nigeria, which are Benue, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, and Nasarawa states.

“The RHI has made significant progress in efforts to support our people, particularly women and youths, for a better life,” Mrs. Tinubu said.

The First Lady promised that there would be more activities under the RHI in 2025, ranging from economic empowerment, to education, health, social investments and agriculture.

She said the programme was aimed at further complementing the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Mrs. Tinubu hailed Governor Ahmed Ododo for ensuring all-inclusive governance and exceeding the 35 per cent women affirmative action at all levels in the state.

The First Lady expressed appreciation to the governor’s wife for her diligence and commitment at ensuring equitable distribution of the items to beneficiaries.

She advised the beneficiaries not to sell but use the food items judiciously for the benefit of their families.

Governor Ododo hailed the First Lady for using the RHI to improve the livelihoods of the vulnerable.

The governor noted that the RHI has continued to serve as a beacon of hope and relief to the less privileged and vulnerable citizens.

He said his administration had been distributing food items and palliatives on quarterly basis to mitigate the impact of economic hardships due to subsidy removal and high exchange rate.

“I urge those responsible for the distribution of these food items to ensure that they reach the intended beneficiaries.

“The RHI must fulfil its noble initiative, which is to bring hope to those in need,” Ododo said.

The governor’s wife, Hajiya Sefinat Ododo, praised Mrs. Tinubu for providing basic needs, particularly food items, to the less privileged in the state.

Mrs. Ododo, who doubles as RHI’s Kogi State Coordinator, promised that the items would be distributed equitably to the intended beneficiaries across the state.

She hailed President Tinubu’s administration for prioritising the welfare of the poor, and Governor Ododo for prioritising women empowerment in Kogi State.

The governor’s wife assured the First Lady of the total support of Kogi State women, reaffirming her commitment to supporting the RHI towards building a strong and better society.

The Executive Secretary of the Kogi State Office for Disability Affairs, Mr. Yakubu Abdullakeem, thanked the President and his wife for considering the plight of the less privileged, especially the vulnerable groups.

First Lady unveils plans for Renewed Hope Initiative in 2025

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has outlined her plans for women and youth empowerment in 2025 under her pet project, the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).

Speaking on Thursday at the first-quarter high-level meeting of the RHI at her office in the State House, Abuja, First Lady Tinubu emphasized her commitment to improving hygiene, environmental sustainability, and economic support for vulnerable groups.

In a bid to boost young girls’ confidence and hygiene, the First Lady announced plans to distribute 370,000 cartons of sanitary towels across the country.

She explained that the initiative, which she named “Flow in Confidence,” aims to ensure that girls are not distracted during their menstrual cycle.

“You have been helping with reusable sanitary towels, but for me, I can’t really understand it. Some of the girls, when their flow is not heavy, can use the reusable ones, but they have to be properly sanitized”, she told the governors’ wives.

She further revealed that her discussions with medical experts influenced the decision to provide disposable sanitary towels, as improper use of reusable ones could affect fertility.

Each state, including the Federal Capital Territory, will receive 10,000 cartons of sanitary towels for free distribution, with a focus on rural communities.

“When we launch the initiative, I would like you to hand over a carton to each girl that attends,” she urged the governors’ wives.

To promote local production, Mrs. Tinubu disclosed that the sanitary towels would be manufactured in Lagos and Abuja-based factories.

“We are working with a factory in Lagos, and there is another one in Abuja. We will see how soon they can get us 370,000 cartons,” she added.

The First Lady also announced a collaboration between the Renewed Hope Initiative and the Federal Ministry of Environment to address Nigeria’s growing plastic waste crisis.

“I have traveled around the states and noticed the appalling rate of plastic waste. It is now defacing the beauty of our cities. The President is also encouraging us to do something about it”, she lamented.

As part of this effort, the First Lady unveiled plans to introduce Environment Climate Change Clubs in secondary schools and Environment Climate Change Societies in tertiary institutions to instill a culture of cleanliness and sustainability among young Nigerians.

“We are working on that and will soon roll out the programs,” she assured.

Mrs. Tinubu also revealed plans to support persons with disabilities (PWDs) engaged in business through the RHI Social Investment Programme.

Under this scheme, 250 PWDs per state will receive a N200,000 grant to recapitalize their businesses.

“The Renewed Hope Initiative would love to support them in growing their businesses,” she stated.

The First Lady commended the wives of state governors for their contributions to the success of the Renewed Hope Initiative, urging them to continue supporting their husbands in governance.

“I thank you all for the work you have been doing in your states. I am so proud. As wives, we complement our husbands’ efforts, and by helping them, we are also helping ourselves and our people”, she said.

Sexual harassment controversy: Senate a mature institution, deserving respect – First Lady

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has broken her silence on the controversy trailing the Nigerian Senate, saying the chamber remains a “matured” institution that must be treated with respect.

Her remarks come amid allegations of sexual harassment against the President of the Senate, Goodwill Akpabio, and abuse of power by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, in her commemoration of the International Women’s Day, First Lady Tinubu dismissed concerns over the Senate’s handling of issues, insisting lawmakers are “doing what is needful.”

Tinubu, who served in the Senate for 12 years, said the chamber should be a place of honour, not controversy.

“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you’ll say, why am I not taking a position? I believe that the Senate is doing what is needful because that’s what it is, it’s an inside place, and it’s a matured chamber.

“We shouldn’t be hearing things like that. It’s a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It’s an honour for you to be in that place alone.

“I was there for 12 years, even in my younger days, and I’m still trying to look young, but people compliment you all the time only that”, she said.

Reflecting on her own 12-year tenure in the Senate, Mrs. Tinubu encouraged women to carry themselves with dignity and confidence.

She urged them not to allow themselves to be in positions where they could be demeaned.

“Women, raise yourself. Don’t be in a position where men will be talking to you in ways that are unacceptable. You can always shut them down before they start,” she advised.

In line with this year’s International Women’s Day theme, which revisits the commitments made at the 1995 Beijing Conference on gender equality, the First Lady highlighted the progress Nigerian women have made over the years.

“Women, we’ve come a long way, even from all the matriarchs of old. They contributed, and up till now, women are doing phenomenal things,” she said.

She cited the example of Zuriel Oduwole, a young Nigerian advocate making waves on the international stage.

“Look at little Zuriel—you see what we can do. So I don’t believe that Nigerian youths are not equipped. They have what it takes,” she added.

Mrs. Tinubu celebrated the resilience of Nigerian women and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.

“Keep doing what you know how to do, lifting your heads high. All the very best, and Happy International Women’s Day”, she urged.

She also urged Nigerian women to assert themselves in leadership and not be sidelined.

First Lady backs special seat for women in parliament, urges NASS to pass bill

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has thrown her support behind the push for special parliamentary seats for women, urging the National Assembly to swiftly pass the bill into law.

The proposed legislation, sponsored by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to allocate reserved seats for women in both the state and National Assembly.

The bill is currently under consideration as part of the constitutional amendment process.

Speaking at an Art for Governance Exhibition in Abuja on Monday night, organized by the Office of the Deputy Speaker in collaboration with ElectHER, an advocacy group for women’s empowerment, the First Lady—represented by Hajiya Fatima Tajudeen Abbas, wife of the Speaker—emphasized the vital role of women in shaping Nigeria’s future.

She said: “In the context of governance and inclusion, it offers a unique and compelling way to spotlight the urgent need for greater female representation in leadership and decision making processes. The artworks being displayed today serve not only for a Nigeria where political leadership is truly inclusive and reflective of its people.

“The emphasis on affirmative action bill is essential to amplifying the message of inclusion contained in this exhibition. Women constitute a vital part of our nation’s progress yet their representation in governance remains limited. Ensuring that women have a stronger voice in shaping policies, making decisions and driving national development is not just a matter of justice, it is a necessity for stable growth.

“Therefore, I support the affirmative action bill that mandates at least 35 percent of seats in the legislative and executive arms being occupied by women. I urge the national assembly to expedite the passage of the bill. I am committed to supporting initiatives that promote gender inclusion, women and nation building.

“This has been my mission during my mission as first lady of Lagos, as a senator and now as the first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. I firmly believe in the importance of women voices in governance. I urge my former colleagues, the civil society organization and the public to embrace the message of exhibition and collaborate to ensure that women’s voices are heard”.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu decried the under representation of women in governance, saying, “today, we wield the transformative power to address one of the most pressing issues in Nigeria’s democracy: the systemic underrepresentation of women in governance.

“We see the struggles, the resilience, and the undeniable strength of women who have fought to lead, only to be met with barriers. But barriers can be broken. That is why this exhibition is not just a cultural moment—it is an advocacy tool, a visual argument, a movement in motion.

“The Art for Governance exhibition is anchored on a pivotal legislative effort: The Constitution (Alteration) Bill, 2024—popularly known as the Additional Seats Bill. This bill is not merely about numbers or political arithmetic; it is about justice.

“As we push for its passage in the 10th Assembly, we recognize that legislative success is not achieved through legal arguments alone, but through the mobilization of hearts and minds, and this exhibition does precisely that. Because this is not just about passing a bill; it is about shaping a legacy”.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ElectHER and Lead Curator, Art For Governance Exhibition, Ibijoke Faborode highlighted the importance of gender-inclusive governance in fostering stronger democratic institutions, improved policy outcomes, and broader socio-economic growth.

She said: “Nigeria, Africa’s largest democracy, has one of the lowest rates of female political representation on the continent. With women comprising nearly 50% of the population but less than 4% of the National Assembly, the underrepresentation of women in governance remains a critical challenge to achieving inclusive democracy and sustainable development.

“As Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections, bold legislative reforms like the Reserved Seats Bill can be a game changer for socioeconomic transformation. We are building the momentum needed to mainstream the Reserved Seats Bill, shift public discourse, and drive its passage. This is not just about a policy change. It is about reshaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape to reflect the full strength of its people.”

“After today, your lives will have a greater impact, one that will not only benefit you but also your family, community, Anambra State, and our dear country at large.

“This programme is a medium-scale agro support initiative that targets individuals who have the right passion to venture into lucrative agro-businesses.

“You have been trained in feed processing, vegetable farming, drip irrigation installation, poultry farming, and piggery to develop your skills and become financially sustained.”

First Lady pledges greater advocacy for women, youths at AU forum

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed her commitment to advocacy, resource mobilisation, and partnerships to close the gender gap and advance women and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

Mrs. Tinubu spoke at the 29th General Assembly of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The Nigerian First Lady emphasised the need for African nations to harness their heritage in shaping a new vision for women’s leadership and rights.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, Mrs. Tinubu highlighted this year’s theme: Building on Beijing: First Ladies Championing Women’s Leadership and Rights through African Heritage, reflecting on Africa’s values and their role in promoting gender equality.

“This year marks three decades since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration. The impact of this declaration is evident in the remarkable progress Nigerian women have made, emerging from our villages to big cities and even the world stage,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu noted that while women in Nigeria have made long strides in education, health, science, technology, politics, business, and the arts, significant challenges remain, particularly in health, female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, gender-based violence, and girl-child education.

As a new member of OAFLAD’s Steering Committee, Senator Tinubu pledged to strengthen partnerships that would drive the implementation of the organisation’s 2025-2030 Strategic Framework.

“As we progress with #WeAreEqualInAction, I am committed to advocacy, resource mobilisation, and fostering partnerships to close the gender gap and boost women and youth empowerment in Nigeria,” she said.

The First Lady promised to intensify efforts through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to enhance opportunities for women, youth, and vulnerable groups across Nigeria.

Highlighting the key interventions the RHI had embarked upon, she announced that the initiative had procured 60,000 professional kits (comprising scrubs and Crocs) for midwives to support the Federal Government’s retraining of 120,000 health workers.

Mrs. Tinubu recently distributed 10,000 kits in the Northcentral with other regions set to benefit in the coming months.

To tackle Nigeria’s high HIV/AIDS burden, the First Lady launched the Free to Shine Triple Elimination Campaign on January 30 to reduce mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS, syphilis, and hepatitis, while improving reproductive health services.

She announced her plan to partner the Federal Ministry of the Environment to expand environmental awareness programmes in secondary schools and universities, including the re-launch of the Environment Climate Change Club.

Other speakers at the continental event included Ambassador Minata Samaté Cessouma (African Union), Prof. Senait Fisseha (Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation), and H. E. Winnie Byanyima (UNAIDS), underscoring the urgent need for increased funding and policy action to bridge gender disparities, combat gender-based violence, and secure Africa’s future.

The 29th OAFLAD General Assembly, attended by 13 First Ladies in person and eight representatives, marks a significant moment in Africa’s journey towards gender equality, building on to the legacy of the 1995 Beijing Women’s Conference.

Mrs. Tinubu reaffirmed that true African prosperity would be built on “the foundation of our rich history, vibrant cultures, and the strength of our people, with women and youth playing a pivotal role in shaping our future”.

First Lady urges youths to embrace hard work, reject traffickers

First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has called on youths to avoid becoming easy targets for human traffickers and criminal elements by embracing the virtues of patience and hard work.

The First Lady made the remarks during a meeting with the Director General of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Hajia Binta Lami Adamu Bello, and top management officials at the State House, Abuja.

According to a statement by her Senior Special Assistant on Media, Busola Kukoyi, the First Lady said “the get-rich-quick syndrome is not helping matters. Even our religious institutions are doing prosperity preaching, even the Bible talks about work.

“The social media is also not helping. Nollywood as well,” she said.

She described the increasing cases of human trafficking as disheartening, particularly the recent raid on a baby factory in Abuja where 19 pregnant young girls were rescued.

Tinubu pledged her full support for NAPTIP’s efforts to combat trafficking, starting with mobilizing the wives of state governors to raise awareness and strengthen advocacy.

Bello sought the First Lady’s support for NAPTIP’s renewed campaign against human trafficking and gender-based violence.

She stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that “trafficking in persons is the second largest transnational organized crime in the world after drug trafficking. It is also a huge menace in Nigeria and requires the buy-in and active engagement of critical stakeholders to fight it.”

Despite NAPTIP’s recent successes—including the rescue of 21 young victims taken from Niger State en route to the Republic of Niger—the Director General highlighted significant challenges, such as resource mobilization and legal gaps.

She outlined skills acquisition, awareness advocacy, provision of adequate shelter, and legislative support as key areas where intervention from the First Lady would be invaluable.

In a separate engagement, the First Lady also met with the newly elected national executives of the National Council for Women Societies of Nigeria (NCWS), led by its National President, Princess Edna Azura.

The delegation expressed gratitude for her continued support, particularly in the wake of the passing of their former president, Hajia Lami Adamu Lau.

Senator Tinubu commended the council for its unity and urged its leadership to maximize opportunities within the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) to better serve women at the grassroots level.

She reaffirmed commitment to building stronger families through the initiative, emphasizing that empowerment programs at sub-national levels remain a top priority.
