Food Security: First Lady Tinubu launches Young Farmers Club

First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has launched the Young Farmers Club, Nigeria, an initiative of her pet project, Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.

At the launch held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Mrs. Tinubu performed a symbolic presentation of membership cards, handbooks, and farming implements to pupils from various schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

First Lady Tinubu said the Young Farmers Club, Nigeria aims to revive Nigeria’s indigenous occupation of farming, create employment opportunities, diversify the economy, and ensure food security.

Mrs. Tinubu noted that agriculture has always been the backbone of Nigeria’s economy and can be resuscitated and scaled up with modern techniques and mechanization.

She cited examples of groundnut pyramids, cotton plantations, palm oil cultivation, cocoa, and rubber plantations that once thrived in different parts of the country.

“Today, the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Young Farmers Club Nigeria, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, awakens in me a nostalgic feeling of hard work and productivity as a noble virtue.

“The song we just heard essentially means that our land is known for farming, anyone who does not work will steal, and that education without farming is incomplete.

“It encourages us to revive our indigenous occupation, which is farming. It is this spirit of hard work and productivity that we seek to rekindle today with the launch of the Young Farmers Club Nigeria.

“Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States of America and one of the founding fathers, once said ‘Agriculture is the wisest pursuit because it will, in the end, contribute most to real wealth, good morals and happiness’.

“Agriculture has always been the backbone of our nation. From time past, we have tilled the land with our hands and hearts to the present, where agriculture continues to be a crucial part of our daily lives and economy.

“It is clear that farming is not just an occupation, it is a way of life which can create employment opportunities for our teeming young population, help diversify the economy and put food on our tables.

“As I reminisce, I remember the groundnut pyramids and cotton plantations in the north, palm oil cultivation in the east, cocoa and rubber plantations in the west and the southern part of Nigeria. I believe all of these can be resuscitated and scaled up with modern techniques and mechanization”, she said.

She said the club will start with 12 pilot schools in the FCT, comprising upper primary and junior secondary school students, adding that each member has been provided with a club uniform, watering cans, and hoes, courtesy of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security has made financial provisions to scale up the club nationwide, and interested schools can register with their state’s first lady for necessary support.

Capital Territory to kick-start the club nationwide. We have chosen 12 schools today, comprising of pupils in upper primary schools and students in junior secondary schools.

“Each member is proudly kitted in their club uniform and has been provided with the watering cans and hoes as starter tools, with all expenses paid for by the Renewed Hope Initiative. This is to serve as a model for each interested state to follow and adopt in implementing this program.

“We will be providing each state with two samples of the uniform and the farming implements. Therefore, interested schools nationwide should register with the first ladies of their respective states.

“This registration will then be channelled to the Young Farmers Club’s desk office at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security offices in their various state for necessary provisions and support.

“The club activities are to be further supported by the respective states once the allotted resources are expended”, she said.

Mrs. Tinubu commended the efforts of those involved in bringing the vision to life, particularly the governing board of the Renewed Hope Initiative and the wife of the Vice President.

In his speech, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, said the initiative includes training young farmers in modern farming techniques and technology to combat climate change and promote sustainability.

Kyari, who conducted the induction ceremony for the young farmers who were drawn from various schools, highlighted the National Greenhouse Farming Initiative and other programs to equip youth with skills for precision farming.

The First Lady, in her keynote address at the unveiling of the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric and announcement of the winner of the competition, which was held on Monday, September 16, at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, explained that the concept of a national fabric was inspired by her visit to Zimbabwe in December 2023, where she saw a similar initiative.

She said the #OneNigeria/UnityFabric Competition was launched in February 2024, calling on youths aged 15-25 to create a design that would represent Nigeria’s unity.

A panel of judges, including renowned fashion icon Princess Zainab Abba Folawiyo and international textile fashion designer Miss Banke Kuku, selected the best design from 111 entries.

“I would like to briefly share the background of what led us to this moment. In December 2023, I visited Zimbabwe for the launch of #WeAreEqual Unifying Campaign of the Organization of the African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) on this visit, I came across the concept of a national fabric, which they, and this fascinated me.

“I believe this concept is a unifying one, where we can infuse our cultural diversity and break down tribal barriers to identify as a people of one nation. So I decided that it would be a good idea to have a similar experience.

“Upon my arrival, at one of the meetings of the Governing Council of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), I mooted the idea and to my surprise, everyone seemed excited about it. Thereafter, the #OneNigeriaUnity Fabric Competition was announced through various media platforms in February 2024, calling on all our youth between the ages of 15 to 25 to create a design for a fabric that will be launched as the national unity fabric.

She’s the one who actually designed the gift scarves I give out because she’s a textile designer.

“Both of them, with members of the Governing Board, and some friends of RHI, had the task of selecting the best design from 111 entries. This selection process was rigorous, but today, we are happy to present the best design selected by our expert judges. Well done, and thank you”, she said.

Mrs. Tinubu also disclosed that the new national fabric would be worn across the country to celebrate the Independence Day Anniversary on October 1, 2024.

“We also have a brochure of the compilation of all the entries. Every design submitted is a demonstration of the depth of talent we have in Nigeria. I applaud each one of you for your contribution. However, we can only have one winner, but I urge you not to relent in expressing your creativity, and imagination and nurturing your dreams and passion.

“The winning design was further worked upon by our renowned textile designer, Miss Banke Kuku, and on our part from the Renewed Hope Initiative team, we added the Nigerian coat of arms to make it truly a national fabric.

“As we showcase this design, our goal is to encourage local mass production of the unity fabric by two of our local manufacturers, namely Sunflag Nigeria Limited, Lagos, and BBY

Multitrade Limited Kano, making it accessible to all Nigerians.

“By mass-producing this fabric, we aim to stimulate local industries, create jobs and boost our economy. We envision this fabric will be used in national celebration events and daily lives, symbolizing unity, love and pride in our nation.

“This project aligns with our broader objectives of fostering creativity, supporting local enterprises and celebrating a national identity in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“The fabric will be officially worn for our Independence Day celebration on the 1st of October, 2024, across the nation.

    • Senator Tinubu launches initiative to boost birth registration in Nigeria

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has said a robust and efficient civil registration system is essential to national development and effective governance.

The First Lady said this yesterday in Abuja at the launch of the UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate for 2024, which was facilitated through her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) in partnership with the National Population Commission (NPC) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

At the event, which was held at the State House Conference Centre, Mrs. Tinubu stressed the essence of birth registration the Nigerian children.

The launch of the UNICEF/RHI Commemorative Birth Certificate for 2024 is a significant step towards ensuring that every Nigerian child is counted, considered, and cared for, as the country strives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 16.9.2 – “a legal identity for all, including birth registration”.

“It is important to note that a robust and efficient civil registration system is pivotal to our development and governance.

“This ensures that every live birth is recorded, and forms the basis for policy, planning, and service delivery that meets the needs of all Nigerians. This is more than an administrative task; it provides the foundation for our social security,” she said.

Senator Tinubu listed the benefits accruable to any society that prioritises birth registration, saying these include helping the government to properly and adequately plan its programmes and policies.

“Our children, the treasure of our nation, should be guaranteed their rights and privileges from the onset. A well-functioning civil registration and vital statistics safeguards these rights and ensures that no violation goes unnoticed.

“To all parents, birth registration is very vital. It is the child’s legal proof of identity, as a Nigerian, without which children will not be fully recognised by the government. They could miss out on government’s provision of healthcare, education, and other social amenities.

“Without a birth certificate, children will be unable to prove their age and this puts them at a great disadvantage. I therefore encourage all parents to register the birth of their children and obtain authentic birth certificates recognised by the government,” the First Lady said.

She hailed the UNICEF for its leadership and commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to advance birth registrations and issuance of birth certificates to children.

Senator Tinubu also congratulated the National Population Commission (NPC), the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and a private sector partner, Banksforte Technologies Limited, for their initiative to issue a national identification number to every child at birth, starting from this year.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio described the initiative as a clarion call for collective action.

Akpabio urged Nigerians to support what he called a vital cause, praising the First Lady for her leadership and dedication to improving the welfare of children across the country.

Represented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Population, Abdul Ningi, the Senate President noted that birth registration is the first official acknowledgment of a child’s existence by the state, granting them access to essential services, such as education and healthcare.

Akpabio urged all stakeholders, including government agencies, the civil society, and community leaders, to unite in making the initiative a success.

NPC Chairman Nasir Kwarra described the commemorative event as a significant step towards the government’s efforts to offer Nigerian children their first foundational identity to grant them access to essential government services, such as education and healthcare.

Senator Tinubu spoke at the maiden Gender and Social Norms Summit organised by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with her office at the State House yesterday in Abuja.

She urged law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to take decisive action against such crimes against the female gender.

“Recently, the spate of rape cases and gender-based violence has reached an alarming rate. Every single day, we hear about rape cases; even our babies are violated. Do we allow this trend to continue or do we look the other way?

“That is why I am calling on the law enforcement agencies, the Inspector General of Police, the Attorney General of the Federation, and the Chairman of the National Assembly, who is the Senate President, to appropriate and enforce stiffer laws and punishment on perpetrators of rape, sexual abuse and other forms of gender based violence.

“No guilty party should be allowed to go free and start roaming the streets looking for the next victim,” she said.

“There must be improved legislation to give, and enforce appropriate punishment to perpetrators of rape, sexual abuse and other forms of gender based violence, who are dangerous and not deserving of roaming the streets. He highlighted the Nigerian government’s provision of free and compulsory basic education, stressing the importance of creating safe and supportive school environments for girls.

Mamman pointed out that girls are more vulnerable than boys and require better facilities, hygiene, and safety measures in schools.

He disclosed that recently, his Ministry collaborated with the Ministry of Justice to establish a standard operating procedure for addressing violence in schools, which has received positive feedback. He added that the government has also revived the National Safe Schools Programme to enhance security in educational institutions.

Attorney General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, in his goodwill message, emphasised the need to address deeply entrenched gender norms that perpetuate violence against women.

Represented by the Solicitor General of the Federation, Beatrice Jessy-Agba, he noted that societal practices often condone such violence, rooted in patriarchal frameworks that dictate women’s roles and behaviours.

Fagbemi highlighted the prevalence of harmful practices like female genital mutilation and child marriage, which are upheld by social norms that pressure families to conform, often at the expense of girls’ well-being.

He called for collaborative efforts with community and religious leaders to challenge these beliefs and empower women through education and economic opportunities.

Also speaking, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mustapha Fall addressed the urgent need to confront gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices in Nigeria, such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage.

He emphasized that dismantling the social norms that perpetuate violence against women and girls requires a collective effort from all stakeholders.

Fall expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her unwavering support in advancing gender issues and empowering women.

He highlighted alarming statistics, noting that Nigeria has the second highest rate of FGM globally, with 86% of affected women undergoing the procedure before age five.

Additionally, he pointed out that Nigeria has the highest number of child brides in Africa, with an estimated 22 million girls married before adulthood.

Deputy Representative of UNFPA, Koessan Kuawu, on his part, commended the First Lady for her leadership in addressing gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful social norms.

He noted that the summit represents a united effort to tackle pressing issues affecting millions of women and girls in Nigeria.

According to him, despite ongoing initiatives, Nigeria continues to face high rates of harmful practices, including female genital mutilation (FGM) and child marriage, which are often perpetuated by entrenched social norms.

Kuawu highlighted that Nigeria has the second highest rate of FGM globally, with 86% of affected women undergoing the procedure before age five.

He also pointed out that nearly one in three ever-married women in Nigeria have experienced violence from their partners.

Emir of Shonga, Haliru Yahaya, emphasised the importance of engaging traditional leaders in community programmes aimed at combating gender-based violence (GBV) and harmful practices.

He noted that without the support of local leaders, initiatives may fail to resonate with the community.

Yahaya highlighted the challenges posed by practices such as FGM and early marriage, regretting that the gains they made in tackling the menace were erased by the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing poverty.

He praised the efforts of the First Lady and the Women’s Affairs Ministry in addressing these issues and urged stakeholders to work closely with traditional leaders to ensure they are informed and supportive of initiatives aimed at protecting women and girls.

Yahaya stressed that understanding and enlightening these leaders is crucial for the success of any program, as they play a pivotal role in shaping community attitudes.

He reaffirmed the need for a collaborative approach to empower women, stating that neglecting their contributions would hinder national progress.

In attendance were Wives of State Governors, State Commissioners of Women’s Affairs and Health, Ministers of Women’s Affairs, Youth, traditional rulers, and other stakeholders.
