The complete works of Patience Jonathan

Involvement of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, in politics and governance since the emergence of her husband as Nigeria’s president has made her a subject of unending controversy. In this report, Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu, attempts a deconstruction of Mrs. Jonathan’s sensibilities and offers a concise presentation of what we may call her complete works.

She is a woman only few people can ignore. Full of activity, ever visible and never ready to keep silent even if the issue at stake would be considered by many in her position as too delicate, Dame Patience Jonathan, wife of Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan, has, perhaps, because of her directness, become one of the deepest puzzles in Nigeria’s political discourse.

Already, her resolve not to hide this character trait, which had evidently attracted unending criticisms from opponents, is considered the reason for the depth of criticism she receives from her opponents.

Her admirers however say she is being criticized unfairly as most of the alleged unsavory utterances are born out of deep love for her husband and her passionate sensibilities.

Perhaps, the first major occasion for that contradiction, was the height of the controversy over the kidnap of the Chibok girls by Boko Haram insurgents last year’s May.  Then, the opposition was making a mince meat of her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, for failing to believe the reality of the national tragedy, and Mrs. Jonathan, in a passionate effort to help the matter, convened a meeting with some of the relevant personalities in the Chibok matter, including the parents. In that meeting, the Nigeria’s First Lady, showed so much emotions to help counter opposition’s allegation of insensitivity when she broke down in tears.

At a meeting with wives of the governors of Nasarawa, Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Gombe, Benue, Abia and Akwa Ibom States in Aso Rock, she also expressed worry at the attitude of the wife of the Borno State Governor Mrs. Nana Shettimah, towards the missing Chibok school girls.

The meeting and the expression of concern, which were generally acknowledged then and praised however became a subject of controversy when the First Lady flayed Shettima’s wife for allegedly being “unconcerned over the girls’ abduction.”

It was a rare drama as Mrs. Jonathan suddenly burst into tears, saying repeatedly “God is watching oo,” adding, “Before all these killings, I called and told the First Lady of Borno State to let us come together. She answered me yes, but when the kidnap happened, I called her, she did not answer me. I invited her, she did not turn up even up till today. No woman will fold her arms when her house is on fire. Today, my house is on fire.

“Before last Friday, I called her and she promised to attend the Friday’s meeting here. But to our greatest surprise, she sent her commissioner for women affairs. Also today, she sent her commissioner for women affairs. She is the mother of Borno State. She is the first mother of these missing girls. I am their grandmother. She is not coming out. All Nigerian women are calling her. If she is not concerned and she says she doesn’t want her people to be safe, then it is left to her. If you tell us you are not crying, why should I cry more than the bereaved. If I cry more than the bereaved, the world would ask me a question.

“If after today, Borno women say we should not help them, then Nigerian women, don’t demonstrate again. If you demonstrate and police do you anything, you are on your own. Borno women are playing game. Nigerian women should not go out for demonstration. Don’t use school children for demonstration again. Borno women are not ready for cooperation”, she said.

The First Lady added, “People are dying. How can you play politics when you see your fellow human beings dying? Nigerian women, I beg you to support me. Why we will join our husbands to kill others. We want the killings to stop. If we don’t get to know the whereabouts of our daughters, the next thing is they (Boko Haram) will get to us. I am not accusing anybody. My own is let us stop killings and kidnapping. Let us say a stop to these.

“We don’t know what might happen. We don’t wear bullet-proofs. I am not exempting myself or my husband. If I am found guilty, let me go instead of blood to flow. If our constitution is the problem, let them amend it. Today’s meeting will not end because the abducted children are still not out. If you say I should go and sleep, I would go and sleep. But if you say we should move forward to see the end of this, we would go forward”, she said.

Her dramatic intervention to the Chibok girls’ saga has since then remained a subject of ridicule and criticism even as every of her public comments have also exposed her to more criticisms.

    The stoning saga:

Perhaps, the latest utterance of Dame Patience Jonathan, for which she has been criticized and blamed for not helping her husband’s political fortunes is the comment she made in Calabar, where she allegedly called on her supporters to stone her husband’s political opponents. The First Lady, also called ‘Mama Peace,’ had reportedly told PDP supporters, “Anybody that tells you change, stone that person.”

Mrs. Jonathan made this appeal to her supporters in Calabar on March 2, 2015, while campaigning for her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan.

Patience Jonathan said: “Anybody that come and tell you change, stone that person. Anybody that come and tell you he will change, stone that person.

”What you did not do in …, is now that old age has caught up with you, you want to come and change? You can’t change; rather you will turn back to a baby. You will turn back to a baby. From old age nothing, so nothing like change. Rather (it) is continuity,” she further added.

The First Lady advised the women to ensure they cast their votes in the coming elections even if they were in having labour pains.

“Even though belle (pregnancy) is disturbing you, tell it baby, baby let me go and vote. Baby wait let me go and exercise my mandate. Baby wait let me go and do what I can use to feed you.  Baby wait for me, let me go and vote, after voting, I will come and deliver you,  and you won’t die because Goodluck has given all the safety measures.  You won’t die,” Mrs. Jonathan urged the excited crowed.

    Reactions to her utterances:

More than in all the other instances where the utterances by the First Lady have elicited reactions, her recent call to stone all agents of change has received unprecedented reactions.

The first to formally react to the comment was the target of the verbal attack, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.). The retired army general and his party threatened to drag the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, before the International Criminal Court, ICC, for allegedly mobilizing a hate campaign against Buhari.

Buhari in his protest said Mrs. Jonathan, whose husband is the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, asked supporters of her husband to “stone” anyone who chants the APC’s change slogan.

The protest was made by APC Presidential Campaign Council (APCPCO) in a statement issued in a letter of complaint against the First Lady, signed by the Director General of APCPCO, Governor Rotimi Amaechi. The campaign council said the protest letter will be formerly dispatched to the ICC, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, among relevant authorities.

A statement from the campaign organisation quoted Amaechi as saying that “Change, as the entire country must know by now, is the slogan of the APC  the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state.”

The APCPCO’s statement likened some of Dame Jonathan’s inciting comments and conduct during this political campaign season, to those of Mrs. Simone Gbagbo, wife of the former president of Cote D’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, prior to that country’s 2010 election.

The party recalled that the ICC indicted Mrs. Gbagbo for her part in planning to perpetrate brutal attacks including murder, rape, and sexual violence, on her husband’s political opponents in the wake of the 2010 election.

APCPCO said that Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government, adding that the position of First Lady is not recognized by the Nigerian constitution.

It further stated that Gbagbo’s case showed the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.

The APCPCO pointed out that, “Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also goes completely against the Abuja Peace Accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, General Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan as a gesture aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.

“PDP supporters in the state who may not know better could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against APC members,” Amaechi was quoted as saying.

Since the publication of that protest letter, many Nigerians have reacted to the matter, either in defence of the First Lady or in support APC’s call to caution the First Lady.

Mrs. Jonathan’s supporters, including the husband’s party, the PDP, argued that her comments were not enough to drag her to ICC. Other commentators however think otherwise.

Prof Itse Sagay, for example could not hide his conviction that by her utterances, the First Lady adds no value to President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid.

Sagay reportedly said, “I feel very sad given the level of the person it is coming from. It is extremely in bad taste because it is purely abusive and insulting; it has no value because it does not add to the value of the PDP. It does not enhance the possibility of the president being re-elected. It was a very bad insult and raw abuse, which is not expected of people of the status of the First Lady. I am extremely disappointed. It is below the status of the First Lady.”

But Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) believes ICC is made for more serious issues, not for political issues.

“I do not know whether the ICC is the appropriate venue. The worst case is to say that Nigeria laws can deal with whatever issue that APC is making. There are two ways to do it. First is to approach our national laws on defamatory so that you can go to court and sue the person. Secondly, they can say that she is criminally inciting. My point is that the ICC is made for more serious issues and not for political issues, for God’s sake. Whatever the First Lady must have said right or wrong, the point is that there are national laws.”

Another Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Emeka Ngige, however expressed concern that such matters can lead to anarchy. “I think anything one is doing now, once it does not conform to International Court practices, you can find yourself answerable in or outside the shores of your country. And one of the issues that are taken to ICC are matters that could lead to anarchy, like seen in Ivory Coast,” he said.

Hate campaign: First Lady to keep away from North

First Lady Patience Jonathan’s utterance may have forced her to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential women rally in the North.

She has since assigned the wife of the Vice President, Hajiya Amina Namadi Sambo, to stand in for her in the remaining northern states that are to host the rally.

This explained her absence at yesterday’s Minna, Niger State capital rally and Adamawa State’s, which was held on Wednesday.

Party sources said the decision of the First Lady not to attend rallies in the North states was informed by a security report that disparaging comments on some northern leaders and elders as well as the region did not go down well with the people.

One said: “The First Lady was strongly advised to avoid attending the remaining PDP presidential women rally in the North. Her utterances offended the sensibilities of the people. The only way not to aggravate the tension already generated by her derogatory statement was to keep away from campaigning in the region.

“Thank God she has gone to some states in the region, the Vice President wife will have to stand in for her in the remaining states.”

Meanwhile, the First Lady has urged Nigerians to embrace peace in their conducts before, during and after the forthcoming general elections.

She spoke yesterday during the PDP women rally in Minna through Hajiya Amina Sambo.

The First Lady told the crowd: “Let me urge you to continue to preach peace to our children. Nigeria needs them because they are the future. Let no one use them as thugs to achieve selfish aims.”

Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu said the PDP government was ready to give the youths the chance to prove their worth.

He said the PDP governorship candidate, Alhaji Umar Nasko, would be the one to continue with the developmental efforts of the past 16 years.

“This is a young man that will turn 40 tomorrow (today) and he has already been trained for greater positions. The party was sure of his abilities for the task.

“As we have been saying, let peace reign in the country. The other parties must not be allowed to provoke us. That is what they want but we will not….

“It is they that want what is in our hands. But the people have seen what we are doing and will vote us at all level come March and April,” Aliyu said.

  • Hate speech: APC reports First Lady to NHRC, ICC

Hate speech: APC reports First Lady to NHRC, ICC

First Lady Patience Jonathan has been reported to the International Criminal Council (ICC) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) Campaign Organisation accused the First Lady of threatening the lives of members with her pronouncement at a rally in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, when she asked PDP supporters to “stone” anyone who came to the state asking for “change.

The Organisation’s Director-General and Rivers State Governor Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi said in a letter of complaint is expected to be dispatched to the ICC, NHRC and the Inspector General of Police today: “Change, as the entire country must know by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state.”

He likened some of Mrs. Jonathan’s inciting statements and conduct during the political campaign season, to those of Mrs Simone Gbagbo, wife of the former President of Cote D’Ivoire, Mr. Laurent Gbagbo, prior to that country’s 2010 election. He recalled that the ICC indicted Mrs. Gbagbo for her part in planning to perpetrate brutal attacks,  including murder, rape, and sexual violence, on her husband’s political opponents in the wake of the 2010 election.

The governor added:  ”Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government, as the position of First Lady is not recognised by the Nigerian constitution. But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.”

Mrs Jonathan said at another rally in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, that Gen. Muhammadu Buhari the APC’s presidential candidate, is “brain dead.” That statement has equally attracted condemnation by many Nigerians.

Amaechi added that Mrs. Jonathan’s “incontrovertible hate speech” not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also goes completely against the Abuja Peace Accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates Gen. Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.

“PDP supporters in the state who may not know better could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against APC members,” Amaechi said.

He urged the police to plan emergency measures to protect the lives and property of APC members in Calabar and the entire Cross River State.

  • Hate speech: APC to file complaint against First Lady to ICC

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) will on Monday file a formal complaint against First Lady, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, for allegedly calling on PDP supporters to “stone” anyone who come to the state asking for change.

The letter of complaint signed by Rivers State Governor and Director General of APCPCO, Rotimi Amaechi, will be dispatched to the International Criminal Court (ICC), the Inspector General of the Nigeria Police (IG) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), among others.

According to Governor Amaechi, “Change, as the entire country must know by now, is the slogan of the APC – the rallying cry of a political party that wishes to bring hope of greater and better things to come for Nigeria and Nigerians. By her statement, Mrs. Jonathan was clearly calling on PDP supporters in Calabar to attack supporters and campaigners of the APC in the state.”
The APCPCO in a statement by its Director of Publicity Garba Shehu likened some of Mrs. Jonathan’s statements and conduct during this political campaign season, to those of Mrs Simone Gbagbo, wife of the former president of Cote D’Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, prior to that country’s 2010 election.

” Mrs. Jonathan does not occupy any formal office in the Nigerian government, as the position of First Lady is not recognized by the Nigerian constitution. But Mrs. Gbagbo’s case shows the ICC’s awareness of how someone beyond formal governmental and military hierarchies can be identified as responsible for serious international crimes.”

The APCPCO pointed out that Mrs. Jonathan’s incontrovertible hate speech not only contravenes the laws of the land, but also goes completely against the Abuja Peace Accord jointly signed by the two presidential candidates, General Muhammadu Buhari and President Goodluck Jonathan – a gesture which is aimed at forestalling violence before, during and after the 2015 elections.
“PDP supporters in the state who may not know better could easily yield themselves to the First Lady’s admonition and embark on a process of wanton stoning and other attacks against APC members,” Governor Amaechi said.
The APCPCO also called on the Nigeria Police to put in place emergency measures to protect the life and property of APC members in Calabar and the entire Cross River State.

  • First Lady seeks women’s votes

The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, has urged women to vote for her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan.

Speaking yesterday in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, during a rally to mobilise  women support for  Jonathan’s re-election, she said it was only her husband that could take care of their interest.

Mrs Jonathan said past governments restricted women to the kitchen, but President Jonathan changed the status quo by appointing them into leadership positions and empowering them to take care of the home front.

“Goodluck set up Youwin programme for the women so that they can get money to trade and take care of their children. He also set up Sure-P to create employment for youths and women as well as taking care of pregnant women in the hospital till delivering period at no cost. Jonathan is the only one that can take care of women effectively,” she said.

According to her, APC and its presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), has nothing to offer because he was there before and could not offer any change. She added that the APC presidential candidate is old and should give way for the younger ones.

Forum to First Lady: justify 2.4m votes’ demand from Rivers

A group, the Nigerian Democratic Awareness Forum (NIDAF), has urged the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, to tell the people of Rivers State where the 2.4 million votes she boasted would be given to President Goodluck Jonathan will come from.

The group noted that either Mrs Jonathan had no knowledge of how many people had their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in the state or had a secret agenda to influence the rigging of next month’s elections.

On Wednesday, during the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) presidential rally in Rivers State, Dame Patience Jonathan told the party’s supporters that the state would give the President 2.4 million votes on February 14.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state capital, the group’s leader, Comrade Obiajunwo Dike, said Mrs Jonathan’s comment showed that the PDP planned to rig next month’s general elections.

He said when PDP dominated Rivers State in 2011 elections, the state could not give Jonathan 2.4 million votes.

Dike wondered how the state could produce such huge votes for one party when two strong parties are currently contesting for the state’s votes.

He said: “With the desperation in the mind of the PDP, I know that Dame Patience Jonathan was speaking the minds of PDP in Rivers State. But it is time to ask the First Lady to explain to Rivers people how she is going to get 2.4 million votes for her husband.

“We are calling on the police, the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies to investigate this comment because this is not the first time she has been boasting that PDP must win in Rivers State, even without proving how the winning is going to be.”

  • Dickson, TAN and First Lady

The Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria (TAN), a campaign group for President Goodluck Jonathan’s re-election bid, is enmeshed in controversies with Governor Seriake Dickson.

Keen observers expected TAN and the government to work harmoniously on the Jonathan project. TAN, at the national level, is known for its passionate and fierce campaign for Jonathan’s re-election. The group is believed to have been founded to explore, expound and express the benefits of the President’s Transformation Agenda.

Dickson is not only the kinsman of Mr. President, he is also a Jonathanian advocate who from the inception of his administration vowed to pursue Ijaw national interest with the protection and projection of Jonathan’s Presidency the key element of the Ijaw affairs. In words and deeds, people believe that Dickson has not deviated from his averred support for the President.

Despite similarities of purpose, TAN and Dickson have been living like cat and mouse Where then is the missing link? In fact, the subject of acrimony is  the fate of the Creek Haven, sobriquet for the state’s Government House, in 2016. The governorship election holds in the state in 2016 and it is expected that the governor will be seeking a reelection.

There are reasons within the state government to believe that TAN has an ulterior motive in Bayelsa beyond the purpose of galvanising support for Jonathan’s reelection in February. The group is said to be working to ensure that the governor does not return to the Creek Haven. The group’s body language is also confirming the suspicions of the governor and his camp.

First, was the sudden entrance of the group into a state considered by many people as lacking meaningful opposition to challenge Jonathan’s reelection. Curiously, the group has started gaining ground and setting up permanent structures in the state. Already, it has secured an edifice as its secretariat along the Isaac Boro Expressway in Yenagoa. The group is also making plans to inaugurate the secretariat.

If the reelection of the President is the reason for TAN’s coming into the state, what then does it need a permanent structure for a secretariat especially considering the fact that the Presidential election is next month? This is the question agitating the minds of the camp of Dickson.

Besides, the camp of the governor also reasons that TAN’s agenda in the state is a suspect following the sudden change in the group’s leadership structure.

Initially, when Jonathan’s re-election was its only mission, the group was headed by the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Local Government Commission and former Speaker of the old Rivers State House of Assembly, Chief Talford Ongolo. But Ongolo and some loyalists of the governor woke up one day to discover that they had been unceremoniously stripped of their functions.

The restructuring of TAN’s leadership undoubtedly became an issue and fueled the existing suspicion. Matters came to a head when it was reported that the interest and ambition of the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, was the reason behind TAN’s rebirth.

Dame Patience is said to have an ambition to remove Dickson and replace him with her friend and domestic aide to the President, Mr. Waripamowei Dudafa.

Her sudden resignation as a super Permanent Secretary in the state’s civil service, her alleged influence in the posting of the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Valentine Ntomchukwu, to the state and her other underground activities are said to be geared towards realizing this ambition.

Therefore, TAN is said to be the first lady’s vehicle to drive her Dickson-must-go ambition. On this premise, TAN is suspected to be repositioning itself for the task of leading anti-Dickson’s campaigns, formulating and executing strategies to outsmart the governor and kick him out of his seat.

Since the TAN imbroglio started, there has been sharp division in the state chapter of PDP. Opponents and enemies of the governor have run to TAN to form a formidable force with the First Lady against Dickson. The group is now headed by the First Lady’s associate and former deputy Governor, Chief Werinipre Seibarugu.

The governor issued a pack-and-go order to TAN. Before pronouncing the order, the governor had accused TAN of subversion. But TAN fired back at the governor  saying he lacked the powers to order its exit from the state. It is only hoped that the gladiators will not use the innocent blood of the masses to settle their political scores.

My quarrel with Amaechi, by First Lady

First Lady Dame Patience Jonathan claimed yesterday her quarrel with Governor Rotimi Amaechi was because of her love for the Okrika.

She urged the people of Okirika to vote overwhelmingly for President Goodluck Jonathan and Nyesom Ezenwo Wike.

Mrs Jonathan spoke in Okirika yesterday during the PDP governorship rally. She was accompanied by Wike, his running mate, Dr Ipalibo Banigo,  Minister of Sports Dr Tammy Danagogo and Senate Committee on Defence Chairman George Sekibo.

Mrs Jonathan said Wike remained the hope of equitable distribution of development projects across Rivers State.

She noted that she had issues with the Amaechi administration following the alleged plot to destroy all the Okirika waterfront and redistribute the land to other people.  She said if people vote Amaechi’s anointed candidate, he would effect Amaechi’s land policy.

Mrs Jonathan said: “It is a done deal. The Okirika people are for the PDP. Our votes will all go for the PDP. I am here to say when the time comes, our people will line up for PDP.

“For development to be consolidated, we must vote for President Jonathan, Barrister Wike, Senator Sekibo and other PDP candidates. The President will continue the projects that will develop Rivers State. PDP means well for Nigeria.  PDP is the answer.”

She urged the Okirika people to “remain resolute in their resolve to ensure that PDP candidates emerge victorious”.

Mrs Jonathan said Wike would enhance development in Okirika and ensure that the people were involved in the development process.

She said: “It was because Amaechi decided not to develop Okirika that I refused to work with him. I will never allow anyone to drive Okirika people to ocean. I will always be with the Okirika people.”

Wike said he would never destroy the Okirika waterfronts.

He said he would sandfill Okirika to ensure that more people had access to land for vital economic development.

“We will create a development-friendly environment in Rivers State and in Okirika, we will enhance the participation of the people in governance. Rivers State is for PDP and PDP will win all the elections. The APC has failed the people and there is no way that they can win in our state,” he said.

Rivers State PDP Chairman Felix Obuah thanked the Okirika people for their overwhelming support for the PDP.

The last baby of 2014 was delivered by Mrs Olushile at 8:36pm on December 31.

The JCI president, Kunle Odelusi, presented the gifts to the babies alongside Mrs Mimiko. Thanking the donors, ýthe mother of the first baby, Mrs Tayo Hamefuli,ý described her baby as a bundle of joy, saying he was lucky. She hailed the state government for providing qualitative and affordable healthcare for the people.

Odelusi said: “It is our tradition to go out every New Year to present gifts to the first babies of the year. This is part of our resolve to make life meaningful to the average man on the street.”
