    In celebration of International Women’s Day (IWD), renowned businesswoman and philanthropist Folorunsho Alakija has urged the global community to accelerate progress toward gender equality.

    Alakija emphasised that words alone are no longer sufficient and that collective action is necessary to drive meaningful change.

    As the world acknowledges the strides made toward gender equity, it is clear that significant work remains to be done.

    Alakija’s call to action stresses the importance of moving beyond rhetoric and taking concrete steps to address the disparities and inequalities faced by women globally.

    To achieve true gender equity, Alakija, on Instagram, advocates for the removal of structural barriers that hinder women’s progress.

  • Women gear up for Folorunsho Alakija’s Flourish Africa Conference

    Flourish Africa, a women’s empowerment platform dedicated to encouraging women to reach their God- ordained potentials, is finishing its plans to host women across the continent for the Flourish Africa Conference.

    Scheduled for July 20th, 2019 in Lagos, Nigeria, the conference, which is the third in its series is expected to host a thousand women from Africa with the theme “motion to disrupt.”

    Folorunsho Alakija, Founder, Flourish Africa, revealed that this year’s event would be an encounter with destiny as more meaningful networking opportunities and impact would be created through the platform.

    “Over the years, the Flourish Africa conference has impacted, transformed and empowered women across Africa which is a testimony of the fact that the platform is a worthy cause for women. This year’s event would be an encounter with destiny,” she said.

    She further stated the 2019 conference would provide a bigger opportunity for women to converge and share, network and encourage each other.

    She urged women to grab the opportunity to be there.

    In 2017, the maiden edition of the conference ignited a movement of gamechangers amongst the participants while 2018 saw the women breaking through. This year, the women would be setting a motion to disrupt.

    The testimonies of the conference since inception have warmed the hearts of women across the continent, which has assured them of the Founder’s vision of impacting the lives of women to become role models who will break through every barrier and become what God has ordained them to be.

    The President of Africa’s Young Entrepreneur (A.Y.E), Mr Summy Smart has reiterated that the only way to harness poverty in Africa is that people should engage themselves in entrepreneurship activities. He said this in a press conference held at Fidelity place Victoria Island Lagos.

    In a bid to solidify the existing mutual and beneficial relationship between A.Y.E and Fidelity bank, an agreement was signed recently by both organizations in other to strengthen the ongoing efforts and initiatives of A.Y.E in developing and supporting future business leaders across the continent and also to tackle poverty in Africa, partnering the organization on their event tagged “Networking with the Giants Conference” scheduled for later this month.

    The annual conference, according to Smart, is an exceptional platform for some of the world’s most accomplished business leaders to network with perhaps the brightest entrepreneurs in Africa With a network of over 12.6 million members in Africa and 1.6 million members from Nigeria.

    Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of Fidelity Bank, Mr Nnamdi Okonkwo, said the essence of the partnership was “because we share the same ideas on entrepreneurship and job creation in line with the Federal Government’s economic diversification plan, more employment opportunities lead to poverty alleviation, improved food security and GDP growth.

    “People should endeavour to use their intellect and creativity to see what they can do for the development of the country. Also, the government cannot be responsible for everything,” he noted.

    The forthcoming A.Y.E conference is expected to welcome prominent business leaders such as Africa’s richest woman, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, former governor of Lagos State Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a host of others who members of the public will be able to meet one on one without protocol, the president stated.

    Alerted that some unscrupulous elements were using her foundation’s name to defraud unsuspecting organisations, especially banks, she has invited the EFCC into the matter. Already, one Vincent Ayewah has been fingered as the suspected culprit. The employee of the foundation allegedly forged an identity card with the intention of defrauding people with it.

    With the conspiracy of a few others, he was said to have been able to operate for a while before Alakija discovered that something was amiss and raised the alarm. Now on trial for conspiring to defraud the foundation of N3 million, Ayewah and other accused persons face the prospect of a lengthy time in prison.

    The solution to the current social economic situation in the country and the continent is the need for a generation of ground breaking, resilient and adaptable young people.

    Executive Director, FAMFA Oil, Folorunsho Alakija stated this at the weekend, during the Grand Finale of Africa’s Young Entrepreneurs Empowerment Nigeria (AYEEN) 2016, in Lagos.

    She said there is need for youths that can create a great future at the award and celebrate 500 AYEEN beneficiaries.

    AYEEN identifies and empowers the most innovative solutions and economically viable businesses that have the potential and passion in converting the present level of their business to becoming ‘the next big thing’ in Africa regardless of the sector.
    Alakija, who is AYE’s Chief Executive Matron, noted that the transition from education to employment has become a matter of luck and sometimes ‘who you know’. She said private entrepreneurship is the only solution that guarantees the progress of youths and the economy.
    “If we give youths the opportunity the future is going to be bright,” she said.
    She said AYEEN and its programs remains the foremost entrepreneurship programme in Africa, adding that thousands of business owned by its members has benefited from grants including financial literacy
    programs, specialised skills training, soft loans from financial partners and structural support.
    She said the 500 beneficiaries have showcased the characteristics of innovation, passion and research in their business fortunes.
    She encouraged the beneficiaries  to challenge themselves by being relevant and dynamic in the face of the current recession.
    “Use your God given favours to change the lives of others through job creation. We will continue to monitor your business progress and render the necessary support,” she said.
    She added that the beneficiaries should not take likely what they have being empowered with, but should use it judiciously, be focused, look and plan ahead, and not mess around.
    She urged them to touch the lives of others by setting up businesses that will enable them to give back to the society. “They must work hard, build on and enlarge the money, make the best and the most of
    it,” she said.
    Alakija noted that the scale of the African and Nigerian challenges is large, saying that effective collaboration is needed to ensure a sustainable entrepreneurship future.
    She said this year’s AYEEN programme has experienced a massive turn out of entrepreneurs from Borno state, noting that despite their challenges of terrorism and internal displacement, they had the
    courage to apply and request for support.
    According to her, AYEEN has extended its mandate from entrepreneurship to include humanitarian support by the launch of ’empower Borno project’ in partnership with the Borno state
    government.
    She said the initiative would drive entrepreneurship evolvement in the state and change the state of violence. She urged all to support the initiative.
    President/ Founder Africa’s Young Entrepreneurs (AYE), Smart Francis said the beneficiaries will turn around and transform the economy of the country to drive us out of the current economic recession.
    According to him, entrepreneurs are the strength of Nigeria. “We must use our strength to overcome our weakness; Nigeria has determined entrepreneurs and they must put in energy to develop the nation.”
    He urged government to make entrepreneurship activity its priority, saying it is something that can transform a nation.
    “Government needs to create a system that is friendly to entrepreneurs and one that will enable them strive.”
    He appealed to government and other organisations to partner with AYE to enable them do more.
    He urged entrepreneurs never to give up, adding that if they fail, they should move on because challenges will come and go.
    He said the beneficiaries are given the grants in different sessions, adding that there is no limit to what amount can be given as grant but it depends on what the business is about and how much is needed.
    He said the business must be innovative, have the ability to move Nigeria forward and create jobs.

    Right now, this pretty billionaire is building her dream home at Modupe Alakija Crescent, a highbrow street named after her in Ikoyi, Lagos. The street was formerly called Ikoyi Crescent. The dream house is being built by Julius Berger. So huge is the project that Julius Berger had to first build a mini-construction site before commencing work. The project is being handled by her property company, Dayspring Property Development, a construction company co-owned by her husband, Modupe Alakija. The construction is a three-floor residential building with a 16-floor mixed use tower beside it.
