  • Avoid distractions, FUTA VC advises freshers

    The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Prof Joseph Fuwape, has advised freshly admitted students to be focused and not allow distractions derail them from achieving their lofty academic dreams.

    He spoke during the 36th Matriculation for over 3,629 students admitted into various programmes of the university for the 2018/2019 academic session.

    The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development, Prof Phillip Oguntund, urged the students to be law abiding and respect constituted authority.

    “Within the next couple of years you would be expected to go through intensive training, not only in learning but also in character to build a successful and rewarding future for yourselves.

    “Shun all forms of distractions and give diligence to studies as that is the primary reason you are here. Identify with people of great minds and chose for yourselves mentors that will add positive values to your lives among your senior colleagues,” he said.

    Fuwape reiterated FUTA’s zero tolerance for all acts inimical to peace on campus, especially thuggery, vandalism, stealing, hooliganism and cultism.

    He warned that the University would not hesitate to deal with recalcitrant offenders within the ambit of its regulations.

    If in need, Fuwape advised the students to visit the Counselling unit of the Students’ Affairs Division.

    “The Students Affairs Division of the university is your second home. Make proper use of the place whenever you have issues bothering you,” he said.

    The Registrar, Mr. Richard Arifalo, administered the matriculation oath on the students.

  • Shun misconduct, VC tells freshers

    Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University Prof Sam Guobadia, has enjoined the newly admitted students of the institution to desist from all forms of misconduct and embrace the virtues of Godliness and excellence.

    Speaking at the institution  matriculation, Prof Guobodia urged the new students to be law-abiding and respect their lecturers.

    His words: “I charge you all to make the most of the opportunity afforded you by your parents and guardians. Kindly ensure that you attend classes, shun all forms of deviant behaviours and other vices, and focus on why you are here. At Benson Idahosa University, we have zero tolerance for any form of misconduct, and we do not hesitate to sanction them.”

    Guobadia also admonished the matriculating students to be security-conscious and be wary of the friends they keep.

    “I wish to assure you of adequate security on both campuses of ours. We, however, plead with you not to hesitate to report any suspicious activities to the Dean of Student Affairs, security officers or indeed, any staff of the university for immediate response.”

    He explained that the institution has lived up to expectation since it was established, adding that discipline and academic excellence with Godliness, have been their watch words.

  • Varsity warns freshers against cultism, others

    New students of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) have been advised to shun vices as the university has zero tolerance for cultism, hooliganism, indecent dressing and other social vices. They have also been advised to remember the homes they come from if they are to excel in life.

    A senior staff of the Human Resources Unit of the Registry Department, UNILORIN, Mr Kabir Adewoyin, gave the advice while answering questions on a popular Yoruba current affairs programme: ‘Oro to nlo’,  on UNILORIN 89.3 FM.

    Adewoyin, who congratulated the students for scaling the admission hurdles into the university, advised all parents to caution their children against joining bad groups and unregistered associations.

    He said any student found wanting would be expelled because students are awarded certificates if they were found worthy in character and learning.  He said after the official orientation course any student who failed to comply with the rules and regulations of the institution would be shown the way out.

    Appreciating the management of the University of Ilorin for sponsoring training and retraining of staff of the institution,  Adewoyin described the tenure of the school Registrar, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, who is the National Chairman of the Association of Registrars of Nigerian Universities (ARNU), as a blessing to the university.

    Adewoyin said the weekly Registry seminar and other forms of staff development programmes he initiated have put workers of the university, especially the Registry department, ahead of their contemporaries in other universities.

    Provost warns freshers against cultism

    Secret cultism and hooliganism will not be tolerated at the College of Education in Nsukka, Enugu State, fresh students have been told.

    The institution’s Acting Provost, Dr Okwudili Nwosu, said the college has zero tolerance for examination malpractice, noting that anyone caught would be expelled.

    Nwosu read the riot act to the students at the institution’s 10th matriculation. He said the college had a mandate to impart academic knowledge and morality to students, adding that any act that could compromise the school’s objectives would not be tolerated.

    He said: “As fresh students, it is obvious that you do not know much of the school rules and regulations.  But this is an opportunity for you to know that the college strictly frowns on cultism and criminal groups. We have zero tolerance policy on vice, such as examination malpractice, sorting of lecturers either in cash or kind, violent act as well as drug addiction.”

    The acting provost told the students they would have unrestricted access to facilities that would assist them in achieving their academic goals, stressing that management had provided an e-library and Internet network to help students in research.

    Nwosu added that the college has open-door policy, urging students to share their problems with school counsellors for advice. He reminded them to be conscious of their primary aims in the college, saying should not be seen as a playing ground.

    “The college has sourced over 1,500 textbooks and 500 international journals to stuff our e-library to enhance quality research in line with standards. I advise you to face your studies and works hard to achieve excellence,” he said.

    Some of the freshers could not hide their joy at being admitted into the college when they shared their experience with CAMPUSLIFE.

    Favour Ishiwu of the Department of Social Studies said she chose the college to build a career in teaching, noting that she had been nursing ambition to become a teacher to impart knowledge to the young ones.

    Anthony Eze of the Department of English said he had a desire to study education-related course, which was why he chose the college to realise his dream.

    Over 300 were admitted into the college, which runs an affiliate programme with Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Uli, Anambra State.

  • FUTA VC urges freshers to be enterprising

    Beyond being studious and obeying rules and regulations, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Adebiyi Daramola, has counselled new students to demonstrate industry, enterprise and thrift.

    Daramola spoke during the matriculation of 4,772 students admitted for the 2016/2017 academic session.

    Having scaled the hurdle to be admitted out of 19,000 candidates who applied to the university, Daramola said the students ought to work hard.

    “It is, indeed, a pride to be admitted into FUTA where you will be expected to study very hard and be certified worthy in character and learning to build a successful and rewarding future for yourselves,” he said.

    The VC urged them to key into FUTA’s vision to be a world-class university of technology and centre of excellence in teaching, research and learning; respect the matriculation oath; and shun anti-social acts.

    The Registrar, Dr Mrs. Modupe Ajayi, administered the matriculation oath on the students.

    Wisdom Udugba of department of Biotechnology described the occasion as joyful. He promised to live up to the matriculation oath and work hard to graduate with a first class.

     

  • Your success depends on your character, Rector tells freshers

    The Rector of Benson Idahosa School of Basic and Applied Studies, Dr Mark Ighile, has told fresh students to be of good conducts.

    Ighile spoke during the freshers’ matriculation held at the School of Postgraduate Studies Hall. The students were admitted for diploma in professional programmes being offered by the school.

    The rector told them that their success depended on their attitude and frame of mind,  adding that only students with right frame of mind would excel. He urged the freshers to focus on their studies and have clear pictures of what they intended to achieve.

    “Those who are focused will end up becoming subjects of focus,” he said.

    Speaking on the theme: Winning the race before you, the rector advised the students to use the opportunity of their admission to strive for excellence. He said management would ensure strict compliance of the school regulations. He admonished the freshers to abide by the oath they took and show good behaviour.

    According to him, the essence of the matriculation is to provide an opportunity to fresh students to learn the do’s and don’ts of the school.

    Ighile assured parents of the school’s readiness to train their children with the state-of- the art facilities and modern knowledge.

    While administering the oath on the students, Registrar, Mr Enoma Aruevbose, advised them to be obedient and shun unruly behaviour.

  • Provost counsels freshers

    Newly-admitted students of the Adeyemi College of Education (ACE) Ondo, have been advised to pay more attention to their studies to excel in their academic pursuit.

    The advice was given by the Provost of the institution, Prof Olukoya Ogen, through his deputy, Dr. Samuel Akintunde, at the 2016/ 2017 orientation programme organised for the students.

    He said studying to earn good grades would boost their chances of good employment in the globally competitive labour market after their studies.

    Ogen said they were lucky to be admitted out of about 8,000 candidates who made the college their choice in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and advised the students to be of good behaviour always and refrain from negative acts that could truncate their dreams.

    Stressing the importance of peaceful co-existence, Ogen advised the new students to always be their brothers’ keeper.

    Dean, Students Affairs (DSA), Mr Olaniyi Olaluwoye, thanked the College Management for financing the programme to familarise students with school life.

    He assured the students that the College would sustain the culture of academic excellence for which it is known.

    The programme featured lectures on various topics like, “The College Community and You and The College Organogram”, ”Students and Financial Interactions in the College”, as well as ”Rules and Regulations Governing Students Registration for Courses and Assessment Procedures, Calculation of GPA/ CGPA, Lectures and Continuous Assessment” presented by the Registrar, Mr Felix Aderinboye, represented by Mrs. Olufisayo Fakorede, Deputy Registrar (Division of Pensions and Staff Matters).

    In attendance were the Deputy Provost, Dr Samuel Akintunde; Bursar, Mr. Ganiyu Abdul and Acting Librarian, Mr Akinade Awoyemi.

    VC to freshers: pay attention to entrepreneurship

    Fresh students of the Obong University in Obong Ntak, Akwa Ibom State, have been advised to pay attention to vocational training and entrepreneurship classes. The trainings are deliberate effort to prepare them to be job creators, rather than being job seekers, said the Vice-Chancellor (VC), Prof Udoudo Ekanemesang.

    The VC, who spoke at the institution’s 10th matriculation, said the staggering statistics of unemployment made it imperative for students of higher institutions to show interest in acquiring skills that would increase their worth and chances of getting jobs after they leave school.

    Prof Ekanemesang noted that the complexity 21st Century jobs could only be understood by graduates who developed critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, which the VC described as “selling points” of entrepreneurs.

    He said: “Apart from the efforts we have made to ensure that you are taught all the skills that will help you succeed in the different programmes you are studying, the management has also made deliberate and sustainable efforts to equip our Center for Entrepreneurial Studies with the needed manpower and facilities necessary for you to succeed.

    “It is our expectation that you will reciprocate these efforts by taking the entrepreneurship studies seriously. The reason for the introduction of entrepreneurship into the curriculum of Nigerian universities is to equip students with skill set that will make them self-reliant and to structure their thought patterns in the direction of providing jobs at the completion of their programmes.”

    The VC urged the freshers to shun unethical practices and live within the dictates of the school’s regulations, warning that management would not hesitate to punish any student who contravenes the school rules.

    He said: “It is in your interest to shun all unethical practices that may be detrimental to your stay on campus. I urge you to make the best use of the opportunity by spending your time wisely and making your academic endeavor your focus. The certificates of this university are only awarded to students, who are found worthy in character and learning.”

    The immediate past Deputy VC for Academics of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), Prof Enomfon Akpan, in pre-matriculation lecture, advised the students time management. He tolfd them their stay o the campus would be divided into different categories of time, stressing that how they are able to manage and respond to the demands of each time would determine the outcome of their stint in the school.

    Highpoint was the administration of the matriculation oath on the freshers.

     

  • LASU Muslim students hold symposium for freshers

    New students of the Lagos State University (LASU) have benefited from the orientation powered by the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, LASU branch (MSSN-LASU).

    The event, which held at the institution’s MBA Hall in Ojo campus was titled: ‘The true ambassadors: Muslim students as a focus’.

    One of the speakers, Prof. L. M.  Adetona of Religious Studies Department, who spoke on the topic: ‘Propagating Al-Islam: The role of an undergraduate,’ urged the students to always create time for the work of Allah and serve him more.

    Dr. Abdul-Lateef Kelani of the Faculty Law, who talked about ‘Academic excellence, students’ activism and productivity after school: Understanding its nexus’, advised the students to be involved in all university extracurricular activities, including unionism, religious groups, among others.

    He said such activities would train them to be productive after school, adding that Muslims should strive to acquire knowledge, academic excellence and strike a balance to yield good results.

    Mr O. J. Tijani of the Accounting Department gave a presentation on the computation of Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) and its relevance in a student’s life before and after exams.

    He urged the students to focus on building their CGPA.

    Being a first class graduate of the institution, Tijani shared his success story with the students, noting that his case was exceptional, as he did not start with a first class but ended one.

    He advised the students to grade themselves before exams to serve as guide for self-assessment when the actual grade comes, warning that as the level increases, building CGPA becomes more cumbersome.

    At the interactive session, a student, Abdul Akeem from the Faculty of Art, asked how a Muslim could cope with students’ politics without foregoing his Islamic principles. He was advised to be an ambassador of Islam, defend and promote its principles.

    Mallam Alabidun Mafuz, the Amir of the group, also admonished the fresh students to be part of the MSSN-LASU and play active roles in advancing the society.

  • FUD VC warns freshers

    THE Vice Chancellor, Federal University Dutse (FUD) in Jigawa State, Prof Fatima Murtar, has warned new students to abstain from criminal activities, cultism and examination misconduct, which she said would not be tolerated.

    Prof Muktar gave the warning at the matriculation of 1,650 new students admitted for the 2016/2017 academic year.

    She said the number represented less than a third of those that applied to the institution.

    “This year a total 6,000 eligible candidates applied for admission in – to the institution, but the university has only 1500 carrying capacity,” she said.

    Being the 6th matriculation of the university, the VC said the institution had grown.

    “Indeed this is an occasion that the university management and all stakeholders cherish a lot because it is an indication that the institution is growing steadily and making progress despite the economic downturn in the country”.

    She noted that the university has three faculties (Agriculture, Art and Social Sciences) fully operational, while it awaits accreditation of its College of Medical and Health Sciences.

    “We have not been able to admit students into our Medical College and Basic Sciences.  This will be done after resource verification which we are expecting this month.  The failure to do that was because proper procedure for the establishment of the medical college and basic the medical science programme was not followed according to the National Universities Commission”, she said.

    Prof Muktar noted that the university is hoping to establish faculty of management sciences with programmes of B. Sc Banking and Finance, B. Sc Accountancy, B. Sc Business Management, B. Sc Taxation and B. Sc Actuarial Science in the 2017/2018 academic session.
