    Varsity welcomes freshers

    The management of the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba-Akoko, has held a three-day orientation for freshers. The event was held in the multipurpose hall.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Femi Mimiko, congratulated the freshers and urged them to jealously guard their admission.

    The Dean of Students’ Affairs (DSA), Prof Oluyemisi Adebowale, said the aim of the programme was to familiarise the students with the rules and regulations of the institution. She urged the students to see their admission as an opportunity to excel and prepare themselves adequately for life after graduation.

    She warned them to shun cultism, examination malpractices and other conducts that may endanger their studentship.

    The Bursar, Mr O. T. Akinterinwa, enlightened the students on some of the financial regulations of the institution, method of payment of tuition fee and the implications of non-adherence to payment deadlines. The Librarian, Mr W.A. Akinfolarin, on the other hand, explained the significance of the use of library to their academic excellence.

    Educating the students on academic programmes, the Deputy Registrar, Mr M.S. Ayeerun, enlightened them on how best to achieve academic excellence. The Director of the University Health Centre, Dr. E.I. Medunoye, told the students to always visit the centre whenever they have medical issues.

    On the last day of the programme, the students were taken on an excursion to Idanre Hills.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, one of the students, Blessing Bademosi, 100-Level Mass Communication, praised the management for the orientation.

    The secret of the success of Ekiti State University (EKSU) lies on the strong desire to always keep up high academic standards and moral probity, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Patrick Aina, has said.

    He made the statement during the matriculation ceremony held for freshers admitted into the institution through an affiliate programme with Adeniran Ogunsaya College of Education, Otto-Ijanikin, Lagos State, last Saturday. According to the VC, the freshers must maintain such high academic standards and moral probity.

    Prof Aina, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof Olugbenga Aribisala, warned that under no circumstance should any student be involved in examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse and vices that could jeopardise their academic pursuit in the university.

    The Provost of the College, Bashorun Wasiu Olalekan, echoed the Vice-Chancellor’s warning in his address. He said students must behave well on campus according to the matriculation oath they had taken.

    He, however, called on governments to increase funding for tertiary institutions to promote excellence.

    At another ceremony held in Michael Otedola College of Primary Education, Noforija, Epe, Prof Aina, who was represented by Prof Olugbenga Aribisala, urged the students to maintain the culture and tradition of EKSU, stressing that any violation of the matriculation oath would be met with serious sanctions.

    They all clutched brown envelops and transparent file folders, an indication that they are new students. Motorists had hectic time trying to access Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, as freshers moved in and out of the campus for registration.

    Some parents and guardians were seen helping their wards to move personal effects into the dormitories. Students, who did not have the luxury, created traffic logjam at the university entrance while trying to move their properties into the hostels.

    Following a circular released by management of the institution’s Computer Centre on the beginning of sales of scratch cards to pay the school fees, students thronged the office to purchase the cards.

    For ease of movement, the university commissioned some buses to convey the freshers into the school for registration.

    It is the business period for cyber cafés on the campus. The operators are making profit as students besieged the centres for online registration. Also, computer business centres and photocopy merchants are not left out in the profit harvest.

    An attendant in one of the cafés, Eldorado, who simply identified himself as Kunle, said: “It is so normal to have this high turnout. It is what we have been used to over the years. In our own capacity, we welcome them into the system by assisting them with registrations.”

    As they moved into their hostels, hall potters were available to receive them. The students were welcomed as the officials signed and stamped their hall placement slips.

    In Awolowo hall, it was gathered that the returning students welcomed the freshers into the hall with Aro (mockery) songs.

    A fresher, Gabriel Ayodeji, told CAMPUS LIFE: “After three years of seeking admission into OAU, I am happy that I am finally offered Social Studies to study for my Bachelor’s degree.” He hoped to graduate with excellence.

    Students’ Chemical Society of Nigeria (SCSN), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai chapter, has inducted freshers into the association. The freshmen, who were beaming with smiles, filled the conference room of the department to its capacity.

    The Head of the Chemistry department, Dr U.U. Elele, congratulated the students for their admission into the institution. She urged them to maximise their potentials and focus on their studies. She said: “In the history of this department, there has not been a student that graduated with a First Class result. You must all work hard to break the record.”

    Delivering a lecture entitled Role of chemists in chemical industries, Mallam Mohammed Mohammed, a lecturer in the department, highlighted areas where chemists’ expertise was needed.

    The highpoint of the programme was recitation of a poem by Lateefat Raufu and Fiona Ohai. The poem was the to educate the freshers on how chemistry recreates nature and affects the lives of individuals. A play let was also staged by Chuka Uzochukwu and his friends to enlighten students on how to behave and relate with other students and their lecturers.

    Mr Stephen Agwuncha, an examination officer, who spoke on exam ethics, showed the freshers how they could calculate Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). Mallam Abdullahi Mohammed also tutored the students on the use of library.

    Maximize your potentials, VC tells freshers

    |The Cross River State University of Science and Technology (CRUTECH) has matriculated 3,000 freshers. They took the oath at an exciting ceremony held on the campus.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof E. Eneobong, congratulated the freshers, saying it has always been his wish to contribute to the lives of the young people. He said he would not neglect his resolve to keep students of the institution on the right path.

    Prof Eneobong advised the students to unleash their academic potentials, adding: “As students, you should endeavour to challenge yourselves. You should look forward to those things that will add value to your lives not just because you see people doing them.”

    Charging lecturers to be alive with their responsibility, the VC said: “We should all put our hands together to mould the lives of the students. We should remain conscious of our expected responsibility in the institution.”

    Eneobong praised Governor Liyel Imoke for creating an enabling environment for the institution to thrive. He said: “Big thanks go to the governor for remaining faithful to his promises. He has also implemented all the salary agreements with the staff of the school, which completes his cycle of responsibility.”

    Aaron Awajimijian, 100 Level Education Biology, said his admission had presented him with an opportunity to be professional. Azu Lawson, 100-Level Architecture, promised to be focused and hardworking.

    The Association of Mass Communication Students (AMCOMS), University of Jos (UNIJOS) chapter, has freshers to be committed to their academic work.

    Its Staff Adviser, Mr Taye Obateru, asked the students to be focused and dedicated to their studies. He told the freshmen justify their admission because many wrote the entrance test to be in the department.

    He said: “You should count yourselves privileged for being among the few admitted into the department. You must, therefore, work hard to achieve excellence in your academic pursuit and also build and maintain positive relationship with your course mates and lecturers.”

    Also speaking, Mr Francis Ogbe, a staff of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), encouraged the students to remain focused and make themselves creative communicators in future.

    Hundung Gyang, an on-air personality with Peace FM, Jos, spoke on the need to have good communication skills as well as development of personal style, especially when presenting programmes and casting news. She noted that there were challenges that came with being journalists and advised the students to give their best despite challenges that may stand against their academic pursuit.

    The AMCOMS president, Adams Ijah, said the programme served as a platform for all students to interact. The event, which took place at the ASUU secretariat, was attended by guests from Plateau Radio Television (PRTV), Jos, journalists, lecturers and students of the department.

     

  • Mass Comm orientates freshers

    Orientation programme has been held for freshers admitted for communication courses in the Lagos State University (LASU). The ceremony was organised at the Adebola Adegunwa School of Communication, Ojo campus.

    The occasion was graced by lecturers in the School of Communication, Dean of the faculty, Prof Lai Osho, who was represented by the sub-Dean, Dr Ayodele Jocob and head, Information Communication Technology, Dr Olounifesi Suraj among others.

    The students learned how to achieve academic excellence during the orientation. Dr Ayodele, in his speech, said: “Knowing something about everything is the best for students in any academic field because this will make them to be versatile.”

    Dr Suraj, who taught the students how to calculate their Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate (CGPA), enjoined the students to be serious with their studies. The students were also lectured on dress code.

    The president of Communication Students Association (COSA) said: “I believe the purpose organising the orientation programme was fulfilled. For anything that is left unsaid, students can reach us so that we can channel their challenges to the appropriate quarters.”

    The management of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Television College (TV COLLEGE), Jos has organised a three-day orientation programme for the newly-admitted diploma students. The event was aimed at creating awareness on the rules and regulations of the institution.

    In his address on the first day, the Rector of the college, Dr Ayo Fasan, congratulated the new students for their admission, saying the privilege came with responsibilities which required the students to take their studies serious.

    He said: “For those of you who want to continue studies in the institution by re-applying for the degree programme, the beginning of the journey starts now and I urge you to give in your best to achieve success.”

    There were other speakers, who orientated the students on the first day. Prof Ema Ema spoke on the dangers of drugs and substance abuse and Hon Gambo Nbilamut spoke on the career opportunities in the media circle.

    The second day featured pep talks on decency and good dressing by the Registrar of the college, Hajiya Hadiza Lawal, and exams malpractice and its attendant consequences by Mrs Phoebe Rishante among other speakers.

    There was also “know your environment” walk when the students were conducted round the college to know the lecture halls, studio, library, female hostel, language laboratory clinic and canteen. This was followed by a sport event organised in the evening.

    One of the new students, Emmanuel Idu, appreciated the management for the orientation programme.

    He said: “I can now move freely knowing what to do and where to go every time. I also know where to access help and get information.”

    Another student, Mary Joseph, said: “The orientation programme has provided me the opportunity to know almost all the staff of the institution as well as meeting my new course mates. I can’t wait to start lectures fully because everything looks exciting here.”

    About 250 students were admitted into the departments of Television Journalism, Television Production and Television Engineering departments.
