  • Friends desert governor over beef with EFCC

On the Nigerian political scene, the fear of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has become the beginning of wisdom for friends of a controversial governor of one of the states in the South West. Most of his friends have vanished into thin air, while others who flaunted their relationship with him are now denying having anything to do with him.

Before now, the home and office of the one-week-one-trouble politician were constantly filled with friends, politicians, contractors, favour seekers and hangers on. But now, his office is nothing better than a deserted island just like his home.

The impending wrath of the EFCC has caused him to withdraw from the public glare until things cool off.

  • Mugabe’s Friends in the Senate

Zimbabwe’s nonagenarian president, Robert Mugabe, stands out in many respects that are not too flattering. He is arguably the world’s oldest head of state, and has been the only ruler of his country since independence from Britain in 1980. Not that there haven’t been several elections in the country, but Mugabe always returned as winner in very disputable circumstances characterised by allegations of vote-rigging, human rights abuses and mass emigration amidst sharp economic decline. His current term of office was renewed in 2013. And even though he attained a ripe age of 92 this year, his appetite for political power is not at all diminished. Actually, he has already secured his party’s nomination to contest the next presidential election in 2018. And he could well return again as president unless Providence intervenes. You can’t foreclose that because the southern African country is a one-dominant-party state: the dominant party being the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF), while the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) is the main opposition party.

Pa Mugabe marked his 92nd birthday penultimate weekend with a $1.1million feast hosted by the ruling Zanu-PF. The lavish celebration featured the cutting of a huge birthday cake in drought-ravished Masvingo province, where 75 percent of the staple maize crop failed due to parched conditions. The agrarian province is hardest-hit in the worst drought experienced by Zimbabwe since the early 1990s, which leaves some 3million Zimbabweans presently in danger of starvation and has compelled Harare to declare a state of disaster in most rural areas. The government has also appealed for about $2.2billion in international aid to pay for grain and other food items to succour its citizens. But that didn’t stop Zanu-PF from treating Mugabe to the birthday party that was held in a large tent at the ‘Great Zimbabwe’ ruins – a UNESCO world heritage site built in the 13th Century. The nonagenarian ruler, accompanied by wife and children, cut the giant cake that was symbolically made to look like the ancient ruins, and he released 92 festal balloons amidst poetry readings, praise songs and chants hailing him as an African icon and visionary.

Mugabe’s tastes at his lavish birthday parties, which are a yearly national event in Zimbabwe, have never been subdued. In 2015, he reportedly had wild animals, including a young elephant, slaughtered and served to guests, infuriating wildlife conservationists. Other delicacies at that party included two buffaloes, two sables and five impalas donated by a local landowner, besides a stuffed lion and crocodile thrown in as extra gifts for the old man. Local media reported that Zanu-PF activists compelled teachers and villagers in Masvingo districts to make cash donations to their fundraiser to pay for this year’s celebrations. Critics were swift to condemn the festivity as an affront to penurious Zimbabweans, with opposition MDC saying the money spent should have been used to import maize and avert impending starvation in Masvingo province and other parts of the country. But Pa Mugabe dismissed the fear of starvation and, to the bargain, called the potential bluff of likely aid donors. “If aid, as I understand, is to be given on the basis that we accept the principle of gay marriages, then let that aid stay where it is. We don’t want it. It is rotten aid, filthy aid, and we won’t have anything to do with it,” he said during an hour-long speech at the birthday party penultimate Saturday.

I align fully with the moral of Pa Mugabe’s protestation against foreign aid with depraved terms, but the whole idea of outlandish birthday feasts in droughty seasons is another matter. Talk about Emperor Nero fiddling away when Rome is burning! When political leaders cocoon themselves in illusions of grandeur, they lose touch with reality and the urgency of the public mood and would most likely set store, outlandishly, by things that the public consider of least or, at best, fringe importance. This mindset, which is a species of what the late Chinua Achebe describes as ‘cargo cult mentality’ in his incisive literary midget, The Trouble With Nigeria, is present with us in the country today. It is apparently what is behind the controversial resolve of the Nigerian Senate to procure some 120 luxury vehicles for its functionaries and operations.

We must hasten to note that there have been modest attempts within the present administration to shun this diseased mindset, but there have also been spot manifestations of it at different maturity stages in other areas. For instance, President Muhammadu Buhari is reported to have rejected, among other things, a proposal for procurement of new vehicles for the Presidency as part of 2016 budgetary expenditure, owing obviously to the shambolic state of the Nigerian economy presently. Some discerning citizens have, nonetheless, observed a few outstanding budget heads that are affrontingly luxurious in the country’s present circumstance or out of touch with the immediate needs of most Nigerians, like culinary provisions and certain furniture items for Aso Rock. Nigeria is notoriously in economic dire straits at the moment, with shrinking national revenue in the face of global oil price losses, and with our currency value headed steeply southwards – leaving the bulk of the citizenry largely impoverished and contending with life-threatening inflationary pressures. In effect, basic survival is the concern of many citizens for now, and this is widely expected to be the goal of governance, at least in the short term.

Now, that is why the Senate’s seeming determination to carry through with its planned procurement of a fleet of luxury vehicles – at a cost in excess of 4billion naira – rankles. The prevailing narrative is that some of the vehicles are for the Senate President’s convoy, while the others are to be ‘pool vehicles’ for Senate committees to conduct their legislative oversight functions. By the ordinary notion of ‘pool vehicles,’ the 120 units of four-wheel drives that the Senate plans to procure is curious to most sensible people, as there are more than enough vehicles in that expenditure bill to go round all 109 members of the chamber without being pooled! Many have argued – not the least of them, former President Olusegun Obasanjo – that should Senate committees genuinely require service vehicles, a handful of pool buses that can be shared by committee members should do, rather than the fleet the chamber is working on acquiring. The Senate, to my knowledge, has not adduced any countervailing argument to justify its preference.

Truth be told: it is downright insensitive that the Senate seems determined to pull through with its vehicle procurement binge. It is bad enough that the legislative chamber recently took delivery of new vehicles for Senate President Bukola Saraki’s convoy, it is worse and mindless that it is pressing ahead with the acquisition of the remaining vehicles in defiance of public protestation. An attempted justification of the Senate President’s new acquisition by his spokesman recently didn’t wash. It is well understood as the spokesman argued, for instance, that the vehicles inherited by Dr. Saraki were old and malfunctioning. What is not understood is why brands so exotic and foreign must be acquired in replacement, at such a time as Nigeria is in at the moment. If the naira fares so badly against the dollar and other world’s convertible currencies, and the touted remedy is for Nigerians to as much as possible patronise Nigerian-made items, why would the Senate President not set a good example by ordering a Nigeria-assembled vehicle brand like Innoson, just like ‘Common Sense’ advocate and another member of the Senate, Ben Murray-Bruce, claims to have done in private capacity?

Leaders become undertakers when they drain out the residual life serum in their countries to indulge their fancies.

Airtel Red Hot: Winners for Dubai with friends, family

The winners of an all-expense paid trip to Dubai for four in the Airtel Red Hot Promo Season 3 have departed Nigeria for the United Arab Emirates (UAE) along with their excited family and friends.

Mrs. Victoria Obi, a business woman in Lagos, who emerged winner in the promo, selected her three kids, Mariam, Michael and Raphael to travel with her on the Dubai trip, while Mr. Nnamdi Oji, a web developer/entrepreneur, chose his friends Henry White, Joy Njoku and Cynthia Edokwe to join him.

A brief departure party was held for them at Ikeja, Lagos on Saturday, December 26, last year where the winners along with their family and friends were treated to some light refreshment shortly before they left Nigeria through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

All the winners admitted that the all-expense paid trip to Dubai was their first trip ever to the UAE.

Speaking during the party, Mrs. Victoria commended Airtel Nigeria for giving her and the children the opportunity to enjoy the Christmas holiday in a special way. She said: “The Airtel Red Hot Promo 3 came at the right time; my children are so excited to be going on this wonderful trip to Dubai.”

  • Friends, associates celebrate Moji Tejuosho at 50

Beauty, they say, captivates and mesmerises. You may not understand how true this is until you see Moji Tejuosho strutting around in feline grace. Like the fine wine that gets better with age, Moji only seems to look even more beautiful as she clocked age 50.

Every trace of her new age etched on her lovely face simply seems to enhance the sophistication she has mastered over the years. She waltzed into her new age with a depth of class that has left many in awe of her pedigree. The colourful wife of Prince Lanre Tejuosho is hardly given to fickle idolatry, unlike most women celebrities.

The venue of her 50th birthday wore colourful garbs as she was hosted by her husband and children to mark the occasion, joined by friends and other family members. The day coincided with the 28th wedding anniversary of the kind, warm and caring wife and mother.

  • Friends again after a bitter contest

The University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter of Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students (PANS) election was full of hate campaign and mudslinging. After the poll, the main contenders sued for peace, reports EZEKIEL EFEOBHOKHAN (500-Level Pharmacy).

Hugging opponents after election is a virtue that is not common among politicians, especially when the campaign was full of mudslinging. But, for the president-elect of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) chapter of Pharmaceutical Association of Nigeria Students (PANS), Benjamin Idiakhoa, extending an olive branch to challengers can be the beginning of peace.

After a keenly contested election, Benjamin approached his main opponent and classmate, Alex Eze, for a hug to end weeks of hate campaign. After the hug, it is believed all their differences would be buried and both contestants would sue for peace.

The election was marred by allegations and counter-allegations by candidates, who contested for the position of PANS president. They are Alex, Benjamin and Ikechuckwu Onwuakpa; all 400-Level students of the faculty.

In the heat of their campaigns, Alex, who had the support of students in lower classes, was accused of playing ethnic politics. He was called several unprintable names for engaging in what students called “dirty politics”.

But, Joshua Okpala, Alex’s supporter, said his candidate could not have played up ethnic sentiments to win election, noting that Alex was popular among students.

He said: “How do you accuse Alex of being tribalistic when majority of his supporters are  not Igbo students? The people that spread injurious allegation against Alex played bad politics and they are mischief-makers.”

While the controversy spread, some students in Alex’s camp also accused Benjamin of playing ethnic card. They wondered why Benjamin usually spoke his local dialect whenever he went on campaign.

Refuting the claims, Ifeanyi Ajudeonu, Benjamin’s campaign manager, said his candidate was popular and could not have used ethnicity to win the heart of students.

His words: “Benjamin has a lot ofIgbo students as friends and majority of them campaigned and voted for him. I am one of them. The other camps tried to influence our decision by reminding us of our tribe but we refused.”

  • Friends, admirers mourn Tunde Sobulo

True achievement consists in one’s earthly impact transcending one’s death. As the inimitable former Officer in Charge of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Lagos State Police Command, Tunde Sobulo’s death is breaking down emotions among his numerous admirers.

The late Commandant of Ikeja Police College, who died in the United States of America last week, would have risen if the deluge of tears from friends and well wishers could raise the dead. The oration came in waves and the tears in torrents as he was buried few day ago‎.

According to those in the know, Sobulo, who was gravely ill, had requested that he be buried in the US if he died there. And family members said they would respect his wish rather than return his remains to Nigeria for burial. He was said to be undergoing treatment for tumours of the colon before his death.

He was said to have previously undergone some surgeries in Nigeria and had recovered from the illness before it relapsed and he was flown to America where he died. The late Sobulo is survived by his pregnant young wife, Ameenat.

  • Friends forever

    Friends forever

It was a gathering of the high and the mighty. They came from all walks of life to honour the former Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu and Mr & Mrs. Ayodeji Fetuga at the wedding of their son, Adedeji Adedapo and daughter,    Adedolapo at  All Souls Anglican Church in Lekki and the Dorcester Events Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos. OLATUNDE ODEBIYI reports.

It was obviously her happiest day. She was all smiles, looking elegant in her flowing gown as she alighted from a dark grey Toyota High Lander that brought her to the All Souls Anglican Church in Lekki, Lagos, where her wedding took place last Friday.

Odunayo Adedolapo Fetuga tied the nuptial knot with the son of the former Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Prof Modupe Adelabu, Adedapo Adedeji.

Odunayo’s father, Mr Ayodeji Fetuga, held his daughter hand in hand as they moved to the altar, trailed by her bride’s maids, siblings, friends and some family members. She was handed over to Adedapo, who, clad in a blue suit, a white shirt and a tie.

In his sermon, the Vicar of the church, Ven Oludare Oloki told Odunayo to support and submit to Adedapo and that Adedapo should love Odunayo in exchange for the submission.

According to him, in every marriage, the woman is to strengthen the man for them to be compatible, complement each other and not to compete.

He urged the couple to open up to each other, saying it would remove suspicion and build trust.

At the Dorchester Event Centre on Water Corporation Drive, Off Ligali Ayorinde, Victoria Island, where the reception took place, the hall decor was a beauty to behold. The all-white decoration with lights, chairs and tables covered in gold and flower vases on the tables, added colour to the beauty of the day.

Guests, decked on classic outfits of either traditional or English attires, filled the expansive hall to the brim. The ushers, in gold tops on wrappers, gave a good account of themselves, directing special guests to the seats reserved for them. The servers were also up to the task as they ensured that every guest had a lot to eat and drink. Popular comedian Idowu Nuel (a.k.a. Koffi) ensured the guests had no dull moment throughout the programme as he spiced the gathering with rib-cracking jokes at intervals.

After the entry of the couple and their parents, the chairman on the occasion, Chief Kayode Ojutiku, led the gathering to observe a minute’s silent in honour of the groom’s late father, Prince Micheal Adedeji Adelabu.

He later admonished the couple to support each other and their families, ensure that they remain together always and never forget each others’ birthday.

koffi led the couple to cut the five step white cake, they fed each other and had their bridal dance. To the admiration of the quests, the father of the bride also danced with his daughter and the groom’s mother danced with her son.

Odunayo threw her bouquet to the single ladies and they had the toast.

The groom said he felt great marrying the only one he loves, describing her as amazing, gorgeous and beautiful.

“I met her about three years ago, through a friend who is her cousin; the first day I met her, I believed she was the one for me and that was very rare of me because I am choosy. I am glad I met her because she is the perfect match for me,” he said.

The bride said she was exited, overwhelmed and elated, and thanked God for the success of the day.

Recalling her first encounter with Adedapo, Odunayo said: “I was not interested when my my cousin first introduced me to him. But, when I got to meet him, I fell in love almost immediately. I had to calm down because I needed to know if he really liked me and not just the pretty face. I was convinced that he really does.”

Describing Adedapo as caring, she said he was already treating her like a wife even before she got the ring. She said he also treats her as his sister.

“He makes me happy”, Odunayo said.

Senator Oluremi Tinubu advised the couple to love each other, saying with love, they will be able to forgive, conquer all fears and heal a lot of things. She wished them a blissful and fruitful marriage for a life time.

Mrs Adelabu told her son to be like his father. She told the couple to live together and be friends to each other. She prayed God to be in their family.

The bride’s mother, Mrs Abike Fetuga, prayed that Gods presence will be in the marriage and go before them. She also prayed that the peace and power of God will prevail in the marriage.

“It’s an ever-lasting journey that they have started. The relationship will not scatter. It will be fruitful. It will be well with them and they will rejoice for the rest of their lives.”

Former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba told the couple to be committed to prayers.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote congratulated the couple and he told them to live as brother and sister and should not allow a third party to interfere in their affairs.

Former Ekiti State Governor Niyi Adebayo told the couple to be patient with themselves and do everything to keep each other happy.

Prof Wale Omole told the couple to ensure effective communication among themselves.

Kemi Nelson told them to study, understand and tolerate each other.
