    FRSC laments persistent road accidents in Oyo

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has lamented persistent road accidents in Oyo State.

    It blamed the accidents on failure of drivers to follow traffic laws, adding that there should be an attitudinal change and total compliance with rules guiding road usage.

    Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan following an accident that claimed six with many injured at Oke-Elesin, Amuloko in Ona-ara local government area, Oyo FRSC Sector Commander, Corps Commander Rosemary Alo condoled with families of the deceased, wishing injured ones speedy recovery.

    According to the Oyo FRSC boss, road crashes are caused by humans, urging drivers to embrace safety on highways particularly during these Ember period.

    She said one of the focus of FRSC was to reduce road accidents on roads across the nation particularly in the state.

    She however said her men has mapped out strategies for rescue operations to rescue accident victims in the state particularly during this Ember months.

    The price of petrol in Nigeria has continued to soar, with pump prices being adjusted twice in the past two months.

    As a result, Nigerians are increasingly seeking sustainable alternatives to petrol-powered vehicles, with CNG-powered vehicles being one option under consideration.

    Recently, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) suggested bicycles as an alternative mode of transportation.

    At the United Nations World Bicycle Day Flag off Ceremony, FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, encouraged Nigerians to adopt cycling not only for transportation but also for healthier living.

    He highlighted the benefits of cycling in promoting serenity, orderliness, and peace in urban areas.

    Here are Eight countries in the world where cycling is a prominent means of transportation:

    1. Netherlands – Known for its extensive cycling infrastructure and bike-friendly cities.

    The Netherlands has a large network of cycle paths that are well-marked, smooth, and separate from motorized traffic. There are also protected intersections, ample bicycle parking, and cycle tracks.

    2. Denmark – Copenhagen is famous for its high cycling rates and bike lanes. Denmark has dedicated bike lanes, bridges, and supercycle highways. The country has a network of 11 national cycle routes and many regional routes that extend over 12,000 kilometres (7,500 miles).

    3. Germany – Many cities have well-developed cycling networks, with more than half of the German population cycling regularly or semi-regularly. According to Statista, around 54% of Germans ride a bike at least once a month, including e-bikes.

    4. China – Bicycles are widely used, especially in urban areas, though electric bikes are increasingly popular. In 2022, bicycles were the preferred mode of commuting for 44.3% of Chinese people, surpassing cars, buses, taxis, and metros.

    5. Japan – Bicycles are a common mode of transport in cities and towns. Cycling is a prominent part of Japanese culture and lifestyle, especially in rural and suburban areas. Most Japanese people have cycled since childhood, as nearly every child and young adult rides their bike to school.

    6. Sweden – Cities like Malmö have invested in bike-friendly infrastructure. Sweden has a well-developed network of cycle paths in cities and towns and well-marked routes across the country.

    7. Finland – Helsinki promotes cycling with various initiatives and bike-sharing programs. Sweden has a well-developed network of cycle paths in cities and towns and well-marked routes across the country.

    8. Belgium – Cycling is popular, particularly in cities like Ghent and Bruges. Cycling is a prominent part of Belgian culture and is considered a national sport.

    FRSC retraining drivers to extend pilot-like safety courtesies to passengers – Adamawa commander

    A growing focus of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) is to ensure vehicle drivers extend to their passengers the sort of courtesy that air passengers get from pilots.

    The commander of the FRSC in Adamawa State, Yahaya Adikwu, who indicated this in Yola, said the FRSC wants drivers who will tell passengers about the recommended safety speed limits they would observe and go ahead to faithfully observe them.

    He spoke during a courtesy call on the Correspondents Chapel of the Adamawa Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists that such ernest communication fosters a sense of responsibility and trust between drivers and passengers.

    Adikwu, who spoke in the spirit of this year’s Customer Service Week, stressed that if such honest courtesies as necessary communication between drivers and passengers can be attained, human errors which account for most accidents would be avoided.

    The Nation reports that globally, about 1.3 million people die from road crashes every year, just as the death figure for Nigeria last year was put at 5,081.  

    Adiku said he is pained by such avoidable deaths, stressing that new strategies are needed to curtail the crisis.

    Adikwu, stressing the importance of value reorientation, promised that his command would focus on changing driving habits for the benefit of all.

    Responding to the visiting FRSC commander, the Correspondents Chapel Chairman, Padio Phineas, appreciated Adikwu, who was a practising journalist before he joined the FRSC.

    Phineas said Adikwu, by his visit to the Chapel, became  the first service commander to do so.

    Bill to allow road safety officers bear arms scales second reading

    A bill for an Act to amend the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act, 2007 to make offers bear arms has scaled second reading in the House of Representatives.

    The bill which was sponsored by Rep. Abiodun Adesida (APC-Ondo) and Rep. Olaide  Muhammed (APC-Oyo) at plenary on Thursday.

    The bill seeks to establish  Road safety Special Armed Squad and make corps on the rank of Deputy Corp Marshal enjoy benefits attached to that grade including retirement grade.

    The bill also seeks to empower the commission with the responsibility for road traffic administration and safety management.

    The bill, when passed into law will empower the commission supervise of users of public roads, regulate traffic, clear obstruction on any part of the public roads with the aim of preventing and minimising road traffic crashes on public roads.

    The bill seeks to mandate the commission to educate drivers, motorist and other members of the public on the proper use of public roads and other related matters.

    In his ruling, the Speaker of the house, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas referred the bill to the committee on FRSC for further legislative actions.

    In a related development, the house tasked  FRSC to embrace technology-assisted enforcement, which includes Automatic Vehicle Local (AVL) systems, Automated Traffic Enforcement (ATE) systems, advanced analytics and data platforms among other potential options to manage traffic.

    The call was sequel to the adoption of a motion by Rep. Garba Muhammad (. ) at Thursday’s plenary.

    Moving the motion, Mohammed said that FRSC officers patrol the highways, apprehend traffic offenders, issue traffic regulations to deter dangerous driving and regulate the issuance of driver’s licenses to ensure only qualified individuals operate vehicles on the roads;

    He said that FRSC enforcement methods of physical checkpoints pose potential risks to commuters, the location of checkpoints on steep inclines or declines can be dangerous.

    According to him, the risks are especially for motorcycles and tricycles, application of sudden brake or swerve maneuvers to avoid checkpoints can lead to accidents.

    The lawmaker explained that checkpoints create bottlenecks, especially during peak hours, leading to traffic jams and delays coupled with alleged reports FRSC officials engaging in corrupt practices at checkpoints soliciting bribes from motorists, or impounding vehicles for minor offenses.

    “Worried that the FRSC’ practice of using motorcycles and vehicles to chase commuters for traffic offenses raises concerns as the chase was always on high speed, posing a risk to bystanders, and resulting in loss of control leading to injuries and minor accidents.

    “Also worried that while the FRSC goal of enforcing traffic laws is understandable, it is crucial to prioritise the safety of everyone on the road, but chasing commuters should be a last resort, employed only in situations where it is absolutely necessary and can be done safely,” he said.

    The house urged the Federal Road Safety Commission to evaluate the effectiveness of enforcement strategies in reducing traffic violations and improving safety.

    In his ruling, the speaker mandated the House Committee on FRSC to ensure compliance.

    New FRSC boss vows to tackle  corruption among personnel 

    The new Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Katsina Sector Command, CC Aliyu Maaji has warned staff of the command against extorting motorists.

    Maagaji, who gave the warning when he assumed office in Katsina on Tuesday, said that bribery would not be tolerated and any staff found guilty would be shown the way out.

    He further urged the personnel to key into the Corp Marshal policy thrust by putting in their best to create good public image for the corp.

    He stated that plans were underway to introduce a monthly stakeholders’ forum to create more awareness and collaborative efforts in the state.

    The sector commander thanked the state government and members of the press who were on ground to receive him.

    He assured to work together with each of the staff towards ensuring road safety and safe driving across the state, while calling on them to redouble their commitment to duty.

    Maaji further appealed to road users and other stakeholders to continue to give the commission more support to enable it discharge its duties diligently to reduce road accidents and traffic.

    FRSC recovers N8.6m at Kaduna crash scene

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna State Sector Command’s operatives have recovered N8.6million at the scene of an accident.

    The Sector Commander, Mr Kabir Nadabo, confirmed the accident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Kaduna.

    Nadabo said the crash occurred  at Area G Samaru, on the Zaria-Funtua Road  at 1900hourrs, which left two persons injured.

    He said a Ford Pick up belonging to the Nigerian Army, with registration number FST 134FX and a Toyota Corolla were involved in the accident.

    Nadabo said the van was moving towards Funtua when the Corolla, with registration number KTN 316 HK, travelling to Zaria, lost control and crashed onto the Ford.

    He said the initial investigation indicated that the cause of the crash was speeding and loss of control.

    Nadabo said: “A rescue team from Zebra 55 Shika led by the Zebra Head  conducted the rescue.”

    He said further investigation showed that three people were involved in the crash, two sustained injuries,  while one person was injury-free.

    “The injured were conveyed to the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika for further treatment.

    ”In addition to the rescue, N 8.6 million was recovered at the scene.

    “The amount belongs to the owner of the red Toyota Corolla, while arrangements are being made for him to fully recover before handing over the money to him, “he said.

    Nadabo said the corps in Kaduna would continue to engage the relevant and critical stakeholders in advocating and creating more awareness on safety.

    He added that the corps would not relent in its call for road users and  motorists alike to work with FRSC in addressing the menace of road traffic crashes in the state.

    The commander appealed to motorists to imbibe the culture of safe driving, particularly through townships and the highways.

     He  appreciated the Kaduna State Government for its support to FRSC.

    Nadabo also commended the media for aligning with FRSC’s values in propagating safety.

    A rescue team of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has rescued three accident victims and recovered N8,620,000 at the scene in Kaduna State.

    The accident occurred around 7pm on Monday, September 30, at Area G Samaru, along Zaria-Funtua road.

    Spokesman of the FRSC, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, who announced this in a statement on Tuesday, October 1, said the accident involved two vehicles.

    According to Ogungbemide, three people were involved in the accident but only two people were injured.

    He said: “ From the report of the rescue operations conducted, a Ford pick up belonging to Nigerian Army with registration number FST 134FX was moving towards Funtua when a Toyota Corolla, red in colour with registration number KTN 316 HK enroute Zaria whose driver was confirmed to be speeding against legal speed limit on that route, lost control and crashed onto the Ford Pick.

    “Initial investigation which revealed that the cause of the crash is speed violation also shows that three people were involved in the Crash. Two of the victims sustained various degrees of injury,  while the remaining victim was rescued without injury.

    “The injured were rescued to Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital, Shika for immediate medical attention.”

    The spokesman said the FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, had applauded the  rescue team for a job well done.

    He said the Coprs Marshal had also identified speed as as one of the major causes of fatalities and injuries in the country, and  urged the motorists to desist from violating prescribed speed limit on all roads.

    “He further implored the operatives to always sustain the integrity that the Corps is known for and the legacy of its founding fathers,” Ogungbemide said.

    The Corp Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has directed Commanding Officers to ensure full deployment of personnel and logistics, prompt removal of obstructions, and effective traffic management that will forestall all incidences of road accidents during Independence Day.

    He urged motorists to apply “all cautionary measures” to achieve an accident-free celebration. 

    The FRSC boss, in a statement by the Corps’ spokesman, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Monday, said the deployment of operational facilities across traffic-prone areas and other places would ensure a hitch-free movement of persons and goods.

    According to him, the FRSC was aware of how much the country cherishes its independence going by the series of festivities that form part of the celebration and warmly aligns in totality with the entire citizens in this historic moment.

    He, however, urged Nigerians to embrace safety ideals, sustain positive driving behaviour, avoid negative ones, and adhere to all traffic rules and regulations.

    While wishing Nigerians a peaceful and safe celebration, the Corps Marshal urged the public to utilize the FRSC toll-free number 122 and the FRSC Mobile App to put calls through in the event of any crash, obstruction, or emergency for prompt response.

    The federal government has promoted 48 senior officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to their next ranks.

    The approval was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Gorge Akume, who is the supervising authority of the FRSC.

    Those affected are 21 Corps Commanders (CC) who are promoted to the rank of Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM), 11 Deputy Corps Commanders to Corps Commanders, and 17 Assistant Corps Commander to Deputy Corps Commander.

    A statement by the spokesman of the FRSC, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Saturday, said three Assistant Corps Marshals have been directed to proceed on immediate retirement. Those affected by this development are Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) D. I. Okuobeya, ACM A. S. Ochi and ACM Adekanye.

    According to the statement, the officers promoted to the rank of Assistant Corps Marshals (ACM) are: the Corps Secretary, ACM L. D. Shehu, Corps Legal Adviser, ACM K. D. Gonji, Corps Public Education Officer, ACM Olusegun Ogungbemide, Corps Intelligence Officer, ACM G. Ntukidem, the Corps Provost, ACM A. T. Hassan, the Corps Budget Officer, ACM M. R. Sabiya, and the Corps Transport Standardisation Office, ACM K. A. Ibrahim.

    Others, according to the statement, are: Sector Commander Bayelsa, ACM C. M. Onukwubiri, ACM T. A. Mohammed, ACM in charge of Command Administration and Strategy, ACM S. U.     The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered operatives of the corps to collaborate with other security agencies to enforce compliance on restrictions of vehicular movement during the governorship election

    The Corps Marshal also mandated the personnel to “clear obstructions from the roads, carry out rescue operations in case of emergencies, and maintain orderliness in polling booths.”

    The spokesman of the FRSC, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, announced this in a statement on Friday.

    He said: In the same vein, adequate mobilisation has also been made for operational tools including deployment of vehicles, tow trucks, as well as ambulances to strengthen enforcement of restrictions during the entire process of the election.

    “The Corps Marshal warned the personnel deployed to play an active role in the democratic exercise.

    “While emphasising on the need to exhibit the highest sense of professionalism, the Corps Marshal also admonished them to avoid any act that could lead to abuse of the rights of electorates.”
