FRSC arrests 100 traffic violators in FCT

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT Command has arrested no fewer than 100 traffic offenders in the last one week during the ongoing “Operation Green Light Enforcement” in the city centre.

FCT Sector Commander, Muta’a Chorrie, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.

Chorrie lamented that most motorists, especially commercial drivers, have made it a habit to disregard traffic lights.

He warned that the Corps would continue to sanction traffic offenders, regardless of their status, to ensure sanity on the roads.

He also addressed the issue of indiscriminate parking by commercial drivers, saying that the Corps had increased the mobility of patrol personnel to check the excesses of road users.

“The FCT Command has been engaging with Transport Union Leaders in regular meetings to address the menace in the six area councils of the territory.

“We arrested 100 traffic offenders within seven days in FCT. We will not relent until sanity is restored on our highways,” he said.

Chorrie however, appealed to motorists to avoid overloading, as the Corps would not tolerate those who dent the country’s image.

The FRSC boss also advised Nigerians to avoid boarding overloaded vehicles, as they were difficult to maneuver during emergencies.

“With the rainy season setting in, we urge road users to drive within approved speed limits and park at convenient places when the rain is heavy,”he said.

We did not abolish patrol points in Southeast, says FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said that it hasn’t abolished patrol points in the southeast.

It said contrary to reports in some sections of the media, its personnel will engage in patrols to ensure total compliance to road traffic laws.

The spokesperson of FRSC, Corps Commander Olusegun Ogungbemide, said this in a statement on Sunday, June 23.

Ogungbemide said the Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone 9 Headquarters Enugu, Assistant Corps Marshal Uche Chukwurah, who visited the Abia State Sector Command, Umuahia, was misquoted to have said the patrol points were abolished.

The statement said: “Even though the statement by the Zonal Commanding Officer was meant to reaffirm the stand of the National Headquarters of the FRSC on the new operational strategy that will de-emphasize static patrol which comes in the form of roadblock, it was unfortunately misconstrued to mean abolition of patrol points in the zonal command based on security threats.

“Nothing can be further from the truth as the statement was not only misleading but capable of giving wrong information to unsuspecting members of the public on the intention of the FRSC Management on the ongoing operational rejigging not targeted at the Southeastern states of the country but the nation at large.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the policy of rejigging the operational strategy of the Corps as conceived by the present Management under Corps Marshal Shehu is aimed at improving the capacity of the personnel to respond promptly to distress calls through provision of functional operational vehicles, ambulances and motorbikes; retraining of personnel for efficient rescue services and increasing the mileage coverage of daily patrol activities for increased presence on parts of the road network.

“Consequently, any meaning read to the original statement attributed to the Zonal Commanding Officer of Zone 9 Headquarters to create the impression that the FRSC is abolishing or intends to abolish patrol in the Southeast is distorted, misleading and should be disregarded.

“What the FRSC as the lead agency in road traffic management and safety administration in Nigeria and one of the security agencies charged with the responsibility of creating safer road environment is doing is to work harder to improve on its quality service delivery and support to other security agencies through credible processing of database on drivers and vehicles which has nothing to do with the abolition of patrol points in the Southeast as alleged.”c

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has appealed to Nigerians to join hands in ensuring safety on roads so as to curb road crashes, especially during this Sallah season.

She said several measures has been put in place by the Command to ensure safety on roads, before, during and after the celebration in the state.

According to her, the Command has deployed its men roads, deployed ambulances incase any accident to convey victims to hospital, and also sensitised residents of the state through media on usage of road to avoid accident.

She said: “We’ve had a meeting with the PMS and NURTW on safety on roads, we enlightened the public on obeying the traffic light, also, there is a task force working to avoid selling of alcohol and others dangerous drugs in our parks and garages.”

She lamented that some road users in the state, particularly overloaded buses and trailers loaded with animals, goods and persangers don’t followed road safety law which many times leads to cratches on roads.

“Overloading of buses and trailers has became a menance, after checking data of cratches that has occured in the state from January till now, we see that most of it was caused by this menance.

“Drivers should stop overloading buses, puting jerican loaded with fuel inside the buses and trailers because if accident happened, the fuel will burst into flame and roasted the passengers which will make it difficult for us to rescue them.”

Enugu road crashes caused by mechanically deficient vehicles, says FRSC

…as state gets computerised vehicle inspection centre

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has attributed mechanically deficient vehicles as major causes of road accidents on the Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the state.

This is just as the state government expressed its determination to reduce the high level of road mishaps using computerized vehicle inspection centres in the state.

The Ugwu-Onyeama axis of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway has been a major dark spot where road crashes are regularly recorded with their attendant human casualties.

Speaking during the commissioning of a new vehicle inspection centre along Abakiliki Road, Enugu, the Enugu State sector commander of the FRSC, Sokunbi Adeyemi, said: “In Enugu State, Ugwu-Onyeama is a major axis for road crashes. It is an accident-prone area because the majority of the vehicles playing on that road are mechanically deficient.”

He, however, expressed happiness that the introduction of the vehicle inspection centre by the state government would help in the prevention of road crashes caused by mechanically deficient vehicles on roads.

“I want to encourage everyone, individuals, fleet operators, transport owners, and transport unions to make use of this facility to reduce mechanically deficient vehicles on the roads, then, we will reduce road crashes on our roads and make the roads safe”, he said.

Commissioning the facility, the state commissioner for Transport, Dr Obi Ozor, explained that the centre which is one of the four such centres that would be located in different locations of the state, would address the issues around the roadworthiness state of such vehicles.

He added that the state-of-the-art facility represents a significant leap forward in the state government’s commitment to ensuring road safety, environmental protection, and the overall well-being of the citizens.

“The establishment of this computerized vehicle Inspection centre is a testament to our dedication to modernizing our infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for all our residents.

“This center is equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to provide comprehensive and accurate inspections of vehicles centre.

“By leveraging advanced diagnostic tools and automated processes, we can ensure that every vehicle on our roads meets the highest standards of safety and environmental compliance.

“This will not only reduce the incidence of road accidents caused by faulty vehicles but also significantly cut down on harmful emissions, contributing to a healthier environment.

“For our regulatory bodies, it provides reliable data and insights that are crucial for policy-making and enforcement. And for our community at large, it heralds a safer, cleaner, and more efficient transportation system.

On his part, the Group Managing Director of Temple Group, Segun Obayando said that the Enugu centre was one of 28 centres across the federation, adding that the facility can inspect 210 vehicles daily.

“What we are doing today is not new but only that we left what is right and do what is wrong. This vehicle inspection started during the colonial era and it’s a normal thing to do everywhere in the world we felt Enugu State would not be left out.

“We have opened 27 centres in 27 states and now we are in Enugu, making it 28. So, as long as vehicles are on the road, our own is to fulfill what the law says by inspecting the vehicle to certify its roadworthiness.

“The law required that you must take your vehicle to the Vehicle Inspection Officer to certify your vehicle once a year for private and twice a year for commercial. Vehicle inspection is done across the world but because Nigeria doesn’t have the facility, they resort to manual.

“What we did today was to give way to modernisation, digitalisation and automation to take all these jobs and be sure that biases will reduce,” he said.
