    Yuletide: FRSC deploys 950 personnel in Kwara

     The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 950 personnel for Christmas and New Year special patrol operations in Kwara.

    This is contained in a statement issued by the Kwara FRSC Public Education Officer, Basambo Busari, on Friday in Ilorin.

    According to Busari, 350 special marshals, 120 first respondents, 40 patrol vehicles, two power bikes, four ambulances, four private tow trucks and a 70 ton tow-truck are deployed for the operations during the period.

    “The special operations are necessitated by the attendant increase in movement of vehicles across road corridors in the state during the festivities, and the need to address road traffic encumbrances associated with such increase,” he said.

    He said that the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Stephen Dawulung, has also deployed personnel for traffic control at strategic locations within Ilorin township and major cities in the state.

    The sector commander admonished motorists to obey traffic rules and regulations by avoiding speeding, overloading, obstruction, use of phone while driving and passenger manifest violation while driving.

    Dawulung also warned motorists to desist from operating vehicles of mechanical deficiency, rickety vehicles and driving with worn-out tyres, among others.

    He emphasised the need for drivers to avoid night journeys and take adequate rest of 30 minutes after every 4-hour drive as safety of life should be prioritised over pecuniary gains.

    The FRSC Kwara Command will further organise public enlightenment campaigns, mega rally in all interstate motor parks, early morning cry, advocacy at places of worship and markets to sensitise the motoring public, the official said.

    According to him, the command will also carry out special traffic control operations to ease the road congestion in Ilorin metropolis with three other traffic control camps established at Bode Saadu, Jebba and Olooru to ease traffic within the respective axis.

    ”The heavy tow truck, ambulances and standby rescue teams will be stationed along major highways within the state for immediate clearance of obstructions and rescue operations when the need arises.

    ”The operation is in line with the Goal 1 of FRSC 2023 Corporate Strategic Goals, which stipulates five per cent reduction in road crash fatalities and injuries.”

    Besides, Dawulung advised motorists to drive with caution and wished  Kwara residents Happy Christmas and New Year celebrations.

    SEMA seek partnership with FRSC on disaster management ahead of Yuletide

    The Executive Secretary of State Management Agency (SEMA) Sir James Aonodoakaa Iorpuu has hinted of plans to partner with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to prevent road disasters during the Christmas season.

    Iorpuu spoke while on an advocacy visit to the Benue State Sector Commander Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Steve Ayodele in Makurdi, Benue state capital.

    Justifying the need for the partnership, Iorpuu said, “The primary role of SEMA is to educate and inform the public on disaster prevention and control, as such this visit was to seek collaboration with FRSC.

    “I’m here to see how we can collaborate between your office (FRSC) and Benue Emergency Management Agency, in promoting road safety awareness during this Christmas season.”

    The SEMA boss added that “our aim is to engage you in meaningful discussion on effective strategies for sensitising the public, particularly motorists, on adhering to traffic rules, and promoting safety on the roads.”

    Responding, the Benue state Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps, Steve Ayodele, who was with his management team, assured the SEMA boss of collaboration during the yuletide saying there will be a standby 24 hours ambulance service provided by the command, including a standby rescue team.

    FRSC confirms 18 dead, 27 injured in Kaduna-Abuja expressway crash

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Kaduna Sector Command, said no fewer than 18 persons died and 27 sustained injuries in a road crash on Kaduna-Abuja expressway.

    The Sector Commander, Mr. Kabir Nadabo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the fatal road crash occurred at Audu Jhangon village along the expressway yesterday.

    He said the crash occurred at 05:20hrs, when a vehicle (DAF Trailer) with registration number KUJ 430XC, with overloaded goods, lost control and fell into a ditch. “Initial reports indicate the driver was at high speed, probably due to fatigue.

    “The combined rescue teams of RS1.114 Zhipe Unit Command and RS1.16B Dutse Outpost conducted the rescue operations.

    “The crash involved 65 people, where 27 were injured and 18 people died. “The injured have been taken to the nearest hospital for treatment, “he added.

    Nadabo said on receiving news of the crash, he visited the scene to have first-hand information as well as direct rescue team on the evacuation of the deceased to the morgue.

    “I also directed the tow truck to remove part of the accidented trailer blocking part of the road. The operation is ongoing, and the road is free for movement, “Nadabo said.

    Oyo govt approves two FRSC unit commands

    The Oyo state government has approved construction of two unit commands of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), as part of its efforts to ensure safety on the roads.

    The Commissioner for Public Works and Transport, Professor Dahud Sangodoyin, made the disclosure when he received the management team of FRSC and staff College Senior Course 2 who were on a study tour to the ministry at the weekend. 

    Professor Sangodoyin stated that when the construction of Ibadan Circular Road is completed, the FRSC unit commands will be constructed along the route, adding that the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde, signed FRSC station at Moniya six months ago, which is going to be like a school for the agency.

    He also disclosed that one of the reasons for embarking on diverse road constructions in the state is to reduce accidents on the roads as part of its responsibilities to protect the lives and properties of its citizens.

    Sangodoyin explained that it is not only the ‘ember’ months that contribute to accidents, but also bad roads, incompetent driving, and unworthy vehicles. 

    According to the Commissioner, the state government is planning an improved transportation system through the construction of roads that would link all the zones in the state, and reduce time spent traveling.

    He said: “If you move to Saki township road, which is 9.7 kilometers; it is a complete new road.

    “Between 2011 and 2021 when the road was commissioned, the Moniya-Iseyin road was terrible, and fatal accidents used to occur. But now, the statistics on that road have revealed that accidents have reduced due to the completed construction of the road and drivers are now spending little amount to maintain their vehicles.”

    Also speaking, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Tajudeen Raji, assured FRSC of a strong synergy, so as to ensure safety and reduce accidents on our roads.   

    Highlighting the different steps taken to curb accidents on the road by the agency, the Commandant, Federal Road Safety Corp Staff College, Assistant Corp Marshall Benjamin Nkwonta, explained that sensitization is ongoing in the media, motor parks, Registered Transportation Corporations, and religious houses.

    He said the corps is creating awareness on the ‘ember’ months, adding that the enlightenment has worked overtime as a preventive measure.

    The commandant urged the public to report any wrongdoing from officers while discharging their duties, stating that every officer has a name badge that could be mentioned when reporting.

    He said: “If any officer demands a bribe from you, know the time of collection; check the name and the location, all you need to do is call us. We have zero tolerance for corruption.”

    While imploring motorists to make sure they are psychologically and emotionally fit to drive, he implored them to utilize FRSC’s Computerized Vehicle Inspection Center to check the condition of their vehicles for free.

    Nine passengers burnt in Oyo auto crash – FRSC

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said nine passengers have sustained varying degrees of burns in an auto crash on Ogbomoso-Oyo Expressway.

    The Sector Commander in the state, Joshua Adekanye, confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan.

    He said the accident, which occurred on yesterday, involved a trailer and a truck at Sekona area along Ogbomoso-Oyo Expressway.

    Adekanye said that nine out of the total 13 people involved in the accident got burnt while four others escaped unhurt.

    “The accident happened around 3:30 am on Saturday. The truck vehicle caught fire while the trailer collided with it.

    “The actual cause of the truck catching fire could not be ascertained because it happened at night,” he said.

    He, however, said the likely cause of the trailer colliding with the truck might be speeding and wrongful overtaking.

    According to him, the burnt victims were being referred to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital for treatment, adding that the RS11.31 Ogbomoso and RS11.312 Oolo Commands conducted rescued operation.

    “Other agencies that carried out the rescue operation are the Fire Service and Odo-Oba Police Division,” he said.

    Adekanye called on motorists to shun night travelling, wrongful overtaking and dangerous driving to ensure safety on the roads.

    FRSC seeks collaboration with sister agencies

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Commander, Babatunde Farinloye, has called for collaboration and partnership with other security and traffic management agencies to ensure road safety in the state.

    He emphasised the multi-sectoral and participatory nature of road safety, underscoring the need for all agencies to work together to ensure the highest level of compliance and best practices.

    Farinloye spoke during one day workshop for security and traffic management agencies within Isolo, organised by the Isolo FRSC Unit with the theme: ‘Effective Collaboration: Key to effective attainment of goal.’

    He highlighted the pivotal role of the FRSC as the lead agency in road traffic management and administration in Nigeria.

    He called for a concerted effort among sister agencies, especially the state traffic agency, to uphold traffic discipline, standardise fleet operations and safeguard lives and property in the state.

    He urged all uniformed agencies, including the police, NDLEA and VIS, to collaborate closely with the FRSC to create a comprehensive and robust safety framework saying the workshop served as a significant step towards fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual support among security and traffic management agencies.

    “There should be no boundary as regards the issue of safety of life  and property on the road, we will work together, where your own is stopping while the next one will start. We will need the police to give us cover, we will need the NDLEA to also bolster our efforts in the issue of driving under the influence, we will need the VIS to ensure road worthiness of vehicles that will be plying the road, we will need every other uniform agencies to work with us. We will synergise and ensure a robust collaboration to ensure zero fatality during the Yuletide”, he said.

    The Chief Route Commander and Acting Unit commander, FRSC, Isolo Unit, Uko Uko stressed the sentiment of collaborative efforts, emphasising the need for agencies to work together to reduce road traffic crashes and alleviate traffic congestion in the region.

    He highlighted the benefits of information sharing and synergy among the agencies to achieve common goals and address challenges more effectively.

    According to him, the objective of the workshop was to collaborate and share data and information to reduce road traffic crashes and reduce gridlock within the Isolo community.

    Uko stressed the need for journey management skills, avoidance of night travel and abstaining from driving under the influence as the Yuletide season approaches.

    He also stressed the importance of seatbelt usage and the avoidance of substandard or expired tires to promote safe and secure travel for all road users.

    Sagamu Unit Command of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) has held a one-day workshop to sensitise drivers on road safety measures.

     This year’s workshop with the theme, “Speed thrills but kills,” was held at Awolowo Motor park in Sagamu, Ogun State.

     Chief Route Commander, Sule Okloho (Unit Commander Rs2.25) said it was in the FRSC tradition to sensitise the public, especially during the ‘ember months’ on road dangers.

    He advised drivers to maintain speed limits to avoid accidents, obtain a valid driver’s licence and avoid route violations.

    FRSC Deputy Corps Commander, Ayodeji Olusoga Oseni, said road accidents had been on steady increase because most drivers’ attention are often diverted from the road.

     He identified talking or texting on mobile phones as a cause of road accidents.

     Adegbayi further educated the drivers on overloading, traffic signs, safety, emergencies, road lanes, wrongful overtaking, driving on the walkway,  smoking while driving and accidents.

     NYSC corp members at the event thrilled the participants with stage play titled “speed thrills but kills” to also pass the message to the participants.

    Yuletide: Be conscious of your safety, avoid crashes – FRSC urges motorists

    The Unit Command of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun has appealed to motorists to be conscious of their safety and that of other road users to avoid crashes before, during and after the yuletide.

    The FRSC Unit Commander, Mr Akeem Ganiyu, made the appeal during a news briefing to commemorate the Road Traffic Crashes Remembrance Day on Monday in Ota, Ogun.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ganiyu spoke against the backdrop of this year’s ember months’ campaign, with the theme: Speed kills but Thrills: Avoid loading and drive responsively.”

    He said that the event was aimed at remembering all those who had been killed and those who had sustained serious injuries on the roads.

    According to him, the event, celebrated from Nov.15 to Nov 20, comprise Africa Road Safety Day and World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims.

    Ganiyu outlined some of the activities for this year’s celebration to include a visit to NUPENG mosque and toll-gate, Ota, on Nov. 17 to pass the FRSC Corps Marshal’s message to the congregation.

    He added that the FRSC personnel also visited on St. Shilloh on Nov.18, where they sympathised with the victims of road crashes at the accident and emergency ward, with donation of toiletries and other items.

    Ganiyu reiterated the corps’ commitment to ensuring safer motoring environment through collective efforts of stakeholders and partners toward reducing road crashes across the country.

    How to minimise road accidents, by FRSC Marshal

    Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Marshal Uko Uko has urged road users to stick to rules and regulations to prevent road crashes.

    He said road traffic crashes have created devastating effects, including the loss of bread winners, and the infliction of agony and trauma.

    Uko said accidents have done aot of damage to Gross Domestic Products (GDP) and also led to loss of manhours and revenue.

    He spoke at an event marking the Road Safety Day and African Day for Remembrance of Crash Victims held at the General Hospital, Isolo, Lagos.

    He said  abound across the strata of society, adding that there is need to provide succour for them and their families.

    Uko, Isolo Unit Commander and Chief Route Commander,  led Road Safety Officer’s Wives Association (ROSOWA), Special Marshals and Regular Marshals to to the hospital to commiserate victims.

    Gift items, including cash and toiletries, were donated to the hospital to the victims.

    Uko noted that the theme of this year’s commemoration was “Justice, while the slogan was “Remember Support Act”.

    He urged relevant authorities, governments and individuals to support proper road use, abide by prescribed speed limits and apply modern Road Safety practices to reduce crashes.

    The Chief Hospital Administrator, Isolo General Hospital, Mrs Lawal Opeyemi, who represented the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Oseni, extolled the initiative of visiting crash victims and assured the Command of the hospital’s continued collaboration at all times.

     ROSOWA President of Isolo Unit Command, Mrs Chibuzor Doris Uko, thanked the hospital staff for their passion for saving lives, urging them not to relent.

     She also thanked the Special Marshals, who despite their busy schedules, came out to partake in the program.

    Special Marshals Alex Ndupu ( Zonal and State Provost Lagos) and Ojabulu Ezikiel charged the hospital to continue to save lives.

    They promised to ensure that subsequent visits to the hospital will be more elaborate.

    Ford Foundation supports FRSC on emergency responsiveness, preparedness

    Ahead of the Yuletide season, the Ford Foundation’s Office of West Africa (OWA) is providing funding support to help the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) build the capacity of its paramedics and operational officials to provide prompt and efficient accident rescue operations, preparedness and responsiveness to the very high accident rate on Nigerian roads.

    In the first quarter of his year alone, 4,387 persons died while 14,108 others were injured in road traffic accidents.

    Speaking at the kick-off of a capacity building training programme in Abuja, the foundation’s Regional Director in West Africa, Dr. ChiChi Aniagolu, hoped that FRSC officers participating in the training would be equipped with enough skills to effectively carry out their duties.

    She expressed the hope that they would also be able to save more lives during accidents, especially as the nation approaches the festive season when road accidents increase.

    Aniagolu said: “I am personally delighted that we are able to support this initiative of the FRSC because, despite the harassment we citizens sometimes experience from the FRSC personnel on the road, I am so proud of the work of the FRSC.

    “We thank you for your service and commitments and the risk and sacrifice you have been making for the past three decades to prevent and eradicate traffic accidents, attend to accident victims and create a safe motoring environment in Nigeria.”

    Dignitaries at the event included the Director, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Simon T. Tyungu, who commended the Ford Foundation for its support and the FRSC for its commitment to enhancing the capacity of its staff.

    In addition to the training in Abuja, training will also take place in Kano, Ibadan, and Enugu for FRSC workers in those locations.
