FRSC moves to curtail rising cases of corruption among personnel

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will punish any personnel that is found guilty of corruption.

It also said that it would engage other security agencies to prosecute drivers who knockdown patrol operatives while conducting their legitimate duties.

The Corps Marshall, Dauda Ali Biu, said this on Wednesday, February 28, in a speech at the opening ceremony of the 2024 First Quarter Corps Marshal’s Strategy Session with Commanding Officers at the FRSC Headquarters, Abuja.

The strategic season themed: “Reordering operational strategies and tactics for improved service delivery” was aimed to review the corps activities in the first quarter of the year, and strategize on achieving its goals in the second quarter.

The Corps Marshall said: “The rising incidence of bribery among operatives is a stain on our collective integrity. Corruption has no place within our ranks, and we must take decisive action to root out this scourge from our organization.

“Let me be clear: any form of corruption will be met with swift and severe consequences.

“I am always moved and disturbed over the issues of knockdown of our patrol operatives while conducting their legitimate duties, this trend will be a thing of the past as we engage our various stakeholders and sister security agencies to stem the tides and bring those responsible of maiming and killing our operatives to face justice as a due recompense for their actions.

“I will not fold my arms and watch our operatives subjected to inhumane treatments while they judiciously carry out their duties.”

The Corps Marshall said while the corps recorded a significant reduction of 8.3 percent in road crashes, a 22 percent reduction in fatalities, and a 10.2 percent reduction in several injuries last year, they would not rest until it achieved its aims of 5 percent road traffic crashes.

According to Biu, analysis reveals that vehicles carrying animals, goods, and people, interstate buses, and mass transit systems remain significant contributors to road accidents and fatalities.

He said: “Addressing these specific categories of vehicles requires targeted interventions and a multifaceted approach.

“We must prioritize the enforcement of speed-related offences such as the installation of Speed-Limiting Devices, and implement homegrown initiatives to address the root causes of road accidents. Collaborating with the judiciary in our operational efforts and engaging with the stakeholders.

“The issue of non-adherence to traffic lights, particularly in the nation’s capital, is a cause for concern. Such blatant disregard for traffic regulations not only endangers lives but also undermines the credibility of our enforcement efforts. We must redouble our efforts to ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws and hold violators accountable for their actions.

“I must address the observed instances of indiscipline among some of our FRSC operatives. It is unacceptable for any member of our corps to engage in misconduct or display untoward behaviour that tarnishes the reputation of our organization.

“We must hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism working with globally acceptable ethics within the rule of law and integrity at all times.

“We must address the perception of overzealousness and incivility towards members of the general public. Our interactions with motorists and pedestrians should be characterized by professionalism and respect which should be seen around the purpose of humanity and empathy.

“Building trust and fostering positive relationships with the communities we serve is essential to our success.”

He commended the personnel of the FRSC for their dedication and hard work throughout the past year.
