  • FRSC tasks drivers on regular eye checks

    Mrs Pat Emeordi, Sector Commander, Plateau Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) has advised commercial drivers and other motorists to go for regular eye checks to in order to know the status of their sights.

    Emeordi gave the advice at a sensitisation rally organised for commercial drivers in Yandoya Motor Park, Jos on Friday.

    She attributed some road crashes to sight defects, hence, the need for drivers to constantly check their sights.

    “Records have shown that poor sight has greatly contributed to some of the accidents on our highways.

    “So, at every opportunity, we encourage drivers and indeed all motorists to go for regular eye checks so as to avoid any ugly occurrence.

    “Once your sight is sharp, the tendency of averting a crash while plying highway is high, ” she said.

    Emeordi stressed the need for drivers to obey traffic rules and regulations and desist from acts capable of causing carnage on the highway.

    Mr Stephen Akintola, Secretary, Plateau Chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), who spoke, thanked the command for the awareness and admonished drivers to heed to the FRSC’s advice.

    Highlights of the event include blood pressure and vision acuity tests at no cost to some motoring public.

  • Third Mainland bridge: FRSC, LASTMA will prevent gridlock’

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) yesterday assured motorists of free flow of traffic, despite the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge betweent today and Sunday.

    FRSC Lagos State Sector Commander Hyginus Omeje said 200 personnel had been deployed in the critical corridors to free traffic.

    Omeje said the corps was working with other law enforcement agencies to prevent gridlock on the road.

    “We have about 200 FRSC personnel joined with LASTMA, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the police. All efforts have been put in place to make sure there is free flow of traffic at various alternative routes for motorists.

    “The traffic officers have mapped out strategic and alternative routes where the personnel will be positioned to direct motorists accordingly and ensure their compliance with traffic rules,” he said.

    The FRSC chief said motorists coming from Lagos-Ibadan could use alternative routes to connect Ikorodu-Funso Williams, Western Avenue to Eko Bridge.

    “Other alternatives are from toll gate to Alapere-Ogudu, Iyana Oworo to Gbagada to Anthony then down to Ikorodu Road.

    “The rest is from Oshodi-Apapa Expressway to Orile to Eko Bridge or Ijora Olopa.”

    According to him, moving out of Lagos Island, motorists can make  their way to  Adeniji-Carter Bridge, Idumagbo down to Oyingbo, then to Herbert Macaulay to Ijora Olopa to Eko Bridge.

    LASTMA Chief Executive Officer Chris Olakpe said about 150 LASTMA officials had been drafted to ensure free movement of vehicles during the period.

    Olakpe said the operatives were stationed at various critical routes to monitor the movement of vehicles and give directions to them.

    “LASTMA is on top of the game and we are joining forces with other law enforcement agencies to handle the traffic, especially on Eko Bridge.

     

     

     

  • FRSC advises motorists on traffic diversion on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, on Thursday announced a temporary traffic diversion on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from Sunday, Aug. 26.

    Mr Clement Oladele, the FRSC Sector Commander in Ogun, said that the diversion was sequel to the ongoing construction of pedestrian bridge around Ibafo Bus Stop.

    Oladele said: “The diversion will enable the construction company building the pedestrian bridge, awarded by the Ogun Government, to erect beams of the pedestrian bridge.

    “Motorists have to bear with the inconveniences of the temporary diversion and cooperate with the FRSC patrol team to be assisted by sister traffic agencies.

    “They will be strategically deployed to control the diverted traffic on the highway.

    “Drivers are accordingly advised to observe lane discipline and drive cautiously, while obeying traffic rules and regulations around the diversion area and on all other road corridors.

  • 50% of road crashes due to drivers’ poor sight – FRSC

    Mr Anthony Oko, the Edo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ) says 50 per cent of the road crashes in the country are due to poor sights of drivers.

    Oko made the assertion during a sensitization programme and free eye test organised in Benin by the command, in collaboration with the Optometrists Association of Nigeria, Edo chapter.

    He said that because of this drivers needed to check their sights regularly, adding “to prevent accidents, we need to do eye tests,” he said.

    He said that the essence of the programme was to enhance accurate driving and prevent accidents on the road.

    He said road crashes were caused by human, mechanical and weather errors, stressing that the human element usually led to colossal loses.

    “Not everybody knows how to drive under the rain,” he added.

    In his remarks, Dr Onoriode Ateka, Secretary, Optometric Association of Nigeria, Edo chapter, said it had been observed that most road accidents were as a result of unclear vision of drivers.

    Ateka said there was the need to educate drivers on the importance of sight to guarantee safety on the road.

    He said that during the exercise, eye glasses would be recommended for those who needed them while those who would need treatment would be advised accordingly.

    He therefore advised drivers to endeavour to go for eye checks as least once in a year to update their vision.

    Some of the beneficiaries of programme, commended the organisers because it had enabled them to seek solution to their eye problems in order to avoid accidents on the road.

  • One dies in Ondo multiple road accidents

    Two separate road accidents reportedly occurred in Akoko area of Ondo state on Wednesday claiming one live.

    The first carnage involved a bus and commercial motorcycle rider (Okada)around 9pm,who sustained head injury.

    Eye witness said the victim was rushed to Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission(FRSC) Ikare –Akoko.

    The Medical Director,Dr Wale Oguntuase confirmed that a man was brought to hospital with serious head injury which was quickly referred to Federal Medical Centre(FMC) Owo .

    The Unit Commander, FRSC,Ikare Akoko, Jimoh Basiru confirmed that his men carried him to FMC, Owo where he was confirmed dead.

    The second accident involved an oil tanker which detoured while climbing the ‘deadly’ Okerigbo hill.

    It took FRSC officials prompt intervention to supervise the off loading of the product to another trailer,while using a towing vehicle to remove the tanker from the busy highway.

    Basiru warned motorists against night journey,saying it is too risky.

    A spokesman of the community, Alhaji Ibrahim kilani urged Ondo state government to level up Okerigbo hill, Akungba Akoko like that of Oke-Alabojuto,Ikare Akoko where the government was doing a good job to reduce the dreadful hiIl.

    Kilani also hailed the state government for the completion of flooded areas such as Jubilee,Victory College and Bishop’s Court-Ugbe Akoko road that are now motorable.

  • Two die in auto-crash on Sallah day

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Ogun has confirmed that two persons died on Tuesday when a commercial bus  somersaulted on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Clement Oladele, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Abeokuta on Wednesday that the accident occurred at about 5 pm at Lamona Park on the expressway.

    Oladele said the Volkswagen commercial bus marked LSR 971 XG had 28 passengers, including 16 females and 12 males as well as three children, on board.

    He said the accident was caused by a tyre burst which resulted in the vehicle somersaulting.

    “Two people died in the accident and their corpses have been deposited at Isara mortuary while the injured were taken to Isara Hospital, Ogere,’’ he said.

    He advised motorists to obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from FRSC patrol teams and other sister traffic agencies.

    Oladele also urged motorists driving into construction areas to obey the maximum speed limit of 50km per hour stipulated on road signs along the corridors and avoid overtaking.

  • Eid-el-Kabir: FRSC urges motorists to cooperate with personnel

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has called for cooperation of members of the public and motorists in obeying the directives of its personnel and other law enforcement agencies.

    The Corps Public Education Officer, FRSC, Mr Bisi Kazeem made the call in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

    Kazeem quoted FRSC Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi in his Sallah message as assuring members of the public that Corps’ commitment to ensuring safer road environments before, during and after any celebration that attracts increased human and vehicular traffic remains unwavering.

    Oyeyemi called on the motorists to drive with care and show patience to other road users as a reflection of the spirit of sacrifice which the season symbolises.

    He said that following the declaration of Tuesday and Wednesday as public holiday by the Federal Government to mark the 2018 Eid-el-kabir celebration, Oyeyemi called for patience and collective vigilance on the roads to make the celebration hitch-free.

    According to him, Eid-el-kabir is traditionally a feast of sacrifice, which provides opportunity for all Muslims to reflect on the sanctity of lives and mercies shown to mankind by God as evidenced by the substitution of a ram with the life of Ismail.

    He further noted that the lesson of the sacrifice demonstrated how God took the sanctity of lives and the need for people to take measures that could ensure human safety.

    “The magnanimity shown to prophet Abraham by way of God substituting a ram for the life of his son, Ismail as is being observed in the Eid-el-kabir celebration is a great lesson for mankind,” he stated.

    Oyeyemi, therefore, enjoined the people to avoid acts capable of exposing their lives and that of their neighbours to dangers during the celebration.

    He said, “adequate numbers of FRSC regular and special marshals as well as logistics have been mobilised for effective traffic management, rescue operations and support to road travellers across the country.

    “To achieve the desired results, the Corps Marshal directed patrol teams to focus more on specific offense like wrongful overtaking, use of phone while driving.

    “Also, traffic light violation, drunk driving, overloading and lane indiscipline as well as use of extra lights by articulated vehicles during the special operations”

    He appealed to members of the public not to hesitate to contact the FRSC Call Centre through the toll-free line:122 in the event of a road crash and other emergencies for prompt response.

    He said that all FRSC facilities would remain opened and functional during the celebration and beyond to attend to members of the public. (NAN)

  • FRSC cautions motorists on Lagos-Ibadan road over tanker accident

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has advised motorists travelling on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to be cautious, following an accident on the long bridge inward Lagos State.

    FRSC’s Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the accident occurred at 5:56 a.m on Sunday.

    He said: “The vehicular movement on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway inward Ibadan is currently diverted at OPIC to share the road with vehicles moving inward Lagos due to a crash involving a petrol tanker, which split its content on the road.

    “All emergency response agencies are on the ground. An empty tanker is also on the ground now for trans-loading of the product.”

    Omeje said the tanker with the petroleum product lost control and rammed into another vehicle, injuring three people.

    The sector commander said the vehicles involved were a white Mack tanker and a white Iveco truck with registration numbers LSR460XG and LND 818XN.

    He said the commission and other agencies were making efforts to remove obstructions from the road.

    Omeje urged motorists to exercise patience on the corridor.

    The Corps’ Public Education Officer, Mr Bisi Kazeem, also advised motorists to be cautious as another leaking tanker belonging to MRS Oil had been reported at a Mobil filling station on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway outward Lagos State.

    He said: “Another leaking tanker from MRS Oil has been reported by Mobil filling station on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (outward Lagos) as one of the nuzzles gave way and fuel is pouring out seriously.

    “Traffic has been diverted from toll gate to forestall a fire disaster.

    “Men of Ojota Unit Command are on the ground and Lagos Fire Service has been activated.”

  • Eid el-Kabir: FRSC deploys four breathalysers to curb drunk driving

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed four breathalysers to detect drunk driving along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway during the Eid el-Kabir holidays.

    The Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje,  told  the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday in Lagos that the breathalysers would help FRSC officials to detect drivers driving under the influence of alcohol.

    A total of 26 patrol vehicles with two motorbikes, radar guns and two ambulances, have also been deployed to ensure effective vehicular movement during the festival, Omeje said.

    He added:”we have deployed over 1,500 personnel, comprising of Regular and Special Marshals for traffic control activities along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, Lekki/Epe/Ijebu-Ode highway, the Lagos-Badagry expressway and the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway.

    “The special patrols will focus on wrongful overtaking, speeding, violation of the speed limiting device, overloading, violation of drivers’ licence and use of phone while driving.”

    The FRSC boss said that there are help and ambulance points at OPIC, on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway for prompt rescue.

    Omeje advised the motoring public to ensure proper vehicle checks before embarking on any trip, avoid driving with expired or worn out tyres, as well as night journeys.

     

  • Eid-El Kabir: FRSC to deploy 35,000 personnels

    … Corps to cover 45 corridors

    Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi has revealed that 35,000 personnels will be deployed during the eid celebration.

    The personnels to be deployed include 21,000 Regular Marshals and 14,000 Special Marshals respectively.

    Oyeyemi also stated that the personnels will effectively cover 45 Corridors during the Eid-El Kabir special Patrol which is expected to commence from 17 to 26 August, 2018.

    Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem made this known in a press statement.

    He stated, “As part of strategies put in place by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to trend down road traffic crashes, the Corps Marshal, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has directed the Corps’ Operatives (Regular and Special Marshals) to effectively cover 45 Corridors during the Eid-El Kabir special Patrol which is expected to commence from 17 to 26 August, 2018.

    “According to Bisi Kazeem, the Corps Public Education Officer, the Corps has also identified possible alternative routes to ease traffic flow around the major highways. The alternative routes are: Lokoja-Kabba-Ayere-Akunu-Ise-Junction-Ile-are-Ado Ekiti, Lokoja-Kabba-Ayere, 9th Mile-Udi-Oji River-Umunze, Bauchi-Alkaleri-Kaltungo, Kaduna-Kachia-Kwoi-Manchok, Keffi-Nasarawa-Toto-Abaji-Lokoja, Lekki-Epe-Ijebu Ode.

    “Kazeem also noted that, among the corridors to be covered include: Akwanga-Lafiya-Makurdi, Jos-Bauchi-Gombe, Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Birnin Kebbi corridor, Katsina-Kano-Wudil-Dutse-Azare-Potiskum corridor, Kaduna-Saminaka-Jos corridor, Abuja-Kaduna-Kano corridor, Okene-Ogori-Isua-Owo corridor, Makurdi-Otukpo-Obollo Afor-9th Mile corridor, Asaba-Abraka-Ughelli-Warri corridor, Ibadan-Ogere-Sagamu corridor, Sagamu-Mowe-Lagos corridor, etc.

    “Accordingly, Oyeyemi appreciated the motoring public for their cooperation in making our roads safe also stated in a special broadcast that operatives of the Corps have been directed to deploy all professional expertise to ensure that there is free flow of traffic, prompt clearing of obstructions and effective enforcement of traffic laws.

    “In the same vein, the Corps Marshal also directed that the Corps focuses on Effective Traffic Control, Wrongful Overtaking, Use of Phone while Driving, Drivers Licence Violation, Lane Discipline, Removal of Rickety vehicles on the road, Driving with Expired/ worn out tyre and without spare tyre etc.

    “To achieve this feat, Kazeem revealed that the Corps has deployed 35,000 personnel as follows, 21,000 Regular Marshals and 14,000 Special Marshals respectively. Also deployed are operational equipments which include 948 vehicles in the category of 656 patrol vehicles, 113 Ambulances, 156 Admin Vehicles, 23 Tow Trucks and also 204 Bikes for metropolitan bike patrol.

    “Other equipment deployed are; Radar Guns, Breathalyzers to put a check on drunk driving, operational logistics materials are also to be fully deployed for this exercise. More so, the Corps Marshal has equally directed that all Zebras must be active 24/7 for prompt rescue operations and be responsive to calls within the minimum FRSC response time to crashes reported.

    “In line with the foregoing, the patrol is to run in shifts as follows 0600hrs – 1400hrs, 1400HRS – 2000hrs, 2000hrs – 2200hrs, and Night Rescue teams to be on standby across the 12 Zonal Commands, 37 Sector Commands, 201 Unit Commands, 43 Outposts and 48 Emergency Ambulance Points (Zebras).

    “The Corps will go into the exercise with the friendly collaboration with Military Units en-route or resident, The Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Department of State Security, State owned/NGO’s Ambulance service providers, National Network on Emergency Rescue Services (NNERS) and Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA).

    “The Corps Marshal therefore advised all motorists to be patient on the road and ensure that they operate within the ambit of the law as the Corps is out to ensure compliance of established traffic laws. He therefore wished all travelers safe trip to their destinations as he felicitates with Muslim faithfuls.
