  • FRSC returns recovered N.5m from Ondo accident scene

    The Akoko Unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ondo State yesterday presented N500,000 recovered from the scene of an accident to the owners.

    The accident occurred recently at the dreadful Oke-Maria in Oka-Akoko, headquarters of Akoko Southwest Local Government Area, where some travellers died, property lost and many vehicles burnt with valuables.

    The amount was refunded to the owners and families of the deceased.

    The new Ondo Sector Commander of the FRSC, Commander Rotimi Adeleye, who was represented by Ikare Unit Commander, Jimoh Basiru, recalled that some market women coming from North and heading to Ibadan were involved in the accident.

    He said road safety is a collective responsibility of all drivers and passengers.

    According to him, when driver overspeed, it is the responsibility of the passengers to check him, since its impact would affect the driver of the vehicle involved in accident both will be affected..

    He said FRSC would not condone situation where accidents victim’s money and belongings will be tampered with by anybody.

    One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Funmi Okunola hailed the Agency.

    She urged others to emulate the gesture, noting that in spite of the harsh economy, FRSC officials could still be honest

  • FRSC confirms death of two corps members in Bayelsa

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday confirmed the death of two Corps members in an auto crash in Bayelsa.

    Mr Ikechukwu Igwe, State Sector Commissioner told our reporter in Yenagoa that two other corps members were injured in the incident.

    “Yes, the incident occurred on Monday at Swali Bridge in Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa; the Tricycle the Corps Members boarded was hit by a Tipper.

    “The two among them have died while the other injured two are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre Yenagoa.

    “Today, Tuesday, our personnel will be going to the hospital to check how they are responding to treatment,” Igwe said.

    Reacting to the incident, Mrs Loto Bolade-Omolayo, State Coordinator, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) described the incident as “unfortunate.”

    “Two of the corps members died as a result of the injuries sustained during the accident, while the other two are being treated by a team of competent consultants at the FMC.

    “The NYSC family is saddened by this sudden lose. We commiserate with their families on this unfortunate incident and pray for the repose of the souls of the dead and quick recovery of the injured corps members,” she stated.

  • Car kills three teachers opposite FRSC office in Ogun

    A driver had knocked down three female teachers in Ogun State with his car, killing the three in the process.

    One of them is said to be a teacher at a public school in Ajebo village.

    The accident which occurred at Alapako, opposite the office of the Ogunmakin unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway, also left one other woman with injuries.

    The Nation learnt that the teachers were standing by the roadside waiting for vehicle to convey them home after school hour when the Toyota Camry car ( 1996 model) marked EPE 140 BP and careering off its lane, knocked them down on Monday evening.

    According to the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, “the driver lost control and hit the women (school teachers) standing by the roadside” when “one of the front tyres of the speeding Camry car” suddenly pulled out.

    Akinbiyi stated that the injured was taken to the Victory hospital, Ogere, while the dead were deposited at the FOS Mortuary, Ipara, by the Operatives of the FRSC.

    The TRACE Spokesman added that the accident – vehicle had also been evacuated and taken to the Alapako Police Station, Ogun State.

    It was learnt that the driver was going in the direction of Ibadan, Oyo State, when the accident happened around 4:05pm on Monday.

  • Train tanker drivers to avoid accidents, FRSC charges NUPENG/PTD

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has charged the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), Petroleum Tanker Driver (PTD) section to engage its members in rigorous traffic trainings to avoid frequent accidents.

    Mr Bisi Kazeem, Head of Public Education, FRSC, told our reporters on Saturday that such training would minimize accidents involving tankers on the roads.

    “We are charging them to start engaging their members in rigorous traffic trainings so as to meet minimum safety standards concerning their vehicles.

    “It is very important to train and retrain them, to enable them follow the rules and regulations and to meet the road standard concerning their vehicles,” he said.

    The FRSC boss said there was an urgent need for government and stakeholders’ consultation, and that government needed to initiate policy or legislation to curb their excesses on the road.

    According to him, the new policy will regulate their operations and channel their movement to the rail network.

    Kazeem said the ongoing rail projects across the country would put an end to the menace of tanker accidents when completed.

    NUPENG/PTD National Chairman, Mr Salmon Oladiti, and the entire members of union have commiserated with the families of the victims of the Otedola Bridge Lagos-Ibadan expressway fire incident in Lagos on Thursday.

    Oladiti said it was an unfortunate occurrence because in the recent past, such calamities had been avoided by the members of the NUPENG/PTD.

    According to him, the union has been collaborating with the FRSC and other law enforcement agencies to observe the minimum safety standards on the highways.

    “All efforts will be put in place to ensure that this kind of disaster does not occur again on our roads.

    “We sincerely mourn the dead and share in the pains of the affected families, the Lagos State Government and the entire people of Nigeria,” the Chairman said.

    The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday visited the Lagos House in Alausa, Ikeja, to convey the condolences of the Federal Government to the State Government on the tragic tanker explosion.

    Osinbajo, who spoke shortly after a closed door meeting with the Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, said the Federal Government was deeply saddened by the incident.

    He said President Muhammadu Buhari had delegated him to visit the state to commiserate with the people of Lagos on the unfortunate incident.

  • FRSC seeks inclusion of road safety in curriculum

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has said teaching of basic road safety rudiments in schools will help children cultivate positive road habits.

    The Lagos and Ogun Zonal Commander, Assistant Corps Marshal John Meheux spoke at a stakeholders’ sensitisation forum on the implementation of road safety education curriculum in Lagos schools.

    According to him, it is better to impact the knowledge of proper road use in children because it will build their capacity and knowledge of doing the right thing when they become mature.

    He said the FRSC, in conjunction with the National Education Research and Development Council (NERDC), has begun implementing the Youth Safety Education (YSE) in primary and junior secondary schools to ensure that basic road safety drills are inculcated in the children through the teaching of Civic Education, English Language, Social Studies, Basic Science and Technology subjects.

    He urged schools to support FRSC by infusing safety education into their curricula.

    Lagos Sector Commander Hyginus Omeje urged the government and individuals to support the Corps by printing the subjects textbooks either free or at cheaper rates to distribute to schools, saying it will help reduce or eradicate crashes.

  • Sallah: 11 youths die in road accident in Katsina

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State has confirmed that 11 youths lost their lives in a road accident Sunday night while celebrating Sallah.

    Mr Godwin Ngueku, the Katsina Sector Commander of the corps, confirmed the incident to newsmen on Monday in Katsina.

    Ngueku said that the accident occurred when on a Peugeot Saloon Car carrying the youths had a head-on collision with a tipper truck along Katsina-Niger Republic highway.

    “The accident happened about 8:00 p.m. along the Katsina-Niger Republic international road. All the occupants of the Peugeot saloon car died at the scene of the accident.

    “The corpses were evacuated to the Katsina General Hospital mortuary at 9:00 p.m. on Sunday evening. The family members of the victims have started picking the corpses for burial,”Ngueku said.

    The sector commander appealed to parents to caution their children against reckless drinking and driving along the highways.

    It was noticed that there were several minor road accidents during the Sallah celebration in the state.

  • FRSC warns against reckless driving

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has advised motorists to drive with care on roads undergoing rehabilitation to avoid accidents and unnecessary loss of lives.

    Mr Clement Oladele, the FRSC Sector Commander, Ogun Command, gave the advice in an interview with the our reporters on Monday in Ota, Ogun.

    Oladele explained that ongoing rehabilitation of roads in different parts of the country had led to increased activities of construction workers and heavy duty trucks on those highways.

    He listed some of the roads undergoing rehabilitation in parts of Ogun to include: Lagos – Ibadan expressway, Sagamu -Ijebu Ode, Abeokuta – Ibadan and Abeokuta -Ota – Lagos, Fidiwo, Ajebo/Alapako roads.

    According to him, on account of these construction and rehabilitation works, motorists are advised to maintain speed limits and should be extra vigilant, particularly where there are diversions and vehicles have to face oncoming traffic.

    “Motorists are enjoined to drive cautiously and avoid overtaking to prevent possible collision with vehicles travelling in opposite directions.

    “We also implore motorists to obey the maximum speed limits stipulated on the roads signs along the corridor,” he said.

    The sector commander also advised motorists to obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from FRSC patrol teams and other traffic agencies.

  • FRSC returns over 65,000 Euros to accident victims

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun command, said it had returned over 65,000 Euros recovered from an accident scene to the victims.

    Mr Clement Oladele, the Sector Commander, disclosed this in a statement by the command’s Public Education Officer, Mrs Florence Okpe, in Abeokuta on Friday.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that eight persons died on Tuesday in an accident involving a bus and a truck on Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

    NAN gathered that the passengers in the bus came in from Spain and had chartered  the bus to take them to Benin City.

    Oladele explained that it was observed that some of the passengers were traveling with cash, including foreign currencies

    He stated that the FRSC rescue team also recovered 80 pounds, 238 Euro cents, N84,800, 32 traveling bags comprising 16 large traveling bags, seven extra large traveling bags and nine large “Ghana must Go” bags.

    “In line with the rule of the World Health Organisation , a hospital follow up of the victims of the fatal crash was done by the FRSC to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.

    “The crash occurred on Tuesday and it involved a white Toyota Hiace bus, belonging to a transport company – Iyare Motors, with registration number BEN 313 YZ and a Mack truck with registration number MUS 730 XN, ” he said.

    The FRSC boss noted that a team of FRSC accident investigators conducted a preliminary investigation of the crash and observed that the driver of the commercial bus went to Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos to pick some passengers (with their luggage).

    “While traveling along the Lagos /Ibadan expressway, before Sagamu
    Interchange, opposite Wictech Roofing and Pipes, due to excessive speed, in an attempt to overtake a truck ahead of it, the driver  lost control and rammed into the truck.

    “There was no evidence of a speed limiter installed in the commercial bus.

    “There was also no evidence of a passenger manifest to indicate the identities of the passengers and their Next of Kin to be contacted in case of an emergency.

    “The suspected causes of the crash are overloading (goods) and excessive speed leading to loss of control.

    “There was no evidence that the passengers in the bus activated their seat belts as at the time of the crash which compelled the passengers to shift and collide with the luggage inside the vehicle.

    “This collision was responsible for the injuries and deaths of some of the passengers, ” he said.

    The sector commander explained that FRSC had commenced legal actions against Iyare Motors for failing to provide a Passenger Manifest, failure to install a speed limiter and overloading the vehicle with excessive luggage.

    He admonished commercial fleet operators to affix speed limiters in their vehicles, provide passenger manifest for every trip and ensure their drivers complied with traffic regulations.(NAN)

  • FRSC deploys over 3500 personnel

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos and Ogun states zone has deployed over 3500 personnel, including regulars and Special Marshals, Medical team, 43 patrol vans, eight motorbikes, six ambulances and two tow trucks for Sallah celebration.

    Its Zonal Commander, John Meheux, an Assistant Corps Marshal, said the move was to reduce road crashes on the highways.

    He said the operation will focus on failure to install speed limit device, overloading, lane indiscipline, tyre violation, number plate violation, drive under influence of drugs or alcohol and use of phone while driving.

    He said the mobile court has been set up to trial any driver that violates the law in this regard.

    “The operation would monitor some crucial corridors within the two states, including Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Sagamu/Ijebu Ode-Ajebandele, Sango Ota-Itori-Abeokuta and Lekki-Ajah-Epe, Ogunmakin on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, Obatokun on Abeokuta/Ibadan highway and Sanford Ota on an old Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, among other,” he said.

  • Eight Edo indigenes coming from Spain die in accident

    Eight persons, five males and three females, have lost their lives in an accident on Tuesday morning when a Hummer bus conveying them rammed into a Mack truck.

    The accident occurred around 8:30am at the Wictech stretch of the Lagos – Ibadan expressway about two km away from Danco filling station.

    The victims – all believed to be Edo State indigenes, who just flew into the country from Spain this morning, had chartered the bus marked BEN 313 YX on the fleet of Iyare Motors and were going to Benin City for an engagement, when the accident happened.

    Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps(TRACE) were sighted evacuating victims, clearing obstructions and directing traffic.

    The Public Relations Officer of TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, who confirmed the accident to The Nation, said the driver of the speeding hummer bus ram into the rear of a truck marked MUS 730 XN in bids to overtake it.

    Akinbiyi said seven of the victims died at the accident scene while one other died later. Their remains have been deposited at the morgue of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu where two others rescued alive, were also receiving treatment.
