Abuja-Lokoja road gridlock: FRSC deploys reinforcements

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has ordered the deployment of additional officers and tow trucks along the Abuja–Lokoja Road to ease the ongoing traffic gridlock and ensure swift removal of obstructions.

In a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, on Sunday, the Corps Marshal confirmed that the congestion was largely due to increased vehicular movement, ongoing construction points, as well as undisciplined and impatient drivers driving against traffic.

He urged motorists traveling within this season to cooperate with personnel on duty for smooth traffic flow.

The Nation reports that motorists plying the Abuja-Lokoja highway have been left stranded for the past three days following severe gridlock around the Koton Karfe axis.

The highway is usually gridlocked a few days before Christmas due to heavy vehicular traffic and motorists’ disregard for traffic rules.

Reports indicate the congestion was caused by two fallen trucks on the highway, while others attribute it to the ongoing road rehabilitation pace.

The blockage led to a pile-up of trucks and vehicles between three and five miles, forcing some commuters to take extremely dusty off-road diversions.

The FRSC has been working to clear the blockage, deploying reinforcements to quickly remove the trucks and restore motorist movement.

Christmas: FRSC announced full deployment to ensure safer highways

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has directed Commanding Officers to ensure full deployment of personnel, patrol teams, and operational assets in line with the operational guidelines of Operation Zero Tolerance Exercise.

Operation Zero Exercise, which commenced on 15 December, 2025 and will run until 15 January, 2026, is a high impact, intelligence driven nationwide special operation aimed at delivering round-the-clock patrols, strategic traffic management, rapid emergency response and aggressive enforcement of traffic laws.

The Corps Marshal also ordered Commanding Officers to lead from the front, enforce strict discipline among operatives and guarantee optimal utilisation of patrol vehicles, ambulances, speed-limiting devices and other safety equipment.

In a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Marshal declared zero tolerance for mixed loading and distracted driving.

He warned that vehicles conveying passengers alongside goods or animals, as well as drivers engaging in phone use or other distractions while driving, will be decisively sanctioned under the Operation Zero Exercise.

“All formations have been mandated to prioritise critical corridors, crash prone locations, gridlock points and major inter-state routes, while ensuring sustained visibility of FRSC personnel as a strong deterrent to traffic violations,” the Corps Marshal said.

He implored construction and road maintenance companies currently operating on major highways to open up carriageways, clear avoidable bottlenecks and effective traffic control around work zones during the festive travel period.

He stressed that easing congestion at construction points will significantly alleviate the hardship of the motoring public and enhance safe and smooth movement.

The Corps Marshal charged Commanding Officers to intensify safety advocacy at motor parks, markets, religious centres and public gatherings, while cautioning motorists against speeding, drunk driving and dangerous overtaking, which he said remain leading causes of fatal crashes and would attract decisive enforcement actions.

He also urged enhanced collaboration with sister security agencies, emergency responders, transport unions and community leaders to ensure seamless traffic control and swift response to crashes and obstructions.

No fewer than 16 drivers have been arrested and booked by operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State for overspeeding along the Abeokuta–Sagamu expressway.

The state command deployed laser radar gun technology following findings that overspeeding remains the leading cause of road accidents in the state.

The Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, who led a special intervention patrol on the Sagamu–Abeokuta road on Tuesday, said the operation was part of efforts to achieve the FRSC’s 2025 Corporate Strategic Goal 1, which targets a 10 per cent reduction in road traffic fatalities and injuries, particularly during the festive period.

According to him, the laser radar gun was used to apprehend drivers for speeding violations, while speed-limiting devices were also installed in offending vehicles. “Sixteen offenders were booked for speeding violations,” Fasakin said.

He warned motorists against the dangers of overspeeding and overloading, urging them to prioritise safety while driving. Fasakin also assured residents of Ogun State of the FRSC’s commitment to ensuring a safe motoring environment across the state.

Peller: FRSC warns celebrities, influencer against road filming

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a stern warning to celebrities, social media influencers, and content creators, against using public roads to create online content, citing the dangers and illegality of the practice.

The FRSC’s stance was prompted by a viral video showing TikToker Peller live-streaming while driving, which led to a road crash.

Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, in a statement signed by the corps spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide, emphasised that using phones to record or stream while driving distracts drivers, putting lives at risk, and is a clear breach of traffic laws.

According to Mohammed, the FRSC will take legal action against anyone involved in reckless driving, phone use while driving, or distracted driving, with the Lagos state sector commander set to initiate proceedings.

The FRSC also calls on entertainment groups and influencer communities to educate members on safe driving practices.

“Expectedly, the Corps Marshal therefore calls on Actors Guilds, entertainment associations, influencer networks and content creator communities to urgently rein in their members and promote responsible conduct, particularly on Nigerian roads.

“Celebrities and influencers wield enormous influence, especially among young Nigerians, and must be seen as ambassadors of safety, not symbols of recklessness”, Mohammed said.

The FRSC warns that it will apply the full weight of the law against anyone found engaging in distracted or reckless driving, regardless of their social status.

“FRSC will not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against any individual, celebrity or otherwise, found engaging in distracted or reckless driving. No social media content, online trend or momentary clout is worth a human life”, the statement concluded.

Carloha, FRSC urge motorists to end distracted driving

Carloha Nigeria, the assembler and franchise holder of Chery vehicles in Nigeria, has partnered with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to drive awareness during the 2025 Ember-Months Safety Campaign.

The FRSC has consistently championed road safety advocacy across Nigeria, especially during the Ember Months when accident rates tend to rise, mostly due to human factors.

This year’s campaign theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Driving: Stop Distracted Driving,” emphasises the importance of driver behaviour as the first line of defence against crashes.

As part of the collaboration, Carloha Nigeria is supporting the FRSC RS2 Headquarters, Lagos, with the donation of reflective jackets for improved officer visibility and information-packed flyers for public sensitisation throughout the campaign period.

Speaking on the initiative, Carloha General Manager, Marketing, Felix Mahan, said, “Our partnership with the FRSC underscores Carloha and Chery’s commitment to promoting safer roads and encouraging responsible driving habits, especially during the high-traffic end-of-year period.”

He added that although many Chery vehicles feature advanced safety technologies – including driver-assist systems, anti-collision and emergency brake assist, lane departure and distraction warnings, and multiple airbags – the company considers it essential to reinforce a culture of alertness, discipline, and personal responsibility among motorists.

Zonal Commanding Officer, RS2 Headquarters, Lagos, ACM Ann Oladayo, expressed appreciation for Carloha’s support.

“We are delighted to have Carloha and Chery partner with us on this year’s Ember-Months campaign. The reflective jackets and flyers will significantly enhance the visibility of our officers during public enlightenment activities and support our efforts to reduce road traffic crashes,” she said.

Oladayo encouraged other corporate organisations to emulate Carloha and Chery in backing initiatives that promote safer road use across Nigeria.

FRSC to prosecute TikToker Peller over alleged reckless driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikTok streamer, Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a road traffic crash linked to distracted driving.

The Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of reckless road use among celebrities, content creators and social media influencers, warning that such behaviour endangers lives and undermines national road safety efforts.

The warning followed a viral video showing Peller engaging in a live video stream while driving, an act the FRSC said reportedly resulted in a crash.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the corps spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed described the act as unlawful and dangerous, noting that it could have led to loss of lives.

“The incident serves as a grim reminder that fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads,” the corps marshal said.

He stressed that live streaming, content creation or any activity that distracts a driver while driving is a direct violation of traffic regulations and poses serious risks to both the driver and other road users.

According to him, such conduct also undermines ongoing efforts to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.

Mohammed directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to commence prosecution against the individual involved for reckless driving, use of a phone while driving and distracted driving, in line with existing traffic laws.

He also called on professional bodies within the entertainment industry, including actors’ guilds, influencer networks and content creator associations, to take responsibility for the conduct of their members and promote responsible behaviour on Nigerian roads.

The corps marshal noted that celebrities and influencers wield significant influence, especially among young Nigerians, and warned that they must serve as ambassadors of safety rather than symbols of recklessness.

Reiterating the FRSC’s zero-tolerance stance, Mohammed said the corps would not hesitate to apply the full weight of the law against anyone found engaging in reckless or distracted driving, regardless of status.

“No social media content, online trend or momentary clout is worth a human life,” he said, reminding motorists that public roads are shared spaces governed by laws designed to protect lives.

He encouraged Nigerians to report dangerous driving behaviours and support collective efforts to make highways safer.

“Once citizens will abide by those ones, we are sure that road crashes will reduce drastically and we will achieve our target of reducing auto accidents by 50 per cent by year 2030.

Mohammed also highlighted the alarming rate of road-related trauma in Nigeria, noting that the country records more than 6,000 deaths annually.
