  • 15% of road crashes in Lagos in 2024 due to distractions – FRSC

15% of road crashes in Lagos in 2024 due to distractions – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos Sector Command says over 15 per cent of Road Traffic Crashes (RTC) recorded in Lagos State in 2024 were due to distractions.

The State Sector Commander, Kehinde Hamzat, disclosed this at the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign held on Thursday in Lagos.

The sensitisation campaign in collaboration with Guinness Nigeria Ltd., had the theme, ‘Take Responsibility for your Safety – Stop Distracted Driving’.

Hamzat listed some of the distractions prevalent in the year despite existing laws and continuous censorship to include mobile phone use while driving and gaming.

“Today’s events, therefore, is a call to action, a call to every driver, commuter, pedestrian, police operators, and enforcement agencies to take personal responsibility for safety.

“Road safety is not the sole duty of the federal system, or law enforcement entity, it is a shared responsibility,” he said.

He pointed out that what FRSC was actually looking for was hinged on the five pillars of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, even when a crash happens, it would result in zero fatality.

“Some of the pillars, government have a role to play, drivers, and even pedestrians.

“Road safety management is one of the pillars, in this situation legislation should be in place and one that will establish a traffic agency.

“Second is safer roads plus mobility, this ensures the kind of road built takes care of the motorist, pedestrian, as Lagos State is trying to do so in some of their roads.

“The third is safer vehicles, and the fourth is the safer road users, which has to do with how knowledgeable one was as a road user, a driver, pedestrian,” he said.

Hamzat said putting all these precautions in place, there was the need to put a post crash care to ensure that people are close to medical facilities, so that when there was a crash, the golden hour must be reflected.

The Zonal Commanding Officer, FRSC comprising Lagos and Ogun States, Assistant Corps Marshal Ann Oladayo, said FRSC always embarked on Ember months campaign to bring safety consciousness to the public.

Oladayo, represented by Corps Commander Anthony Daudu, noted that during this period, people tend to rush, trying to conclude activities, landmark projects that they had embarked on.

He added that in trying to put all these complex things together and in haste, most times confusion arose and this leads to accidents.

“In this period, FRSC is ensuring that the public knows what they are doing, the issue of patience, doing things right and taking things easy is of essence.

“Doing things on the bottomline of drunkenness is dangerous and not acceptable, take things easy, life has no duplicate,” she said.

Earlier, Mr Rotimi Odusola, Corporate Relations Director, Guinness Nigeria Plc., noted that the organisation had consistently advocated that their consumers and the general public take responsibility for their safety by not drinking while driving.

According to Odusola, combining alcohol with driving is a form of distraction, it is indeed a criminal offence.

“Any form of distraction is a recipe for disaster, so we encourage everyone to avoid such while driving, if you choose to drink, do not drive,” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the sensitisation campaign had in attendance Special Marshals, National Union of Road Traffic Workers, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, National Emergency Management Agency, Lagos office.

Also in attendance are chiefs from Ojodu land and Isheri Kingdom, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Nigerian Police, Truck and Cargo Operators.

“Ember Months’’: Why accident increases on highways – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says most accidents on the highways are mostly caused by impatience, over-speeding and flouting of traffic rules and regulations.

The Corps added that the situation is aggravated during the “Ember Months’’, being the peak of activities and high vehicular movements across the country.

Mrs Oluseyi Abah, FRSC Unit Commander in Okitipupa, stated these, during the 2025 Ember Month Motorcade Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign at Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the campaign is themed: “Take Responsibility of Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving”

Addressing commercial drivers and other roads users at the event, Abbah warned against speeding and violating other traffic rules and regulations while driving on the highways during the period.

“This is the end of the year when citizens, especially drivers and road users, think they can make up for what they have lost since January, which causes speeding and traffic rules violations which may eventually lead to crashes.

“I advise them against speeding, receiving calls while driving.

“They should ensure they obey all traffic rules and regulations to be safe for their loved ones,’’ Abah said.

She said the motorcade sensitisation and enlightenment was a directive from the Corps Marshal, to sensitise and enlighten drivers and other road users.

On his part, Mr Andrew Ogunsakin, Chairman, Okitipupa LGA advised residents to abide by all traffic rules and regulations, saying that any accident recorded would affect, at least, one family in the council.

Ogunsakin who was represented by Mrs Iyabode Wole-Awolere, Head of Local Government Administration, also urged drivers to always take to safety precautions at all times in order to avoid crashes.

“I commend the FRSC for the sensitisation programme, and I implore our drivers and other road users to always take to all safety precautions for them to be alive for their families,’’ Ogunsakin said.

NAN reports that the sensitisation motorcade moved from the local government secretariat to New Garage, enroute the Old Garage to Okitipupa Main Market through Igbokoda road.

Members of FRSC Special Marshals, Road Safety Clubs, National Youths Service Corps, officers from the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Amotekun Corps and other law enforcement agencies participated in the campaign.

21 die, 144 injured in Anambra crashes – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra state on Monday disclosed that 21 persons died while 144 were injured between January and October in the State.

Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno gave the statistics during a press conference flagging off the 2025 ember months public enlightenment campaign, themed, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety: Stop Distracted Driving.”

She said the number of casualties were recorded in 57 crashes, attributing most of them to over speeding.

The FRSC boss highlighted part of activities lined up for the ember months campaign to include motorcade rally and town hall meeting to sensitize road users and stakeholders on need to take their safety more seriously.

She said: “We’ll be having motorcade rally across the state, especially parks to sensitize road users, including drivers to ensure they take responsibility for their safety by avoiding distractive driving.

“We’re also be having a town hall meeting where we’re going to invite drivers, road users and other traffic agencies to ensure we’re on the same page.

“On our officers, we’ll keep training and retraining during in-house training. We brief our men every morning to ensure they’re at the utmost best.

“If you see any of them who misbehaves, it doesn’t mean they lack training. You’ll always have deviants in any organization.”

Delivering address of Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, the Sector Commander quoted him as saying the choice of the 2025 End-of-Year campaign theme was to address road traffic infringements by drivers largely responsible for previous road crash records.

“The 2024 Operation Zero (15 December, 2024 – 15 January 2025) crash statistics reveal that 432 persons were killed; 2,070 persons were injured out of 533 reported cases of road crashes.

“The records also showed that the major causes of those crashes were driver fatigue, and overloading of persons,

“Conveyance of persons in haulage vehicles and traveling with fuel in plastic containers.

“Apparently, driver behaviour is a fundamental element in determining safety on our highways.

“The theme reinforces the view that human factor is one of the major causes of road crashes. It also draws attention to the fact that drivers are largely responsible for crashes on our highways.

“As we are all aware, the ember months is a season marked by increased travel, higher traffic volume and attendant rise in road crash injuries and fatalities,” the Corp Marshal address read.

FRSC apprehends 250 vehicles in 2 days for overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) FCT Command says it apprehended more than 250 commercial vehicles in just two days for overloading, as it begins full enforcement of safety regulations in the territory.

The FCT Sector Commander, Corps Commander Felix Theman, disclosed this in a statement signed by the Command’s Public Education Officer, Mrs Helen Ntaji, on Saturday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the enforcement, which started on Oct. 2, specifically targeted the practice of carrying two passengers in the front seat of taxis.

Theman said that the two-day figure demonstrated the scale of violations in the FCT, in spite months of sustained engagement and education to transport unions.

He explained that his top priority since assumption of office had been restoring passenger dignity and safety, noting that enforcement was the most civil way to ensure compliance.

According to him, overloading makes the use of seatbelts impossible, weakens vehicle suspension and tyres and limits driver control in emergencies.

Theman added that the command’s operation was being carried out in collaboration with mobile magistrate courts to ensure immediate prosecution of offenders.
