  • Caution reckless drivers – FRSC tells passengers

The Ondo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) wants passengers to caution drivers against reckless driving during and after the Easter festival.

The Deputy Sector Commander and Head of Operations, Mr Olusegun Ogungbemide, says  it is imperative for the FRSC to advise the public on the necessity of cautioning drivers against reckless driving in view of the spate of carnage on the road.

He spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

“It is not just about drivers alone, members of public also have responsibilities as passengers in any vehicle,” Ogungbemide said.

“Passengers should caution drivers tactfully anytime they notice recklessness without distracting the drivers. It is the passenger’s responsibility to advise driver to keep to safety rules.

“Data available to us has confirmed that passengers are always the victims anytime there is a crash, while drivers most of the time escape unhurt.

“That is why passengers should always be proactive anytime they are in transit so as not to allow their life to be wasted by reckless drivers, especially during festivities.”

Ogungbemide said the command had deployed men of the corps to critical areas of the state, especially highways, to ensure smooth Easter celebration.

Accordingly the command has stationed emergency ambulances in such critical areas as Akure, Owo and Ikare Akoko axis in case of crashes.

He said FRSC personnel “are working day and night to make sure that crashes do not happen and eventually if it happened, our men are expected to be there within 15 minutes to rescue victims.”

He also said the command had removed vehicles parked on highways, asking that “if there is anyone we have not removed, we are pleading with the public to reach out to us immediately.”

He announced that the command was carrying out “Operation No Mercy” to enforce traffic rules and regulations across the state.

  • FRSC to prosecute drivers without valid licence in Osun

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun Command, says it will start prosecuting drivers without valid driver’s licence and expired licence on April 1.

Mr Anthony Oko, the Sector Commander, disclosed this during a stakeholders meeting yesterday in Osogbo.

Oko said the command had created enough awareness on the need for drivers to procure genuine driver’s licence and not to drive without a valid licence.

“Any driver caught driving without a licence is regarded as a monster and a killer.

“A driver without a licence is even endangering the lives of people when they drive a vehicle, because to be a driver, you have to go to a driving school, where you are trained and issued a certificate.

“Any driver that is driving without a licence and gets involved in an accident would be treated as a murderer,” he said

The sector commander also stressed the importance of going to a certified driving school for a driver’s licence and a refresher course for old drivers.

He cautioned drivers against obtaining fake driver’s licence, adding that fake driver’s licence was difficult to differentiate from the original.

He said that any driver’s licence obtained without the applicant physically going to FRSC for capturing and Bio-metrics was fake.

Oko advised drivers to visit FRSC website on www.frsc.gov.ng to verify the authenticity of their drivers licence or send a text “NDLEA status” space driver’s licence number to 33811.

  • FRSC at 30 and road safety in Nigeria

FRSC at 30 and road safety in Nigeria

Between February 18, 1988 when the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) was established and February 18, 2018 (30 Years), the Agency has achieved a great feat, particularly in the past three years. Without doubt, the FRSC has made a remarkable landmark in the following areas among others:

    • Response to Emergencies: Frsc has been very prompt in responding to emergencies concerning road traffic crashes and other disasters. The 122 emergency number of FRSC is a 24 – hour response number, which has been very active.
    • Driving School Standardisation Programme (DSSP): Despite the fact that the process is still ongoing, the FRSC has performed remarkably well in establishing an effective collaboration with the relevant state government agencies, state Ministries of Transportation/Works, VIOs (VIS in Lagos State,) State Board of Internal Revenue (MVAA in Lagos State), state Traffic management authorities and the Association of Driving Instructors of Nigeria (a coalition of Driving Schools in Nigeria) to oversee the establishment and operation of Driving Schools in Nigeria.
    • Graduated driver licence scheme: Hitherto, it was very easy for someone to sit at home, send his passport photograph to the Driver Licence Centre and his Driver Licence will be delivered to him at home in a matter of hours or days. With the efforts of the visionary and indefatigable Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of FRSC, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi and his amiable Deputy Corps Marshal, Mr Kab Lawal, it is practically impossible for anybody to get the Nigeria Driver Licence without going through the driving schools. Actions are currently ongoing towards the elimination of the anomalies being perpetrated by some corrupt officers and their cronies in some Driving Schools.
    • Traffic Management: FRSC has been up and doing in the areas of the removal of obstructions on the highways, control of traffic flow, monitoring of the speed and compliance of motorists to the National Road Traffic Regulations.

However there is a need for FRSC to take more proactive actions in the following areas:

    • Share experience with the Vehicle Inspection Officers (Vehicle Inspection Service Department in Lagos State) for the compulsory structured theory and practical tests to ensure that the Nigeria Driver Licence is issued only to candidates, who are properly trained in the Accredited Driving Schools and properly Tested without bias by the VIOs.
    • Increase the collaboration with other stakeholders, particularly through a regular stakeholder’s forum as already promised by the Corps Marshal to eliminate the information gap.
    • The state governments and the FCT should be more proactive and increase their level of cooperation with the FRSC to eliminate the current cat and rat system of collaboration, which has been working against the progress of Road Safety Administration and subsequently the accomplishment of the pillars of the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety in Nigeria(2010-2020).
    • Improve data collection, especially through effective collaboration with the relevant stakeholders and also accelerate Accident Investigation and Reporting in Nigeria.

The Federal Government should provide more funds for the operation of FRSC while state governments should also increase the funding of their Traffic Management Agencies to further compliment the efforts of FRSC.

In a nutshell, the FRSC has performed enormously well as the lead Agency in Road Safety Administration in Nigeria and Nigerians look forward for more accomplishments in the coming years.

  • Data capture not required for licence renewal – FRSC

Data capture not required for licence renewal – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says there is no need for data capturing by applicants wishing to renew their driver’s licence.

The Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday that the agency departed from the old system long time ago.

Motorists, according to him, can now “renew their licence without going through capture.”

He added:”The choice of coming to capture is yours, as long as we have your data base at the initial stage and its already in the system, you don’t really need to be captured any longer.”

Omeje said that there is provision to bypass capture in the new process of renewal of licence.

The FRSC boss, however, noted that recapturing of data would only happen when people want to change their passport photographs or change some variables provided at the initial stage in the data.

“The whole essence of renewal is to update your records. You might have changed your residential address and all other variables except date of birth which is constant.

“And it is possible that somewhere somehow you had an accident that has given you mark or scars on your face, that has not been there before and if you don’t do the update,  of not going for capture, you may be embarrassed when you go to the embassy,” Omeje noted.

He also advised motorists to go to their various centres for collection of their drivers’ licences.

Over 55,000 motorists are yet to collect their processed drivers’ licences at various designated centres in Lagos State.

The sector commander had said, in October, that about 55,412 processed drivers’ licences were ready and waiting for collection by their owners at the various designated centres in the state.

According to him, there are no backlogs on the issuance of drivers’ licences again in the state.

“We have 55,412 uncollected licences across our stations in Lagos State.

“It is unfortunate that people do not come to collect their licences.

“We produced 48, 423 out of which 14,323 were fresh; 33,899 were renewed and 199 were re-issued as a result of loss or damage.

“The only challenge we are facing now is the collection of these licences because we have so many of them in our various centres.

“Not because they have not been produced but the applicants are not coming to collect them,” he said.

The sector commander appealed to motorists, who have applied for drivers’ licences, to visit the centres and collect their licenses before the expiration date.

Omeje said that Lagos command had established some dedicated numbers for whoever has any complaint concerning either delay in issuance or collection of the licences.

According to him, 08150654567 is the number to call by any applicant in case there is a delay in issuance of the driver licences.

He said that the numbers were created solely for the purpose of attending to issues related to licence.

The sector commander noted that drivers could now renew their licences for N10,350 for a five-year duration while three-year licence costs N6,350.
