    Kaduna: Commercial driver suffers epilepsy on wheel, kills pedestrian

    Multiple deaths of passengers and pedestrians in Kaduna city was averted Friday as a commercial driver of an intra-city bus services lost control as a result of epilepsy attack while conveying passengers from the popular Central Market towards Kakuri end of the metropolis.

    However, an eyewitness account said, the driver killed one of the pedestrians who was identified as a female street beggar.

    It was gathered that the said epileptic driver lost control from Jos road side of Ahmadu Bello Way onto Gwandu road, about 500 metres apart, with loud noise from the wobbling vehicle.

    Several passersby were said to have sustained injuries, and were rushed to different hospitals in the metropolis by Good Samaritans.

    According to an eye witness, Ibrahim Ali “We were sitting in front of this shop, all of a sudden, we saw a bus skidding off Ahmadu Bello Way, from Jos road area to as far to Gwandu road area, before Katsina roundabout.

    “The driver was foaming at the mouth as soon as he was brought out of the vehicle, and from all indications, he was suffering from epilepsy, and some people rushed him to hospital.

    “One female beggar by the road side was killed by the driver, and many people were injured, and taken to hospitals,” he said.

    Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) claimed ignorance of the accident, saying that the Commission did not have record of such accident.

    Efforts to get the Kaduna State Police Command Spokesman; DSP Abubakar Zubairu to respond on the accident was fruitless as he did not pick his phone as at the time of filing this report.

    Man killed, property destroyed in Ondo auto crash

    Aggrieved youths in Iwaro-Oka,Akoko Southwest local government of Ondo state Thursday barricaded the ever busy Oka-Akoko-Abuja road in protest against the incessant carnage on the highway.

    Sources said a trailer lost control at Oke-Maria and killed a man identified as Sunday Mogaji inside his house.

    This development reportedly gingered the irate youths in the area to troop out in anger and blocked the road against motorists plying the major highway.

    According to a youth leader, Idowu Komolafe “we are not happy with the daily occurrence of road mishaps at Oke-Maria which had already claimed many lives without remedy-

    “We have been pleading with the authorities concerned to find solution to the rampant carnage,but no success.

    “It is unfortunate that many innocent lives have been wasted on regular basis and youths are mostly the victims, we cannot continue like this“

    The Olubaka of Oka-Akoko, Oba Adebori Adeleye symphatised with the victims, urging relevant agencies to assist in solving the problem.

    The Unit Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)Jimoh Basiru confirmed that one person died, while his corpse has been deposited at Ikare-Akoko Specialist Hospital.

    The Ota Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), ACC Leye Adegboyega, yesterday, decorated newly promoted officers of the Command.

    Adegboyega said the promotion was the reward of hard work. He urged them to be more committed and diligent.

    The Unit Commander said they have more responsibilities and so they must be more effective and efficient.

    He urged the officers to work harder to enable the agency achieve its goals for the year, which include safe fleet regulation, sustained stakeholders consultation; collaboration with states on improved road safety administration, improving enforcement and public education to reduce road traffic crashes.

    The Unit Commander urged other officers not to be discouraged as promotion comes from God. He said they should continue to render their best as there is always another opportunity.

    Among the newly decorated officers is the wife of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) National President, Route Commander Adijat Odusile.

    Five die on Lagos-Ibadan expressway accident

    Five persons died on Tuesday in an accident involving a Mercedes Benz truck and a Mazda bus at Sagamu on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun.

    The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Ogun, Mr Adegoke Adetunji, who confirmed the incident, said that the bus lost control and ran into the truck which was also on motion from the rear.

    Adetunji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta that 23 persons were involved in the accident, with five confirmed dead while 16 sustained injuries.

    “We went to the scene and met the crash which involved the truck and the Mazda bus.

    “A Mazda bus with registration number APP36XA and a Mercedes Benz truck with registration number GNN774XA were travelling to Ibadan before they rammed into each other.

    “We understand that the bus, which was on a high speed, lost control and rammed into the moving truck and was torn into pieces because of its bad shape.

    “The bus was not in good shape and was not supposed to be on the road.

    “Motorist should obey the speed limit and ensure that their vehicles are properly maintained. They should also install speed limit device in their vehicles,’’ he said.

    Adetunji said that the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital mortuary in Sagamu while the injured were also being treated in the health facility.

  • Six students, driver, die in Jigawa auto crash

    The Jigawa Command of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) on Monday said six students and a driver died in an auto crash involving a Toyota bus with Reg. No. 41A 05 YB on Gaya-Kano road.

    Mr Zayyanu Ibrahim, the Public Relations Officer of the command, told newsmen in Dutse that the accident occurred at about 12: 55 p.m. on Sunday.

    Ibrahim said the accident happened when the driver of the bus lost control at Zangon Buji village in Dutse Local Government Area.

    He said that the bus was conveying Exchange students of Unity Schools from Damaturu, Yobe, to Abuja.

    The said four of the victims died on the spot, while the rest died on Monday at the Rasheed Shekoni Specialists Hospital, Dutse.

    According to the public relations officer, 16 others who sustained various degree of injury were receiving treatment at the Dutse General Hospital and the Rasheed Shekoni Specialists Hospital.

    He advised motorists to desist from speeding under whatever circumstances.

    FRSC advises motorists to desist from night journeys

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), on Monday restated its advice for motorists to desist from embarking on night journeys.

    Mr. Nseobong Akpabio, Zonal Commander, FRSC, Lagos and Ogun State, gave the advice when he visited their office in Badagry.

    He said that 80 per cent of accidents during the yuletide occurred during the night.

    “We all know the state of the roads in Nigeria; the government is trying to improve on the roads in the country.

    “But for the time being, motorists should stop embarking on night trips.

    “Travelling in the night makes it more difficult for the driver of the vehicle to notice bad spots on the road and this usually leads to a lot of mishaps.

    “Most of the accidents that were recorded in Lagos and Ogun State during the yuletide happened at night. That is why we are advising motorists to desist from that act.

    “We have carried out different enlightenment programmes in order to enlighten the public on the dangers of travelling at night’’, he said.

    The zonal commander said that from April 1, all commercial vehicles that had not installed speed limit device would be prosecuted.

    “We are starting with commercial vehicles then others would join at a later date. People must try to understand that this device is not just to regulate excess speeding.

    “It also helps to minimise fuel consumption in the car and this in turn helps the cars to last longer.

    “Most transport companies are already using these devices and they have been reaping the reward form it. So, people should be encouraged to install the device’’, Akpabio said.

    He called on the Lagos state government to assist the agency with patrol vans, ambulances and towing vehicles.

    “The Lagos state government should assist us by donating utility vehicles so as to enable us to carry out our functions more effectively.

    “Lagos has a broad and wide range of places that need to be covered adequately and the only way to ensuring that is by getting more vehicles.

    “The zonal commander warned FRSC officers to desist from taking bribes. “Anyone caught will face the consequences,’’ he said.

    FRSC to train NOA staff on road safety education

    Plans are on the way by the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC to provide road safety education to staff of the National Orientation Agency, NOA as the  two bodies collaborate to reduce road carnage using public sensitization.

    This was disclosed when the NOA Director General, Mr. Mike Omeri received the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi in his office Tuesday.

    Omeri noted that road safety education for NOA staff as public sensitization agents and their recognition as same by the public had become necessary to provide support for FRSC in the quest to check the self-endangering habits of Nigerians on the road.

    He said such habits, such as over-speeding, use of cell phones while driving, disregard for road signs and pedestrian bridges were responsible for the high rate of accident fatalities in the country, adding that massive public reorientation in that regard is critical to reversing the trend.

    Omeri noted that the effort of security agencies, especially the FRSC, at saving the lives of Nigerians is a critical part of patriotism deserving the support of all Nigerians and commended the innovations, civil manners and high morale of FRSC officers as exemplary.

    In his remarks, the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi disclosed that the road crash reports for the just ended 2015/2016 yuletide season revealed an improvement on that of the preceding yuletide.

    He traced the improvement to the corps’ public sensitization before and during the season, stressing that with increased public sensitization, Nigerian roads would become increasingly safer; hence the road safety education training for NOA staff. He also commended stakeholders for their cooperation during the yuletide.

    Oyeyemi announced that the FRSC production plant for road signs will be ready for operations this year and the corps will collaborate with state governments to ensure the production, installation and maintenance of appropriate road signs across the country.

    He further disclosed that the corps was working out modalities for providing skilled drivers to private individuals who are not used to long distance driving during festive seasons for affordable fees as part of efforts to reduce road accidents.

    Concerning the new April 1, 2016 implementation date for speed limiting devices in vehicles, the FRSC Corps Marshal stated that if 60 percent of commercial vehicles in the country complied with the policy, road carnages would be drastically reduced by the

  • IEI partners FRSC to promote road safety

    International Energy Insurance (IEI) Plc is  partnering with the Federal Road Safety Corps, in driving home the message of road safety during these ember months.

    This was made known in a statement made available to journalists in Lagos by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Tamuno Kiri.

    According to him, the IEI and FRSC partnership is to appeal to motorists to obey traffic rules and reduce overspreading that could lead  lead to road accidents which are avoidable.

    He said: “IEI in partnership with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has begun the 2015 ember months special patrol with the theme: “driving safely into 2016’. The programe was designed to consolidate   the successes recorded in 2014. With the efforts of the Federal Road Safety Corps and other Government Agencies, there has been a drastic reduction in road crashes nationwide.

    “Reports state  that Nigeria loses three per cent of its annual GDP to road accidents. In 2014 alone, the country lost an equivalent of $10 billion to road traffic crashes, hence the need to champion the cause of road safety especially during these ember months.

    “Nigeria has the largest road network in West Africa and second largest in sub-Saharan Africa. It is reported that from 1960, to the third quarter of 2015, Nigeria has recorded 344, 367 road accident-related deaths with those of the deaths within productive age.”

    FRSC promotes 442 to Inspector cadre

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has promoted 442 Marshal Inspectors in line with the commitment of the commission to reward efficiency and punish indiscipline in the Service.

    This is contained in a statement signed by Mr. Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy, FRSC and made available to journalists yesterday in Abuja.

    According to Kazeem, the commission promoted 442 personnel within the ranks of Deputy Chief Inspector and Marshal Inspector III.

    “At the end of the last promotion exercise, 38 Deputy Chief Inspectors were promoted to the rank of Chief Inspector, while 80 Assistant Chief Inspectors got promoted to the rank of Deputy Chief Inspector.

    “Also, 66 Principal Marshal Inspectors were promoted to the rank of Assistant Chief Inspector, while 77 Senior Marshal Inspectors moved to Principal Marshal Inspectors,” he said.

    Kazeem added that 85 Marshal Inspectors I were promoted to the rank of Senior Marshal Inspector, while 82 Marshal Inspectors II were promoted to Marshal Inspectors I.

    According to Kazeem, 14 Marshal Inspectors III were promoted to Marshal Inspectors II.
    Kazeem added that Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, Corps Marshal of the commission, urged the officers on efficiency and dedication to duty at all time.

    The Federal Government recently approved the promotion of over 900 officers below the rank of Corps Commanders, to boost the morale of the FRSC personnel.

    FRSC: Road crashes reduced by 33 per cent during Chrismas

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has said that road crashes across the country was reduced by 33 per cent during the Christmas period.

    This is contained in a statement signed by Mr Bisi Kazeem, Head, Media Relations and Strategy in the commission and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Abuja.

    He said that the reduction was a “testimony to the robust efforts’’ of the FRSC to stem crashes on the nation’s roads during the festive period

    Kazeem, however disclosed that the commission recorded 113 road traffic crashes within one week of patrol across the country.

    He said: “113 road traffic crashes were recorded on the roads between Dec.19 and Dec.26, compared with 169 recorded during the same time last year, which shows reduction of 33 per cent.

    “Similarly 86 lives were lost as at Saturday compared to 109 lost within same period last year.

    “This shows improvement of 21 per cent in FRSC’s efforts to save lives on the roads.

    “422 people were injured within the period this year which amounts to 30 per cent improvement in operation when compared with 606 people that were injured last year.

    “Also, 934 people were involved in crashes within the period under review, compared with 1,284 involved last year within the same period, while 426 people were rescued this year unlike 570 last year.”

    Kazeem said that 25 per cent improvement was recorded in the area of saving lives on the roads.

    On prosecution of those who violated road rules and regulations, the FRSC spokesman said that the commission had so far arraigned 878 traffic violators, convicted 783 and discharged others.

    He urged road users to always obey traffic rules and regulations and cooperate with traffic managers for free flow of movement.

    NAN recalls that Mr Boboye Oyeyemi, FRSC Corps Marshal, inaugurated ‘’Operation Zero tolerance” on Dec. 18 in Onitsha, Anambra“with the theme: ‘’Drive safely into 2016.’’

    Oyeyemi said that the commission deployed 36,000 personnel and equipment for the exercise.

    He said that 200 mobile courts was set up nationwide, to try and punish traffic offenders.

    The FRSC boss expressed the determination of the commission to ensure that travellers had smooth and safe journey to their various destinations.
