We will deliver P/Harcourt ring road on schedule, says Fubara

Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has promised that the multi-billion naira Port Harcourt Ring Road will be delivered on schedule.

Fubara spoke on Wednesday, March 20, when he visited the site of the project to assess the extent of work that had been done by the contractors.

The governor’s chief press secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, in a statement, said the governor rode the stretch of the road from the Obiri-Ikwerre-Airport Road axis, through the Jesuit Memorial School to Elikpokwuodu Community, then to Rumuosi and Ozuoba communities before terminating the inspection tour at UTC Junction.

The inspection tour traversed through three local government areas of the state, Ikwerre, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt City.

Fubara explained that the contract for the Port Harcourt Ring Road was the first of such agreements that he signed on the assumption of office.

He said a lot of money had been expended on the project, with the driving objective of making sure that it was delivered to Rivers people.

He said: “I think that we are good, considering the understanding that we had with Julius Berger Nigeria PLC.

“We signed off that in 36 months, this project will be done and delivered, and with what we are seeing, we are meeting up that target.

“I think that we have a few issues; the price rate of things at that time we signed the contract and what subsists presently is no longer the same.

“But whatever it is, I have assured them that we are going to provide the necessary support to make sure that we deliver this project.

“You know this project is very important to us. It is one of the first things that I signed off on when I came in as the Governor of this State.

“It is a signature infrastructure project for me, whichever way anybody wants to look at it. We signed on for it. We are paying dearly for it, and it’s one of the objectives of this Administration to make sure that we deliver it to our people.”

In his remarks, the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Dr. Lars Richter, who conducted the governor round the project site, said work had advanced after piling and laying of beams on the first flyover, which started on January 15, 2024, and accomplished two months after.

Richter explained that while they had intensified work on the second flyover with beams ready to be laid, significant strides had been achieved in laying out the road and the drains for accelerated construction.

He assured me that the project would be delivered on schedule, and within specifications.

Fubara, Akpabio’s banter at Wigwe’s burial sparks row in Rivers

The banter between the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Rivers state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, during the funeral of Herbert Wigwe, his wife and son, has sparked a row in Rivers.

Fubara in his speech during the solemn occasion highlighted the legacies of the deceased and wondered why with the ephemeral nature of life, politicians would still struggle to kill for power.

The governor said: “Here we are, people from all walks of life to pay our last respect to the Wigwes because he was able to affect lives positively when he was alive even when he was not a politician, yet he controlled the business class as well as the political class with his fame, affluent and wealth but could not control death, which brings me to a question to the politicians, why the struggle to kill and bury one another over power?”

But, Akpabio swiftly responded to Fubara immediately he mounted the rostrum to speak and told the governor to stop struggling if there was nothing in the struggle.

Akpabio said: “I will answer you. We are not talking politics. In 2006, I wanted to become the deputy governor and the then deputy governor invited me, and this office has no money, there is nothing in it. I don’t know why you still insist on removing me from here and taking over.

“So, a woman who went with me said Your Excellency, don’t wait for impeachment, just resign since there is nothing in it. He stood up and started punching the woman. I said Your Excellency, don’t punch the woman, she is telling the truth, and there is nothing in it. That’s why I want it because you are too big for it.

“Your Excellency, Governor Fubara, if there is nothing in the struggle, don’t struggle.”

The banter, however, generated mixed reactions with some stakeholders condemning Akpabio’s decision to reply to the governor on such an occasion.

Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) considered Akpabio’s response as an affront to the governor.

The party said Akpabio had become an enemy of Rivers, citing the Senate President’s past, and present actions and utterances on issues concerning Rivers and Governor Fubara.

The PDP in a statement by its publicity secretary, Sydney Tambari Gbara, accused Akpabio of consistently showing disdain, disrespect and hatred for Fubara through his utterances at public functions in the state.

Gbara said: “The Rivers Governor asked a solemn and mind-bugging question to underline the ephemerality of life and the futility of political brigandage in the quest for power. The statement itself took mourners on a philosophical drive of sober reflection on the gains and vanity of life.

“The applause from sympathizers and mourners at the burial, however, drew the anger of Senator Akpabio, who mounted the rostrum afterward to fight, after narrating a story between him and a former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom state over a power struggle, attempted to ridicule Governor Fubara by asking him to resign if there was no need to struggle to kill for power.

“His actions against Rivers people had never been pleasant but embarrassing, as he seems to have taken advantage of the political impasse in the state to perfect his evil enterprise of igniting more crises to the detriment of the state.

“Another instance of display of obvious hatred for Rivers people by Senator Akpabio was the harassment and attempted abduction of an illustrious daughter of the State, Gbene Joi Nunieh from her house here in Port Harcourt, during her appointment as NDDC Acting Managing Director, just to make sure that she was removed.

“Recently, at a church service in Tai local government area, the same Akpabio had made a ridiculous remark regarding the 2027 Governorship election in Rivers State.

“At the service, Akpabio had called on the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to look for somebody from the Ogoni extraction who will take over from Governor Siminialayi Fubara in 2027. Such a statement was a huge embarrassment which could provoke a crisis as the Governor has not told anyone that he would not seek reelection in 2027.”

The PDP believed that all the cited instances were indications of Akpabio’s desire to stir up sentiments and aggravate the political crisis already confronting the state.”

The party urged Akpabio to leverage his position as a statesman and Senate President to play the role of a mediator in resolving the crises instead of joining forces with the enemies of the state to fan the embers of war, disunity and destabilisation, through incisive comments.

PDP said: “The PDP, therefore, uses this medium to advise Senator Akpabio to refrain from verbal attacks on the Executive Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Sir Siminialayi Fubara as the people of the State would no longer take for granted, such comments capable of further dividing the people”.

The party further warned that if Senator Akpabio decided to continue to choose the path of dishonour by making negative unprovoked utterances against Fubara, he would no longer be welcomed into Rivers State again.

PDP appealed to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to call Akpabio to order insisting that his consistent throwing of tantrums at Fubara and the people was capable of provoking a crisis in Rivers.

It said such actions were against the tenets of the peace proclamation brokered by the President.

The party asked Akpabio to concentrate more on his job as Senate President and avoid delving into petty issues in Rivers State.

PDP said: “We enjoin Rivers people to continue to have faith in the present administration as it is poised to deliver democratic dividends to the poor and downtrodden people of the State, while also appealing to Rivers people to resist petty actions and utterances capable of derailing the direction of our focused administration under the leadership of Governor Fubara, no matter who or where it is coming from, and join forces with the party, to defend our people against enemies of the State”.

The party said the governor’s nomination for the award instituted for the first time by  the Silverbird Group showed that the governor’s peaceful disposition had been recognised and appreciated not only in the state but also nationally and internationally.

“What this means is that making sacrifice for peace to reign at anytime is not a sign of weakness but a source of strength because peace is not a virtue available to everyone. We urge the governor to continue to walk tall in his pursuit of peace in the state”, the party said.

    • I chose peace not because I’m weak – Gov

Rivers State Governor, Sir. Siminalayi Fubara, has upgraded the traditional stool of the King of Okochiri, Okirika, King Ateke Tom, from a second class to a first class status.

The governor also said following his disposition to peace, the people of Rivers felt liberated and ready to support his government.

He said such feeling of liberation propelled the people to organise special thanksgiving celebrations of his legal victory in the 23 local government areas on a weekly basis in their own volition.

Fubara spoke on Saturday at a special ceremony organised by the Council of Chiefs and the people of Okrika to honour the Amanyanabo of Okochiri Kingdom, King Ateke Tom.

The governor insisted that only peace could guarantee development adding that “nobody can ever get the best out of himself or from the society without a measure of peace”.

He said: “If you love your State, you will not be any part of anything that will bring destruction to it. It doesn’t matter who the person is. That is what people should understand.

“And for those of us who chose peace, it is not because we are weak but because we know and value this State. Whatever achievement that has been recorded by the previous administration, it is important that we sustain it. And that is the reason why we toe the path of peace.

“Look at what is happening in the 23 local government areas in the State. I am not asking anybody to go round to do thanksgiving as some of you might be thinking.

“These are people who wake up in the morning and say, we have been liberated. We want to tell people that we exist.

“And everyday you’re seeing the numbers, this is not artificial, this is organic support and why are we getting it, it is because of the peace that we stand for.”

The governor said public office holders should not talk carelessly, describing himself as not a noisemaker but a prudent leader.

Fubara said his achievements that had been well-documented would be displayed publicly at the appropriate time.

  • We will immortalise ‘our worthy son’, Wigwe, says Fubara

We will immortalise ‘our worthy son’, Wigwe, says Fubara

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has disclosed that the state would immortalise the late Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Access Holdings, Dr. Herbert Wigwe.

Speaking at the night of tributes organised on Tuesday by the Port Harcourt City One Love Family to reflect on the life and times of Wigwe, the governor said the late banker led an impactful life, affecting society positively.

He described the death of Wigwe as a double loss saying apart from happening at a time when he was the governor, the late banker was his in-law.

Fubara said: “For me, it is a double loss, not just as the governor of our dear state, still standing, but as an in-law. Herbert is from Isiokpo, my wife’s mother is from Isiokpo. As a matter of fact, they are even close, they’re relatives. So, you can see that this loss is really deep for my own family.

“But I have come to understand something about life. Those ones that God has favoured, that have the blessings of God that God really cherishes, he doesn’t like them to stay too long on earth because he doesn’t want them to get corrupt. But the wicked ones, the cruel ones, that you are praying for to die, will stay and they will not die.

“So, you should understand that what has happened to our brother and his family, yes, immediately, when it happened, we started feeling the pains, but at the long run, we would understand the message that God has just sent to us. It sounds painful but it has a special message.

“We have come to this world with nothing, we will leave this world, no matter how rich you are when you die, you will also leave with nothing. So, it is for us to appreciate the mystery of life, understanding that, what is most important is the number of persons that are still behind when you’re not there and say positive things about you.

“Not the ones that are drinking with you immediately, not the ones that join you to attend occasions and hail you. But how many, when you’re no longer there, can say oh, he is a good man, he’s a great man. For me, Herbert has come, he saw and he’s conquered. He has completed his work on earth. Our prayers should be, wherever he is going, because we can’t see, but let it be at the right place in heaven.

“I want to enjoin every one of you, as much as it looks difficult, let’s have that faith that the only one that can comfort us in this kind of situation is God and he is going to fill that gap for us.

“Don’t lose faith in God. We will, as a government, do everything within our power to immortalize some of the legacies of our dear brother. We have said it before and we are also making the commitment again publicly here before the Port Harcourt One Love Family.

“But you also owe Herbert something. He believed in this course, ensure that you do not deviate. That’s the truth. Today, we are all proud of this family called Port Harcourt One Love Family”.

The governor appealed to the people not to lose their direction but to keep sustaining the features of the Port Harcourt One Love Family.

He said: “It is unfortunate that it has happened. But the State will participate fully in all processes of the burial. We have just been informed that it will start next week, 4th to 8th, we are still expecting more information but we will participate and give the best of the State.”

Stop spreading lies against Fubara, Rivers PDP warns APC

Rivers State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the Caretaker Committee Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Chief  Tony  Okocha, to stop spreading lies against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

PDP in a statement yesterday by its Publicity Secretary, Sydney Gbara, told Okocha that Rivers people were satisfied with the performance of Fubara because the governor was meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the people.

Gbara said: “Fubara is a household name in the state due to the commitment he has shown in bringing development, good governance and happiness to the people.

“In less than six months in office, Governor Fubara has embarked on a number of people-oriented projects cutting across the length and breadth of the state.

“Among the projects ongoing in the state are the multimillion naira Port Harcourt Ring Road, a major project that will cut through six local governments, thereby easing movement of commerce and improving economic activities in the state. The Elelenwo and Bori internal roads, the Ogoni- Andoni-Opobo/ Nkoro Unity road, among several others.”

Gbara said Fubara’s administration, in partnership with a real estate developer, was embarking on the building of 20,000 housing units for low income earners.

He said: “Such a government that is delivering services for the people of Rivers State cannot be referred to as lacking in governance. Chief Okocha is only trying in futility to downplay or whittle down the excellent performance of the Fubara administration.

“The governor had proactively put measures in place to better the lives of Rivers people in the face of the current economic hardship and hunger experienced in the country,  which Rivers State Government is not responsible for.

“To boost food production, Sir Fubara had paid an inspection visit to the abandoned Songai farm in Tai Local Government, Buguma fish farm in Asalga Council, Garri processing factory in Oyigbo Local Government, with a view to revamping and putting them to use to ensure food sufficiency.

“Governor Fubara also revived Rivers State Micro Finance Agency, released N4billion to the agency as loans to Rivers people interested in pursuing micro, small and medium scale businesses.

“What about the payment of N100,000  to each civil servant, promotion of civil servants who were not promoted for eight years by the previous administration and other largesse to Rivers people during the Christmas celebration? Implementation of N30,000 minimum wage to local government workers, plus the ongoing employment into the Rivers State Civil Service.”

Gbara said the PDP was amazed that Okocha was angry at Rivers women for staging a protest to drum up support for the governor and express their displeasure about the needless antagonism towards Fubara’s administration by enemies of the state.

He said: “Okocha should be reminded that women protesting half-clad happens all over the world and is a recurring decimal in politics. In 2019, Okrika and Kalabari women protested half-clad to protect the votes of the former governor from being hijacked by the Army.

“What every responsible Rivers man and woman should be concerned about is the message the women came out to convey and how to address it. In the mist of these uncommon achievements by this administration within this period, only a politically blind and deaf person that has been bitten by the bug of ignorance and insensitivity will come out to criticise it.

“We advise the NNDC representative once again to concentrate on his job or to always cross check facts before coming out to embarrass himself in the media.
