Anti, pro-Fubara lawmakers hold counter sittings as Rivers crisis deepens

Security operatives on Tuesday, November 21, took over the entrance to the Rivers State House of Assembly complex providing a cover for the 25 lawmakers opposed to the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to hold their sitting.

It was gathered that the entire stretch of the popular Moscow Road leading to the facility was cordoned off with patrol vehicles including a police Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) stationed in strategic places on the road.

It was gathered that human and vehicular movements were not allowed on the road throughout the duration of the sitting of the lawmakers.

The lawmakers led by their speaker, Martin Amaewhule, were said to have successfully deliberated on two items including the suspension of the strike declared by the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN).

As part of their resolutions, the lawmakers asked the police to investigate the arson in the hallowed chamber and arrest and prosecute the arsonists.

It was gathered that immediately after the sitting, some senior police officers reportedly locked the entrance to the assembly complex and deployed more operatives to man the area.

Another report claimed that the lawmakers loyal to Fubara held their sitting in an undisclosed location in Port Harcourt.

The statement signed by one Ken Uchendu, an Assembly correspondent, said the lawmakers led by the factional speaker, Edison Ehie, passed a vote of confidence on Fubara as part of their resolutions.

They were said to have commended the governor for his developmental strides and security initiatives to keep Rivers peaceful.

They stressed that only a man of great vision and peace could steer the ship of development for the benefit of the people of the state

The lawmakers reportedly resolved to continuously give the governor the required support to accomplish his consolidation and continuity agenda for the benefit of the state.

They were said to have condemned the attack on Ehie’s residence and the burning of the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

While appealing to the governor to begin the rehabilitation of the chamber, the lawmakers called on the Inspector-General of police to investigate the arson and bring the culprits to book.

The development was said to have deepened the political crisis, which started in October with the impeachment notice sent to the governor by the Amaewhule-led lawmakers.

There were indications that all the moves to reconcile the gladiators in the crisis had failed especially as Ehie and the police disagreed on his claim that he escaped assassination.

Fubara, who yesterday received Disu at the Government House in Port Harcourt, advised him to deploy his experience to thoroughly and professionally fight crime in Rivers.

The governor said he was committed to working to maintain peace and advance the development of the state, adding that as a leader he would continue to work for all and not for any particular person.

He promised continual support of the state government to strengthen the capacity of the police to discharge their responsibility.

He assured the governor that he would devote his time to the task of ensuring peaceful atmosphere in Rivers State.

They want to assassinate me for supporting Fubara, says Rivers factional Speaker

There was furore in Rivers State on Monday following the alarm raised by the camp of Edison Ehie, the factional Speaker loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara that there was an assassination attempt  on him

Ehie later confirmed the attack alleging that security operatives and thugs led by one SP Irefeike London and DSP Masarachi, tried to break into his house in Port Harcourt with the motive of killing him and members of his family.

The factional Speaker said he had become a target for attack for standing with Governor Fubara and fighting against anti-democratic forces.

Narrating the incident, he said: “Yesterday at about 11pm, I had closed the engagement, I moved upstairs and we had put the children to bed and I was interacting with my wife when we got alerted by the security attached to me that there was an attempted invasion by men in mofty and some in uniform.

“I quickly got up from the room and came downstairs and not too long we started hearing the noise of the attempt by these security men in their Hilux vehicles to forcefully gain entrance into my residence but they were repelled by the security personnel.

“And to our greatest surprise, these security operatives led by one SP Irefeike London and DSP Masarachi ordered their men and they started shooting sporadically.

“In fact, you can confirm from the neighbours in this vicinity that nobody could sleep last night. But to the glory of God the security operative ably resisted them. And when my domestic staff went up and brought out his phone and started to shout that he was recording them they fled.

“Till now my family is in shock. My wife and my two little children are still in shock. It is so painful that people can go to that level. My children cannot go to school. They did not sleep last night because of the shock”.

Stating the motive for the attack, he said: “For whatsoever reason which of course we all know is connected to the political upheavals in the state they do not care about people’s family they now attack because obviously the plan was to forcefully enter into my residence, shoot and maybe kill everybody.

*But there is something about me which maybe their sponsor did not tell them. Everybody who knows me knows that I am dead to fear because I believe that the only thing you can kill is the flesh but you can not kill the spirit, nothing scares me.

“All these started after what happened on the 30th of October when some self-serving lawmakers, who are elected to represent their constituencies and ensure dividends of democracy, make laws including oversight functions, attempted in a Machievellian way impeach governor elected to represent millions of Rivers People. That is a joke taken too far, for goodness sake.

“And of course, the governor and chief security officer of the state getting wind of what happened at the Assembly complex went there to ascertain the level of damage and I went with him in his entourage and we all saw the humiliation by the police officers led by the DC Operations.

“We were teargassed in an attempt to intimidate us but we know that everyman dies but once. And if it is the prize we have to pay for democracy then let us pay it for the price for the future of our children.

“And since after that day because we stood behind the governor to say evil can not reign over good in Rivers State. I have come under attacks, threats, especially after I was elected Speaker of the 10th Rivers House of Assembly.

“I and my family have been under threats, false allegations have suddenly started springing up against me, and other of our supporters who are on the side and part if justice”.

Ehie said there was a plot to link him to insecurity in the state including the brutal killing of the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), SP Bako Angbasim, in charge of Ahoada-East, his local government areas.

But he said: “It is important to state that the kingdom and area where the killing of SP Bako Angbashim occurred is not my constituency.  I do not represent that constituency.

“There is another assembly member representing that constituency and there is a local government chairman who receives security votes. So you see that they are just going in vein to see how to connect some of us to say why have we not made attempts to intervene in the insecurity there.

“But it is on records that I made one of the first press release, I wrote a passionate letter to the commissioner of police which was acknowledged and we copied other sister agencies.

“They are just labouring in vein moving towards the left and right. And I ask them how come suddenly you now want to heap a lot of allegations on some of us. This has happened months ago, police have investigated, extracted necessary information, concluded investigation even charged the suspects to court.

“And those charged to court have been remanded in prison custody subject to the matter. This is because of our support. We have got information that they are trying to plant arms and ammunition at my house in the village. This is how desperate they are.

“But if I am asked whether I will support the governor again, I will say yes 100 pee cent. Evil can never reign over justice. I stand with the Governor of Rivers State, sir. Siminalayi Fubara, who was voted in by Rivers people. No threat, nothing, no allegation now or in future will deter my position”.

But the Commissioner of Police, CP. Olatunji Disu, said preliminary investigations revealed that there was no assassination attempt on Ehie, whom he identified as the leader.

The CP said: “The preliminary investigations we have done so far, this morning, have not revealed any assassination attempt, all I knew was that Police officers were on patrol, convoy patrol, It’s a routine thing and then we have made frantic efforts to get across to the leader to give us any information he has, so that we can include it in what we already have. So far so good, nothing to worry about.

“My plead to him and every other person is, if there is any complain, my number is going to be made public, they should call me quickly and I will quickly look into it. For now, I haven’t gotten anything like that”.

Wike, Fubara, Makinde woo foreign investors

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state, Simi Fubara, and his Oyo state counterpart, Seyi Makinde, on Friday, November 17, called on foreign investors to consider their domains when picking locations for setting up their companies in Nigeria.

The trio spoke in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital, during the opening of Hypercity 3, a chain store in Nigeria.

The minister said government alone cannot provide jobs for Nigeria’s teaming youths, unless the private sector steps in.

He promised to provide lands and a conducive environment for investors to thrive in the Territory and contribute to the development of the nation’s capital.

Wike said: “When I got the invitation, I pleaded with the management to move it to Friday so I can attend. When you approached me as governor, you promised to build this place.

“As a government, our duty is to provide a conducive environment. You promised to build four. Within one year, you’ve built three. You’ve provided employment for our people.

“It is not only government that can bring development. Let it not be only that it is only in Rivers State. Come to Abuja and build some there. We’ll provide lands.”

Governor Fubara on his part said: “It is now on record that when Hypercity 3 was commissioned, I was also part of it. Our desire when we came on board was to continue to uplift the development of the State based on consolidation.

“This is adding value to the economy of Rivers State. As a government, we will continue to give you security as all you need to succeed. This is because the government cannot do it alone. Private organisations need to join hands for the development of the state. The organisation should also expand to FCT and other places”.

In his appeal, Governor Makinde noted: “I’ve also told the MD of Hypercity that I will give him land free and tax holiday and I will also provide security for you. Oyo state is the gateway of the Southwestern part of Nigeria. This will also boost the economy of Oyo state.”

We won’t lower standard of projects in Rivers, says Fubara

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has promised that no situation will compel his administration to lower the standard of projects he inherited from his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking when he inspected work done at the Woji-Aleto-Refinery Road project, Sir Fubara said Rivers would continue to witness more projects.

“I can assure you and the world that no matter what the situation is, we are not going to lower the standard we have come to meet,” he said.

Fubara explained that the Woji-Aleto-Refinery road was inherited from the former administration, saying it was important to create an alternative route before the reconstruction of the East-West road.

The governor said the state government met its commitment to the contracting firm, Raffoul Construction Company and expected them to speed up work for early completion.

He said: “We had an understanding with the contractor and we did our own part of the commitment, so we are here to see what they are doing because we have given them a time line when the project should be completed.

“This is a follow up of one of the commitments we made to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu when we visited him about two months ago to thank him for all the good things he’s doing for us; appointment of our illustrious sons into very important positions. During that visit we promised him that in a way to help the Federal Government, we will create an alternative route to decongest the East West road.

“We inherited it and we promised that in line with our commitment of our mantra of consolidation and continuity, we must see that this road is completed.”

The governor expressed satisfaction about the state of work done and urged the contractors handling the project to ensure speedy delivery.

Wike remains my principal, Fubara declares

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara yesterday said his predecessor and Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) remains his principal despite the recent political crisis that rocked the state.

The governor noted that at no time during the crisis did he recruit anybody to malign Wike.

He urged Rivers people to put the impasse behind them and pursue peace.

Fubara spoke at the opening of the 2023/2024 legal year rededication church service held at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt.

He said: “We have a mission to give you development. We also know that the devil will always come in, one way or the other, but the important thing is for us to identify it and push the devil out of our road so that we can continue.

“Thank you for your support. We need peace to progress, and that is only possible in the atmosphere of tranquillity.”

At the opening of the 2023/2024 Legal Year, Fubara lauded Wike’s performance in the judicial sector but said more still needed to be done.

He said: “Over the last eight years, the immediate-past Governor Wike gave attention to the judiciary in the scheme of things and achieved so much to build and reposition the state’s judicial system for effective judicial services and justice delivery.

“The new courthouse complexes, for both state and federal courts, the automated filing system, and the improved working conditions, including the provision of vehicles and accommodations for judicial officers, constitute significant measures from the government towards achieving judicial effectiveness and efficiency in our State.

“However, while we can all see and feel the improvements and resultant impact of these improvements on justice delivery, we must also admit that our judiciary has not yet reached the point of self-actualisation.

“There is still work to be done by all stakeholders since access to effective justice delivery is a shared and collective responsibility.”

Fubara believes that the rule of law and justice were deeply rooted in moral ethics and values for the creation of a just, secure, and egalitarian society.

He said: “I wish to reiterate that my interest in the rule of law, judicial independence and effective justice in Rivers State is profound and heartfelt.

“I know that the judiciary and justice delivery system in Rivers is still a work in progress.

“We have come a long way when compared with most other states of the federation in terms of institutional infrastructure, strength, capacity and competence.”

The Governor noted that at no time during the crisis did he recruit anybody to malign his principal and urged Rivers people to put the impasse behind them insisting that his administration was focused on peace and development of the state.

Fubara, who spoke at the opening of 2023/2024 legal year rededication church service at St. Cyprian’s Anglican Church in Port Harcourt on Thursday, said it was important for Rivers people to embrace the peace to allow planned development to take place in the state.

He said: “We have a mission to give you development. We also know that the devil will always come in, one way or the other, but the important thing is for us to identify it and push the devil out of our road so that we can continue.

Also speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2023/2024 Legal Year,  Fubara lauded the performance of Wike at the judicial sector but said more still had to be done to take the sector to the realm of self-actualisation.

He said: “Over the last eight years, the immediate past Governor, His Excellency Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, and now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory gave  attention to  the judiciary in the scheme of things and  achieved so much to  build and reposition the State’s judicial system for effective judicial services and justice delivery.

Rivers crisis: Fubara meets Wike, says ‘My Oga remains my oga’

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, stated on Thursday, November 9, that his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike continues to be his principal.

He said this during the rededication ceremony for the Rivers State Judiciary’s 2023–2024 legal year, which Wike also attended.

The state capital’s Saint Cyprian’s Anglican Church on Hospital Road served as the venue for the occasion.

The Rivers state governor called for peace in the oil-rich state once more and said that the current political turmoil in the state was history.

Rivers state can, according to Fubara, if the players and those who support them behave peacefully.

He said: “My oga remains my oga. Whatever that has happened is in the past. I have not sent anybody to malign anybody.”

In addition, the governor issued a warning to those endorsing him to refrain from disparaging his opponents by using foul language, stating that he had given them no permission to do so.

According to him, in trying to attain development, the devil will always attack, but what is most important is to “identify the devil and push it out.”

It was the first time the two politicians who were the major characters in the most recent political controversy would cross paths in the state’s public eye.

Arriving at the church service nearly at the conclusion, Wike, the minister for the Federal Capital Territory, shook hands with his successor and sat in the same row as him for the duration of the ceremony.

  • The sins of Sim

    The sins of Sim

Sim Fubara has apologized, but how far will that go? The question of the row between son and godfather is less about what pundits and the streets have advanced. It is essentially a breach of sonship. Nyesom Wike is glum about a betrayal of a son. He believes the fellow was trustworthy. The son looked the other way and brought enemies into the house. The same man who said he was poisoned cannot but be wary about the enemy. Maybe hence he has been Nigeria’s executive chef.

He thought Fubara was the good son.

But Fubara is a sort of enigma. Before he was anointed governor, he was in an EFCC furore. He was out of public glare. Some said he was in hiding. What happened to that? Wike brought him under his arm like a mother hen.

But then he appeared beside his mentor.  The man never smiled nor frowned in public. His big, bold eyes looked as though unseeing. He must have the most mysterious mien in public office, next to the almost Mona Lisa smile of Gbenga Daniel. Fubara brings to mind Shakespeare’s characterization of Cassius, who never smiled and reads too much. I am not sure of Fubara as a book worm or music lover. But many in Wike’s camp must think him dangerous as Shakespeare called Cassius. During music performances, he never tossed his head in rhythm nor even appreciated with a blink.

But suddenly, he could shout. He could emote. His eyes ran in a million directions. He floated on a mosh pit and stood on a podium aluta-style. At once, he turned a student union leader, a rabble rouser, a begger and a defiant. This same man. That is where there was a breach of sonship. Power happened to Fubara.

The other point was Wike’s structure. It was that same structure that he mobilised against Atiku, and for Tinubu. The same structure was a behemoth against his rivals in the state. The structure that made mincemeat of Atiku, who  in his near tearful press conference was making his last hurrah. Atiku is like Hobbes describes some ambitious men with ” a desire for power after power that ceaseth only in death.”  Fubara brought the enemy to the door. That compromises not only Wike’s pride but his future. Of what benefit is Wike to the president if he has no base in Rivers State? He knows somebody it has happened to. He does not want that fate on himself. That is essentially where the breach of sonship is. The father gave the kingdom to son, and son sat at dinner with Beelzebub. Was it naivety on the part of Fubara? Was he being nice, or was he scheming? Whatever the story, he has pissed in their common pond. Can both of them ever swim in it?
