    I sought therapy after online mockery – Funke Akindele

    Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has opened up about how online mockery affected her mental health.

    She revealed that she began seeing a therapist after some netizens mocked her for not having a husband during her 2023 political campaign.

    Akindele shared her experience on the Chude Live Conversation Show, stating that the hurtful comments made her cry, but ultimately motivated her to work harder and achieve success.

    She emphasised the importance of speaking up and seeking help when needed, advising others to do the same.

    Akindele credited therapy with helping her process her emotions and gain strength to face life’s challenges.

    Akindele said, “There was a video on social media that some women mocked me that I don’t have a husband.

    “I cried, cried, and cried. I just told myself, you need to speak to someone about this. You can’t continue like this.

    “I told myself that I needed to speak, I reached out, and I started speaking. After then, I felt better. Things I couldn’t tell people out there. I spoke to my therapist and I was better.

    “So, I want to advise you out there. It’s very important for you to speak up. You need it. You can’t take everything. I’m a very strong person now. I have that strength to face any challenges in life”.

    The press conference was hosted ahead of the first-ever live edition of the WithChude interview series, and was attended   Jennifer Mairo, Chief Operating Officer of Joy Inc., Alhaja Detoro, founder of The Stacked Company, and Brukeme Dickson, Chief Operating Officer of Red Media Africa. Each speaker shared movi ng reflections on the purpose behind With Chude Live!

    Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has revealed that she almost lost her life after her mother’s passing in 2023.

    In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, she revealed that suppressing her grief worsened her situation.

    Funke explained that she’s not one to mourn openly, often trying to quickly move past difficult situations, but this approach ultimately took a toll on her.

    The actress described how her mother’s death, combined with her marriage breakdown and loss in the Lagos State gubernatorial election, left her heart aching.

    She felt overwhelmed, especially as a single parent struggling to cope with her new reality.

    Funke eventually broke down on social media, expressing her frustrations and sadness in a live video.

    She said, “I do not like to mourn. I remember when my mom passed on, I just wanted to get out of it quickly. I like to get out of situations quickly. I do not allow myself to break down, and it affected me after my mom’s death. And I almost died.

    “My heart was aching and something happened online. For the first time I took my phone, I went live on social media and I’m like, you all should leave me alone. Do I know this person? No, this person came to act in my movie, got paid, and left. Why are you accusing me of something I didn’t do wrong?

    “Do you know what I’m going through? I lost my mum, my marriage fell apart, I lost in politics, I have to get back to work, I have to earn a living. I have children I’m raising alone and you are stressing me. So, for the first time, I cried. I broke down for weeks.”

    Actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele joined the Flashback Friday trend by sharing nostalgic photos on Instagram, featuring throwback moments with fellow actresses Doris Simon and Empress Njamah.

    “Hmmm. Don’t swipe!! If you do, then tag them!!”, she wrote.

    The post came after Ijoba Lande’s recent accusation regarding Funke’s payment to him, which he has since apologised for and clarified was taken out of context.

    Prior to the apology, he said: “When I got there, someone who introduced self as Wendy brought a document, and I was asked to sign. After reading, I saw that every month, I would be collecting 90,000, and I was already there. It is good to be educated. Had it been I am properly educated, I wouldn’t have signed it. At first, I thought it was nothing until the month ended and they paid me 90,000 for a whole month.”

    However, while retracting his statement, Lande said in part: “Please help me beg aunty funke. That was not how I made the video. I didn’t do the video to tarnish your image. Aunty funke you didn’t do any wickedness. Those of you that cut video half way you aren’t good and you are wicked”.

    While expressing her gratitude to God for her success, Akindele emphasized the pivotal role D’banj played in shaping her trajectory in the entertainment industry.

    Recounting her experiences, Akindele noted that her journey began with dedication and hard work, culminating in the release of her breakthrough project, “Jenifa,” in 2009, which she described as a turning point for her career. 

    During this period, the actress was approached by a club owner to host her at an event, where she first met D’banj.

    In their conversation, Akindele said D’banj recognized the potential of the “Jenifa” brand and advised her against moving on too quickly to new projects.

    She recounted the turning point in her career, which came with the release of her breakthrough film Jenifa in 2009.

    She also acknowledged the support of singer D’banj, who encouraged her to expand the Jenifa brand and provided financial assistance to help her continue writing.
