Gambo keen to make Pillars return

Kano Pillars captain Gambo Mohammed is confident that he could make his return to the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this Sunday when his team play hosts to Lobi Stars.

“I feel better now and I have trained too in recent weeks. I feel I am ready to play again but that will depend on the coaches and the doctor now. I want to play this weekend but there is no rush about it but like I said if I am called upon I am ready,” said Gambo to supersport.com.

In the midst of his wait for his first league appearance since early March, Gambo is concerned with Pillars’ recent poor run. The Kano club have won just twice in the 10 matches in which the striker has been sidelined.

“We have not had the best times in recent games, and we all know that. These things happen in football but I believe that the team will do well in the coming games,” he said.

  • Gambo shoots down Rivers Utd

Gambo Mohammed’s close range finish was all Kano Pillars required to defeat Rivers United 1-0 in a matchday 32 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) game decided on Sunday in Kano.

The veteran attacker swept home Adamu Mohammed’s low cross from the right in the 23rd minute after Rabiu Ali initiated the attacking move with an incisive pass.

The big news before kick off was the decision of the Rivers United technical manager, Stanley Eguma to drop Sunday Rotimi, Bernard Ovoke and Guy Keumian from the starting line-up.

Gambo had come close to scoring moments earlier when he swivelled in the box only to watch in frustration as his deflected strike off Markson Ojobo’s outstretched leg clattered against the cross bar.

Rivers United had their moments in the first half too, most notably in the 43rd minute when Idris Aloma’s well-struck volley flew narrowly wide with the Kano Pillars goalkeeper, David Obiazo beaten.

Frederick Obomate’s smartly-taken volley earlier in the half threatened to see the visitors make their mark in hot and humid conditions at the Sani Abacha Stadium.

Gambo resumes training with Kano Pillars

Gambo Mohammed has resumed training with Kano Pillars after his botched transfer move to Vietnam.

The club’s media officer, Idris Malikawa revealed that the lanky striker has put behind him his transfer disappointment and ready to move on with his career.

Gambo returned to Kano after he dramatically turned back from Istanbul, Turkey, on his way to Vietnam in respect of signing for a club there. He was turned back by the Turkish immigration officials after his failure to get Vietnam visa.

Mohammed and his UK-based agent, Eddie Nwafor had a disagreement over the move.

Nwafor claimed that the player refused to continue his trip to Vietnam despite a further clarification about his entry visa to Vietnam in Turkey but Gambo said he didn’t abandon the trip, stressing that his agent failed to arrange the trip properly.

Malikawa said the club’s leading goals king was on target during Sai Masu Gida’s 5-0 whitewashed of a local club Sky Limit in one of the team’s warm-up matches before the league kick-off.

“He was part of the training this week and there is no sign that he is worried about the transfer imbroglio. He is responding well to the training and he is relating well with his colleagues. • BOTCHED FOREIGN TRANSFER:I saw hell in Istanbul, says Gambo

BOTCHED FOREIGN TRANSFER:I saw hell in Istanbul, says Gambo

Kano Pillars forward, Gambo Mohammed has exclusively revealed to SportingLife the ordeal he went through over his recent botched trip to Vietnam.

Mohammed, who left the shores of the country on January 1, returned to Kano on Monday after he dramatically turned back from Istanbul, Turkey, on his way to Vietnam in respect of signing for a club there.

SportingLife understands that Gambo’s UK-based agent, Eddie Nwafor was in charge of the trip.

A media report quoted Nwafor as saying that the player refused to continue his trip to Vietnam despite a further clarification about his entry visa to Vietnam in Turkey.

But Gambo disclosed to SportingLife that he didn’t abandon the trip, stressing that his agent failed to arrange the trip properly.

“How did I abandon the trip? They did not give me Vietnam Visa. I stayed at least four days at the Istanbul airport and I came back to Nigeria on Monday. I am now in Kano,” Gambo said to SportingLife.

“When I entered Turkey and I finished everything there, they didn’t give me a boarding pass to proceed to Vietnam. The immigration officers at the Istanbul airport insisted that I won’t leave the airport without  a visa. And without Vietnam visa how can I leave Istanbul?” Gambo asked.

“There was no Vietnam visa before I left Nigeria. It was only an invitation letter and not visa. They told me that I will collect the visa at the point of entry in Vietnam after paying $30 but Turkish officials insisted I won’t leave the country until I get a Vietnam visa. So what do I do,  continue sleeping at the Istanbul airport?”

The Kano Pillars leading goal scorer also confirmed that the deal was brokered between his club and the agent, adding that he decided to make the trip because of the involvement of a former club player, Ahmed Garba aka ‘Yaro Yaro’.

“The deal was brokered between Kano Pillars and the agent.  I was not involved. The agent was a former manager of Ahmed Yaro Yaro that was why I believe everything about the deal. I travelled on January 1st and I came back on January 4.”

Gambo also said he lost his bag during the trip.

“Now I have lost all my kits. I have five boots inside my bag. I have everything inside the bag including my cloths. I lost my bag at the Istanbul airport. It was a big bag and I can’t find it again.

“I visited Turkish airline office here in Nigeria and I complained to them. They gave me a form to fill and they told me they will communicate to me later.”

This would be the second time the agent has been involved in a botched foreign transfer involving Gambo.

“What happened last time was different from what happened now. This time around, they told me they have secured everything that will make the trip easy for me only to still discover that everything was in shambles,” Gambo said.

    Gambo returns against Nasarawa

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions, Kano Pillars will unleash prolific striker, Mohammed Gambo on Nasarawa United in today’s match day 25 clash at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

This will mark the end of the awaited return to league action for the Nigerian international who sustained gun wounds in the March 03 armed robbery attack on the side on their way to honour a league match at Heartland in Owerri.

Kano Pillars head coach, Mohammed Baba Ganaru said the return of their lethal marksman, Gambo to competitive league action is the high point of the weekend clash and not specifically on playing former side, Nasarawa United.

“The breaking news and high point of Sunday’s league clash is the return to league action of our striker, Mohammed Gambo and not the unnecessarily hyped match-up against former side, Nasarawa United.

“Gambo will be playing his first league game tomorrow (Sunday) against Nasarawa United after the armed robbery attack. He is 100% fit for the rigour and stress expected in a high profile league match and that’s our greatest joy at the moment.

“That’s what is occupying our attention and not tomorrow’s (Sunday) opponents, Nasarawa United. Of course, there is nothing special in playing my former side, we have all live on so I don’t see the clash against Nasarawa United as anything special.

“It’s simply about the whole three points at stake, we want the three points and have done our homework perfectly well to earn the three points,” said Ganaru to supersport.com.

The Pyramid City side are fifth on the 20-team top flight log on 37 points eight points behind league leaders, Enyimba.
