    Gambo kicks against emergency rule

The National Conference Committee on National Security has kicked against the extension of emergency in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

Charman of the Committee and a former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alhaji Gambo Jimeta, said to extend the emergency rule is undesirable.

The Committee, while concluding its work yesterday, also recommended a decentralised police, community policing, removal of immunity clause and the establishment of a military border security organisation among others.

Jimeta said the emergency has outlived its usefulness.

He said: “A reporter asked me yesterday why did Chief Awolowo’s Western government was put under emergency? Why did Obasanjo declare emergency in Plateau?

“These are circumstances that happened. In the case of the Western region, I was alive and I knew what happened. There was a total breakdown of law and order. People were being burnt in their cars, houses and so on, but it was necessary for the Federal Government to step in and stop that and it did not last more than necessary.

“In this case, we have been under emergency rule for how long now? One year in three states affected, and there is no improvement. So, we have to now review the whole thing, re-assess the whole thing. There is something more than just declaring emergency rule.

“If you declare an emergency rule in such disturbed states, you should have enough resources to revamp the architecture of security in those states immediately and for a long time to come while you also bring the other states into consideration so that this thing didn’t happen again.”

Another member of the Committee and Leader of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC), Gani Adam,  said the Committee okayed decentralisation of police.

“We agreed on the decentralisation of police to the extent that the police from the ranks of Private to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP)  should be posted to their home state. Officer of the ranks above DSP can be posted anywhere in the country.”

  • Muazu, Umar, Gambo, Adamu, Waziri in the race for party chair

Muazu, Umar, Gambo, Adamu, Waziri in the race for party chair

Six names are on the cards as the battle to succeed Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who quit as Peoples democratic Party (PDP) chairman yesterday , hots up.

The President’s men, it was gathered last night, are tinkering with the list, to pick the most ‘politically’ eligible of the lot.

They are the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar(Gombe State); former Governor Adamu Muazu (Bauchi), a former member of the House of Representatives, Mohammed Wakil (Borno), former National Chairman of the Grassroots Democratic Movement(GDM) Alhaji Gambo Lawan(Borno); former Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) President Ambassador Hassan Adamu(Wakilin Adamawa) from Adamawa State and former Minister of Commerce Ambassador Idris Waziri(Taraba).

Three groups, it was learnt, have emerged on the search for Tukur’s successor.

They are the President’s Strategy Team (PST) being coordinated by Governor Henry Seriake Dickson; a group being led by the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan and the Board of Trustee (BoT) leaders/ PDP Governors Forum headed by Akwa Ibom State Governor Godswill Akpabio.

The groups have not been able to reach a consensus on the choice of national chairman, a decision which PDP’s National Executive Committee(NEC) has deferred till Monday.

It was learnt that the Dickson-led PST met yesterday for hours to consider which of the candidates will be most suited for the job.

The PST, it was gathered, has drawn up seven criteria, which are hinged on the prospective chairman’s ability to deliver the party’s ticket to President Jonathan.

    The criteria are:

•Being a committed democrat and team player

•Rich experience in politics and party administration

•Ability to reconcile aggrieved members of the party

•Readiness to reorder PDP for electoral victory in 2015 in at least 25 to 28 states

•A good listener who will have respect for all organs of the party

•Must be a political asset and not a liability to PDP

•A candidate who will ensure free and fair primaries

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The search for a new chairman actually started on Wednesday morning when Tukur’s exit became inevitable. I can tell you that we have six candidates so far but the list is inexhaustible due to ongoing permutations.

“With Tukur in charge, the President’s strategists had taken the second term ticket of Jonathan for granted. But his exit has left this flank open and it has become important to be strategic before the new National Chairman is hijacked by vested interests.

“This is why Governor Seriake Dickson is leading the strategy team to ensure that all is tactically okay for the President. The team is very strong on Mohammed Wakil.

“ The First Lady and some National Executive Committee (NEC) members are, however, working on Idris Umar because he is less controversial out of the six.

“For instance, the choice of Muazu will upset Governor Isa Yuguda and some stakeholders in Bauchi. And there is no point creating crisis in any state again. There is still a cold war between Yuguda and Muazu.

“The strategists of the President are uncomfortable with Muazu, who is an in-law to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. It is like handing over the party to Atiku. They cannot take such a risk.

“As for Mohammed Wakil, apart from being a former member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003, he has no solid political base because Borno belongs to the opposition. He has limited political clout to win mileage for PDP in 2015.

“The strategists believe that a PDP National Chairman must have a strong political base. Although Wakil is loved by Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State( a loyalist of the President), some PDP leaders said the choice of PDP National Chairman must not be personalised.

“Regarding the Minister, he is rated as a loyal and contented party man. He was the anointed governorship candidate of the party for Gombe State in 2011 but he was denied the ticket at the last minute. Yet, he accepted his fate and worked with Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo.

“His sincerity, patience and political maturity earned him a ministerial slot. The thinking of the First Lady and some PDP leaders is that he can succeed Tukur.

“The Minister’s only challenge was his pro-Jonathan 2015 project which landed him in trouble recently when he bought many cars running into millions of naira. There had been pressure on the Minister to account for the fortunes he is spending on the campaign in Gombe State.

“It is left to NEC to decide who to pick among the six. Horse-trading will continue throughout the weekend.”

Some BoT members, it was learnt, are pushing for Gambo Lawan, Ambassador Hassan Adamu, and ex-Minister Idris Waziri who was present at the 80th birthday celebration of BoT Chairman Chief Tony Anenih for what a source described as “essentially tactical.”

Another source added: “The position of some BoT members is that Lawan and Adamu had been tested as administrators either in politics or public office. Lawan was also one of those who contested against Tukur. Adamu’s setback may be his old age and strict disciplinary culture which may not be acceptable to the hawks in PDP.

“Ex-Minister Idris Waziri is rated as brilliant, intelligent and a peace-building figure. The fears about him have to do with the fact that he served under ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who has mutual respect for him.”

A member of the NWC, who played a key role in the ouster of Tukur, said: “By Sunday, we will know who will be the next National Chairman of the party. It is too early for me to tell you now because consultations and horse-trading are ongoing.

“We are looking at all the candidates that have been thrown up by the North-East. We will screen all of them thoroughly to avoid any slip this time around”.

Super Eagles handlers have dropped injured Gambo Mohammed and Yinka Adedeji from the 2014 CHAN in South Africa.

MTNFootball.com gathered that both players have since left the Eagles training camp.

The highly-rated Pillars star Gambo, who featured for Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil, has been nursing a hamstring injury, which has kept him by the sidelines since the Eagles resumed training for CHAN earlier this month.

Adedeji also suffered a hamstring injury at the weekend.

Golden Eaglets goalkeeper Dele Alampasu is also set to be in South Africa as third-choice goalkeeper after FC Taraba goalkeeper Ibrahim Pius was axed, but his Eaglet teammate Taiwo Awoniyi did not make the final cut.

Also dropped was new Enyimba signing Mfom Udoh, who was a late call-up to the Eagles after his goals for Akwa United last season.

Nigeria plays Mali on January 11 in Cape Town.

  • Gambo targets CHAN success for World Cup place

Gambo targets CHAN success for World Cup place

Super Eagles and Kano Pillars forward, Gambo Muhammed has told SportingLife that he will work very hard to make the African Nations Championship (CHAN) final list so he can prove to Super Eagles Chief Coach Stephen Keshi that he merits an inclusion in the 2014 World Cup squad.

“As you can see nobody is sure of making the team yet until the Chief Coach names his squad. So I am working very hard to make the CHAN final squad and from there anything can happen.

“I love football. It is my life and profession. I love scoring goals too because it makes me and everybody happy. That is why I am working very hard at training. I know I have the talent to score goals and that is what I will do, I mean score goals here in training and in CHAN Insha Allah (by God’s grace) if I am picked for the competition.

“If I make the CHAN team I will work hard to help my country achieve success in the competition so that I can have the opportunity of breaking into the Super Eagles’ World Cup squad,” Mohammed told SportingLife yesterday.

The gangling striker has the talent to be a potent attacker but has not proved his abilities to the maximum since he joined the Eagles. There is, however, no doubt about his talent as a striker since has proved it times without number with Kano Pillars.

    Gambo waves aside CHAN opponents

Nigeria striker, Gambo Mohammed, is brimming with confidence that their 2014 CHAN group stage opponents will not stop them from reaching the quarterfinals.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles were drawn in Group A alongside hosts South Africa, Mozambique and Mali for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Wednesday.

But Kano Pillars forward, Gambo, believes that the Super Eagles will make it into the last eight despite being their first appearance at the CHAN.

“Did you say South Africa, Mozambique and Mali are in our group? That’s good because we have landed in the quarter-finals,” remarked Gambo in a confident tone to supersport.com on Wednesday night after his club lost 0-1 at Nembe City in a Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The Super Eagles striker quickly pointed out that “we have a good team”. He also made it clear that his comment is no disrespect to their group foes.

“I know we have a good team and that’s why I said we will reach the quarter-finals. I’m not disrespecting South Africa, Mozambique or Mali. But I know we play with our hearts and with a do-or-die attitude,” said the striker.

On the exit of Godfrey Oboabona and Gomo Onduku to European clubs which makes them ineligible for the CHAN, Gambo said Nigeria can find ready-made replacements for the duo though he acknowledged they will be missed.

“Nigeria have got enough talented players in our league to select from. I know the coach will handle that well because he has been very good and knows the players in the league.

“We will miss the two of them to be honest, but I know anyone called up to take their places can play even better because coach Stephen Keshi knows how to bring out the best in any player,” stated the former Buffalo FC man.

    GAMBO SECURES VICTORY FOR PILLARS

SUPER EAGLES striker Gambo Mohammed was the hero on the night as his lone strike earned Kano Pillars a slim 1-0 win over Sharks.

The week 27 Glo Nigerian Premier League game saw the host Pillars sweat hard to pick all three points up for grabs.

Sharks forced the NPL defending champions to a goalless first half with attempts on goal coming more from the hosts.

But striker Gambo Mohammed broke Sharks resistance, thanks to an Adamu Murtala assist.

Pillars now have 45 points from 26 games, with a game in hand against Akwa United.

    Orlando Pirates, Celtics chase Gambo

KANO Pillars striker, Gambo Mohammed is wanted in South Africa.

SportingLife gathered from a source in the Rainbow Nation, Mashudu Mundalamo that the highly rated Home-Based ace is been linked to both PLS champions, Orlando Pirates and Bloemfotein Celtic.

Meanwhile, a call put through to Pillars spokesperson, Idris Malikawa informed that the Kano based team are yet to be contacted on the new development.

Malikawa said on telephone: “I don’t have any report on Gambo’s transfer for now, but as soon as his agent or representatives of the South African clubs write to us on their interest in him, then I would be in the best position to talk on the matter.”

SPAIN MISS:Don’t crucify me, says Gambo

    Reveals massive abuse over blunder

Nigeria striker Gambo Mohammed does not understand the amount of criticism he has had to deal with following his missed chance against Spain at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The Kano Pillars attacker, on as a substitute for Werder Bremen’s Joseph Akpala, came face to face with Victor Valdez in the 74th minute of the encounter on June 23 and shot wide when it seemed easier to score.

The 25-year-old has now revealed the enormous amounts of abuse he has had to deal with following that incident against the La Furia Roja.

“People have called me up on the phone and stopped me in the streets to criticise me for missing that chance against Spain. I am not happy and I think they should leave me alone,” Gambo told supersport.com.

He added that more stellar names have failed to put away better goal scoring opportunities but reckons they have not had to deal with the backlash he’s faced following Nigeria’s ouster from the competition.

“It happens in football. Any player can miss chances. (Players like Lionel) Messi and (Cristiano) Ronaldo have missed even better chances than mine and nothing happened, so these things happen.

“The coach (Stephen Keshi) did not criticise me. My teammates too, so that gave me confidence.

“I have put that incident behind me and have resolved to do my best for my country in subsequent matches,” he said.

Gambo is currently in Abuja with the rest of the Nigeria team preparing for Saturday’s 2014 CHAN qualifier against the Ivory Coast in Kaduna but the forward is in the dark over their West African neighbours.

“I don’t know anything about them (Ivory Coast) but I am sure we will beat them on Saturday,” he said.

Gambo has scored over 90 goals in more than 150 appearances for Kano Pillars since joining the club in 2006.

His outing against Spain at the Confederations Cup remains his only senior international cap.

  • Gambo Mohammed to join Sand Eagles

Kano Pillars’ marksman, Gambo Mohammed, is expected to be named in the Nigerian beach soccer team, the Super Sand Eagles.

Head coach of the Sand Eagles, Audu Adamu Ejor, disclosed to supersport.com that Mohammed is the latest player he has considered to add to his team.

“We will soon start camping and I have drawn up some names that will be joining the team’s camp. Certainly there will be new players among those I am going to call up. One of them is Gambo Mohammed.

“I’ve watched him and I believe that he will be a very good addition to the team as we prepare for coming tournaments,” said Ejor.

“He has the qualities to fit into the sport of beach soccer and that’s why I have decided to call up into the team.”

Mohammed finished last season as the second leading scorer in the 2011/2012 Nigeria Premier League (NPL) with 15 goals.

The Sand Eagles are expected to start camping in Lagos in October as they prepare to defend their Copa Lagos title this December.

Ejor said he is looking forward to leading out his team in the Copa Lagos title defence.

“Winning the tournament last year was a big boost for my team and the sport. All we can do now is look forward to the tournament and hopefully we can win it again,” said the Nigerian coach.
