Current sacrifices, steady steps to greatness, says Ganduje

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has assured the current sacrifices by Nigerians are steady steps to making the country great again.

This assurance was contained in his goodwill message to Muslim Umma in marking this year’s Eid al-Adha celebrations.

Extending his warmest congratulations to the Muslim faithful in the country in a statement on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, the APC Chairman said the Eid al-Adha – “Festival of Sacrifice” is a celebration of faith, obedience and devotion.

Olofu in the statement quoted his principal to have described the festival as a day to commemorate the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son Ismail (Ishmael) as an act of obedience to Allah’s command.

He said: “As we mark this significant event in the Islamic calendar, Nigerians should acknowledge the values of sacrifice, compassion, generosity that are embodied in the spirit of Eid al-Adha.

“We recognise the importance of this occasion in promoting unity, love, and harmony among all Nigerians, regardless of their religious beliefs or backgrounds, and these lessons should bring us closer together in our march to attain nationhood.”

According to him: “As we celebrate Eid al-Adha, we should also remember those who are less fortunate and those affected by the current challenges in our country by extending love in solidarity and support for one another.”

He also enjoined Nigerians to reflect on the lesson of the festival by sustaining its values and principles in support of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration in his steady steps to make Nigeria great.

Suit seeking Ganduje’s removal as APC national chair June 26 for hearing

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ruled that it will hear on June 26 the suit seeking to sack the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, along with the objection raised against the competence of the suit.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the ruling following the request by lawyer to the plaintiff, the North Central APC Forum, Benjamin Davou, to be allowed time to reply to the responses filed by Ganduje.

In the suit, the forum, led by Saleh Zazzaga, is querying the propriety of Ganduje’s appointment as the national chairman of the APC when he is not from the Northcentral.

The defendants in the case are: Ganduje, the APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

At the mention of the case yesterday, Davou said although the suit was slated for hearing, it would not be possible because Ganduje’s lawyer, Raymond Asikeni, just served him the notice of preliminary objection and counter-affidavit filed by the first defendant.

Davou promised to file his reply first thing next Wednesday, after the public holiday, to the two sets of documents that Ganduje filed.

Justice Ekwo adjourned till June 26 for hearing, saying: “On the date of hearing, the preliminary objection will be taken together with the substantive suit.”

The judge added: “The processes of any party that is absent from court shall be deemed as adopted.”

The plaintiff, in the main suit, prayed the court to, among others, restrain Ganduje from further parading himself as the national chairman of the APC.

It also prayed the court to issue an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to accord recognition to all actions taken by the APC, including congresses, primaries, and nominations, since Ganduje became the APC national chairman on August 3, last year.

The plaintiff contended, among others, that Ganduje is occupying the office of the APC national chairman illegally, not being from a state in the Northcentral.

The plaintiff argued that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC breached the party’s constitution when it appointed Ganduje, from Kano State in the Northwest, to replace Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State in the Northcentral.

It also argued that Ganduje’s appointment to replace Abdullahi was contrary to Article 31.5(1) f of the APC constitution and ultra vires the powers of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

Political appointments to be determined by member’s electronic registration – Ganduje

Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, says membership electronic registration will henceforth, serve as a basis of reference for political appointments at any level in the party.

Ganduje said this while declaring open the party’s E-membership registration train-the-trainer workshop on Wednesday in Abuja.

He also said that evidence of electronic membership registration would  determine if a member could contest any political position on the party’s platform.

He added that Nigerians willing to officially register as members of APC were expected to provide their biometric data, which must tally with the details captured in their National Identity Number (NIN).

“Today, we are gathered here by the grace of GOD in fulfillment and accomplishment of our promise to start the process of digitalising the membership of our party.

“This is an attempt to have graphic idea of the total members of our party, their geographical spread and demographic divisions.

“This process will not only drive the planning, decision-making and projection process.

“But will serve as basis of reference for any member of our party seeking appointment at any level or desiring to contest an election,” Ganduje said.

He said the APP and portal on which the prospective trainees from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja were expected to use would soon be reactivated.

This, he said, was to enable existing and new members to register online as members of the party from any part of the world.

“Each person is expected to provide his or her biometric data which must tally with the details captured in the NIN.

“By so doing, any member whose name appears on the digital register shall be deemed to be true and faithful members of our great party,” the APC national chairman explained.

He appealed to the Ministers Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy and that of Science and Technology who were stakeholders on the project to provide the party with technical assistance to enable it achieve its objectives.

He appealed to the trainees to ensure they learnt from the programme so they could go back to their respective states and impart knowledge to those who would be engaged in the exercise.

“I must say this exercise is very important and dear to us, therefore we must strive to succeed,” Ganduje said, adding that the resource persons and consultants were carefully selected for the exercise.

According to him, the resource persons and consultants are prominent personalities who have the ability and capacity to provide theoretical and technological knowledge for the exercise.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of the APC to set new standards and benchmarks in the nation’s democratic sphere and ensure the sustenance and continuation of its government at all levels.

Ganduje particularly thanked Mr Emma Eneukwu, Chairman of the APC E-Membership Registration Committee and his members for putting the programme together to foster the party’s technological advancement.

Dr Bosun Tijjani, Minister of Communications, Innovations and Digital Economy in his remarks, appreciated Ganduje for coming up with the initiative, noting that it portrayed the APC as truly progressives and forward thinking political party.

Also speaking, Dr Uche Nnaji, Minister of Science and Technology, said with the initiative, the APC was setting a new standard for political participation in the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that Ganduje on assumption of office on Aug. 5, 2023 as APC National Chairman, promised to initiate new programmes and policies for the party’s development.

He said his desire was to further strengthen the APC and enhance its status as a truly grassroots progressives political party.

He specifically promised to revive the party’s offices at the ward, local government and state levels to ensure its functionality throughout the year without necessarily waiting until during campaigns or elections.

He also promised to establish the Progressives Institute to facilitate training of party members, promote the ideal of good governance and institutionalise progressive ideology.

APC chairmanship: Court to hear suit against Ganduje June 13

…orders parties to file all relevant papers

A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled a hearing for June 13 in the suit seeking to sack the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje.

Justice Inyang Ekwo fixed the date on Thursday, May 30, when it was realised that all parties in the case had not filed all required documents for the hearing of the case.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/599/2024 was filed by a group – the North Central APC Forum – led by Saleh Zazzaga.

At the mention of the case on Thursday, the lawyer to the plaintiff, Ayuba Abdul, said the business of the court for the day was the hearing of the plaintiff’s motion ex-parte for substituted service of the originating processes on Ganduje (1st defendant).

Abdul said he was surprised to see Ganduje’s lawyer in court even when he had not yet properly served with the court documents.

He said all efforts made by the court’s bailiff to serve the APC Chairman were unsuccessful.

Justice Ekwo then asked Ganduje’s lawyer, Sunusi Musa (SAN) if he was ready to receive the documents on behalf of his client.

Sunusi agreed to accept the documents on behalf of his client. Abdul however, said the documents were with the court’s bailiff.

Abdul acknowledged the receipt of a counter affidavit and notice of preliminary objection filed by the APC, listed as the second defendant.

Justice Ekwo then adjourned till June 13 for a hearing of the substantive suit along with the preliminary objection.

The judge ordered parties to file and respond to all applications in the suit before the next adjourned date.

He directed that a hearing notice be issued on INEC.

The plaintiff wants the court to, among others, urge to restrain Ganduje from further parading himself as the chairman of the APC.

Read Also: Tinubu’s policies yielding positive results, say Akume, Ganduje

It also wants the court to issue an order directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to accord recognition to all actions taken by the APC, including congresses, primaries, and nominations, since Ganduje became APC Chairman on August 3, 2023.

The plaintiff contends that Ganduje is occupying the office of the APC Chairman illegally, not being from a state in the North Central geo-political zone.

The plaintiffs argued that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the APC breached the party’s constitution when it appointed Ganduje, from Kano State in the North West geo-political zone to replace Senator Abdullahi Adamu from Nasarawa State in the North Central geo-political zone.

It also argued that Ganduje’s appointment to replace Abdullahi was contrary to Article 31.5(1) f of the APC constitution and ultra vires the powers of the National Executive Committee of the party.

The plaintiff added that by the true interpretation of Article 31.5(1) of the APC. Constitution 2013 (as amended), the party is bound to comply with the procedure for the replacement of an officer in the event of a vacancy and ought to appoint a member from Nasarawa State in the North Central geo-political zone into the office of the Chairman of the party.

Listed as defendants, in the suit filed for the plaintiff by its lawyer, Ayuba Abdul, are Ganduje, the APC, and INEC.

The plaintiff wants the court to among others, declare that by Article 20(1) of the APC constitution 2013 as amended, Ganduje cannot be appointed as the National Chairman of the party other than through democratically conducted elections and that his current occupation of the office is illegal.

It equally seeks a declaration that by the provisions of Article 13 of the APC constitution 2013 (as amended), the party’s National Convention is the final authority of the party which has the power to elect or remove National Officers of the party including the National Chairman of the party.

The plaintiff also wants a declaration that the party’s National Executive Committee lacked the power to appoint any person to the office of the Chairman.

It is equally praying the court for the following orders:

*An order setting aside the appointment of the first defendant (Ganduje) as the Chairman of the second defendant (APC), same having not followed duly laid down procedures of the second defendant as enshrined in the second defendant’s constitution.

*An order directing the third defendant (INEC) not to recognize all actions taken (including, but not limited to party congresses, primaries, and nominations) by the second defendant during the tenure of chairmanship of the first defendant, from August 3, 2023, till date, same being actions done under an illegal Chairman.

*An order directing the third defendant to compel the second defendant to conduct a fresh convention for the sake of electing a National Chairman or appoint another National Chairman from Nasarawa State from the North Central geo-political zone in line with Article 31.5(i) of the Constitution of the All Progressives Congress, 2013 (as amended).

Explaining the rationale behind the case, Zazzaga, said it is intended to ensure fairness and justice because the party has continued to ignore his group’s members’ request that the right thing be done.

He said the progress of the APC is still their ultimate desire and urged the party to immediately do the needful to avoid any form of internal revolt that would give their opponents an advantage over them.

Zazzaga added that doing the needful will avert any undesirable uncertainty for the party in the near future, arguing that Ganduje’s occupation of the position of the party’s National Chairman was not in the interest of the APC.
