    • Presidential hopeful meets Obasanjo, Babangida

A former presidential candidate and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential hopeful, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has intensified consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.

He held separate high-level meetings yesterday with former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.).

The closed-door meetings were part of Hashim’s ongoing nationwide engagements with elder statesmen and key national figures to discuss the future direction of Nigeria.

It was learnt that Hashim assured the former leaders of his capacity to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, rebuild national unity, stabilise the polity, and restore economic prosperity.

He stressed that Nigeria urgently needs purposeful, inclusive, and unifying leadership to avert deeper national fractures.

Both Obasanjo and Babangida, though non-partisan, are widely regarded as influential elder statesmen who remain deeply invested in Nigeria’s unity and stability, having played defining roles in the country’s political and military history.

Hashim arrived at Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, around 11 a.m. and departed roughly an hour later. He subsequently travelled to Minna, the Niger State capital, where he met with Babangida aboard a Hawker 800 jet with registration number 5N-BZP.

During the Minna meeting, Hashim recalled Babangida’s historic role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, referencing the sacrifices he made during the Nigerian Civil War.

“General, you still carry in your body the wounds of the war fought to keep Nigeria one. Many of your colleagues were not fortunate to survive that struggle. If Nigeria is allowed to disintegrate today through incompetent leadership, then the sacrifices of patriots like you would have been wasted,” Hashim said.

He stressed that the 2027 general election must be centred on national rescue, warning that continued leadership failure could further endanger the country’s cohesion and stability.

Hashim was accompanied on the visits by the Chairman of the Northcentral Renaissance Movement, Prof. Nghargbu K’ts, as well as other aides.

The closed-door meetings, held on Monday, are part of Dr. Hashim’s ongoing nationwide engagements with elder statesmen and key national figures to discuss the future direction of Nigeria.

Sources familiar with the consultations said Dr. Hashim assured both former leaders of his capacity to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, rebuild national unity, stabilise the polity, and restore economic prosperity. During the Minna meeting, Dr. Hashim reportedly appealed to Babangida’s historic role in preserving Nigeria’s unity, referencing the sacrifices made during the civil war.

“General, you still carry in your body the wounds of the war fought to keep Nigeria one. Many of your colleagues were not fortunate to survive that struggle. If Nigeria is allowed to disintegrate today through incompetent leadership, then the sacrifices of patriots like you would have been wasted,” Hashim was quoted as saying.

Dr. Hashim was accompanied on the visits by the Chairman of the North Central Renaissance Movement, Professor Nghargbu K’tsɔ, as well as other aides.

Political observers view the consultations as a strategic move by Dr. Hashim to position himself as a national consensus-building figure ahead of what is expected to be a highly consequential 2027 presidential election.

Olawepo-Hashim calls for reconciliation in PDP

A former presidential candidate and founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has called for immediate reconciliation and a return to the original principles of the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He warned that Nigeria’s democracy could be jeopardised, if the main opposition party remained in a prolonged crisis.

Olawepo-Hashim spoke on the heels of the factional convention at Ibadan, Oyo State, despite a string of contradictory court orders and a subsisting court judgment restraining the faction from holding the convention.

He said the controversy has further exposed the widening cracks within the major opposition party.

Olawepo-Hashim reminded Nigerians of the party’s historic origins 27 years ago, describing the founding of the PDP as one of the most remarkable demonstrations of political maturity in the country’s history. He noted that the party’s formation brought together over 13 political associations, each robust enough to stand independently but united through dialogue, broad consultation, and a deep spirit of inclusion.

According to him, the founding leaders deliberately created a platform capable of preventing military adventurism, safeguarding the unity and indivisibility of the Nigerian state, and promoting genuine federalism.

He noted that the party’s inclusive and consultative spirit was the reason it secured almost two-thirds of elected positions in the December 1998 local government election, an early success that helped to stabilise Nigeria’s democratic order.

Olawepo-Hashim stressed that the current path of fragmentation, court-induced confusion, and exclusionary politics portended dangers to the party’s foundational ideals.

“Inclusion, not exclusion, is the tradition of the PDP,” he warned. “We must strive to bring all sides back to the table to save the PDP and save Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.

The PDP chieftain insisted that the party’s revival depends on genuine unity and purposeful reconciliation, urging the party’s leaders to commit to a single watchword.

“We must not leave anyone behind,” he stated..

Olawepo-Hashim added a scriptural reminder, noting that the Bible teaches that “to everything, there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1).

The PDP chieftain noted that this is not the season to expel members but to reconcile and bring new members onbard.

It is the season to save the PDP in order to save Nigeria’s democracy, he said.

As the PDP continues to navigate legal disputes, factional activities, and internal distrust, Olawepo-Hashim’s intervention adds pressure on party stakeholders to abandon parallel structures and return the party to a cohesive and credible opposition force, one capable of safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic future.

Hashim: Aremu, a great star has fallen

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has visited Sango Ota, Ogun State  residence of his friend, the late Abiodun Aremu, to commiserate with his wife,  Mrs Funke, and their children.

He said: “Aremson, as we called him, and I met in 1986 as young activists. I was in the School of Basic Studies and Aremu in the School of Technology, both campuses of the College of Technology, Ilorin, with the third college being  School of Management and vocation.

“Aremu and I belonged to the Youths Thinkers Club, a group of Patriotic young thinkers committed to a better Nigeria and the Liberation of our Fatherland from underdevelopment. We were also Joint members of the Patriotic Liberation Movement, a working class and peasantry focused left group with leading figures like M Yaqub (later Rotimi Obadofin), Femi Ahmed, Didi Adodo, Rev Father Ofei, Bona Chizea, Alex Ayatollah, Sunday Ewen etc.”

Hashim added: “Ilorin where Aremson cut his activist political teeth like I, was an ideological melting pot in the mid 80s.

“At the Youth and Students fronts were actors like Shola Olorunuomi now a University Professor, Denja Yaq, Lanre Fulani, Mathew Keyi, Hamzat Ibn Suleman, etc.

“In the media were Dapo Olorunyomi, Lanre Kawu (Modibo Kawu Ladi Abdul Azeez) who eventually became Dapo Olorunyomi’s wife.”

He added: “ Atribute to Aremson’s unwavering commitment to the working people of Nigeria and the cause of a better Nigeria cannot leave out the influence of the family of patriots that produced him and ideologically birthed some of us.

“Aremu and I had a closer bond, we were very passionate about change. Some people say every opportunity to confront the status quo was like a birthday ceremony for Aremu and I. Some more uncharitable critics called us “Petty bourgeois exhibitionists”.

“In May 1986, Aremu as President of Students Union led protesting students of School of Technology and I led thousands of students from school of Basic studies to protest the Killing of students in Abu Zaria in what became the Ango must go protest. We were heading to rendezvous at the NTA Ilorin where we had planned to make a broadcast, when we were confronted by large detachment of Mobile Anti riot policemen at Ministry of Agriculture in Ilorin.

“The Government declared a curfew but we managed to get together later at my grandmother’s place to a plate of mama’s Amala and Ewedu soup.

“Aremson and I kept close contact and visited with each other regularly over the past four decades. He recently survived a stroke, but fell to the  cruel assault of a hit and run driver.

“Why was Aremu crossing the road all by himself? He had a car which he seldom use because the road to his house was simply impassable, the last time I visited. Most residents of the community simply just park their cars.

“Aremu built his house amongst the poor, though I won’t consider him poor. He chose by himself what he did, not because he lacked better options.

“His choice was made easy for him by the understanding and cooperation of his loyal wife who must now bear the greatest weight of this loss.

“Aremson was an Internationalist, particularly a friend of Cuba and a promoter of the Legacy of Amicar Cabral.”

Dr. Hashim added that “we were ideologically bonded until his death. Though, we chose different paths as we grew up, he, a professional revolutionary, I chose entrepreneurship and Mass Democratic Politics, but our cord of commitment to a better Nigeria remained unbroken.

“A rare patriot has fallen, a combatant for the cause of the poor is gone, my friend has become the pool of water after the rain that passes by the street never to return home again. Adieu great one!”

He noted that the respected revolutionary -Comrade Abiodun Aremu passed on Sunday 12th of October 2025.

He  prayed for God to give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.

Olawepo-Hashim prepares $4tr economic plan ahead 2027 polls

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has promised to make Nigeria a N4 trillion economy, if voted president in 2027.

His economic plan is generating discussions among people from different backgrounds.

His $4 trillion economic blueprint, first unveiled in 2018 and now revived for national dissection, is generating interest online and beng hailed as a bold, detailed, and executable pathway to strengthen Nigeria’s economy.

The plan envisions growing the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) from today’s levels to $4 trillion within a decade, powered by aggressive diversification, industrial expansion, infrastructure overhaul, and massive private sector participation.

It is not a plan that analysts see as a campaign talking point but as a policy compass capable of uniting the PDP under a credible economic recovery agenda.

The renewed interest in the plan emanates from the yearnings of Nigerians to get practical solutions to the high cost of living, unemployment, and the need to reinforce the manufacturing base.

If adopted as a central plank of the PDP manifesto, Olawepo-Hashim’s proposal could help to position the main opposition party as a serious contender for power in 2027, offering voters a clear alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

For many Nigerians, the $4 trillion target may sound ambitious, but Olawepo-Hashim and his supporters argue that the targets inspire clear action and the PDP, with experienced technocrats and tested political machinery, could translate the vision into reality.

Olawepo-Hashim: Nigeria must not be overrun by terror groups

    • North experiencing ‘adaptive insurgency,’ he says

A former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, has expressed concern over the security crisis in the country.

Olawepo-Hashim advised that a mortal alliance of terror groups with global links plotting to establish a parallel state within the country,’’ must not be allowed to succeed.

He spoke against the backdrop of the recent killings by armed men in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.

The frontline politician described the incident as yet another pointer to the growing sophistication of what he termed an “adaptive insurgency”   in the North.

He said: “The killings in Benue last weekend are a tragic reminder of the complete breakdown of security in Northern Nigeria.

‘’What we are witnessing is not isolated violence, but a coordinated effort by a mortal alliance of terror groups whose goal is to carve out a state within Nigeria.”

According to him, this wave of terror is not limited to Benue or the Northeast but has progressively engulfed some  parts of the Northwest, including Zamfara, Kebbi and  Kaduna states  as well as some sections of Katsina state ‘’where communities continue to suffer loss of life, livelihoods and dignity.’’

He also warned of the insurgents’ growing incursion into the Northcentral and Southern regions, citing recent activities in Kwara, Ekiti, Ondo, and Kogi states.

Olawepo-Hashim expressed concern that the Federal Government’s  delay in adopting recommended strategies, such as the decentralisation of policing through the establishment of state and local police  ‘’suggests either gross negligence or wilful complicity.’’

“Since 2014, the APC(All Progressives Congress) has found the strategy to win elections, but they have not found or pretend not to find the strategy to end insecurity and poverty,” he remarked, questioning whether elements within the ruling party may be covertly aligned with the forces of terror.

He highlighted Nigeria’s historic reputation as a regional peacekeeper, having played pivotal roles in halting civil wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone and helping out with peace efforts in Congo and Sudan.

The business mogul lamented that the country was now appearing helpless within its borders.

“Nigeria is not such a weak state as her current rulers are making it look. We were once the pride of Africa’s military diplomacy. The question now is whether our leaders have the will and patriotism to save the country,” he added.

Calling on all patriotic Nigerians across ethnic, religious, generational and political divides to rise to the occasion, Olawepo-Hashim warned that Nigeria stands at a tipping point.

“This is a defining moment for our country. We must act now or risk losing the republic to a violent, extremist alternative” he said.

  • Olawepo-Hashim advises Middle Belt leaders on national unity

Presidential candidate of People’s Trust (PT) in the 2019 general elections Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has urged the Middle Belt to be at the forefront of facilitating national unity towards good governance.

The business mogul said the Middle Belt region remains the bridge for the unity of Nigeria, adding that the region’s leaders have no reason to despair, despite the travails of nationhood.

Speaking at the launch of the autobiography of Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, titled, “My Testimony”, Olawepo-Hashim said: “The Middle Belt is doing its best. We should continue to do this in the interest of our dear nation and for future generation.

“Air Commodore Dan Suleiman as an outstanding Middle Belt figure. He has been in the forefront of the fight for national unity, in utmost expression of his nationalism and in the defence of national values.

“Dan Suleiman has been humble in and out of office, and has been exemplary as a beacon of hope for newer generations. The foundation that the legend is setting up is one that will communicate his virtues and values. He is not arrogant. He is God-fearing and has been a fighter for democracy by severally putting his life on the line.”

Olawepo-Hashim noted that “the political legend remains an epitome of excellence and of doggedness, but it is unfortunate that people of lower achievements are now rather being celebrated instead of living legends like Dan Suleiman.

“We must not lose focus of the gains from the Middle Belt despite provocations. We paid dearly for our national unity. We must continue to do this, because our task is not over yet. We remain a vehicle to unite the country.”

Echoing Olawepo-Hashim’s viewpoint, Suleiman said the role of nation building is an onerous one, requiring all hands to be on deck.

“The Middle Belt has been playing the role of a mediator and cannot afford to shirk this responsibility,” he said.

The event, which held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Jahi, was attended by the Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, former Kwara State Governor Cornelius Adebayo, Chief of Staff to the Benue State Governor Chief Terwase Obunde, among others.

  • PT’s presidential candidate, Olawepo-Hashim congratulates Buhari

Presidential candidate of People’s Trust (PT) Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has congratulated candidate of the All Progress Congress (APC), President Muhammadu Buhari on his declaration as winner of last Saturday’s presidential election.

He however called on him to be mindful of numerous lapses identified in the electioneering process.

Olawepo-Hashim, who ran a robust campaign harping on issues and preferring solutions to them, stressed not a few gaps including card reader failures, thump printing of ballot papers, allocation of results, violence and killing plagued the polls.

Nevertheless, he congratulated Buhari for “greater good, peace and progress of the nation and also in compliance with the peace accord, which all the aspirants signed.”

In a statement where the usually cerebral politician articulated his positions, he expressed gratitude to the team of supporters who broke the bandwagon and showed loyalty to him, making him one of the frontrunners beyond the dominant party candidates.

According to him: “I am particularly thankful to the people of Yauri Emirate and Zuru in Kebbi State, who spoke through their votes that family ties cannot be easily broken by politics.

“While the APC and PDP remained the dominant parties in Kebbi State, the great people of Kebbi State showed loyalty to the bloodline by making sure that People’s Trust emerged third in most of the State.

“I continued to receive calls of support and solidarity from titleholders in the emirates and village heads who continued to say to me, ‘I hope you saw our hand?’.

“I saw their hands. The votes were many, not the 96 votes declared by Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Chairman of INEC.”

Usually calm and collected, Olawepo-Hashim was clear in maintained his party went around the country in the campaign season and were one of the few alternative candidates to the two dominant parties, APC and PDP, who organized rallies and engaged in commercial advertising on the print and the electronic media right to the last day of campaigning.

Their messages, he noted,  were clear that Nigeria can indeed build a US$4 trillion economy within 10 years and that the country can be  united and secured, besides the ability to employ youths by creating 4 million jobs per year and paying workers a living wage of not less than N50,000.

According to the business mogul- turned politician: “We passed a strong message that a ‘new and better Nigeria is possible’. Now the election has been won and lost.

“It is my duty, as a matter of honour as all contestants signed an accord to keep the peace and congratulate the winner. I therefore offer my felicitation to the winner of the 2019 Presidential election, President Muhammad Buhari.

“I pray for God’s guidance for him and wisdom as he steers the ship of State further in the next four years.”

He explained the nation cannot pretend everything has been smooth in the processes leading to the election and the election itself.

Some of the ugly realities are assignments for political leaders and the entire citizenry to fix in the immediate future with a view to resolving them so as to building a stronger democracy, a more united and prosperous Nigeria.

The candidate with a rich history of activism alleged an attempt to politically delegitimise the People’s Trust (PT), its presidential candidate and other platforms.

Pursuant to this, the series of ridiculous votes in the region of 40, 90, 100 in different States allocated by Professor Yakubu, the chairman of the INEC and his team does not in any way reflect number of votes obtained by the People’s Trust in the elections.

The total votes announced in many States and FCT were in fact less than votes recorded in some and most of the polling units.

To the gallant contestant, while People’s Trust cannot claim to have out-performed the APC and PDP in any State, in most States of the North-Central and Kebbi State, it recorded votes that place it in the third position.

“Unfortunately, the handler and fixers of the current exercise will rather choose to ridicule the People’s Trust while allocating huge figure to shadowy parties that were deliberately registered and propped-up to give support and legitimacy to the ruling party.

“The whole idea was started earlier in the campaign season, by scheming the People’s Trust out of the Presidential debate and electronic media channels controlled by the ruling party.”

Rather unruffled, he continued: “These political forces who are not simply contented with rigging elections in 2019 alone, also want to determine the set of political platforms to promote for the future. They want to play God over our destiny.

“These forces are unhappy that the People’s Trust submitted the highest nominations into offices during the nomination exercise.

“They are unhappy that we won the online votes amongst the alternative parties. They have done everything to attack and destroy our platform, but we are undaunted and not intimidated”

He alleged further: “The odious scheme of this anti-PT forces finally came to the fore when one of the private stations controlled by the ruling party quickly assembled some proxy analysts to lampoon the ‘bad showing’ of some young parties, they immediately launched a deregistration of these parties, even only after the results of only two States had been officially announced, this is how petty, ugly and low, the electoral and political process in 2019 has descended to.”

On electoral irregularities, violence and killings, the business magnate stated that it was noted in many locations and the unusual large numbers of cancelled votes in Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa and other areas.

“Incidentally, these States fall within the catchment areas of the People’s Trust (PT).

“In many States, we have received reports of ballot snatching, delayed arrival of voting materials or deliberate non-distribution of materials and wide spread irregularities.

“We hope the managers of the process will address these problems and stop further bloodshed in the land.

Other than this, he said in the build-up to the election, following the initial postponement, they envisaged the present scenario and the reason why they requested in their letter dated 17th February, 2019 for a four week postponement of the polls to allow for a properly audited system and a cool-off period from what was obviously a desperate election scenario.

Unfortunately, the major parties appear to be interested in having the election anyhow and not properly.

“The outcome of the 2019 Presidential elections, even though we have accepted it in the interest of peace and stability of the country, fall short of international standard and the standard established at the 2015 election.

“President Muhammad Buhari must, soon after the Governorship and State Assembly elections, probe the inefficient conduct of the INEC. It will be time also to have a national conversation on how to unbundle the INEC and have a more efficient and transparent Election Management Process.”

On vote buying, he said, they “saw massive voters’ inducement with cash especially by the two dominant parties. Whatever support therefore, obtained by them has been immorally and illegally acquired.

“Cash deployed have also been above the threshold set by the electoral act. One unfortunate dimension of the vote purchase market in the just concluded Presidential election is that the practice was not just driven by unscrupulous politicians desperate for votes but by the demand of about 60% of the voters who turned for financial gratification before voting.

“Candidates who refused to offer cash-for-votes were generally referred to as ‘unserious candidates’ and severely punished at the polls. Nigerians as a people must have a honest debate about vote buying and its impact on the electoral outcome and governance.”

Concluding, Olawepo-Hashim said the election showed that the victor has secured a massively tainted victory that lives behind ‘a sour taste in the mouth’ and a broken polity.

It is his responsibility to pick the pieces and heal the wounds that have already been inflicted in the land.

“On my part, I consider it a rewarding participation in spite of the outcome. It is always honourable to stand up for duty to one’s country, regardless of the outcome. I remain undaunted; I remain solid in my faith that a better Nigeria is Possible. I pledge to you that you will find me always a willing partner in the unfinished assignment for the peace, unity and prosperity of Nigeria, even as the future beacons.”
