  • 2019: ADD adopts PT’s Olawepo-Hashim as consensus presidential candidate

Three days to the rescheduled presidential election, polls conducted online by a team of panelists commissioned by Alliance for Defence of Democracy (ADD) has resulted in the adoption of People’s Trust’s (PT) Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as a consensus presidential candidate for the 2019 elections.

ADD is a newly launched advocacy coalition of third force stakeholders in Nigeria.

In a communique announcing Olawepo-Hashim as a consensus presidential candidate yesterday, the ADD Selection Council urged Nigerians to vote the pyramid symbol of PT for the third force in Saturday’s presidential elections.

The communique reads: “Following months of consultations, frantic efforts and rigmarole, the process of picking  a consensus presidential flagbearer from among new breed presidential hopefuls of the third political force for the 2019 elections climaxed last weekend in Nigeria as over seven million Nigerians, mostly youths and women, among others, voted to pick their preferred consensus presidential candidate.

“At close of collation and count of votes on Thursday, 14th February 2019, our poll moderators and panelists with strong mandate from ADD, facilitators of the third force presidential primary polls are satisfied to declare Olawepo-Hashim, as the consensus presidential flagbearer for the fresh breed, third force political parties to slug it out with President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during Saturday’s  presidential elections

“The polls conducted online by our team of panelists commissioned by ADD witnessed an unprecedented 7,539,000 votes in all, especially from young adults and professionals between the ages of 18 and 45, who desire political ideological paradigm shift in the politics and governance of Nigeria.

“However, in a somewhat innovative dimension, voters were requested to choose three presidential candidates from among five already shortlisted contenders namely; Donald Duke of Social Democratic Party of Nigeria (SDP), Kingsley Moghalu of Young Progressives Party (YPP), Fela Durotoye of Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Omoyele Sowore of African Action Congress (AAC) and Olawepo Hashim of PT, who eventually clinched the consensus presidential ticket of the third force to lead the fresh breed credible alternatives against the presidential flagbearers of the APC and PDP in Saturday’s general elections.”

“The results of the polls collated by the Tactical Selection Council, led by Prof. Anthony Kila, Director of Centre for International and Advance Professional Studies (CIAPS), showed that Olawepo Hashim scored 5,735,000 and the runner up, Sowore Omoyele of the AAC received 2,342,000.”

Duke of SDP scored 2,310,000 votes to come third and Kingsley Moghalu of YPP, who was recently endorsed by literary giant, Prof. Wole Soyinka, came fourth with 1,950,000 votes. Fela Durotoye of ANN came fifth with 1,570,000 votes.

  • Olawepo-Hashim writes INEC, seeks further shift of polls date

Third Force Presidential candidate running on the People’s Trust (PT) platform, Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has written the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu requesting a further extension of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The Presidential hopeful argued that, the one week extension was rather too short to conclude the stated enormous logistics requirement for the polls.

Olawepo-Hashim who lately led the online polls of most preferred candidate amongst the third force, argued in a letter to the INEC chairman that another extension was reasonable in view of the logistics burden on the contestants and the parties.

According to him, the candidates and the parties would now have to repeat logistics preparations that have hitherto been deployed to achieve the level of mobilization at the February 16 scheduled election.

He stressed that, “It is my considered opinion that in the haste to stick to a quickly announced date for the election, the Commission may not have paid adequate attention to the attendant voter apathy that may result if adequate confidence building measures are not implemented to win back ‘would-be’ voters for the next date of polling.

“As a result and because a potential voter’s apathy in some section of the country or all of the country may substantially affect the results of the election, a new date of election should be between three to four weeks from February 16 not one week from February 16 as previously announced. This is more so for self-funded candidates and political parties who do not have the possibilities or intentions of falling quickly on the State treasuries to refinance another logistic deployment.” He argued

The candidate equally opined that, campaigs should also resume undoubtedly in consonance with extant legislation that allow campaign to continue up till 24 hours before elections, in order to achieve the same level of mobilization of voters as before February 16th.

In his letter copied to the United Nations representatives, Observer and Civil Society Groups, the diplomatic community and the media Olawepo-Hashim also urged that, “the Commission should liase with the National Orientation Agency (NOA), who should use their national networks to ensure mobilization of communities, social and interest groups to reach potential voters in order to avoid voter apathy at the next date of election.”

  • PT’s Olawepo Hashim maintains online lead over Buhari, Atiku

Presidential Candidate of the People’s Trust (PT) Mr. Gbenga Olawepo- Hashim, has maintained the lead as most popular candidate online.

The weekly social media rating of presidential candidates’ engagements on the popular online platform, Facebook, on Tuesday showed he is still leading as the most popular Presidential candidate online, three days to the 2019 Presidential election.

The latest data collected by an Abuja- based research outfit, Grandplan, showed Olawepo- Hashim was ahead of President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The PT candidate, who first overtook President Buhari and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on 10th December 2018, has remained on top with the highest engagements on social media consecutively ever since.

Going by the data on Tuesday, February 12th, 2019 in Abuja, Olawepo-Hashim recorded Facebook engagements in excess of 63,000 this week while Atiku Abubakar who came behind him, recorded 56,000+.

Buhari is far behind with only 6000+ engagements.

The statistics also showed presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) Kingsley Moghalu; Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) Fela Durotoye and others were trailing behind.

Data analysts involved in the polling project said the data on each of the candidates’ were realistic because “Facebook represents the broad spectrum of voters who will vote in the February poll.”

According to them: “Increasing engagements imply voters’ growing interest in the candidates while a decreasing result reflects voters’ disenchantment.

“A static return means a candidate is at a crossroads in the campaign.”

The analysts said in their report that Olawepo-Hashim’s growing engagement rating is a measure of voters’ interest in him as a third force alternative.

“He is no longer part of the pack of third-party candidates. He has moved ahead to emerge as a real alternative to both Buhari and Atiku. This is a game changer from data perspective,” according to Segun Seriki, the lead analyst for the project.

“The latest data point to a major upset within the struggle for Nigeria’s presidency, we are making the report available to all the major candidates.

“Our latest data reflect a major upset in the battle for the Presidency. It is no longer a two- horse race. There is now a third

force that is overtaking the old alternatives.

“We are still following the data but for now, Olawepo-Hashim has pulled the impossible to maintain an eight weeks lead over President Buhari and Atiku Abubakar,” he said

  • Shock as Olawepo-Hashim pulls out of ANN presidential primaries

The hitherto upbeat Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) may be witnessing a major crisis of confidence with the withdrawal, yesterday, of its Presidential aspirant and key financier, Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, from the presidential race, on grounds of breach of party’s constitutional procedure, in the build-up to its presidential primaries scheduled for Saturday, September 29.

Olawepo-Hashim, erstwhile favourite to clinch the party’s presidential candidacy slot, said in a letter addressed to the party chairman, that, it is regrettable that the abnormalities he mentioned to the chairman at their Wednesday meeting have not been corrected.

Dated September 28, the aspirant who has toured a substantial part of the country campaigning for delegates’ support noted that, “The list of delegates has not been provided to me as a Presidential Aspirant on the platform of the ANN. This is contrary to the constitution of the ANN and the Electoral Act. This is such a fundamental flaw as to render any exercise purporting to be presidential primaries to be nugatory.”

Olawepo-Hashim said it is unfortunate that even on the eve of the so-called primaries, the guidelines, which ought to have been approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) and issued at least seven days before the elections, are not available.

“The absence of guidelines to guide the conduct of the primaries constitute a grave violation of our party’s Constitution and the Electoral Act,” he said, adding that,  “The arrangements for the Presidential Primaries have not been published so that everyone will know. Who are those to conduct the Primaries, including Accreditation of delegates, Screening of Aspirants etc.? As a Presidential Aspirant, I am yet to know the arrangements put in place for the conduct of the primaries”

Because of these alleged imperfections, Olawepo-Hashim pulled out of the presidential race.

“I regret to inform you that I will not participate in tomorrow’s primaries until the constitution of the party is respected and all the defects are rectified,” he said.

  • Dan-Musa steps down for Olawepo-Hashim in race to presidency

The presidential aspiration of frontline contestant on the platform of the Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN), Mr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, got a boost on Friday as another top contender and veteran of presidential politics, Alhaji Ibrahim Eyitayo Dan-Musa, shelved his ambition in favour of Olawepo-Hashim.

Olawepo-Hashim, who had earlier emerged victorious as one of the four successful contenders of the fourteen screened by the elders of the Middle Belt Forum about four months ago, was in high spirits on Friday as Dan-Musa described him as a purposeful politician.

Dan-Musa, in a letter he submitted to the National Chairman of the ANN, Pastor Emma Dania, to intimate him with his decision to withdraw from the race and team up with Olawepo-Hashim, said he consulted with his teeming supporters nationwide before taking the action.

He said his supporters would be mobilized to ensure that Olawepo-Hashim clinched the presidential ticket of the party, adding that the same effort would be invested in the February 16, 2019 presidential election to ensure his victory.

Dan-Musa described Olawepo-Hashim as “a proactive politician who understands the dynamics of Nigerian politics. He is a very vibrant youth who has been part of the politics of the forth republic where we had both, as foundation leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party, played prominent roles. He was a foundation deputy national publicity secretary of the party.”

Olawepo-Hashim said Dan-Musa’s decision to withdraw from the race and support him was service to Nigeria and the ANN.
According to him, “You have not stepped down for me but for Nigeria and our great party. You have made a great contribution to the party. You have demonstrated the spirit that the ANN is made of.

“This development is very important to me because Alhaji Dan-Musa, a prominent politician and an accomplished entrepreneur, has structures nationwide, which he is deploying in support of our campaign to rescue Nigeria. We will all campaign together and form government together by the grace of God.”
