  • Glo launches Vigicom to boost security

Globacom has launched a new communication package that will assist members of the Vigilance Group of Nigeria (VGN) to effectively perform their duty.

Specially conceived to support vigilance groups across the country, the package, called Vigicom, will in addition allow members of the group to communicate with their families at no cost.

Speaking at the launch of the product in Abuja at the weekend, Commander General of the Vigilance Group of Nigeria (VGN), Alhaji Ali Sokoto, said Vigicom will help in effective local policing of remote areas and also assist in gathering necessary intelligence about criminals. He endorsed the Vigicom product and thanked Globacom for coming out with such a wonderful service.

Globacom’s Head of Public Sector, Mr. Tunde Amunikoro said, “communication is key to security and that was why Glo launched the package to assist local vigilance groups to become more effective in discharging their duties.

“The essence of Vigicom therefore is to enable security men to send or receive alerts and reach out to critical stakeholders, particularly in distress, without being encumbered by the non-availability of recharge cards even in the remotest part of the country,” he said.

“Take for instance armed security men deployed on the highway from Mokwa to Bida to secure travellers against robbers. How would they be able to communicate with each other as well as their headquarters and families in case of emergencies without having to recharge; considering that recharge cards are not in the remote highways? With Vigicom, that challenge is over,” Amunikoro said.

  • Dangote, Globacom among Africa’s top brands

The Dangote Group has emerged one of this year’s Africa’s top 10 most valuable brands.

The rating is contained in a survey conducted by African Business magazine, a pan-African business publication.

In the survey, tagged: The Brand Africa 100 Table, Dangote emerged as the Most Valuable Brand in the consumer goods sector, with an African brand value of 216.

The brand emerged the eighth Most Valuable Brand when placed among brands from other sectors.

“The Brand Africa 100” table was established in 2011, in recognition of the growth of African brands, which were beginning to challenge global brands or lead global brands in new categories, such as telecommunications.

In its comment on the recognition of the Dangote brand, African Business magazine said: “…But what is perhaps a little more surprising is that Dangote, the largest manufacturing conglomerate in West Africa, and Globacom, the Nigeria-based telecommunication provider, are also in the lists. Both brands have managed to win the hearts of the communities in which they operate.”

The aim of Brand Africa 100 is to identify, acknowledge and promote African and global brands, which are catalysts for Africa’s growth, reputation and value.

On its method for arriving at the brands’ ranking, it said: “The study involved a comprehensive research among consumers, who are 18 years and older, living in representative countries in metropolitan sub-Saharan Africa regions. They were to draw up a list of the most admired African and global brands in Africa.

“Each respondent was asked to mention the five local and global brands they admired.”

Dangote’s emergence did not come as a surprise to industry watchers. The brand has steadily increased its influence in many African nations through establishment of cement factories. It operates in about 13 African nations, making it one of the most visible, recognised and admired brands.

Seal the ticket in Abidjan, Globacom urges Eagles

Globacom has urged the home-based Super Eagles to consolidate on the first leg 4-1 victory over the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire on July 6, as both sides clash in the second leg in Abidjan today.

The home-based Eagles stand a chance to qualify for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in South Africa in January except if the Elephants can trounce their Nigerian counterparts 3-0. The Eagles have, however, vowed not to disappoint Nigerians.

“We believe the result of the first leg in Kaduna should spur the Nigerian national team to work harder to pick the ticket, so, we urge the Super Eagles not to rest on their oars, considering that the Ivoriens would do all they can to reverse the result to their advantage,” Globacom said in a statement in Lagos on Friday.

“It is also our belief that the new dawn that has seen Nigeria come close to qualification for the CHAN finals for the first time since inception in 2009 will make the Eagles soar in Abidjan,” the statement added.

Globacom commended the Technical crew led by Stephen Keshi for leading the Eagles to victory at the first leg, saying the success had placed the country on the threshold of history.

“We urge the NFF to continue to motivate the players ahead of this tie while calling on Nigerians not to relent in their prayer and support for the national team,” the statement concluded.

Globacom is the official telecommunications partner of the Nigeria Football Federation and the major sponsor of the Nigerian national teams.

Globacom: Clubs yet to receive money from LMC

Victor Baribote, Owner of one of the Globacom Premier League side, Nembe City, has said that clubs in the league were yet to receive any money from the League Management Committee (LMC).

Baribote stated this in Akure in an interview with Naijasportscentre.com.

He added that first round of the league was finished without any amount being given to the clubs.

He said that he was deposed unlawfully from the Glo League because it was said that he could not get money for the clubs.

It would be recalled that the Glo League board chaired by Baribote was voted out of office in Abuja in December 2012.

“They said we could not get money for clubs, but those who thought they could turn things around have not made any progress since.

“Heartland could not honour a match and they were representing the country, what are we saying?

“I called the minister three or four days ago that you dissolved my board because we could not get money for the clubs, but this is the end of the first round, and we have not received a dine,” he said.

Baribote later praised his side’s performance so far in the league, attributing it to good organisation of the management of the club and good interaction with the players.

“Football is all about organisation, that is what I have been hammering.

“Interaction with the players also helps; football has something to do with the mind, sometimes I come to the pitch to see them train,” he said.

Meanwhile, Saliu Abubakar, Member of the LMC said that there should not be fear about the clubs not receiving money yet, but plans were on course to meet with the club owners soon.

Abubakar had noted that the league body had been taking care of expenses of match officials since the beginning of the league.

He later added that the body would meet with the club owners to decide on the sharing formula before giving the clubs their entitlement.

“We have been taking care of the expenses of official since the beginning of the league.

“And we are meeting soon, I don’t want to disclose the time we are meeting yet, but we will meet the club owners soon to know the sharing formula.

“Though we have signed agreement with Globacom but it just remain bank formalities,” he said.

  • NCC lifts ban on promotions on Airtel, Globacom, Etisalat

NCC lifts ban on promotions on Airtel, Globacom, Etisalat

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has lifted the ban placed on promotions on Airtel, Globacom and Etisalat networks, Mr Tony Ojobo, the NCC Director of Public Affairs, has said.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Friday that the lifting of the ban was because the three service providers met the regulatory body’s December 2012 Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Ojobo, however, said that the ban placed on promotions on MTN network was still in force.

”The ban on MTN still remains in force until the KPIs are met.

“We expect that the networks will all continue to provide good Quality of Service (QoS),” he said.

NAN recalls that the NCC, on Nov. 12, 2012, placed the ban on all promotions by telecom operators as well as lotteries on the GSM networks.

Ojobo then said that the ban, which took immediate effect, would remain in force until the commission decided otherwise.

He said the ban was introduced because NCC was inundated with many complaints from consumers and stakeholders against the various promotions offered by the operators.

Ojobo said that the commission carefully evaluated the complaints  to sustain the integrity of the networks.

He said that the complaints were also evaluated in the general interest of consumers and socio-economic impact.
