  • Ojude-Oba: Globacom promotes cultural values

Telecommunication giant, Globacom on Monday called on Nigerians to entrench unity by embracing their cultural heritage and values which had become synonymous with their African identity.

Globacom Marketing and Communications Head Lagos/Ogun Mr Afolabi Otufowora, made the call at a briefing to announce the company’s sponsorship plans for the 2018 edition of the Ojude Oba Festival in Ijebu-Ode.

He said it was imperative to discourage the wave of modernisation aimed at eroding the age-old cultural activities which many young people tag as primitive.

Otufowora said Nigerians, especially the youths, needed to strive to deepen the unity of the country by showing interest in cultural history with a view to gaining a greater understanding of traditional values.

The 2018 Ojude Oba Festival has as theme: ‘Ojude Oba: Celebration of Rich Cultural Heritage.’

“Historically, the annual Ojude Oba Festival is a rallying point for all Ijebus to pay homage to the Awujale and unanimously push Ijebuland to the next level of social, psychological and infrastructural development.

“We commend our highly revered paramount ruler, Oba Sikiru Adetona, for the numerous giant strides recorded since he ascended the throne. It is noteworthy that the monarch has been using the festival to address issues relevant to the development of Ijebuland, in particular, and Ogun State, in general.

“We are happy that prominent personalities from all over the country usually grace the festival on the invitation of the monarch as special guests.

“This is a testimony to the fact that the Ojude Oba festival is also a plank for building and sustaining the unity of the country,” he said.

According to him, the company’s resolve to scale up preparations for the 2018 edition includes staging a promo specifically for the festival with a star prize of a new car.

He said participants are expected to visit Globacom’s designated ‘Glo World’ shops for more details on how to participate in the promo.

Chairman, Ojude Oba Planning Committee, Chief Wahab Osinusi, said the organisers of the festival were working with the Ogun State government to fully maximise its potentials for tourism.

Osinusi, the Otunba Fidipote of Ijebuland, said the tourism sector was an untapped gold mine which had the potential to alleviate poverty, create employment and generate revenue for development.

He described the festival as a cultural heritage that transcended religious divides and was promoting peace while aiding the socio-economic development of the community.

“The festival is not only about the equestrian display, parade of culture and tradition, merry-making and funfair.

“It also boosts commerce and trade in its entirety as commercial and trading activities are at their peak before, during and after the festival.

“All the facilities; hotels, restaurants, artisans, craftsmen, transporters, professionals, market men and women, among others, are fully engaged with several multiplier corporate effects,” Osinusi said.

Telecoms giant, Globacom, on Wednesday received recognition from industry players in acknowledgement of its innovations that have contributed to the growth and development of the sector.

Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) celebrated the company and other key agents of the revolution that altered the face of the industry in 15 years.

Billionaire, Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr. and the telcom giant, Globacom were recognised for their commitment and rare dedication to the growth of the industry into a world-class business concern which also generates employment for millions of Africans in Nigeria and other parts of the continent where it operates.

Former Executive Vice Chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, chaired the occasion of the public presentation of the publication at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, while the Minister of Communications Technology, Adebayo Shittu, was a Special Guest of Honour.

Globacom also got credit for introducing per second billing at inception. “That feat, consequently, made it much easier for Nigerians to get value for money by paying only for the exact time spent on calls… thus helping to aggressively boost telephone penetration in the country”, the book recalled.

The book mentioned other early revolutionary products pioneered by Globacom in Nigeria which included Blackberry, vehicle tracking, mobile internet, mobile banking, multimedia messaging service (MMS), in-flight roaming services, voice SMS, Magic Plus and Text2email, among others. The publication also documented Globacom as the first and the only operator so far with a wholly-owned submarine cable, Glo-1, linking Europe and America to West Africa to ensure the availability of bandwidth to enterprise customers in West Africa.

“Globacom was the first to launch 4G-LTE network in 33 cities in Nigeria in 2016. Recently, the company scored another first by introducing the novel concept of creating a dedicated path in its 4G LTE network for enterprise customers,” the book added.

In its bid to boost access to bandwidth in areas outside Lagos, especially the oil platforms and under-served communities in the southern parts of Nigeria, the telecommunications service provider   recently flagged off the laying of Glo 2, the first submarine cable in Nigeria to terminate outside Lagos.

  • Prof. Johnbull to expose child labour dangers

GLOBACOM, sponsor of the television drama series, Professor Johnbull, has announced that the sitcom will, this week, unravel the dangers in child labour, child trafficking and street hawking by school-age children rampant in the country.

The latest episode of the satire entitled: “Street School” re-enacts sundry ways through which children, minors and other school-age adolescents are abused with a view to sensitising the public to the plight of the victims.

“Street School” projects how these minors are lured from their homes, especially in the villages, to the cities with the mouthwatering promise of greener pastures and continuation of their education, only to be turned to house-helps and street hawkers by their masters, who renege on all the promises and subject them to all sorts of inhuman treatment.

The episode, billed for broadcast on NTA Network, NTA International on DSTV Channel 251 and NTA on StarTimes at 8.30 p.m. today, equally highlights some of the negative consequences of child labour such as exposing the children to dangers of road accidents, sexual and physical abuse and deprivation, which make the victims to become inferior to their age mates who they see daily go to school while they hawk.

  • Between the Awujale and Otunba Mike Adenuga

Between the Awujale and Otunba Mike Adenuga

FOR billionaire chairman of Globacom, Otunba Mike Adenuga Jr, the family unit is not just an important institution of life but about the most important. And he sees the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, not just as a monarch but as a father. Little wonder Adenuga and his telecommunication company, Globacom, have become the default backers of any event organised by the respected monarch whether in personal or official capacity.

So tight is the bond between the Apesin of Ijebuland and the Awujale that they have become each other’s confidants. Adenuga, ranked by Forbes as the second richest man in Nigeria, is connected to the Awujale with more than hailing from the same community. His mother, Oyindamola, hails from the Ijebu royal house, which makes him not just a friend and subject of the Awujale but also a brother.

Adenuga is never tired of seeking opportunities to demonstrate his love for the Awujale. In terms of financial backing, his companies are always at the forefront of popular Ijebu festivals or events held under the Awujale’s watch. The Ojude Oba Festival, the jewel in the crown of Ijebu cultural showpieces, has been sponsored by Globacom in the past 12 years, and this year’s will not be an exception.
