    Owoeri nets eighth goal in Sweden

    On-form Nigeria striker John Owoeri was the hero of his Swedish club Atvidaberg when he scored a brace in a 3-1 win at Halmstads on Saturday to take his goals’ haul to eight.

    Atvidaberg are now ninth on the league table with 37 points from 27 games.

    He scored his first goal of the game in the 36th minute to give Atvidaberg a 2-1 lead.

    Owoeri completed his brace in the 52nd minute to give his team a 3-1 lead.

    He played for 72 minutes and was substituted with Simon Skrabb.

    • Suffers foot injury

    Out-of-favour Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye scored his first ever goal for English Premier League (EPL) side West Bromwich Albion last night against Hull City in the Capital One Cup.

    A dramatic finish saw West Brom progress to the last 16 of the Cup tie, with Ideye and club-record signing putting the Baggies ahead from close range after 15 minutes.  Unfortunately, he injured his left foot in the process and was soon forced off.

    The visitors then turned the game around thanks to goals from Tom Ince and Robbie Brady either side of half-time.

    However, Albion snatched a place in the next round when Berahino produced a neat finish from an acute angle after Gareth McAuley had volleyed home the equaliser.

    The match ended 3-2 against Hull City.

    Nigeria defender Dele Adeleye was the villain for his Greek club OFI Crete as he scored an own goal in a 3-0 loss to Olympiakos.

    Adeleye turned the ball into his team’s net in the 22nd minute to give champions Olympiakos a 1-0 lead on Saturday.

    The former 3SC defender joined OFI Crete on a free transfer this summer from another Greek side, Ergotelis.

    Crete are 11th on the table with three points from as many matches, while Olympiacos move up to third spot with seven points.

    The 25-year-old player has played for Metalurh Donetsk(Ukraine), Tavriya, Kuban Krasnodar(Russia), Sparta Rotterdam(Holland) and Anzhi(Russia).

    Utaka’s goal fails to save Sivasspor

    John Utaka scored on the opening day of the Turkish league season but his club Sivasspor fell 2-1 at home to Gaziantepspor.

    Utaka opened scoring in the 52nd minute for the club handled by former Brazil great Roberto Carlos, before the visitors netted twice late on to win the game.

    Last season,the 32-year-old Utaka overcame a long-term groin injury to score nine goals in 21 matches for Sivasspor, who placed a decent fifth in the Turkish top flight.

    The former Rennes and Montpellier star is in the second year of his two-year deal at the Turkish club.

    Former Flying Eagles defender, Gbenga Arokoyo made his league debut for Gaziantepspor,playing for the entire duration of the game.

    Ike Uche scores third pre-season goal

    Thirty-year-oldIkechukwu Uche continued his great form in pre – season after he netted in the first half as Villarreal defeated Sassuolo 4-2 in a tune-up game on Thursday evening.

    The Nigeria international forward opened scoring for the Yellow Submarine in the 16th minute after an assist from Mexican Giovani Dos Santos.

    Espinosa, Vietto and Gerard Moreno were also on target for the Spanish team while the Italians managed to reduce the scoreline through Simone Missiroli and Simone Zaza.

    The exhibition game was the final of the 15th edition of Trofeo de la Cerámica Mahou Cinco Estrellas,which Villarreal won for the fifth consecutive time.

    Ike Uche also found the back of the net against Swansea City and Reus Deportiu, meaning he has scored in three of the five pre-season games played by Villarreal.

    The Camp El Madrigal outfit are away to FK Lokomotiv Astana on August 21 in the Europa League, three days before their meeting with Levante in the La Liga.

    Aluko’s goal saves Hull

    Nigerian striker, Sone Aluko became the saviour for his club, Hull City after he came in as a second half substitute in last night’s game against Trencin to score the winning goal that took the English side to the  Europa League play-offs.

    Courtesy of Aluko’s back breaking goal, the last season’s FA Cup finalists scraped past AS Trencin 2-1 on aggregate at the KC Stadium.

    Steve Bruce’s side were facing a humiliating early exit in their third qualifying round clash with the Slovakian side leading on away goals going into the closing stages having taken an early lead.

    But substitute Aluko was on hand to volley home from close range in the 80th minute after Ahmed Elmohamady’s cross from the right had been headed back by Robert Snodgrass.

    Elmohamady had brought the Tigers back on terms in the 27th minute as he climbed highest at the far post to head Robbie Brady’s left-wing cross beyond goalkeeper Milos Volesak.

    The KC Stadium had been stunned with only two minutes on the clock when a swift counter-attack from the visitors ended with Tomas Malek sweeping Frantisek Kubik’s low cross beyond Allan McGregor.

    Former Nembe City star, Joseph Essien, has expressed satisfaction with his first goal for Lobi Stars.

    Essien, who switched during the mid-season break, hogged the headlines as his late goal earned his new team maximum points, in front of the Katsina-Ala fans.

    “It was strange to concede an early goal, but credit must go to the entire team. We fought back and got victory to mark an exciting debut for Lobi Stars.

    “I capitalised on a communication breakdown between the Heartland goalkeeper and his defender to connect Dickson Idakwo’s pullout for the winning goal,” Essien told supersport.com.

    It is the first Premier League goal this term for Essien who left Nembe without hitting target.

    “I’m happy to join Lobi Stars and it’s a good start for me. I want to continue this way,” he said to supersport.com.

    Essien won the Lobi Stars Man of the Match Award for his gallant display, on match day.

    Hope Akpan scored for Reading FC in their 7-1 mauling of Bolton Wanderers in an English Championship game played at the Madjeski Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

    Akpan blasted in a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the top right corner to give the hosts a hefty six-goal advantage, after a hat-trick from Adam Le Fondre and further goals from Karspas Gorkss and Pavel Pogrebnyak had given the Royals an unassailable lead.

    A further goal from Nick Blackman in the 78th minute, following a fast break sealed the win for the hosts, although David N’gog managed to pull one back for the visitors in the 88th minute.

    AFTER 14 GAMES: Enyeama finally concedes a goal

    Cameroon’s Landry N’guémo has ended goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama’s 14-game clean sheet when his goal earned Bordeaux victory against Lille.

    N’Guemo struck after 27 minutes to earn his club a 1-0 win.

    Incidentally, the goal was the Cameroonian’s first this season in French Ligue 1.

    The Nigeria stand-in captain has kept a clean sheet for 1,062 minutes to hold the record as the second longest running clean sheet in French Ligue 1 history.

    The Nigeria No.1 has been outstanding for club and country this year.

    He was rewarded with a contract extension by Lille till 2017 and was listed by CAF for the 2013 African Footballer of the Year Award.

    Lille are second on the league table with 36 points from 17 games.

    Efe Ambrose dedicates goal to new daughter

    Nigeria international Efe Ambrose celebrated the birth of his daughter in style by scoring his first goal of the season as champions of Scotland Glasgow Celtic defeated Motherwell 5 – 0 at Fir Park on Friday.

    The 25-year-old was on the score-sheet in the 54th minute, his first goal in the championship since February.

    “I dedicate this goal to my new born child, given birth to shortly before the game. I was motivated to go forward in search of a goal to dedicate to her. I also want to thank my wife. She is the inspiration behind the rise in my career,” Efe Ambrose told allnigeriasoccer.com.

    Ambrose’ effort; a thumping header off a cross from the left was his first league goal of the season. He celebrated it in style with three sommersaults that left his teammates in stitches. The win cements Celtic’s place at the top of the table with 36 points from 14 games.

    Ambrose has played a crucial role in Celtic’s fine domestic run this season as he has played all 14 league games of Celtic this season.
